William Owen Denny CLARK, b 1 Mar 1769, was the first white child born on Campobello Island. He married Annie HERSEY of Hingham stock, so prominent in Washington County history, in 1802, and they lived in Pembroke until four children were born and then, about 1810, moved to Charlotte, Maine where they had seven more children. They cleared a home in the virgin forest at Archer's Corner. One of their daughters, Annie, married Samuel Lewis about 1818. Lewis, who moved to the Plantation from western Maine, taught school and became the first town clerk. After marrying Annie Clark, he lived at her parents' home. He and his two children, who lived to grow to middle age, died of consumption. Annie later married William J. Smith, son of Hosea Smith Sr. and Abigail Hersey, on Smith's Ridge. Smith came to Charlotte at age 3 from Dennysville. He was a farmer and later became a preacher in the Christian Church ["Story of a Down East Plantation (Charlotte, Maine)," by Lewis B. Fisher, 1914].

BUCKS HARBOR - Richard Clark Huntley, 79, passed away quietly April 2, 2009, with his family by his side. He was born June 5, 1929, at home in Whitneyville, son of the late Oscar and Iva (Clark) Huntley. He attended Machias High School and then went on to proudly serve his country in the U.S. Navy, where he fought during the Korean War. Throughout his life he was employed at Cutler Naval Station for 33 years and retired at age 55 with his wife, Barbara (Colbeth) Huntley. Richard was a very proud father. He thoroughly enjoyed getting up each and every morning of his retirement years, having coffee with his wife and then jumping into his little green Ford Ranger to make his daily rounds visiting his sons' local businesses, checking on his oldest son's seasonal homes and looking forward to his visits. He often joked that he never really retired. He also enjoyed spending time with his two daughters, making their days brighter with his presence. In addition to his wife, he is survived by sons, Richard C. Huntley Jr. and his wife, Julie, of Enfield, N.H., Jeffrey Lee Huntley and his wife, Deborah, of Bucks Harbor, Allan Wayne Huntley and his wife, Linda, of Whiting and Gary Joseph Huntley of Jacksonville; and daughters, Paula Huntley O'Brien and husband, Herbert, of Whiting and Arlene Huntley Porter and her husband, Scott, of Whiting. Richard is survived by several special grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Meagan Randall, James Huntley, Gina O'Brien, Laura Huntley, Matthew Huntley, Jason Huntley, Ray O'Brien, Josiah Porter, Christina Trerotola, Jordan Porter, Gianna Porter, Emma Huntley, Gaven Bixler and Aiden Huntley. He is also survived by his brother, David Huntley and his wife, Carol, of Buxton; many caring nieces and nephews. He will be sadly missed by many friends including George and Pat Pobuda, and Herb and Pam Dowling. Services will be held 1 p.m. Monday, April 6, at Larrabee Baptist Church, Route 192, Machiasport, with Pastor Bill Holmes officiating. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. Burial will be afterward at Hillside Cemetery, Bucks Harbor. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts in the memory of Richard may be made to Larrabee Baptist Church or Bucks Harbor Baptist Church.
