From Some of the Descendants of Samuel Clark of Batavia and Elba, New York:
"It seems likely that Orman Clark had at least one other son and another daughter, who pre-deceased him. This is deduced from the names of the grandchildren who are named in the settlement of the estate.
"Orman Clark moved from Genesee County, N.Y., to Lyndon Township, Washtenaw County, Mich., in 1836. he settled on Section 34-1S-3E, where he lived until his death in 1895. He was a farmer and fruit grower.
"Orman Clark's will was dated November 22, 1894, and petition for probate was filed November 26, 1895. It was admitted to probate January 14, 1896. The wife and children of Dick Clark were named as legatees, as was also Lillie May Dana. In addition other heirs were: Carrie McLeod, granddaughter, Jeannie Ackley, granddaughter, John Ackley, George Ackley, Byron Ackley, and Rodney Ackley, grandsons, and Elma Ackley (or Ella Champ), granddaughter, all of Cowlitz, Wash.; Clara Freeman, granddaughter, of Oregon; Myron (or M.D.) Ackley, grandson, of California; Alice A. Bellamy, granddaughter, of New York; Charles Clark, grandson, Bay City, Mich.; Flora A Rankin, granddaughter, Minneapolis, Minn.; and Sheridan M. Knight, great-grandson. Chauncey P. Clark and Dick Clark were named as executors."

Portrait and Biographical Album, p 471-472:
Hon. Orman Clark is a farmer, whose tract is located on section 34, and he has charge of four hundred acres of land. He is a pioneer in this State, having come here while it was still a Territory, at the time of his advent purchasing fifty-nine acres of land from the Government. He was born in the township of Batavia, Genesee County, N.Y., March 1, 1809, and is a son of Lemuel L. and Rosanna (Rich) Clark, natives of New York, who lived and died in that state. The father was a Whig and did good service in the War of 1812. He and his wife were members of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Our subject's paternal grandparents were Samuel and Mary (Lee) Clark. They were farmers in Genesee County, N.Y., on both sides were of German descent. Our subject was one of a family of eleven children, and of these only three are now living, our subject, Orlin and William.
While under the parental roof Mr. Clark was well drilled in the duties pertaining to farming. He remained at home until eighteen years of age and then with the consent of his parents he went to live with a doctor who had promised to educate him. However he received only twenty-seven days of schooling in three years and during that time he was worked almost to death. He was finally emancipated and took a trip to Ohio, spending the winter there with his brother Orson, and thence went to Pennsylvania where he remained until the following fall. Next he went to New York, of which State he was a resident at that time for five years and was married to Miss Sarah A. Pearsons, a native of that state. Mrs. Clark's parents came to Michigan in 1837 and settled near Eaton Rapids where they took up some Government land and engaged in farming. There they remained until their death, which occurred near Planewell, Kalamazoo County, this State. The father was a Whig, politically, and he and his wife were in church matters associated with the Methodist Episcopal denomination. Of the ten children born to them, five are now living. Louisa is a Mrs. Whitcomb. The others are John T., Josiah D., Albert and Alfred.
After our subject's marriage he purchased land of the Holland Land Company in Genesee County and built a log house in the woods where he and his wife lived for four years. They then sold their property and returned to Batavia. There they remained for one year and then came to Michigan, taking boat from Buffalo to Detroit and thence proceeding on foot to the farm which he now owns. After securing his farm Mr. Clark returned to New York and purchasing two ox-teams and a cow he started West with his wife, three children and household goods and after a journey of twenty-one days reached the spot which he had selected as their future home. Mr. Clark was one of the most enterprising pioneers of the county, and has held almost all of the offices of the township. In 1868, he was elected to the Lower House of the Legislature of Michigan, taking his seat in 1869 and serving for two years. He and his wife have been the parents of thirteen children: Chauncey P., Sylvester N., Sarah A., Fanny F., Frank, Etta, Elvira, Flora, Annie, Belle C., Almira, Caroline and Lillie M. The children that are deceased are Almira, Frank and Charles. Mrs. Clark died April 9, 1880. Our subject cast his first vote for General Jackson and has ever since been a consistent and ardent Democrat.

