General Notes: Husband - Edward The Exile
Edward the Exile (1016 – February 1057), son of King Edmund Ironside a
nd of Ealdgyth, gained the name of "Exile" from his life spent mostly f
ar from the England of his forefathers. When only a few months old, he w
as sent by the usurper Canute to be murdered in Denmark, rather than on En
glish soil. Instead,he was secretely brought to Kiev and then made his w
ay to Hungary. On hearing the news of his being alive, Edward the Confess
or recalled him to England and made him his heir. However, Edward the Exi
le died shortly after his return, causing a succession dispute that ultima
tely led to the Norman Conquest of England.
The paternity of his wife Agatha is debated: the medieval sources agree th
at she was a sister of Hungarian Queen, and disagree as to other detail
s. The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle and Florence of Worcester's "Chronicon ex chr
onicis" describe Agatha as a blood relative of the Henry III, Holy Roman E
mperor. Based on these sources, prominent genealogist Szabolcs de Vajay po
pularized an idea that she was the daughter of the Emperor's elder (uterin
e) half-brother, Liudolf, Count of Friesland (1962). Agatha's rare Greek n
ame was recently interpreted in favour of a different version, expound
ed by Geoffrey Gaimarand Roger of Howden, that her father was a "Russi

Their children included Edgar Ætheling and Saint Margaret of Scotland.

Alias:<ALIA> Margaret /Ætheling/
Saint Margaret of Scotland, also known by her Anglo-Saxon name Margaret Æt
heling (c. 1045 – November 16, 1093), was EdgarÆtheling's sister. She mar
ried Malcolm III, King of Scots, becoming his Queen consort.
The daughter of the English prince Edward the Exile or "Edward Outremer
", son of Edmund Ironside, Margaret was probably born in Hungary. The prov
enance of her mother Agatha of Bulgaria is disputed: certainly relat
ed to the kings of Hungary, she was either a descendant of Emperor Henry I
II or a daughter of Yaroslav I of Kiev.
When her uncle, Edward the Confessor, the French-speaking Anglo-Saxon Ki
ng of England, died in 1066, she was living in England where her brothe
r, Edgar Ætheling, had decided to make a claim to the vacant throne. Aft
er the conquest of the Kingdom of England by the Normans, the tradional st
ory has it, however much it may be doubted, that the widowed Agatha decid
ed to leave Northumberland with her children and return to the Continen
t, but a storm drove their ship to Scotland where they sought the protecti
on of King Malcolm "Canmore". The spot where she is said to have land
ed is known today as Queensferry. Malcolm was probably a widower, and w
as no doubt attracted by the prospect of marrying the one of the few remai
ning members of the Anglo-Saxon royal family. The marriage of Malcolm a
nd Margaret soon took place and was followed by several invasions of North
umberland by the Scottish king, probably in support of the claims of his b
rother-in-law Edgar. These, however, had little result beyond the devastat
ion of the province.
Far more important were the effects of this alliance upon the history of S
cotland. Margeret used her connections to facilitate the introduction of t
he continental Benedictine monastic order, helping Malcolm to found Dunfer
mline Abbey. Moreover, a considerable portion of the old Northumbrian king
dom had been conqueredby the Scottish kings in the previous century, b
ut up until this time the English population had little influence upon t
he ruling element of the kingdom.Malcolm's marriage possibly improved t
he condition of the ethnically Anglo-Saxon population he ruled, and und
er Margaret's sons, Edgar I, Alexander I andDavid I, the Scottish royal c
ourt became more like that of its Anglo-Norman and continental neighbour
s. Margaret was very religious, and saw to the building of churches and t
he preservation of sacred relics. She rebuilt the monastery of Iona, and p
rovided a free ferry and housing for pilgrims coming to visit the shri
ne of Saint Andrew. She was a lavish alms-giver, and paid the ransoms of E
nglish hostages held by the Scots.
Margaret and Malcolm had eight children, six sons and two daughters:
1. Prince Edward of Scotland, killed 1093.
2. King Edmund I of Scotland
3. Ethelred, abbot of Dunkeld
4. King Edgar I of Scotland
5. King Alexander I of Scotland
6. King David I of Scotland
7. Edith of Scotland, also called Matilda, married King Henry I of Engl
and
8. Mary of Scotland, married Eustace III of Boulogne
Her husband, Malcolm, and their eldest son, Edward, were killed in siege a
gainst the English at Alnwick Castle on November 13, 1093. Her son Edmu
nd was left with the task of telling his mother of their deaths. Margar
et was ill, and she died on 16 November, 1093, three days after the deat
hs her husband and her eldest son. It is notable that while Malcolm's chil
dren by his first wife Ingibjörg all bore Gaelic names, those of Margar
et all bore non-Gaelic names. Later tradition often has it that Margaret w
as responsible for starting the demise of Gaelic culture in the lowlands a
nd Scotland in general. In fact, in Gaeldom, she has usually not been cons
idered a saint, but referred to as Mairead/Maighread nam Mallachd: Accurs
ed Margaret. This tradition, however, is spurious. Margaret's first childr
en were probably intended to bare Margaret's c

