Chapman was inspired to "give a description of Gilead" by the wri tings of Dr. Nathaniel Tuckerman True (1812-1887), whose "History of Bethe l" was serialized in the Bethel Courier from 1859 to 1861. Several years a fter his "History of Gilead" appeared in newspaper form, Chapman author ed a small volume of verse entitled Brief History of Gilead, Oxford, Main e, USA, and Prose and Poetic Writings. At least three editions of this boo k, which contains a four-page sketch about Gilead and many acrostics, we re Issued By1867. In an "Announcement" in the front of the book, Chapman w rote, "After becoming blind, I occupied much of my time and thoughts in fo rming the various suggestions of my mind into verse. My friends, heari ng me repeat some of these, would request me to write an acrostic upon the ir names. To these I have generally complied, until the number is quite la rge. In all of these productions, I have endeavored to express the charact er of the persons, or some desire concerning them, upon whose names I ha ve written." The son of Rev. Eliphaz Chapman, one of Bethel's most promine nt early settlers, George W. Chapman was blessed with a memory for even ts that some considered "marvelous." A successful farmer and a leader in t he Congregational Church, he was held in high regard by the citizens of ni neteenth century Gilead and Bethel. HISTORY OF GILEAD - Chapter I (Bethel Courier, March 4, 1859)
Mr. Editor: I have been pleased to see in your valuable paper articles wri tten by Dr. True, giving a description of Bethel, its first settlement, i ts growth, beauty, prosperity, etc., in his usual happy style of writin g. Believing that it would be acceptable to you, and most of your reader s, for me to follow his example, and give a description of Gilead, the to wn adjoining, and where I have passed most of my days, I shall make the at tempt.
Being one of the first settlers in Gilead, and an inhabitant there for ma ny years; and chosen one of the Selectmen, and an Assessor for several yea rs in succession; it being my duty with others to examine, survey, and app raise its entire premises, is my only apology for attempting a descripti on of it.
First, Gilead has some very prominent features, viz: its landscape, or sce nery, which is seen by travellers miles before they reach its precincts. T umbledown Dick, that grand rocky structure, whose height claims affinity w ith the clouds; and its front base skirts even the river's brink; while i ts rear is firmly connected with the grand chain of mountains which bord er our north line from east to west, with the silvery hue of waters of t he Androscoggin flowing down at our feet with a resistless force,—But I fo rbear any further comment on this phenomenon of nature, and leave it to t he artist to portray its beauty and deliver it to the world.
I now hasten to give you a more graphic description of our town as a farmi ng spot. We are situated on the great Androscoggin River, and bounded as f ollows: on the east by Bethel, Oxford, Maine, USA, on the west by Shelburn e, Coos, New Hampshire, USA , on the north by Riley Plantation, Oxford, Ma ine, USA, [and] on the south by Mason Township, Oxford, Maine, USA, and Ba tchelder's [Grant], Oxford County, Maine, USA. According to our gran t, we measure six miles long and three broad. By this survey, Gilead, Oxfo rd, Maine, USA, contains eleven thousand five hundred and twenty acre s. It is divided by the Androscoggin River in about equal parts from we st to east, by which means we have our large, rich intervales. The origin al proprietors laid out this land in ranges of lots, one hundred rods wi de each, on the river, with the customary allowance for the sag of chai n. By this division we number eighteen ranges on the north side of the riv er, the dividing lines running north twelve degrees, west to the town lin e. On the south side we number nineteen ranges, the dividing line runni ng from the river south, twelve degrees east to the town line. Each rang e, on an average, contains from 300 to 350 acres, more or less, as the riv er may favor or clip by its course. These ranges generally partake mo re or less of the river intervales, also of the plain land adjoining: exce llent for tillage. The remainder of those ranges lie back on the high land s, which is first rate for grazing. It will be seen at once that each of t hose ranges furnish a foundation for an excellent farm. Each settler purch ased a full range and they need no chemical process to analyze the growi ng properties of these soils. All they need is to be properly dressed a nd cultivated, with the smiles of Providence, to insure a bountiful cro p. I have raised on the same spot, corn, rye, wheat, oats and potatoes wi th equal success. Fruit trees grow remarkably well, when they have prop er attention. In fine, all kinds of fruits, grains and plants may be gro wn in Gilead that can be grown in Oxford County, for this reason: that the re is a variety of soil between the river and the mountain base, admirab ly adapted to the growth of different fruits and plants.
It is beautifully described in scriptural language "a land of hills and va lleys, of brooks and fountains of waters," even "the upper and nether spri ngs." This is emphatically true of Gilead minor. Professor Brown, in his B ible Dictionary, gives a description of ancient Gilead thus: "A noted rid ge of mountains stretching almost all the way from Lebanon to the count ry of Moab, at some distance eastward from Jordan." The mountains of Gile ad proper were noted for their spices, balm and myrrh; this is more th an we can claim of Gilead minor; yet we have an excellent substitute. O ur sugar maples, mountain cranberries, and large blue berries,
Our blueberry sauce, and cranberry tart,
And blessed maple honey too,
Refresh the taste, rejoice the heart,
And loss of appetite renew.