From the Chelsea paper, Michigan:
ORMAN CLARK One of the most familiar forms and faces ever seen upon the streets of Chelsea will never make its appearance again among us. Probably there was scarcely a man in all this region of country who did not know Orman Clark. He was among the earliest pioneers in this part of the state. In September 1825 he purchased of the government the farm in the town of Lyndon, three and one-half miles northwest of Chelsea, on which, in the following year, he built his log cabin, and where he has resided fifty-nine years. The story of the experience of the first years spent on that farm reads far more like a romance than a relation of facts, especially to the generation that is being reared at the present time in this neighborhood. Mr. Clark was born at Batavia, Genesee County, N.Y., March 1st, 1809. On the 27th of October 1831, he was married to Miss Amanda Parsons. Five years later, almost to a day, with his wife and three children, he started on his adventurous and eventful journey for the Eldorado of his hopes in the wild woods of Michigan. His outfit consisted of an emigrant wagon, driven by two yoke of cattle with a cow led by a rope in the rear. Their route lay through Canada, and it required twenty-two days to perform the journey. Arriving at the cabin home of Joseph Whitcomb, in the town of Dexter, on the 9th of November 1836, a halt was made until a cabin could be erected, that would serve as headquarters for their own 'home. Into this cabin, with the chinks between the logs and daubed with mud, only about half of the floor of rough boards laid down, no place for a fire except upon the ground against the green logs at one end of the room, the roof over their heads unfinished, ten inches of snow on the ground, and the temperature in the neighborhood of zero, heart full of courage and free from misgivings of any kind, they moved on the 31st. of December, and commenced their pioneer life. After spending a night in peaceful, restful slumbers, upon a bedstead constructed of green tamarack poles, undisturbed except by occasionally rising to replenish the fire, to keep the frost from biting their ears and noses while they slept, they ate their Happy-new-year's dinner from a table made of a whitewood board whose legs were held in place by holes bored in the corners. Such were the comforts of pioneer life in those days. Some of these course remedied in a few days. A stick chimney was built. a stone hearth laid for the fire, the floor completed, and the wide openings between the logs chinked and daubed. Thus their home was comfortable for the advent of their fourth child, just one month later. The remainder of the winter was not spent in ease and luxury. One yoke of cattle was sold to obtain provender for the other yoke. They had a little 'pork that they brought with them, and a few potatoes. Some wheat was obtained of a neighbor, and a young man by the name of Calvin Hallock, who spent the winter with them, furnished them with venison. Mr. Clark employed his time in splitting rails, with which he fenced in fourteen acres of oak openings, for six weeks of the time using his ax with his left hand, the right being disabled by a felon [n.b., per Webster: an acute inflamation near a fingernail or toenail]. This he thought pretty hard fare, but he felt that it must be done, and there was no one else to do it. When spring came, only one dollar was left in the treasury. This he paid for a bushel of potatoes from which they cut the seed ends for planting, and ate the rest. To relate all the tough experiences through which they passed within the next two years would require more time and space than we can command at present. They were, for the most part, blessed with good health and an unwavering purpose to make a success of their undertaking, cost what it might, and they did it. Nearly sixty years have passed since then, years of resolute toil and severe hardships. Four more children were added to their household. Of the eight born to them, three sons and one daughter are living, two of the sons, Chancey and Dick, in Lyndon, Sylvester at Stockbridge, and Almira (Mrs. Howell) at Eaton Rapids. Mrs. Clark died in April 1880. For some time Mr. Clark's remarkable vigor and energy have been gradually waning under the weight of added years. About five years ago he resigned the management of the farm to his youngest son, Dick, reserving to himself the exclusive use of a gentle pair of horses and a buggy which he was accustomed to drive to Chelsea once or twice every week-day in the year, regardless of cold or heat, storm or sunshine. He was of a genial disposition, sprightly in conversation, apt and sometimes witty at repartee, and often had a laughing crowd around him at a corner of the streets. About one year ago his accustomed trips to town became less frequent, but they were still kept up occasionally, until, within the past three months, they have been wholly discontinued. He died Tuesday Nov. 19, 1895, of old age, his being 86 years, 7 months, and 18 days. Funeral services were held at his late home on Friday, November 22nd, a very large concourse of people, many of them in advanced life, evincing the high esteem in which they held him by their presence. He was the last of the early settlers of Lyndon, and will be long remembered and greatly missed."

