Text:
The first reference to the name in the Salem records is on page 11, volume 1, in 1637 or, according to the old method of marking time, 2d of the 11th month, 1636. "John Abbie is Recd. ffer Inhabitant & is to haue one acre lott for a house next beyond the Gunsmiths, and 3 acres of planting ground where the Towne hath appointed beyond Castle hill." There has existed some confusion regarding the various freemen of the name Abbey and Alby. Benjamin Albye was admitted freeman, May 18, 1642, and John Albye in Salem, May 10, 1643. These were, without doubt, the two Albys, John and Benjamin, mentioned in the early records of Braintree about this time. Benjamin Alby removed to Mendon and had numerous descendants, Whose names occasionally appear in printed records as Abbey. John Abbey, Sen., of Redding, freeman in 1634, may have been an Alby. On the 21st, 11th month, 1638, John Abby had a further grant of five acres, location not specified, but, as on the 15th, 2d month, 1639, this record occurs, "Granted unto John Abby 5 acres neere to Mr. Throgmortons Hoogehouse," it may be that the first was the grant and the second the location. Under date of the 25th, 10th month, 1637, it was agreed "the marsh and meadow lands that have formerly been laid in common to this town shall now be appropriated to the inhabitants of Salem, proportioned out to them according to the heads of families. To these that have the greates number an acre therof, and to these that have least not above half an acre, and to these that are between both three quarters of an acre, always provided and it is so agreed, that none shall sell away their proportions of meadow, more or less, nor lease them out to any above three years, unless they sell or lease out their houses with their meadow." Under the above division a list of the inhabitatns was taken, and the land divided. Jo: Abby is named in 1638 as having three in his family, and receives half an acre. On the 23d, 11th, 1642, ten acres are granted to John Abby together with several other ten-acre grants, all to be laid out near to Kings lot. This was on the Beverly side near Bass River, and on the 15th of the 12th month, 1642, it is voted "ordered that John Abby shall have 10 acres of land at Enon in exchange of 10 acres of land bounded out nere Basse River." The lot near Bass River was afterward granted to Michael Sallows. The record of the grants to Abbey show that he was of the same standing in the community as the great majority of the early inhabitants. The grants were in a great measure made with an eye as to the ability of the grantee to develop the land so granted, small grants to the poorer and larger grants to the richer sort. In 1642, Mr. Fiske organized a church at Enon and the following year the name Enon was changed to Wenham, while a permanent church organization was effected in 1644. In 1644, under date of the 13th, 6th month, it was agreed that John Abby "shall have all that wastground which lyeth between ye end of ye lott which he lives upon and ye meadow which belongs to ye town, leaving a poles bredth most convenient for a way." (Wenham town records, Worcester.) Under date of 1653 is a list of engagements with Goodman Haws about the mill, and "John Aby gives a day and a half of his labor toward its erection," and others contributed in like manner, some also giving the use of oxen. Mr. Fiske left the town in 1655 followed by a number of the church, and in 1657 Mr. Newman was procured as pastor. Under date of November, 1657, in a total rate of 42,19 pounds, divided among twenty-four persons, of whom five paid a total of 14 pounds, John Abey is assessed 1,5, which was about the sum paid by eleven other, but two being less. In 1659, twenty-seven pay a rate of 46,2, of whom sixteen pay 1 or a trifle over. Of these John Abey pays 1,5, as before, " in corne or cattle" In 1660 he was assessed as Goodman Abey at eight shillings toward a new meeting house or repairing the old one. The new house was built in 1663. Under date of 6th, 11th month, 1661, John Abbey, Sr., and Edward Waldron had a town grant of land to be equally divided between them. The use of the title Senior at this time helps to place the birth of the son John. In 1663 Goodman Abey, Sr., and John Clarke are chosen to join with the selectmen to make the minister's rate for the present year. In 1669 and in 1671 John Abbey appears as constable, and office of great local power and reponsibility. April 3, 1675, John Abbe deeded 10 acres of land to his son