General Notes: Husband - Edward Woodman The Second
Edward Woodman, baptized Dec. 27, 1606 in Corsham Village, Wiltshire, England, son of Edward & Collet (Mallett) Woodman; married Joanna Salway, about 1630. She was born in 1614; no record of the name of her parents. Edward and Joanna settled at Corsham before immigrating to Newbury in 1635. She died after 1687. He died about 1690 and is buried in the 1st Burying Ground of the First Settlers, located off Route 1A, Newbury, Massachusetts.
No record exists of the marriage of Edward and Joanna Salway. They were probably married in Joanna's parish, which was the custom, and she was evidently from one of the neighboring towns where Parish Registers do not survive before 1653, 1665, or later.
Edward did not like the church under which they were governed in England. So he, at age 29, and his young wife, Joanna, who was only 22 at the time immigrated to Newbury.
It is known that Edward Woodman, with his wife Joanna and two young children, and Archelaus (Edward's half brother), with his wife, Elizabeth, arrived in Newbury the same year. It is not known if they arrived on the same ship. Archelaus was a passenger on the ship James of London, which sailed out of Southhampton in early April of 1635, and arrived in Boston June 3, 1635. The ship then continued on to the new settlement on the river Quascacunquen, now the Parker River.
Edward's name fails to appear on the passenger list of the ±iÂ>James ±/iÂ>or on any of the known passenger lists of that era. It is still possible he could have been a passenger on the James, or on the Abigail, which arrived in Newbury several weeks after the James. It is also possible he could have been on one of the two Dutch ships which arrived in Newbury that summer carrying "some passengers," but "mostly cattell." A number of other ships sailed from England in 1635 with Massachusetts Bay as their destination, including the Truelove, Elizabeth, Hopewell, Increase, Elizabeth and Ann, and a second ship James (of Bristol) which arrived in Nantascot Harbor the 16th of August.
Many of the passenger lists of these early voyages were lost or destroyed, others incomplete, due to the omission of the names of religious "dissenters." Had their names been included, they would have been prevented from leaving. It is quite possible that Edward came to the New World seeking religious freedom for his family and to escape persecution.
When the town of Newbury (initially spelled Newberry) was formed in the spring of 1635, Edward was listed among the ninety-one original grantees in the proprietors' book of records. Of these, only fifteen were entitled to the style "Mr.," including Edward. Although routinely used today, "Mr." had an entirely different, and vastly more important, significance in the 16th and 17th centuries. Rich and educated gentlemen by birth or profession were entitled to the appellation of Mr.
Mr. Edward Woodman's position in the early government of the settlement is indicated by the following:
In 1636 the general court enacted that "every particular township should have power over its own affairs, and liberty to choose prudential men, not exceeding seven, to order the affairs of the towne."
The town of Newbury, availing itself of this privilege, chose "by papers," the following men, namely: Mr. Edward Woodman, Mr. John Woodbridge, Henry Short, Mr. Christopher Hussey, Richard Kent, Richard Brown, and Richard Knight. they were at first called "the seven men," then "towne's men," then "towne's men select," and finally "select men," as they are still called today.
Edward Woodman was admitted a freeman on May 25, 1636 and acknowledged to be a freeholder December 7, 1642. A man could be a freeholder and not a freeman, and vice versa. A freeman was one having full political rights and entitled to vote on the nomination of magistrates and choice of duties. A freeholder was one, who either by grant or purchase, was entitled to a share of all the common lands of the town.
On September 8, 1636 Mr. Edward Woodman was chosen Deputy to the General Court, which was located at Boston, a distance of 40 miles. The records of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, in the office of the Secretary of State at Boston, show that Edward Woodman was Deputy from Newbury in 1636, 1637, 1639, 1643, 1659 1660 1664, and 1670.
Edward was appointed by the General Court as Lieutenant of the Newbury Company on March 17, 1637.
Town records show he was one of three commissioner "to end small causes" in 1638, 1641, 1645 and 1646. Mr. Woodman at various times held many other offices of trust in the town and the province. One of these was "to see people marry," of which in 1681 he said: "...an unprofitable commission; I quickly laid aside the worke, which cost me many a bottle of sacke and liquor, where friends and acquaintance have been concerned."
At the Newbury town meeting, November 29, 1652, the town voted "that Mr. Woodman, Richard Kent, Jr., Lieut. Pike and Nicholas Noyes should be a committee for managing the business of the schoole."