Old Kittery and Her Families
Wittum This name appears also as Witham and in other forms. Peter Wittum and his wife Redicum (also Redigoe and Reddingon) are first mentioned in 1660. He has a grant in 1665. He lived a little north of Sturgeon Creek. On 14 March 1672/3 he bought from Abraham Conley of Kittery a parcel of swamp for the sumof five pounds. Peter and his wife Reddigoe signed a deed with their marks 17 July 1673 (York Deeds Book I) to "sell to Nicholas Hodgsden two acres of upland and swamp. On 18 Sep 1678 Petter Wittum of Kittery in the County of York, planter, sold to Nicholas Hodgsden for 11 pounds, 10 shillings, the full and just quantity of 40 acres of swamp and upland. It is to be understood that this 40 acres was agrant given Peter Wittum by the selectmen of Kittery 2 Jan 1665." Both are mentioned in 1698. He has a wife Eunice in 1723. His family appears to have been:
Hannah m. Constant Rankin of York?
Peter b. 1657; m (1) 1684 Agnes ____, (2) 3 Aug 1713 Judith, dau of Moses
Gattensby and granddau of John Gattensby.
Ruth m. Moses Bowdey 26 Nov 1697
Sarah m. William Saunders Dec 1687; (2) George Brawn
Ichabod, mentioned in 1675
William, perhaps m. Mary Nason and lived in Dover. A William Wittu m. in Newington, NH,
12 March 1717 Elizabeth Crocket and signed a petition there.
John, had a grant in 1703; m. Elizabeth Tidy 8 Jan 1707-8
It is impossible to determine the family of Peter Wittum 2nd. He had a son Ichabod, named in 1730. Other sons may have been James who m. Elizabeth Drown 12 March 1720, and Daniel who is mentioned with wife Hannah in 1729, and Samuel who witnessed a deed in 1723, and Eunice who m. about 1725, Richard Brawn and lived in York.
The children of John and Elizabeth (Tidy) Wittum were:

On 16 March 1685, Peter "conveys, assigns and sets over one-half of my premises to my son William. I reserve for my own use, during the time of my own and my wife's natural lives and to include the side fence for security and to be kept tenantable. My son is to pay me 14 bushels of Indian corn yearly and 7 bushels to be paid to my wifeyearly following my decease."
On 15 Jan 1690, he sold to Samuel Small for 60 pounds "all that messuage or tenement which I formerly lived upon with about 16 acres of land belonging scituate on Sturgeon Creek." On 16 Jan 1704, Peter sold fpr 4 pounds to William Furbish "a parcel of land scituate lying in Kittery containing 25 acres."
Land records are not the only books in which Peter and his wife were frequently mentioned. For example, he was on a list of sufferers from the Indians in the Second War, and both were mentioned more than once in the York County, Maine records for not attending church, for playing cards, and for drinking. In 1661, Peter was accused of slandering James Heard's wife, and in 1684 he was taken to court for being drunk and putting his wife and children out of doors.

History of York, ME by Charles Edward Banks
The three sons of Peter Witham, Jr. of Kittery, John, Andrew and Daniel took up land in Bell Marsh Brook Region north of Agamenticus Hills abt 1725 and the record of the several families, as long as they remained in York, will appear in Volume III of this history. (Note, Volume III may not have been published)
He was a yeoman (turner) in Kittery, Maine. Peter deposed in April 1729 that he was a soldier at Blue Point under Capt. Winscoll fifty two or three years earlier. In 1686, he exchanged land with his brother, William, getting fifty acres on Sturgeon Creek between Leonard Drown and William Sanders. In 1694, he received a grant of ten acres from Kittery, and later received another twenty acres from that town. In March 1723/24, he deeded to his son John after death of self and wife Eunice. In 1730, they had lived in York for six months when he was ordered to leave town. His wife could not be found at the time. Peter was often fined for small offences, especially for not attending church. Three of Peter's sons, John, Andrew, and Daniel, took upland in Bell Marsh Brook region north of Agamenticus Hill close to Scotland, York County, Maine, about 1725. Peter married Agnes (sometimes called Annis or Eunice) in 1684 in Boston.
Peter Witham Jr., grant of land 1699.