Samuel; Thomas, John, and Mary Abbe, being witnesses. John Abbe, sen., was a witness to the will of Edward Walden of Salem, 4th month, 1679 In 1683, John Abbey, who had been supporting his son Thomas, who lived with him and cared for him, dismissed Thomas on account of his bad behavior and called his son John, Junior, to take charge of him and his affairs. The son, John, proceeded early to build a new house, as the old one was unfit to live in. She was born in England about 1615 -20, and died in Wenham, Mass., September, 6, 1672. "Mary, the wife of John Abbey, senr. dyed the 9 Sept. 1672"; Wentham records. She was doubltess the mother of all of his children. Her name is given as Mary Loring, by Frederick Orr Woodruff, who says that the name was found on Enfield records by one who made researches for him there. John Abbe married (2) November 25, 1674, Mrs. Mary Goldsmith, widow of Richard Goldsmith, who was killed by lightening, May 18, 1674. She was living in 1683. " John Abbie and Marah Goldsmith maryed 25 of Novemb, 1674"; Wenham records. Children, probably all by first wife 2 John Abbe; b. probably in Salem, 1636 or 7; m. twice. 3. Samuel Abbe; m. Mary Knowlton. Sarah Abbe; Marah Abbe; m. _______ Killam. 4. Rebecca Abbe; m. Richard Kimball. 5. Obadiah Abbe; m. Sarah Tibbais. 6. Thomas Abbe; m. Sarah Fairfield. Third Generation 3. Samuel Abbe son of John (2) Abbe, born probably at Wenham, Mass., about 1646 or soon after his father's settlement there; died in Windham, Conn., March, 1697/8. His name first appears in the Wentham records at the time of his marriage. "Samuel Abby and Mary Knowlton maryed the 12th October 1672." He received a grant of ten acres of land in Wentham, and land to set his house upon, from his father, John Abbey, and wife, Mary, April 3, 1675, his brethren to have the refusal of the place if he should sell ( Essex deeds, 15:150). Samuel and his wife, Mary, were communicants of the church in Wenham in 1674. He was named in his father's will, 1683. A map of Salem dwellings in 1692, published in Volume I of Upham's Salem Witchcraft, shows the location of Samuel Abbey's house, number 114 on a plot in the southwest part, east of Bald Hill, within the 500 acres laid out to Robert Goodell in 1652 and its subsequent additions. On November 1, 1682, Samuel Abbey bought of Lott Killam and wife, Hannah, of Salem, he being then of Wenham, 6 acres in Salem on Norrice's Brook ( 12:112), and also bought of James Stimpson and wife, Priscilla, who had been the widow of Isaac Goodell, at the same place, some land in 1684 (12:113). On April 3, 1697, he and his wife, Mary, sold those lands described as a dwelling house, two orchards, and seventeen acres in Salem, bounding Anthony Needham, John Walcott, Isaac Goodale, Samuel Goodale, Abraham Smith, Abel Gardner, Joseph Flint, and also six acres on Norrice's Brook and two acres bought of James Stimpson, to Zachariah White of Lynn, all for 130 pounds (12:147). The above James Stimpson was of Reading and had married the widow of the elder Isaac Goodell. At the time of Godell's death in 1680, the widow was administratrix and Samuel Abbey was one of her sureties. He was then probably of Salem or possibly Topefield.
He was admitted freeman of Salem Village, March 22, 1689-90. He and his wife were dismissed from the Salem Church September 15, 1689, to unite in forming one at Salem Village; the date of its formation being November 15, 1689. Salem Village is now Danvers. On July 1, 1690, he was taxed at Salem Village, and again, January 18, 1694/5, he and his son were taxed there.
Samuel Abbey of Salem bought of Benjamin Howard of Windham, Conn. for 22 pounds 10 shillings current money, half an allotment of land (500 acres), being number 2 at the Center, at or near the locality known later as Bricktop. He probably removed to Windham about that time as he was admitted an inhabitant of that town December 23, 1697, and died there March of the following year. His estate was settled in 1699. The inventory, taken May 9, 1698, gives as legatees the following: wife, Mary; daughter, Mary, aged 25; son, Samuel, aged 23; son, Thomas, aged 20; Eleazer, aged 18 (the land records prove that this is a mistake for Elizabeth);Ebenezer, aged 16; Mercy, aged 14; Sarah, aged 13; Hepzibah, aged 10; Abigail, aged 8; John, aged 7; Benjamin, aged 6; Jonathan, aged 2. One record says he left a son, Eleazer, and a daughter, Abigail, each 8 years old at his death. This is doubtless an attempt to rectify the error noted above.