For many years the church in Newbury had been divided, almost equally, between the original pastor, Reverend Thomas parker, and Mr. Edward Woodman, of whom the noted historian Joshua Coffin wrote: "He was a man of influence, decision and energy, and opposed with great zeal the attempt made by the Rev. Thomas Parker to change the mode of Church government from Congregationalism to something like Presbyterianism."
This division of the town was not due to a great difference of theology, but of church government. As early as 1645 the Rev. Parker and his party maintained the church should be governed by the pastor, his assistants, and a ruling elder. Mr. Woodman's party believed it was the right of the members of the church, and government should be by the congregation. In a letter to the church council, Mr. Edward Woodman stated, "As for our controversy it is whether God hath placed the power in the elder, or in the whole church, to judge between truth and error, right and wrong, brother and brother, and all things of church concernment."
These ecclesiastical problems, which grew more violent and partisan each year, plagued the town for over 25 years and became known throughout New England as the "Parker-Woodman War." By 1669 difference of opinion had grown to such proportions that an appeal was made to the civil authorities. The court proceedings began March 13th at Ipswich and continued on and off for over two years. The decision of the court, on May 29, 1671, found in favor of Rev. Parker's part and levied fines against the members of Mr. Woodman's party. Edward Woodman was fined 20 nobles*. Mr. Richard Dummer, Richard Thorlay, Stephen Greenleaf, Richard Bartlet and William Titcomb, fined 4 nobles each. Francis Plumer, John Emery, Sr., John Emery, Jr., John Merrill and Thomas Browne, a mark** each. All others (27), one noble. However, the judgement of the court did not bring an end to the controversy, and the conflict continued for several years.
Note: For a complete chronology, see pages 72-112 of Joshua Coffin's ±iÂ>History of Newbury±/iÂ>.
A Baptist Church was formed in Newbury with the consent of the First Baptist Church of Boston on February 6, 1681/2. The church was formed by eight residents of the town, which included Mr. Edward Woodman and wife.
March 25, 1681, Edward Woodman conveyed to his youngest son, Jonathan, "My now dwelling house, houses and barns and orchard and pasture, and all my plow land lying by and adjoining to the said houses, as also all the plow lands upon the northwest side of the street lying upon the westward side of my house, the said street being vulgarly called the New Street***." The consideration for this conveyance was "natural and fatherly love and affection" and "twenty pounds of which is yearly to be paid during the time of my own and my wife's natural life."
In the genealogy ±iÂ>The Woodmans of Buxton, Maine±/iÂ> Cyrus Woodman wrote: "This was in his old age, and was evidently an arrangement under which he and his wife were to have a home with, and be provided for, by their son Jonathan during their lives."
The date of Edward's death is unknown but it is thought to be after 1690. There was no record of a will being filed or proved.
* A noble is six shillings and eight pence.
** A mark is thirteen shillings and four pence.
*** New Street, later called "Woodman Lane" is now Kent Street in the town of Newburyport.
The following three paragraphs have been extracted from the book ±iÂ>The Merrimack±/iÂ> by Raymond P. Holden, Rinehart & Company, 1958:
The Newbury church had for some years been divided in allegiance between the Reverend Thomas Parker, their original pastor, and Mr. Edward Woodman, whom was described as "a man of talents, influence, firmness, and decision." It is difficult for us today to understand the fierce severity of this unhappy struggle, which reached its peak in 1669 and 1670, a struggle foreshadowed by the division over the meeting house when the settles of the new town broke away from the Parker River settlement.
The divided allegiance was not the result of any great divergence between the theological opinions of Thomas Parker and Edward Woodman but was largely a matter of what we would call today Yankee resentment at the real or imagined fact of being, so to say, "pushed around." The quarrel between Newbury church factions was described in a letter to the Council by Edward Woodman as a matter of determining "whether God hath placed the power in the elder or in the whole church, to judge between truth and error, right and wrong, brother and brother, and all things of church concernment." It is not important historically except as it was one of the links in the evolution of New England democracy out of feudal oligarchy.
The "twenty-five-year-old" Parker-Woodman war went on within the church and became almost a part of church ritual. It grew more violent and more partisan with every year. It became celebrated throughout New England. It was brought into court and apparently settled there, only to break out again. It kept Newbury from spiritual, but not form material, prosperity.