Samuel (49), ±27 in 1671-2, ±40 in 1685, Portsmouth tanner. Nathaniel (42) was certainly his brother, and presumably also Jonathan and Josiah, taxed with Samuel in Portsmouth 1672. Samuel's first appearance was in Portsmouth 10 Feb. 1667,
already married to Ann Leader, daughter of the distingished promoter, and neice of the wife of Capt. Richard Cutt. Whether he met her in Portsmouth or in Barbadoes is undetected; her father died after remarring, she may have been living with
her aunt or sister here. By calling Samuel was a tanner, but he was otherwise active. Jury 1682, 1684, 1685; grand jury 1683. In 1672 he and Mr. Mattoon were with John Clark at Ipswich, where Philip Mattoon was John Clark's apprentice. Lists
326c, 329, 331b, 52, 55ab, 57, 92. His will, 21 June 1686 - 8 Oct. 1691 left all to his wife for bringing up their three youngest children. Her will, 28 Sept. - 4 Dec. 1723 left all to her (unfortunate) daughter Sarah, thus shutting out our
information. She was given victualer's and innholder's licenses. In 1720 Sarah was granted administration on the estate of her father and uncle Richard Cutt and George Leader. Lists 330d, 331c, 337, 335a, p. 175. Only 6 of their children,
perhaps numerous, are disclosed.

Ann (d/o Richard gent 2), married Samuel Clark (49). His will, 21 June 1686 - 8 Oct. 1691 left all to his wife for bringing up their three youngest children. Her will, 28 Sept. - 4 Dec. 1723 left all to her (unfortunate) daughter Sarah, thus
shutting out our information. She was given victualer's and innholder's licenses. In 1720 Sarah was granted administration on the estate of her father and uncle Richard Cutt and George Leader. Lists 330d, 331c, 337, 335a, p. 175. Only 6 of
their children, perhaps numerous, are disclosed.
Research Notes: Child - Josiah Clark
Josiah (33) (s/o Samuel 49), could not have been (Josiah's 31 or 32), but likely was the one gaining witness fees by spotting unlicensed liquor sellers in Berwick 7 Jan. 1695-6. Surely it was he helping John Ford to break jail in 1702. List
330de. He married in Boston 27 Sept. 1708 Elizabeth Summers. In 1717 Josiah of Portsmouth, husbandman, sold rights in common land. (See 35)
Josiah (35) possibly same as (33), petition Stratham 1709, List 388; taxed in Greenland 1717-8, small, in 1719 "J. C. and farm" leased. In 1722 Daniel Allen and J. C. of Greenland parish were absent from meeting. One Josiah Clark married Jane
Berry in Greenland 9 May 1728.
Research Notes: Child - Margaret Clark
Margaret (d/o Samuel 49), married by 1688 John Jackson, mariner; married 2d Philip White, mariner; married 3d Roger Swain.
Research Notes: Child - Nathaniel Clark
Nathaniel (43) (?s/o Samuel 49), cordwainer, wrote, was bapt. on becoming an original member in forming the Wells Church. First appeared 1692 in Wells, in the record of his oldest son's birth. Grand jury 1701. Lists 268a, 269abc. Will, 9 Feb. -
26 Mar. 1717-8 names wife Patience (Wells) and 9 children. In 1725 the widow deeded to son Samuel for life support.
Nathaniel (s/o Samuel 49), bondsman for Josiah in 1702, and pursumably brother, unidentified but likely same as (43). [The brothers Nathaniel (wife Priscilla) and Josiah in Boston 1707 were from Ipswich, apparently son's of Sergt Thomas jr.
(see 49)]. About 1711 Mark Ayers claimed his rights in Portsmouth commons, and the selectman ruled; no such man in the rate list.
Research Notes: Child - Bridget Clark
Bridget (d/o Samuel 49), married Joseph Miller, joined the North Church and had 5 children bapt. in 1714.
Research Notes: Child - Sarah Clark
Sarah (d/o Samuel 49), had a son (Richard Clark of Kittery, of age in 1732, lived in Boston, boat builder 1736, of Dover, boatwright 1738; living 1740; d. s. p.). She married 30 Jan. 1726-7 Sylvester Mantee, sailor, from "Milford Haven in
Wales"; married 2d Capt. Robert Evans. In 1767 as heir of her son Richard she sold his rights and bought in Canterbury.
Research Notes: Child - Samuel Clark
Samuel (50) (s/o Samuel 49), is a likely son of (Samuel 49), in 1705, weaver, bought a 40 ft. houselot on Pickering's Neck. List 339. Agnes, his wife, 4 July 1708 acknowledged the covernant and was bapt. with two children (Mary and Elizabeth).
Samuel Clark's widow was taxed in 1726. Her marriage contract with John Meader of Durham 5 Apr. 1735, who soon died. In 1742 she was given license to sell her first husband's real estate; living Portsmouth 1746. The children sold their
father's house in ninths (8 surviving eldest son usually given 2 shares). (first Elizabeth and Samuel apparently died young)

