When THEOPHULIS was five years old his family moved from Charlottetown, Qu eens, Prince Edward Island, Canada to Squaw Bay, Lot49, Prince Edward Isla nd, Canada. This move was in 1792.
THEOPHULIS was with the family in shipbuilding, and for many years he carr ied this on and in partnership with others including Robert Dewar. He bec ame a sea captain on one of his voyages in 1830. The captain on his retu rn home brought Mr. Benjiman scott, A Baptist Minister, who had received h is licence in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, Canada. Rev. Scott stayed at the ho me of THEOPHULIS. For many years he preached in the district. In 1838 t he Captain's son, Thomas K. Wood gave a piece of land and a church was bui lt, which still stands at Alexander, Prince Edward Island, Canada. Ma ny of the Wood family are buried in the Cemetery ajacent to the church.
THEOPHULIS was quite a business man in ship building, being a sea capta in and also a farmer, he had received a portion of his father's land in 18 20, and today one know which section his land was, as the church was bui lt on it.
The 1841 Census of THEOPHULIS WOOD gives:
MARINER, FARMER, BAPTIST.
3 Males Under 16, 1 Male 45-60 and 4 Females Under 16, 1 Female 45-60.
By the time of this Census, three of his daughters Abigale, Mary and Sar ah were all married, with this in mind we see that there were more childr en than we have records for.
THEOPOLIS" Gravestone is in the Baptist Cemetery in Alexandra, Prince Edwa rd Island, Canada.

General Notes: Husband - Richard Treat
Savages states that no record of Richard Treat can be found inMasschusetts prior to his settlement at Wethersfield, Connecticut. Whilesome sources report that he was a representative at the first GeneralCourt in CT in 1637, Savages finds no record of him until he was chosenas Assistant from 1658-1665. Cutter syas that he was deputy to theGeneral Court in 1644 and perhaps earlier and held that office until1657-58. He was a juror in 1643, an assistant or magistrate eight times,from March 1658 to 1665. He was named in the Royal Charter joining thecolonies of New Haven and Connecticut 23 April 1662. and a member of Gov.Winthrop's Council 1663-64.

Benjamin Gaylord is supposed to have been the oldest son of Joseph, second, and his wife, Mary Hickok, but no record of either his birth or death can as yet be found. He with his father, Joseph Gaylord, Jr., and uncle, John Gaylord, were among the first who settled in Wallingford, before stated.
It seems that lands were given by the “General Court” to those colonists who first settled in any town. Generally these settlements were at or near the Indian villages owing no doubt in part, at least, to the fact that at those places good land and plenty of water were to be found.
Here on the 18th of January 1729, Benjamin Gaylord married Jerusha Frisbie. A few years later he moved to Farmington, Connecticut, and a family tradition states that his wife, Jerusha, dying, he again married and removed to some town in the southern part of the State.

SKETCHES OF THE EARLY HISTORY OF THE GAYLORD FAMILY
BY H.R. GAYLORD
(continued from August 28, 1873)
NOTE BY THE EDITOR - The contents of the article following, prepared by H.R. Gaylord, Esq., of Saginaw, were read at the recent reunion of the Gaylord Family, in this town, and was prepared especially for that meeting.
It was not intended for publication, and the author, in a note to us, questions the propriety of putting it in print. But at the same time leaves the matter to our judgment, in a measure. We make no apology for placing it before our readers, as the great mass, we feel assured, will read it with interest. We are further influenced to make the matter public by the advice and solicitation of friends whose judgment we respect.
In the year 1804, at the solicitation of Judge Thomas B. Cooke, of Catskill, New York, the general agent of Capt. (Caleb) Atwater, of Wallingford, Conn., for the sale of Western Reserve lands, Levi Gaylord, second, was induced to visit Ohio with the view, if the country pleased him, of making it his home, and taking the agency for the sale of the land mentioned. He took charge of the removal to Ohio of Mrs. Hannah Skinner, a widow lady, and her blind son, Joshua O’Donnell. Mrs. Skinner was a sister of Jacob and Benjamin Bartholomew and Mrs. Col. Harper.