Notes: Marriage
No record exists of the marriage of Edward and Joanna Salway. They were probably married in Joanna's parish, which was the custom, and she was evidently from one of the neighboring towns where Parish Registers do not survive before 1653, 1665, or later.
Edward and Joanna settled at Corsham before immigrating to Newbury in 1635.
General Notes: Child - Edward Woodman
In his genealogy, John A. Woodman writes: "All previous genealogies listed Edward Jr's birth as 'around 1628,' or stated 'no record of baptism.' Harry Thompson, archivist for the Greater Parish of Corsham, has informed us the Registers of St. Bartholomew's Church in Corsham do, in fact, list the baptism of Edward Jr."
Richard Bartlett, Jr., husband of Edward's 11th child, Maragaret, was the uncle of Josiah Bartlett of Kingston, New Hampshire, the first to vote for, and the second to sign, the Declaration of Independence.
The name of Edward Woodman, Jr. appears infrequently in the town records of Newbury except when mentioned with his father, Mr. Edward Woodman, with relation to the bitter 25 year controversy concerning church government.
William Goodridge of Watertown, Massachusetts, father of Mary, died there in 1647, and his widow, Margaret, remarried John Hull of Newbury, who owned a farm of 400 acres on the north side of the Parker River. In 1656 he conveyed this farm to his son-in-law, Edward Woodman, Jr., under certain conditions, as listed in the deed. How long Edward and Mary lived on this farm is not known. They lived most of their adult life on a farm located south of the Merrimack River, which Edward bequeathed to his youngest son, Archelaus.
The will of Edward Woodman, Jr., written December 16, 1693 and proved September 27, 1694, reads in part:
"To my eldest son, Edward, all lots, commonly called the freehold lots, all land in the town of Haverhill*, being about 100 acres, being part of a farm my father bought of Stephen Kent - - - - -.
"To my son Archelaus, who I make and appoint my lawful executor of this my last will and testimony, all my house lot, being about 40 acres, be it more or less, all my new house that stands thereon, together with my barn and outhousing with all my cattle, sheep and horses of what sort ever. Also the loom and all husbandry implements - - - - -.
"To my wife Mary, I give the use of the house during her widowhood. For use, one third part of the orchard, also five good fleeces of sheep's wool every year - - - - - one good milch cow - - - - - five pounds to be paid in good corn at three shillings per bushel by my executor, every year during her widowhood - - - - -."
This will was very typical of wills of the 1600's and 1700's, whereby the homestead or farm is bequeathed to a son, often unmarried, with instructions to "care for his mother during her widowhood."
* In 1711, Edward III sold the 100 acres in Haverhill to Benjamin Stevens of Andover, brother of Elizabeth (Stevens), wife of Joshua Woodman.
General Notes: Child - Joshua Woodman
First male child of English parentage born in Newbury, Massachusetts.
General Notes: Child - John Woodman
Capt. Woodman's will was written December 20, 1705 and listed his three living children, no wife. The will was proved Feb 4 1706/7. He is buried at Durham, New Hampshire.
Note 1. The death of John, first son of Capt. John Woodman, was recorded in the "Journal of Rev. John Pike" as below:
June 10, 1705 - Deceased ye Rev. Michael Wigglesworth of Malden on ye Sabbath day. The same day died John Woodman, Jun. of Oyster River.
Joshua Coffin, in his original genealogy, "A List of Some of the Descendants of Mr. Edward Woodman", stated John married a daughter of Francis Raynes. This was incorrect, and unfortunately, this error has been repeated many times since. It is easily proved the John Woodman who married Mary Raynes, was not the son of Capt. John Woodman of Oyster River:
First - He made a deposition in April 1702 stating he had "come from Newfoundland 13 or 14 years ago and never was in this country before."
Second - He bought land in Portsmouth in 1699 and lived there until 1711 when he bought land in Kittery, Maine. By July 19, 1715 he was in York, Maine.
Third - In 1692 he was given a grant to operate a ferry from Withers Point (Kittery) to Strawberry Banke.
Fourth - He sold his house and ferry in 1724 to his son-in-law, John More.