The best way for me to describe the relationship, is for
example if you have 6,000 people in your data base
that are connected via interlocking marriges, and
you find that you have a marriage that is interlocked into
one of my people in my data base, then they are related
via interlocking marriages, does not matter how distant.
The difference here is that the interlocking into my data
base would link to over 724,091 people via interlocking
marriages.
My hobby is working on interlocking marriages,to any
family surname that is in my data, and I exchange with
people to find them, and to assist them in finding lineage
that link into their families.

This Thomas came over aboard the Mary & John in 1630 according to family histories and by the Mary & John Clearinghouse, where he is on their master index as #648: "Tolman, Thomas (1608-1690) of Dorchester, MA. Possibly from Salcombe Regis, Devon 14:65"[9]. Richard Anderson, however, demurs[4]. He maintains that Thomas probably migrated alone and was from the same village as Roger Clapp[5], but makes no mention of the Mary & John.

Robert Wilson was one of the first settlers at Campobello. He was born in Ballymoney, County Antrim, Ireland and he may have emigrated to America and settled in Boston, Suffolk, MA around 1751. In 1759, during the French and Indian War, he served as an officer under Colonel Bragley in a corp of Provincial troops at the Battle of Quebec. William Clark had served with Robert Wilson in the French and Indian War and they became lifelong friends, companions, and business associates. After the disbanding of the army, Wilson and Clark were for a time engaged in shipbuilding at Kittery, Maine, but after a few years came east with others, and settled as above stated. Accounts vary as to how they obtained their properties on the island. One story reports that in 1766 he and a friend William CLARK bought about two acres of land, buildings and fish flakes, (wood racks for air-drying fish) from a John Brown of Boston, who had been living on the island. After their land purchase, Wilson and Clark settled on adjacent beaches on Campobello Island, which became known as Wilson's Beach and Clark's Beach. These were probably the earliest settlements on the island. In testimony at the Boundary Commission Hearings, 1796 - 98, fisherman and trader James Nickels testified that he made voyages to the area with his father around 1764 - 65, and there were no settlements in the area other than "Prebble (sic) . . . at Pleasant Point, Chaffey on Indian Island, and Wilson on Campobello." We are unable to give the lineage of either Wilson or Clark; the former was married and his wife and family accompanied him to Campobello, and his descendants yet occupy the land that gave old Admiral Owen such disquietude. Clark married a younger sister of the Captain's wife Susanna Woodard, soon after coming to the Island. The wedding ceremony was performed by "Esquire" (David) Owen, and their fist-born was named William Owen Denny, the date of whose birth, according to the record in the old Bible, was "1st March 1769." (Note: Plato Denny was the ship's Master) It also records his being "the first male child born on Campobello." He was for a time a resident of Pembroke, but removed to Charlotte where he died. The second child of this couple, a daughter, was born "April 20th, 1772" on Campobello, the rest of the children were born in Pembroke; the youngest only a short time previous to the untimely death of her father, by drowning in Cobscook Falls, in the fall of 1782.Early in the 1770's, legal disputes arose between Robert Wilson and the Owen family, in part because it was said that Wilson had no recorded title to his land. In a court case around 1778, Robert Wilson was awarded several hundred acres of land and several buildings. The island remained a possession of the Owen family until 1888 when it was sold to a Boston syndicate.