STALEY NARRATIVE
by Robert M. Staley
Daniel Earl Staley
Daniel Earl Staley, the second son of John Oliver Staley and Jemima Newell Ratliff, was born on May 26, 1885 in Yorktown, Lincoln County, Kansas. He moved to Clarke County, Iowa with his parents at the age of six, and grew up and started his family there. Daniel was a quiet, studious, and deeply religious man, and the first in our Staley line to leave the farm and join the industrial revolution. He married Margaret Alice Goodhart (1885-1964) on Sept.24, 1904 in Osceola, Clarke County, Iowa. Margaret Alice Goodhart, commonly known as Maggie or Madge Goodhart, was an orphan who was raised by her foster parents. The children of Daniel and Madge Staley were Earl John (1905-1949), Ruth Newell (1906-1978), George Franklin (1908-1994), and Royal (1913-2000).
Daniel Staley was teaching school by the time he got married in 1904 at age 19. Records show that in 1906 he was teaching at West Concord School in Franklin Township, Clarke County, Iowa. He later began working for the railroad, most likely The Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad, as a telegrapher. About 1913 Daniel Staley and family moved to Falls Church, Virginia, where he became a station master, probably on the Washington and Old Dominion Railway. The 1920 census records for Fairfax County, Virginia list his occupation as Clerk, Interstate Commerce Commission. About 1922 Daniel Staley and family moved to Waterloo, Iowa where he worked at the Transportation Company, which ran the streetcars in that city.
About 1923 the Daniel Staley family moved to Southern California, staying for 6 months in Los Angeles, and then buying a new home in Whittier at 1041 S. Central Ave. (in the area now covered by the Whittier Quad Shopping Mall). In 1923 he was working as Assistant Traffic Manager at Cal National Supply Co. Not long after that Daniel and his sons Earl and George went to work at the Twenty Mule Team Borax mine in the high desert town of Trona, San Bernardino County, CA. Daniel worked in the office and George worked as a supervisor of the miners. Madge stayed in Whittier with daughter Ruth and youngest son Royal. George returned to Whittier High School after about a year in Trona, and still graduated at age 18. Daniel returned to Whittier in about 1927 and started working at Stoody Company, a manufacturer of welding equipment and hard facing materials, which was doing a great business in the booming oil fields of Santa Fe Springs, CA. Daniel eventually became Sales Manager of Stoody Company.
In about 1934, after 30 years of marriage, Daniel and Madge Staley were divorced. The exact cause is unknown, but there were numerous clashes about money. Daniel moved into the Hoover Hotel in uptown Whittier, and Madge kept the house on Central Ave. In 1935 Daniel published a vanity press book entitled "New Oil for Old Lamps" which seems to be a strange mixture of philosophy, religion, and economics. There is some belief that Daniel had followed his mother’s religion and was a Quaker in his early years. He did select a Quaker city to live in, i.e. Whittier, California. He may well have been disowned by The Friends Church after his divorce. He later joined his daughter Ruth’s church, The Church of Religious Science. At any rate, his book seems to be an attempt to explore his own belief system, at a time which was undoubtedly quite tumultuous for him. Madge Staley married Bob Barnes in about 1941, and lived with him until she died in 1964 in Hemet, CA at age 79. Her ashes are in Rose Hills Cemetery, Whittier, California. Daniel Staley never remarried.
It is not certain when or why Daniel Staley left Stoody Company. In the early 1940’s he was working as a traffic manager for Bethlehem Steel Company, in Los Angeles. In 1942 he moved into a house owned by a Japanese friend, who had been placed in an internment camp for the duration of WWII. This large house was a on a hill in East Los Angeles which had an expansive Japanese garden, and multiple cellars. Daniel’s youngest son Royal, and his pregnant wife Mary Ann moved in with Daniel. Their daughter Andrea was born later that year. Royal was working at Douglas Aircraft at the time, building jigs for WWII aircraft production. In early January, 1945 Mary Ann gave birth to twin girls, Sharon and Cheryl.
After the war, Royal bought a small new tract home in Norwalk, CA, and Daniel moved in with him and his family. About 1948 Royal and his family sold their Norwalk home and moved to Ashland, Oregon to work in the lumber industry. Daniel moved into a small apartment in East Los Angeles, CA. He was suddenly alone after several years of living with his son and grandchildren. At that time Daniel had to ask for financial aid from his son George and his daughter Ruth . On April 4, 1949 his eldest son Earl unexpectedly died of a heart attack, at age 43, leaving a widow and two teen age children. Perhaps the grief and disappointment of that year took their toll, and Daniel Earl Staley died from a stroke on Sept. 6, 1949, at age 64.