Isaac Bartholomew and family came to Ohio at the same time, and his kind assistance to them was gratefully remembered, and often related, especially by Mrs. B., to the end of their lives.
Being pleased with the western country he resolved to make it his home. He was also urged by Oliver Phelps, then the largest landholder in “New Connecticut,” to settle on his lands, if they suited him, and but for the unfortunate failure of Mr. Phelps about that time he probably would have settled in section 2 in Geneva.
The next year (1805) however proved unfavorable for removal. A naughty boy, or, at least, a troublesome one, made his appearance in the family in July of that year, followed by a very protracted illness of the mother, thus thwarting the plans of the previous year.
In June of the next year, however, nine wagons containing the families of Maj. Levi Gaylord, Capt. David Hendry, Mr. James Morrison, Mr. Joseph Hotchkiss commenced the long and weary Journey through the wilderness of western New York and northwestern Pennsylvania to the wilderness of northeastern Ohio. Mrs. Gaylord had hardly recovered from her long sickness; but she was a woman of heroic courage, and she had two smart and every way excellent daughters, Abigail, aged 18, and Margaret, aged 15, to say nothing of Mary, the youngest, aged eight years, who took the chief care of the troublesome baby.
The oldest son, Elihu Smith, was already in Ohio preparing for their coming by planting on shares a field of corn, and Levi, the second son, then in his thirteenth year, drove one of the teams, while the “Major” drove the other; and little Polly, the eight year old before mentioned, usually walked with one or the other of her older sisters, though she doubtless helped largely in quieting the greatly troubled and troublesome baby.
At Canandaigua Major Gaylord hoped to have come to some understanding with Mr. Phelps about his Ohio lands, but for some cause, perhaps on account his financial embarrassment, nothing came of it.
Sometime in July, we think, the long train of wagons arrived at the Harpersfield settlement, near the present village of UnionvilIe where they were met by Elihu Smith and many old friends. After looking about for a few days they decided to select a farm on the Atwater tract on both sides of the “Ridge Road” next to the east line of the tract. James Morrison took the lands next west. Here, on the south side of the road, about one hundred rods west from the township line, a comfortable log house was erected, and by about the first of September the family were installed therein.
All around were huge trees, for the land was heavily timbered with chestnut, whitewood, cucumber, maple and beech, with ash and elm in the lower grounds, and when felled the brush trimmed and burned the great black trunks nearly covered the ground and were not a lovely sight. But the ground was soon cleared and with prudent foresight an orchard of young apple trees soon after planted.
After a time, there being urgent call for it, he started a tannery, first beside the creek, and afterwards near the spring south from the house. He also built a small shoe shop and for several years carried on boot and shoe making . . (missing text) . . money, the people were poor and had a hard time to make a living; consequently by reason of the poor pay and worse debts, the capital Invested was soon lost beyond recovery.
In the year 1811 when Ashtabula county was organized he was elected one of the County Commissioners and appointed Clerk of the Board, an office somewhat analogous to the office of County Auditor. Those offices he held until 1817, when was elected to the House of Representatives of Ohio. His election District included the counties on the lake shore from Pennsylvania to Sandusky, then the western limit of settlements in Ohio. This district elected one Senator, Aaron Wheeler, of Ashtabula County, and two Representatives, Levi Gaylord, of Ashtabula, and Almon Ruggles, of Huron. The journey through the wilderness to Columbus could only be made on horseback, and in November was a hard one indeed, as nearly all the streams had to be forded.
Columbus then contained only a few houses, the seat of government having been established there the year previous. The members were obliged to find board at Franklin, on the west side of the Scioba river, a mile from Columbus, and their horses were sent into the country to be kept during the session.
The next year, 1818, he was appointed County Treasurer, which he held until October, 1820, when he was again elected to the Legislature.