In 1770 Laighton, together with Capt. Wilson and William Clark, a member of Wilson's command, formed a co-partnership for the purpose of cutting and preparing pine timber for shipment, came to the part of Pennamaquan that we now call Leighton's Point. They had as helpers Edmund Mahar and Luke Kelley, both Irishmen and regulars in the English Army, and a young relative of Wilson's named William Wilson. Laighton immediately built a log house, which was probably occupied by the whole company. Late in the next year, recollections of the girl he left behind him drew Laighton back to Narraguagus, where he was married to Patty Denbow. He remained in Narraguagus till the spring of 1773, when he returned to his log house with his wife and young son, who was born on Christmas Day 1772. In the meantime, Clark, knowing that Laighton would need the whole of the house when he returned, had made a clearing for himself and built a log house near the site of the late Hataville J. Leighton, Sr.'s house. In 1772, shortly after the return of Laighton and his family, Clark brought his own family from Campobello. Lived on Lot #3, near H.J. Leighton, Sr's house. The old cellar is still to be seen down in the lower field. John Clark, farmer. Lived on his father's place, Lot#3 (William Clark place). Isaac Clark, farmer, tanner. Lived on his father's place (John Lot #3 Plan of 1810 (William Clark place). John W. Clark, farmer. Private, co. H 9th ME Vols. enlisted Jan 1864, served 19 mos. Lived on his father's place, (Isaac?) Lot #3 Leighton's Point - (William Clark place).
It is to be remembered that the colony at Leighton's Point was established for the purpose of cutting timber, and this business as actively carried on, and a saw-mill was being erected at Wilson's Stream, between Dennysville and Pembroke. In 1782 before the building had been completed, Robert Wilson, William Clark, and Robert's young son were drowned while bringing a scow loaded with hay through Cobscook Falls, (Reversing Falls) near Edmunds, Maine. This accident occurred in the fall of 1782 on a beautiful moonlight evening and the tragedy was made keener by the presence of Wilson's young son, who had accompanied them to enjoy one of those unsurpassable Pennamaquan evenings, while his elders secured a scow-load of hay from one of the low meadows on the Edmunds' shore. In going up through the falls, one of the sweeps caught on a rock, and Wilson and Clark were thrown into the seething waters. As they were borne up on the tide, so close to Edmund Mahar's cabin did they go, that Mrs. Mahar and her children heard their cries, -- Mr. Mahar was away from home at the time. With the stopping of the timber business, we find the little colony turning to the soil, and in 1790, when the first Census of the United States was taken, they were all there, including the Widow Clark and her three children . . .

"June 10, 1770 -- Sunday the tenth, having no better place yet, I performed Divine Service in the Shed, both morning and evening,. . ."
"Sunday, the 1st of July, performed Divine Service morning and evening and baptized a son of William and Susanna CLARK, by the name of William Owen Denny; myself and Catherine Lawless being sponsors."
With the stopping of the timber business, we find the little colony turning to the soil, and in 1790, when the first Census of the United States was taken, they were all there, including the Widow Clark and her three children . . .

General Notes: Child - William Owen Denny Clark
William Owen Denny CLARK, b 1 Mar 1769, was the first white child born on Campobello Island. He married Annie HERSEY of Hingham stock, so prominent in Washington County history, in 1802, and they lived in Pembroke until four children were born and then, about 1810, moved to Charlotte, Maine where they had seven more children. They cleared a home in the virgin forest at Archer's Corner. One of their daughters, Annie, married Samuel Lewis about 1818. Lewis, who moved to the Plantation from western Maine, taught school and became the first town clerk. After marrying Annie Clark, he lived at her parents' home. He and his two children, who lived to grow to middle age, died of consumption. Annie later married William J. Smith, son of Hosea Smith Sr. and Abigail Hersey, on Smith's Ridge. Smith came to Charlotte at age 3 from Dennysville. He was a farmer and later became a preacher in the Christian Church ["Story of a Down East Plantation (Charlotte, Maine)," by Lewis B. Fisher, 1914].