According to his son Royal, Daniel Staley was a licensed Chiropractor, had passed the bar exam, and had authored 3 text books and 1 novel. His ashes are in Rose Hills Cemetery, Whittier, California.

STALEY NARRATIVE
by Robert M. Staley
George Franklin Staley
George Franklin Staley was born in Osceola, Clarke County, Iowa on J
une 13, 1908, and was the second son of Daniel Earl Staley and Margaret Alice Goodhart. He was a rather short man, with a deep, resonant voice, and an engaging smile. George was well known for his honesty and his integrity, which carried over into all his business dealings. He was also known for his intelligence, and his hard work. George would usually dominate the conversation in any group setting. He had tremendous energy, and a real zest for life.
George Staley briefly attended kindergarten in Iowa, and could remember being taught German because there were so many German farmers in that area. Even in his seventies he could still count from one to ten in perfect German. In late 1913 his family moved to Falls Church, Virginia, which is very close to Washington, DC. There were still dense woods in the area at that time, and George and his siblings had a marvelous time playing in them. His father once took him to see John Phillip Sousa lead a band in a parade through Washington, DC. He also remembered seeing Woodrow Wilson playing golf on the White House lawn in his knickers. When he was 14 the family moved to Waterloo, Iowa. When George Staley was 15 the family moved to Los Angeles, CA , where they lived on Union Ave. for 6 months; and then to Whittier, CA, where he attended Whittier High School. He later complained bitterly about his family moving so often, and having to change schools so frequently. He seemed to long for some stability in his life. Perhaps that explains why he lived in the same house for 44 years, and worked for the same company for 60 years.
Soon after arriving in Whittier George Staley moved with his father and older brother to the high desert town of Trona, San Bernardino County, CA to work in the Borax mine. The work was hot, dirty, and physically demanding. After about a year there, George returned to Whittier, and finished high school, graduating in 1926. His brother Royal later described George as being so brilliant that he always got straight A’s without ever opening a book. George was on the track team, and could often be seen running to or from school, something that he loved to do.
After several odd jobs at filling stations, etc., George Staley started working as a day laborer at Stoody Company in 1928, a job undoubtedly arranged by his father, who had started working there in 1927. Except for one brief interlude, George would spend the next 60 years of his life working in some capacity for Stoody Company, a manufacturer of welding equipment and hard facing material. In a Horatio Alger type career, he began as a day laborer in the shop, and worked his way up to Advertising Manager (1936), Sales Manager (1944),Vice President of Marketing (1963), Vice President of International Operations & Special Assistant to the President (1971), and finally Member of the Stoody Co. Board of Directors (1978). The Staley Training Center was dedicated in his honor in 1988, when he finally retired for good at age 80 ( after an earlier failed attempt to retire in 1974, at age 66). The name "George Stoody" for the character played by Bob Newhart in the sitcom "George and Leo" was coined by Dan Staley, the show’s creator and executive producer, as a tribute to his grandfather.
On June 15, 1934 George Staley married Louise Helen Develine, who had started working as a secretary at Stoody Company in 1931. Their children were Robert Michael Staley and his sister (who wishes to remain anonymous). Louise, who had been in the same class as Richard M. Nixon at Whittier High School, soon quit Stoody Company to be a full time housewife and mother.
Shortly after the birth of his son in 1935, George quit Stoody Company and took a job in Denver Colorado. After about six months he realized he had made a big mistake, and decided to return to Stoody Company. Upon his return he was promoted to Advertising Manager, and the company always treated him as if he had never left.
George Staley was an avid golfer, card player, fisherman, and sports fan. He was a charter member of Hacienda Country Club in La Habra Heights, joining up in about 1938. He played golf three times a week for many years, until his eyesight became too much of a problem. He was also an expert gin rummy player, and continued with that at Hacienda even after his golfing days were done. George did a lot of trout fishing in his early years in such places as San Gabriel Canyon, Big Bear Lake, and the Kern River. He also loved ocean fishing and deep sea fishing, and took several fishing trips to Mexico, where he caught a sailfish among other things. George held season tickets to the Los Angeles Rams in the late 1950’s and early 1960’s. He later held season tickets to the Los Angeles Dodgers. George traveled to Vero Beach, Florida for Dodger Spring Training every year from 1985 through1990.