In the year 1821 the new office of County Auditor became elective, and though he had no wish to be a candidate, many friends desiring to send him again to the Legislature, yet, through the efforts of the friends of another candidate for the Legislature, he was made a candidate for Auditor, against his will, and was elected by a handsome majority, while he lacked only a few votes of an election to the Legislature, also. However, he cheerfully accepted the office thus forced upon him, and the next year (Feb., 1828) removed his family to Jefferson, the office requiring his whole time, where be resided until the autumn of 1827, when he relinquished the active duties of the office to a son who had long been his Deputy, and returned to his farm in Geneva, where he spent the remainder of his life in the quiet pursuits of agriculture. Until eighty-two years of age his health was excellent amid his bodily and mental powers vigorous. Then old ago came upon him, and on the 3rd of June, 1846, he suddenly passed away, being then in the eighty-seventh year of his age.
Perhaps no man in Northern Ohio was so much beloved as was our venerable ancestor and certainly no one was ever more deserving of such veneration and trust. A long chapter of incidents could be written showing his active benevolence and sterling integrity, joined to a kind and gentle demeanor and most amiable disposition; but the limit of this brief sketch will not permit. He was an early and active friend of Emancipation and Temperance, and the violent opposition of many of his religious friends, especially clergymen to Emancipation, grieved and wounded him greatly towards the close of his life.
His unselfish zeal in the promotion of every good cause was well known and gratefully appreciated by a wide circle of acquaintances in Northern Ohio, and may well be cited as an example to all his numerous posterity.
Of our good mother, Lydia Smith Gaylord, a book might be written, and yet not exhaust the long shining catalogue of her good deeds and sterling qualities. Without any of the advantages of education, she was a woman of superior mind and varied knowledge. But best of all, she was a woman who daily made her strong and unwavering faith manifest by the constant practice of good works. She visited the sick and cured them, especially such as needed nursing and comforting. Her cheerful, active and ready sympathy operated as a charm to drive disease away, and in the early settlement of the county she spent many days and nights in visiting the afflicted and administering to their wants, for many miles around. And sometimes, that she might not omit any of her home duties, she took the invalids to her home that she might, while infusing life and vigor into the poor invalids, give the best care to her numerous family. She was, indeed, a notable housekeeper, dirt finding no hidden resting place where she was mistress.
Some ten years before her death she became totally blind, and a severe fall, soon after, caused such injury to her hip and spine that she was never again able to walk; but notwithstanding her sore afflictions, she was ever a pattern of cheerfulness, never for a moment repining at her fate, or seeming to wish it otherwise.
She had in her early days made good use of her bible, and hymn book, and the words and knowledge so treasured up were now a source of unbounded comfort to her.
A well known minister remarked in the hearing of the writer, that “few ministers of the Gospel had as much bible at command as Mother Gaylord.”
But the hour of her departure, towards which she had joyfully looked so long, came at last on the, 17th of May, 1846, she breathed away her life at the age of eighty-two years.
For more than sixty-four this worthy couple had trod the path of life together as husband and wife, and for over sixty-four years no death had occurred among their children, except an infant son, either dead before or soon after birth.
Their children’s names and ages are as follows:
· Fannie, born July 1783, died unmarried, September 1799, age 16 years and 2 months;
· Elihu Smith born November 25th 1785; twice married, died October 22nd 1854, aged 68 years and 11 months;
· Abigail, born May 20th, 1788; married Truman Watkins, had four daughters and one son; died July 30th, 1860, aged 72 year and 2 months;
· Margaret, born May 21st, 1791; married Otis Johnson, had two sons and five daughters, died December 4th, 1860, aged 69 years and 6 months;
· Levi, third, born October 24th, 1793; married Selina Prentice, have raised a numerous family, are both still living (1873);
· Mamre, born March 19th, 1796, died October 16th, 1799, aged 3 years and 7 months;
· Mary Potter, born November 6th, 1798; married Julius Bowers, had six daughters and one son; still living;
· Darius Curtis, born April 15th, 1801; married Sarah C. Dikeman, had three sons and four daughters; died May 3lst, 1848, aged 47 years and 1-1/2 months;
· A son, died in infancy;
· Harvey Russell, born July 25th, 1805; married Stella M. Atkins had five sons and four daughters;
· David Lewis, born April 27th, 1808; married Sophia Brakeman, had five sons and five daughters; died October 20th, 1856, aged 48 years and 6 months.

