In a list of names, about one hundred in number, recorded in the town records in the year 1638, which follows the above extract appears the following: "Henry Collins up-land and meadow 80 acres and ten." A. Chalkely Collins of Great Barrington, Mass., in a letter dated Aug. 16, 1900, says: "Henry Collins belonged to the Parish Stepney in the eastern part of the present city of London and worshipped in the old Parish Church at that place. This Parish Church of Stepney, dedicated to Saint Dunstan, is the oldest in East London, and one of the oldest in all London. Before Dunstan re-built the church in the tenth century there was a Saxon church there dedicated to all saints. The present church was built in the time of Edward IV, 1471-1483, a few relics of the previous church being preserved. ADMINISTRATION of the ESTATE of JOHN COLLINS
John Collins of Lynn who died, intestate, having been
cast away at sea, and leaving a wife and twelve children,
the widow, with her relations, judging it most meet, desired
Abigail Collins, Samuel Collins, Joseph Collins, Andrew Mansfield,
Henry Collins, Sr., and Henry Collins, Jr., to divide his estate,
which they have do as follows: to the widow, all the movable
estate, both stock and store within doors and without as her
free estate, 111 pounds, 11 shillings, 6 pence, which being
taken out of the sum of the inventory, the houses, lands and
meadow remain to be disposed, which amount to 253 pounds,
10 shillings, of which one third part goes to the widow during
her life and the other two thirds to the two eldest sons, Samuel
and Joseph Collins, equally, as they come to age. Samuel
having a good trade as a gunsmith, maketh up to him his
double portion; and this to be understood, the widow to have
the use of the whole estate until the two said sons come of
age, and then to have only her thirds, and at her death the
whole estate to the two sons, they to pay to each of their
brothers and sisters, namely, Benjamin, Daniel, Nathaniel and
John, Elizabeth, Mary, Hannah, Lois, and Alice Collins, ten
pounds in current pay, as they come to age, their sister
Abigail Townsend having already received her portion. If
any of the children should die before they come of age,
then their portion [is to be divided] equally to the surviving,
also that Samuel and Joseph Collins are not to leave their
mother, but to live with her and carry on her business for
her upon the consideration of their having the housing
and lands as abovesaid, the house and lands to stand
bound for the payment of the children's portions.
The eldest son giving his consent to the above
agreement in the Salem court 30:4:1680, it was
allowed and confirmed.
The son, John Collins, named in the settlement of John
Collins, Sr.'s estate, was christened William at birth, but
after the death of his father and brother John, Jr., by
drowning at sea, William appears to have changed
his name to John.
John Collins' mother, Ann, bequeathed 3 pounds each
to her grandchildren, children of "my son John Collins,
deceased and not named in my will before, viz: Elizabeth,
Mary, Daniel, Hannah, Lois ... as a testimony of my love
to them who were suddenly deprived of their father
and of his estate." And to her two grandsons, sons of
John Collins deceased, viz: Samuel and Joseph Collins..
5 shillings each.

According to the church records several of the children of Henry Collins were baptized in this church, among whom was his son, John, (our ancestor) at the age of eight days on January 22, 1631. Henry's place of abode is recorded in this record as Tatcliff Highway, and his business that of a starchmaker. His wife, Ann, died at Lynn, Mass., probably in 1690, as her will, dated 1690, was probated that year."[Brøderbund WFT Vol. 1, Ed. 1, Tree #1077, Date of Import: Jun 13, 2005]

A. He lived for some time at Eastham, selling his farm there by deed dated September 5, 1715 to Ichabod Higgins. The same year he purchased land at Tom's Neck, Chatham, of John Smith or Daniel Hamilton or both and settled there. He was
interested in the church and was one of the earliest pew owners. He was a man of energy and ability and accumulated considerable property. Although not the richest man in the place, he and his children together formed by far the wealthiest
family in the place in the period before the Revolution. His oldest son, Solomon, became in time the largest taxpayer, and several of his other sons had large properties for the time. From him, through his son Joseph, who went to Nova Scotia,
descended Hon. Enos Collins, a distinguished merchant of Liverpool, NS who married a daughter of Chief Justice Brenton Haliburton of that colony. From him, through his daughter Anna, who married Jonathan Crowell, descended Hon. John Crowell of
Ohio, member of Congress in 1846, and prominent in Ohio in his time.

by Abigail Collins, who was appointed administratrix of her
husband's estate.