OF WELSH ANCESTRY
Gruffydd ap Rhys (c 1090-1137), prince of Deheubarth; son of Rhys ap Tewd
wr and Gwladus, daughter of Rhiwallon ap Cynfyn. When the old South Cym
ru monarchy disintegrated on the fall of Rhys ap Tewdwr in 1093, Gruffyd
d, the infant heir, was taken to Ireland where hewas given asylum duri
ng childhood and early manhood. When he returned in 1113, the patriotic su
pport of his younger countrymen was made useless by the cautious condu
ct of elements as yet indisposed to resist the Norman monarchy, includi
ng Gruffudd ap Cynan, who was prepared to hand his young kinsman over to H
enry I when in 1115 he sought sanctmacry in Gwynedd. The failure of the re
sistance movement which reached its climax in the open rebellion of 1116 w
as inevitable. Gruffydd ap Rhys nevertheless reached an accommodation wi
th Henry and was given land in the commote of Caco. Apart from a brief int
ermissionin 1127, involving a second exile in Ireland, he appears to ha
ve lived a quiet existence there until after Henry's death. There al
so no doubt were b Maredudd and Rhys, his sons by Gwenllian, daughter of G
ruffudd ap Cynan, Anarawd and Cadell being evidently children of an earli
er union. In the general revolt which spread throughout Cymru when Henry d
., he took a prominent part, being present at the decisive battle of Cr
ug Mawr in 1136. In the following year he d., predeceased by the redoubtab
le Gwenllian. It fell to the lot of his youngest son, Rhys (1132-1197
), to rebuild the family fortunes.

From "The Chronicles of Ystrad Fflur":
1116 In this year Gruffudd ap Rhys took the castle near Arberth and bu
rned it. Manyyoung hotheads gravitated to him and they carried off many s
poils. And he burnt a castle in Gower and slew many within. And Owain ap C
adwgan was slain.
1123 In this year Calixtus II approved the cult of Dewi Sant. And Gruf
fudd apRhys slew Gruffudd ap Sulhaearn.
1127 In this year Gruffudd ap Rhys was expelled by king Henry from t
he portion of land which the king had given him, because he had been accus
ed without cause by the French who were dwelling along with him. And at t
he close of the year died Daniel, son of Sulien, bishop of Menevia, the m
an who was mediator between Gwynedd and Powys; and none had found fault wi
th him but rather he was beloved by all.
1137 In this year died Gruffudd ap Rhys, the light and excellence a
nd strength of all South Cymru. AndGruffudd ap Cynan, prince of Gwynedd a
nd head and king and defender and pacifier of all Cymru, ended his tempor
al life in Christ after receiving extreme unction and communion and confes
sion and repentance for his sins, and becoming a monk and making a good e
nd in his perfect old age. And for a third time the sons of Gruffudd ap Cy
nan came to Ceredigion and burned castles.

