From James H. Maloney:
Connecticut Puritan Settlers , p 678:
COLTON, GEORGE, (called quarter-master on the Suffield record,) was at Springfield, Mass., as early as 1644. He was the first of the name known to the writer in N. England, and the ancestor of the Coltons of Massachusetts and Connecticut. He was located at (Masacksick) Longmeadow, in Springfield, soon after 1644, and a worthy, respectable settler. He represented the town at the Gen. Court in 1669. In 1670, he, with Capt. John Pynchon, Benjamin Cooley, Lieut. Thomas Cooper, Rowland Thomas and Capt. Elizur Holyoke, were appointed a committee to lay out lots, organize and sell the lands in the new plantation, (of Suffield,) by the Gen. Court of Mass. March 20, 1671-2, the general committee appointed Lieut. Thomas Cooper, and Quarter-master George Colton, to lay out and establish the bounds of Suffield; and Charles Ffery, Joseph Leonard, Samuel and Joseph Harmon, were appointed to attend the committee in establishing the bounds. In the year 1722, fifty acres of land were laid out in Suffield to the assigns of said George, then deceased. Quarter-master Geo. Colton d. 1699, and his wife d. Sept., 1689. His wife was Deborah Gardiner, by whom he had children, viz.: Isaac, Ephraim, Mary, Thomas, Sarah, Deborah, Hepsibah, John and Benjamin.
John Keep of Longmeadow, Massachusetts, by Frank Eugene, C Press of E. W. Stephens, 1899.
George Colton came from Sutton Cofield, eight miles from Birmingham, England, to Springfield in 1644. He served for many years as Selectman and was Representative to the General Court in 1669, 1671 and 1677. He also served as Quartermaster in militia. He married, (1st) Deborah Gardner, by whom he had eight children, viz.: Isaac, Ephriam, Mary, Thomas, Sarah, Deborah, Hepzibah, John and Benjamin. Mrs. Deborah Colton died September 5, 1689 and he married (2nd) Widow Lydia Lamb in March, 1692. George Colton died February 13, 1699.
The History of Hadley, Massachusetts, pg 21:
The Hampshire Troop or Company of Horsemen.--In March, 1663, divers persons of the soldiery met at Northampton and "there listed themselves into a Troope," and chose officers, viz., Capt. John Pynchon of Springfield, for captain; Ens. David Wilton of Northampton, lieutenant; Lieut. William Allis of Hadley, cornet; and Henry Woodward of Northampton, and GEORGE COLTON of Springfield, quarter-masters. These officers were approved by the county court....
One Branch of the Booth Family, page 150, syas "Quatermaster of the Hampshire Troop of Cavalry in 1668, Ensign of the Springfield train band 1681, and Lieutenant 1688. He was Deputy 1669, 1670, and 1671, Selectman many years."
Misc:
He is not listed on any departures from England or arrivals here, but "rumor" has it that he came on the Lion's Whelp. He reached the Springfidle settlement as early as 1644 & located in Masacksick, Longmeadow, Springfield. He took the oath of allegiance in 1665 & was made a freeman in 1669-71 and in 1677 was a Rep in the General Court of MA. In 1670 he & Capt. John Pynchon, Benjamin Cooley, Lt.Thomas Cooper, Roland Thomas & Capt. Elizur Holyoke were appointed commissioners to lay out lots and organize and sell the lands in the new Plantation (of Suffield) by the Gen. Court. On 3/20/1672, the Gen Committedd instructed Lt. Cooper and Quartermaster George Colton to lay out and establish the bounds of Suffield. Charles Ffeury, Joseph Leonard, Samuel Harmon & Joseph Harmon were appointed to attend them while performing that duty. in 1722, 50 acres of land were laid out in Suffield, to the assigns of said George Colton, then deceased in recognition of public service. Other honorable mention is made of him in old records, which indicate that he was a prominent, trusted & public-spirited member of the community. While no records mention his physical characteristics, knowledge from later gener- ations believe that he was spare & wiry in figure, and possessed powers of endurance conspicuous in so many of his descendants.