Shortly after his marriage, John removed to Dover, where he was accepted as an inhabitant, June 17, 1657. Town records show he had a land grant of 100 acres, November 10, 1658, another grant January 10, 1659 and a grant soon after, which reads in part: "Given & granted by ye selectmen & with ye approbation of ye maj part of ye inhabitants of Oyster River as appears under the selectmen's hand ye 30th 7th month '60 unto John Woodman, his heirs & assigns, Twenty Acres of Land at ye west side of W Beard's Creek & ----"
It was on the above recorded 20 acres that Capt. Woodman built his garrison house. It was built on an elevated spot with a commanding view of the river and surrounding area, where it could be easily defended. The unsuccessful Indian attack of 1694 was proof of his wisdom. That year the settlement at Oyster River was attached by Indians of the Penobscot and Norredgewog tribes, under the leadership of Villieu, a French missionary. The settlement had 12 garrisoned houses for the protection of the inhabitants. Of the 12, five were destroyed, seven successfully defended, including the Woodman Garrison. This house, with bullets still in its logs, was accidentally burned in 1896. The hearthstone from this garrison is at the front of the Oyster River Middle School in Durham, with a plaque reading: "Hearthstone of Woodman Garrison , 1659-1896."
John Woodman took the "freeman's oath," May 22, 1666. He attained the rank of Captain of the militia at Oyster River and "remained in active service till he was three score and ten years of age, vigorous and alert." Captain Woodman was one of the outstanding men of the province. He served as selectman of the town for several years; Justice of the Court of Common Pleas, 1702-1706; Deputy for Dover to the Provincial Assembly in 1684, 1692, 1696, 1699 and 1703 until the time of his death.
The settlement at Oyster River petitioned the General Court in Boston to be made a separate parish from Dover. They elected Capt. Woodman to present the petition at the court, May 17, 1669.
In 1685 Capt. Woodman, John Woodman, Jr., and Jonathan Woodman, signed the petition which Nathaniel Weare carried to England for "redress from the tyranny of Gov. Cranfield."
The second wife of Capt. John Woodman was the widow of Lieut. James Huckins, slain at Oyster River in the massacre of 1694. During this attack she was carried into captivity by the Indians and not recovered until a year later at Fort Androscoggin.
The book "American "Commonwealth" by Frank B. Sanborn states: "The struggle by New Hampshire to break away from Massachusetts came to a conclusion when the commissioners of Exeter, Hampton, Dover, and Portsmouth prepared a simple constitution, the first by popular initiative ever submitted to the people for adoption. This was January 24, 1690. The convention held for this purpose was made up of the leading men in each town, 22 men total. The names of these 22 men are signed to the draft of this constitution, only one copy of which is known to exist." Captain John Woodman signed for the town of Dover.
On July 26, 1700 Capt. John Woodman of Oyster River wrote to his daughter, Mary (Woodman) Small at "Monamey" (Monomoit - now Chatam, Massachusetts):
"Son Edward and daughter Mery Smalle
A store of love to you by thes you may knowe that I received yours and that we ar not without feres of further trobeles by the Indons by reson thereof I can not advyss you to macke anny prparation Homward untill wee heve further proved thay r keeping of the peace - - - - - wee ar all in Resonebel goo haith threw gods marsy - - - - -

John Woodman"
General Notes: Child - Jonathan Woodman
Jonathan Woodman's shipyard in Newbury was at the foot of Woodman Lane, now Kent Street, Newburyport, near the mouth of the Merrimack River. It was here in 1674 that he built the ship ±iÂ>Salamander ±/iÂ>for Bartholomew Stratton of Boston, and for others.
On 23 March 1675/6, Jonathan brought suit in the Court of the Admiralty in Boston to recover the amount due him for labor and materials used in its construction. The following is extracted from an official document on file at the State house in Boston. ". . . there to Answer, as owners of the Ship aforesaid, the complaint & libell exhibited & presented to the said Court by Jonathan Woodman of Newberry, Shipbwright & Builder, for that the said Bartholomew Stratton, master, in behalf of himself & owners aforesaid, confermed to by Elisha Hutchinson for himselfe & Elisha Sandford for their proportions & Jno Poole for his proportions of said Ship as above said have broken their covenants made within the said Woodman . . . & doth Refuse to make satisfaction & payment to the said Woodman for the said ship according to their first and after ingagement, putting the said Woodman to great loss, charges, damages . . . ."
The owners, protesting against the payment, insisted the law of the Colony, providing for inspection of vessels, had not been complied with. The court found in favor the defendants and fined Jonathan Woodman 10 pounds.