First name was Jehu in some records
DIED: Exposure
Was a Phila Artillery Commander during Rev War
Was in info-W.Clawson 1997
Was a shipbuilder
Jehu and his brother Manuel married daughters of one of the leading ship builders in Philadelphia and joined their father-in-law in that business. In 1760 near the close of the French and Indian War, Jehu was at Fort Pitt building bateau x for the Ohio River where it is said that he also gained experience in handling guns. Fort Pitt had been founded in 1758 after the previous Fort Dusquene had been captured from the French in that year. The barque "True Love" built in 1764 was the first large vessel constructed after the Eyre brothers took over the shipyard. The "True Love" came back to Philadelphia in 1873 as a whaler out of Hull, England, after a 109 year career. When the news of the battle of Lexington reached Philadelphia in April of 1775, Jehu formed his ship carpenters and workmen into an artillery company of which he was Captain. His Lieutenant was John Browne the husband of Lydia Eyre's cousin and the foreman of the Eyres' shipyard. Browne was later killed in the Slaughter at Wyoming (6/30/78). In December of 1775 the naval committee of the Continental Congress called for the construction of thirteen war ships, four of which were to be built in Philadelphia. (Page Smith , "A New Age Now Begins," pg 1245) Jehu and his brothers were commissioned to build one of them and were said to have constructed the first frigate to have been launched for the Congress. That ship was evidently the "Washington" a 32-gun frigate launched 8/7/1776. An excerpt from Christopher Marshall's Diary reads as follows: 4/5/1776, I went to Dr. Youngs; not at home. We went up to Kensington; found him and several friends at work on board the frigate building by Messers Eyre. We joined them in assisting what we could till night, then came home. 4/6/1776, Near two, set off for Kens- ington, in order to assist in getting the lower deck beams on board the frigate building at Messers Eyre. I presume the recame not short of one hundred who stayed until they were all but on board. In which were included three parts of the light infantry of First Battalion, who came in war-like array. The "Washington" and the "Effingham" were burned to prevent their falling into the hands of the enemy when Howe occupied Philadelphia in September 1777. Jehu's artillery company was attached to General James Ewing's brigade on the occasion of the battle of Trenton (Christmas 1776). Ewing was assigned the task of crossing the river just below Trenton and cutting off communication with Bordentown to the South. Cadwallader was to carry his men over the river at Bristol South of Bordentown and be prepared to attack Von Donop's Hessian regiment if the opportunity presented itself. (Page Smith, A New Age Now Begins , pg 815-824) In the event Ewing and Cadwallader found is impossible to get their artillery across the river and, after a half-hearted effort, withdrew, assuming that Washington would cancel the attack on Trenton because of the weather. On the next day Cadwalleder and Ewing, aware that the attack had taken place but unaware that Washington had returned to the West side of the river, crossed over but found that Von Donop had retreated from Bordentown leaving his stores behind together with his sick and wounded. Subsequently, Eyre's guard was placed at the ferry above Trenton, then called "Eyre's Ferry". They were there til l December 30 when they crossed over with Washington and participated in the battle of Princeton. When Jehu's term of enlistment expired he returned home and entered actively in the ship building business. He laid the keel for the schooner "Dolphin" (1/25/77) built in connection with his brother-in-law Peter Browne. The schooner was finished at the end of March and sold to owners Capt. Miller, Jehu Eyre and Paine Newman. Jehu also built the schooner "Molly" at this time for the same owners. (Jehu Eyre, Pennsylvania Magazine, however Page Smith implies that the Dolphin was built in France, A n ew Age Now Begins, pg 1264) In June the artillery company was reorganized and united with the other companies of malitia artillery in the City and Liberties of Philadelphia into a battalion with Jehu Eyre as commanding Colonel. He had garrisons on the Delaware at Fort Island, Proviner Island, Fort Mifflin and Billingsport. At the battle of Brandywine (9/11/77) he was under the command of General Armstrong, his cannons being stationed at Pyles Ford which was at the extreem left of the American line. Eyre's battalion was also at the battle of Germantown and was with Washington at Valley Fo rge. On July 1st 1778 Jehu was placed in charge of the department for building the boats needed in Philadelphia following the British evacuation of the city in June of that year. That task kept him occupied till March of 1779. The following is an exerpt from the Pennsylvania Magazine President Reed of the Supreme Executive Council of Business needed ships to get through Tory privateers after the British occupation of Philadelphia. The Pennsylvania Navy had only six vessels left, none seaworthy. (Pennsylvania Archives 1st series VII 373) Merchants agreed to supply a warship of state for protection. Reed went to the Eyre yards, 3/23/1779, and bought the privateer "General Green" in stocks. She had 14 guns on her main deck, six's and four's, howitzers in her tops. (Naval Records of the American Revolution 309) The owners were Irwin, Barkley, Coxe, and Mitchell. Command went to James Montgomery (3/30/1779) one time commander of the state galleys "Ranger" and "Chatham" and the privateer "Queen of France." Lt. Sam Cassin was assigned 4/15/1779. The "General Green" sailed 5/25/1779 with 112 men, mostly from prison. They retook the schooner "Hummingbird," " William and Ann" ,the sloop "Bedford", "Generous Friend" assisted by Philadelphia private brig "Holker." They also took the British privateer brigantine "Impertinent" with no shot fired. They also took the Tory privateer schooner "Langolee." The "General Green" was sold 10/27/1779 as the season was too rough for her type.
A Philadelphia newspaper article appearing in 1907 was concerned with the then still standing old Eyre mansion built by Jehu in 1768. The article mentions that the Eyres built the frigate "Alliance." If that report is true it must have been started just after th evacuation of the city since it was newly built when it arrived in France early in 1779 having carried Lafaytte as a passenger. The "Alliance" then joined the fleet of John Paul Jones. Jehu was still serving in the Pennsylvania malitia when he died in July 1781. His portrait is in Trumbull's Gallery at Yale College (among Washington and His Generals).