General Notes: Husband - Captain James Montgomery
Born 1765 in Blandford, MA. Moved with his father to Harpersfield, Delaware County, NY, in 1790.
James married Maria "Mamre" Gaylord in 1795.
The Ashtabula County History mentions; “Mamre married James Montgomery and had one child and she died shortly thereafter. Mamre died in Harpersfield, Delaware County, NY, 1796.” Other sources claim they had two children, Mary Jane "Mamre" Montgomery b 1795, and a son, Levi Gaylord Montgomery b 1796.
James married Mary "Polly" Baldwin in 1796.
The Ashtabula County History says "James and his wife, Mary "Polly" Baldwin, came to Conneaut, Ohio, (with his father, Robert b 1741, in 1800?) with 4 children, three children by Mary and the first child by Maria "Mamre" Gaylord." (But, those 4 children may have been Mary Jane b 1795 and Levi b 1796 of the first marriage, and Lewis b 1798 and Polly b 1800 of the second marriage.)
RE: Levi Gaylord Montgomery, b. 1796 of Mamre Gaylord: Other sources claim Levi was left with relatives in New York, and the older child of Mamre and James, a daughter named Mary Jane "Mamre" Montgomery b 1795, made the trip to Ohio with her 3 step-siblings. Levi's dates: As published in the Geneva (OH) Times article, by H.R.R. Gaylord, on August 28, 1873.
James' children born in Ohio should probably all be born in Salem/Conneaut for the years 1802-1813 as James is known to be in Austinburg in 1814 when Colonel James, Jr. is born, and then came Hugh b abt 1820.
James owned a hotel in Conneaut, and owned, with others, a boat which ran to Buffalo for immigrants and provisions. Later they built a grist mill in Conneaut.
Elected Clerk of the town of Conneaut in its initial organization in 1804, at that time it was called Salem.
Was, for two terms, Representative for the Conneaut area/portion of Ohio, to the Ohio Legislature when their sessions were held in Chillecothe.
In 1813, moved his family to the banks of the Grand River at Austinburg, OH.
In 1832, James was Clerk of Township, also a highway supervisor.

General Notes: Husband - Thomas Witham
His brothers were William Wytham of Feering (5 miles northwest of Witham), Peter Witham of Stangate and John Witham (from will of William Wytham, 13 Nov 1592,source: Essex Archdeaconery Court Wills 1591-1597, by Frank Emmison. Peter appears as a frequent witness on other wills as well). Thomas was a yoeman, indicating a life as a farmer of some substance and standing in the community. The original wills of Thomas, dated 1601, and William, dated 1592, are still on file in the Essex Record Office in Chelmsford, England. From Thomas' will it can be inferred that he died about 1601 in Steeple Parish, Essex Co., England. Stansgate was a small abbey farm area adjacent to the small town of Steeple in southeast England, on the Blackwater River, very near the North Sea, north east of London. Much of the time the Stansgate abbey did not have an operating parish church, therefore residents of Stansgate were members of Steeple Parish. The area was and remains a low-lying marshland area of farms and small villages, very close to the sea and isolated from major population centers and roads. It is referred to as the Dengie Hundred (hundred referring to a grouping of parishes, as sub-area of a county.) In his will Thomas passed on a manor hold property rights to farms in Chich St. Osif, which lays across the Blackwater River from Stansgate, indicative of the fact that it was easier to get around on the water than by land.
The town of Witham is nearby. It is likely that the surname Witham was taken at some time when the family moved from Witham to a nearby town.