Jonathan then petitioned the General Court, asking for release from payment of the fine, stating the ship was surveyed by a carpenter "as the custom is with us" before she was planked. He further asserted the aforesaid owners had forced him to take up the deck when partially laid and raise it four feet higher. On 16 October 1676 the Court granted his request and remitted his fine.
In 1679 the town of Newbury became entangled in the only witchcraft trial in its history. The accused was Elizabeth Morse, wife of William Morse, a shoemaker. Their home was on Market Street, in what is now Newburyport, and only a short distance from Woodman Lane, where Jonathan Woodman had his shipyard. During the initial trial, more than a score of townspeople testified or gave depositions, including Jonathan Woodman, who declared Elizabeth Morse had shown incriminating wounds. In his deposition he stated: "I met with a white thing like a cat, which did play at my legs, and I did often kick at it, having no weapon in my hand; at last I struck it with my feet against the fence ere I saw Webster's house, and there it stopped with a loud cry after the manner of a cat and I see it no more. I further testify, that William Morse of Newberry did owne that he did send for a doctor for his wife the same night and same time that I was troubled with that cat above mentioned, which was some grounds for suspicion."
After several years of controversy, Elizabeth Morse received a reprieve, and was released. Joshua Coffin, in his "History of Newbury", stated: "It was owing, we believe, to the firmness of governor Bradstreet, that the life of Elizabeth Morse was saved, and the town of Newbury was thus prevented from offering the first victim, in Essex county, to that lamentable spirit of delusion, which twelve years after left so dark a stain on its annals."
In a deed dated 24 September 1681, Jonathan Woodman, shipwright, conveyed property on Woodman Lane, to his uncle Stephen Greenleaf, Tristram Coffin, and Nathaniel Clarke, as they had "bound themselves to my father, Mr. Edward Woodman, senior, and to my mother, to pay within two years, 35 pounds for me."

Family History: New England Families #2
(V) General Peleg (2) Wadsworth, son
of Deacon Peleg (1) Wadsworth, was born
at Duxbury, May 6, 1748. He graduated
at Harvard College in 1769, at the age of
twenty-one, and became a school teacher at
Plymouth, Massachusetts. He removed to
Kingston, Maine, in 1774. He was an active
patriot, member of the committee of correspondence
of Plymouth county in 1774,
and captain of minute-men. He was an aide
to General Ward in 1776, adjutant general of
Massachusetts in 1778, and commanded the
troops on the coast of Maine. He was captured
by the British at Thomaston, when he
had only a small guard and overpowered by
numbers, after being taken by surprise. Four
months later he and another prisoner managed
to escape. He resided in Massachusetts
for several years, but in 1784 returned to
Maine and built the first brick house in Portland
in that year. This house was afterward
occupied by Stephen Longfellow, who married
his daughter. He was engaged in trade
and active in public affairs. He was senator
of Massachusetts in 1792, and congressman
from the Maine district for seven terms, 1793
to 1807. He bought seven thousand five hundred
acres of land in what is now Hiram,
Maine, between Saco and Ossipee rivers at
twelve and one-half cents an acre, and in
1795 his son, Charles Lee Wadsworth, settled
on this tract. In 1800 General Wadsworth
built a house, the largest ever built
in Hiram, and removed there to live January
1, 1807. He was surveyor, selectman six
years, treasurer twelve years and magistrate
many years, often arbiter in disputes. He
established a free school in the town house
in his eightieth year and himself rode horseback
through the village to invite the children
to attend. He died in 1849, over a hundred
years old. His epitaph reads: "He was a
Patriot, a Philanthropist and a Christian."
He married (???). Children: Alexander
Scammell, born May 4, 1774, died August 28,
1775; Charles Lee, mentioned below; Zilpa,
born January 6, 1778, married Stephen Longfellow
(parents of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow,
the poet); Elizabeth, born at Boston,
September 21, 1779; John, born at Plymouth,
September 1, 1781, a lawyer, graduate of
Harvard; Lucia, at Plymouth, June 12, 1783;
Lieutenant Henry, at Falmouth, June 21,
1785; George, January 6, 1788, died at
Philadelphia, April 8, 1816; Colonel Alexander
Scammell, May 7, 1790, at Portand;
Samuel Bartlett, September, 1791; Peleg,
October 10, 1793, died January 17, 1875.