Eystein, King Adils' son, ruled next over Sweden, and in his lifetime Ro
lf Krake of Leidre fell. In those days many kings, both Danes and Northme
n, ravaged the Swedish dominions; for there were many sea-kings who rul
ed over many people, but had no lands, and he might well be called a sea-k
ing who never slept beneath sooty roof-timbers.
There was a sea-king called Solve, a son of Hogne of Njardo, who at that t
ime plundered in the Baltic, but had his dominionin Jutland. He came wi
th his forces to Sweden, just as King Eystein was at afeast in a distri
ct called Lofond. Solve came unexpectedly in the night on Eystein, surroun
ded the house in which the king was, and burned him and all his court. Th
en Solve went to Sigtun, and desired that the Swedes should receive him, a
nd give him the title of king; but they collected an army, and tried to de
fend the country against him, on which there was a great battle, that last
ed, according to report, eleven days. There King Solve was victorious, a
nd was afterwards king of the Swedish dominions for a long time, unt
il at lastthe Swedes betrayed him, and he was killed. Thjodolf tel
ls of it thus: --
"For a long time none could tell
How Eystein died -- but now I know
That atLofond the hero fell;
The branch of Odin was laid low,
Was burnt by Solve's Jutland men.
The raging tree-devourer fire
Rushed on the monarch in its ire;
First fell the castle timbers, then
The roof-beams -- Eystein's funeralpyre."
Parents: Adils "Athils" and Yrsa.

Alias:<ALIA> "The /Tall"/
. Yngvar, who was King Eystein's son, then became king of Sweden. He w
as a great warrior, and often lay out with his warships; for the Swedish d
ominions were much ravaged then by Danes and East-country men. King Yngv
ar made a peace with the Danes; but betook himself to ravaging theEast co
untry in return. One summer he went with his forces to Estland, and plunde
red at a place called Stein. The men of Estland came down from the interi
or with a great army, and there was a battle; but the army of the count
ry was so brave that the Swedes could not withstand them, and King Yngv
ar fell, and his people fled. He was buried close to the seashore und
er a mound in Estland; and after this defeat the Swedes returned home. Thj
odolf sings of it thus: --
"Certain it is the Estland foe
The fair-haired Swedish king laid low.
On Estland's strand, o'er Swedish graves,
The East Sea sings her song of waves;
King Yngvar's dirge is ocean's roar
Resounding on the rock-ribbed shore." Parents: Eystein.
Children were: Onund "Braut" .