George Staley was also a world traveler, partly because of his job, and partly because he enjoyed it. He started traveling on business in the 1930’s, when he largely had to travel by train. George would often times be away from home for a month to six weeks at a time, traveling from city to city by train. Later, he started flying on DC-3’s, which could not fly above the storms and often left everyone air-sick. He said he never got sick, and often had to help everyone else on the plane. George loved to drive on his vacations, and twice drove his 1940 six cylinder Chevrolet to Brownsville Texas, across the desert in the summer with no air conditioning, no power steering, and no power brakes. Other driving trips included a trip up the coast to upper Oregon, a trip to Mt. Lassen, a trip to Ketchum, Idaho, a trip to Yellowstone National Park, and two trips to Mexico City. Between his business travel and his vacation travel he visited every state in the union, plus Mexico, Canada, and much of Europe, Asia, and Central America.
George Staley had been a smoker since his teen age years, and had been a moderate drinker. After taking the Sales Manager job he was called upon to do more and more drinking as part of the job, while entertaining clients, etc. In 1949 his brother died of a heart attack at age 43, and five months later his father died of a stroke at age 64. These events caused George to reevaluate his life style, and to make some changes. He decided to give up drinking, smoking, and coffee all at the same time. It is a tribute to his tremendous will power that he was able to successfully make these changes, while holding down a very stressful and demanding job. He never smoked again. He didn’t take another drink for over 30 years, until doctors urged him to drink a little wine for the benefit of his cardiovascular system. He did renege on the coffee vow, but kept that in moderation. At about that same, i.e. 1949, he became active in the First Christian Church of Whittier, and brought his family along with him. Later in his life, he renewed his affiliation with that church, and eventually became an Elder.
Louise Staley died in 1981 after a long and painful battle with cancer. Her ashes are in Rose Hills Cemetery, Whittier, California. George Staley lived alone for the next 13 years, except for an occasional care-giver brought in by his children.
George Staley had a mild heart attack in 1968, at age 60, which caused him to once again make some life style changes, such as exercising more, and losing weight. He then developed an obsession with his heart problem that would prove to be his undoing. He suffered from angina, and often had to take nitroglycerine pills to relieve the pain. The high blood pressure that caused the heart attack also led to other problems, such as cataracts and an aortic aneurysm, all of which required surgery. He remained fairly healthy until 1990, when he started having transient ischemic attacks (TIA’s). He was diagnosed as having a blocked blood vessel in his brain, and treated with a blood thinner. In 1992 he had another heart problem, and received triple bypass heart surgery. During that surgery he suffered a stroke, which led to partial paralysis on one side of his body. After extensive therapy, he was nearly fully recovered by 1994. Ever obsessed with his heart problems, he found a doctor who promised to restore his youthful vigor by some kind of electrical shock treatment to his heart. Despite pleas from his children and his general practitioner, he decided to go ahead with that treatment. During a preliminary treadmill test he collapsed, and was hospitalized again. Still not deterred, he decided to go to other heart shock treatment specialists in Los Angeles. During hospitalization at Good Samaritan Hospital for the heart treatment, he slipped and fell, breaking his hip. He was released from that hospital, and sent to a nursing home in La Habra. There he fell once again, lay unconscious on the floor for many hours, and caught pneumonia. George Franklin Staley died the next day, Feb. 20, 1994, at age 85. Ironically, the last organ in his body to stop working was his heart, hours after he had been declared brain dead . His ashes are in Rose Hills Cemetery, Whittier, California.

2. Note
SFK lists first 2 and 4th child as born in Topsfield, MA. Says family moved to Harrison, ME in about 1818. However, none of the children appear in the Topsfield, MA Vital Records. The marriage is recorded in the Hamilton, MA Vital Records and baptisms for the first 2 children are recorded in the Ipswich, MA vital records with just Polly listed as parent. The second baptism record, for Ephraim in 1814, specifically lists Polly as "of Bridgton, ME". Apparently, the family went to ME earlier than indicated by SFK and probably all of the children were born there.
3. Note
Credited as among the first settlers of Topsfield, ME in March of 1832.

Harford, Connecticutt. 1906. online <www.GenealogyLibrary.com>: "JOHN GOODRICH of Bury St. Edmunds, in the County of Suffolk, England, was the father ofWilliam Goodrich, the early settler in Wethersfield, Connecticut, hisancestry and descendants being fully determined and published in "The GoodrichFamily in America" by Lafayette Wallace Case, M.D. John Goodrich was a clothier. He inherited from his father, William Gooderich of Hegessett, Suffolk County, yeoman, by his will, dated April 4, 1631, and proved in the Archdeaconry Court of Sudbury, February 2, 1631-2, all the houses, lands, and tenements in [Page184] Hegessett, and was the executor of the will. The Christian name of his wife was Margerie or Margaret, who is mentioned in the will of John Goodrich, dated April 14, 1632, and proved May 16, 1632, as also his sons, William Goodrichthe elder, William Goodrich the younger, John Goodrich, and Jeremy Goodrich. John Goodrich, the father of this family, was buried April 21, 1632, the same being recorded in the Parish Register of St. Mary, Bury St. Edmunds. William Goodrich the younger, was a clergyman, educated at Caius College, Cambridge, in Hegessett in 1678, willing property to sons of his brothers William the elder andJohn, who were the early settlers in Wethersfield. The English home of this family was, therefore, Hegessett, now called Hessett, which is six miles east of Bury St. Edmunds. Of this home and the family history in England, an account byHon. Grant Goodrich is published in the above genealogy. "

General Notes: Husband - Edward Woodman
In his genealogy, John A. Woodman writes: "All previous genealogies listed Edward Jr's birth as 'around 1628,' or stated 'no record of baptism.' Harry Thompson, archivist for the Greater Parish of Corsham, has informed us the Registers of St. Bartholomew's Church in Corsham do, in fact, list the baptism of Edward Jr."
Richard Bartlett, Jr., husband of Edward's 11th child, Maragaret, was the uncle of Josiah Bartlett of Kingston, New Hampshire, the first to vote for, and the second to sign, the Declaration of Independence.
The name of Edward Woodman, Jr. appears infrequently in the town records of Newbury except when mentioned with his father, Mr. Edward Woodman, with relation to the bitter 25 year controversy concerning church government.
William Goodridge of Watertown, Massachusetts, father of Mary, died there in 1647, and his widow, Margaret, remarried John Hull of Newbury, who owned a farm of 400 acres on the north side of the Parker River. In 1656 he conveyed this farm to his son-in-law, Edward Woodman, Jr., under certain conditions, as listed in the deed. How long Edward and Mary lived on this farm is not known. They lived most of their adult life on a farm located south of the Merrimack River, which Edward bequeathed to his youngest son, Archelaus.
The will of Edward Woodman, Jr., written December 16, 1693 and proved September 27, 1694, reads in part:
"To my eldest son, Edward, all lots, commonly called the freehold lots, all land in the town of Haverhill*, being about 100 acres, being part of a farm my father bought of Stephen Kent - - - - -.
"To my son Archelaus, who I make and appoint my lawful executor of this my last will and testimony, all my house lot, being about 40 acres, be it more or less, all my new house that stands thereon, together with my barn and outhousing with all my cattle, sheep and horses of what sort ever. Also the loom and all husbandry implements - - - - -.
"To my wife Mary, I give the use of the house during her widowhood. For use, one third part of the orchard, also five good fleeces of sheep's wool every year - - - - - one good milch cow - - - - - five pounds to be paid in good corn at three shillings per bushel by my executor, every year during her widowhood - - - - -."
This will was very typical of wills of the 1600's and 1700's, whereby the homestead or farm is bequeathed to a son, often unmarried, with instructions to "care for his mother during her widowhood."
* In 1711, Edward III sold the 100 acres in Haverhill to Benjamin Stevens of Andover, brother of Elizabeth (Stevens), wife of Joshua Woodman.

In 1696 the town of Newbury determined the rate for building and finishing the "west-end" meeting house. This rate was assigned to 64 persons, of which 24, including Edward Woodman III, objected to continuing to build this new meeting house "on the plains," and wanted it removed to Pipe Stave Hill. This became a bitter battle which continued for several years before finally being resolved to the satisfaction of the town.

The Ancestry of William Francis Joseph Boardman, Author: William F. J. Boardman. "