Our high cranberry jelly and maple honey, we found by experience, were ve ry refreshing to our late sick sufferer. Those of my readers who are be st acquainted with Gilead, will think I am only describing the north si de of the river. But the description which has been given, with a slight v ariation, will equally apply to the south side. As to mountains, hills, va lleys, brooks, springs and soils, they are much the same. As it respects p rivileges, as a whole, they are superior, as is every town lying upon t he south side of the great Androscoggin, from its source to its terminus.
From this consideration, [it may be seen] that our main business is transa cted on the south side of the river—more so since the Grand Trunk has stre tched its line on the south side, through the town.
Hark! hark! the iron horse with power and speed
Comes neighing o'er this spacious line;
Freighted with articles we need,
To leave by way, exact on time.
This mighty steed with flaming breath,
Employed to force the cars along:
A great variety it hath—
To leave by way, when passing on.
So you see, sir, we have our market brought to us, instead of being oblig ed to go after it—a mighty contrast between the present and the past, wh en we had to wallow through the snow banks, and ascend those massy hills w hich lay between our homes and distant markets. Then our minor fruits, su ch as apples, potatoes, etc., were of but little value, except what was ne eded for domestic use; now they are staple articles, ready cash on delive ry at our R. R. Stations, at a great advance above our former prices. Y ou see by this, that Gilead is a place of business and privileges. And he re I would close with a dash of the muse.
Hold on, dear reader, hear me through,
I'll soon relieve you of your pain,
The sugar maple first we'll view,
Surpassing China's sugar cane.
Great Androscoggin flowing down
With liquid silver at our feet,
Its banks with choicest fruits abound,
In great abundance all complete.
The cranberry meadow, too, we claim,
And to the beauteous cranberry tree,
The mountain cranberry not the same,
A rarer specimen you see.
Our massy hills and mountain rocks,
And waving forests ever green,
On the heights of which our blueberry spots,
Surpassing any e'er I've seen,
Our cattle to the mountain base,
Are drove to take their summer fare;
The prancing colt, for work, or race,
Is trotted off to pasture there.
And when to mountain Dick we steer,
To gather blueberries as you know,
We look on Bethel village near,
With all its beauty far below.
(Our distant readers are reminded that Dea. Chapman is now 78 years old a nd has been totally blind for several years.—Ed.)

Comes neighing o'er this spacious line;
Freighted with articles we need,
To leave by way, exact on time.
This mighty steed with flaming breath,
Employed to force the cars along:
A great variety it hath—
To leave by way, when passing on.
So you see, sir, we have our market brought to us, instead of being oblig ed to go after it—a mighty contrast between the present and the past, wh en we had to wallow through the snow banks, and ascend those massy hills w hich lay between our homes and distant markets. Then our minor fruits, su ch as apples, potatoes, etc., were of but little value, except what was ne eded for domestic use; now they are staple articles, ready cash on delive ry at our R. R. Stations, at a great advance above our former prices. Y ou see by this, that Gilead is a place of business and privileges. And he re I would close with a dash of the muse.
Hold on, dear reader, hear me through,
I'll soon relieve you of your pain,
The sugar maple first we'll view,
Surpassing China's sugar cane.
Great Androscoggin flowing down
With liquid silver at our feet,
Its banks with choicest fruits abound,
In great abundance all complete.
The cranberry meadow, too, we claim,
And to the beauteous cranberry tree,
The mountain cranberry not the same,
A rarer specimen you see.
Our massy hills and mountain rocks,
And waving forests ever green,
On the heights of which our blueberry spots,
Surpassing any e'er I've seen,
Our cattle to the mountain base,
Are drove to take their summer fare;
The prancing colt, for work, or race,
Is trotted off to pasture there.
And when to mountain Dick we steer,
To gather blueberries as you know,
We look on Bethel village near,
With all its beauty far below.
(Our distant readers are reminded that Dea. Chapman is now 78 years old a nd has been totally blind for several years.—Ed.)

George Whitefield Chapman's "History of Gilead" was originally publish ed in 1859 in the Bethel Courier (1858-1861) newspaper; the first of fo ur chapters appeared in the issue of March 4 and the last on July 29 of th at year. No probate record for John was found in the Archdeaconry of Berkshire, Consistory Court of Sarum, or the Prerogative Court of Canterbury, and no burial record was found for him at Newbury.
General Notes: Child - Thomas Millett
Savage notes that there are published errors regarding this family. He says Farmer gave the two sons born at Dorchester to Miller; and Dagget in his "History of Attleborough" gives all Millett children to Capt. Willett of Rehoboth, and Bliss followed that error in his "History of Rehoboth". Savage himself divided Thomas Millett into two people, one at Dorchester and the other at Gloucester.
In 1936 Frederick Weis, in "The Colonial Clergy and the Colonial Churches of New England", claimed that Thomas Millett came from Chertsey, Surrey, England, and that he was the son of Henry and Joyce (Chapman) Millett; Weis cited no evidence to support the claim.
In 1937 Stephen Millett submitted a claim to the Committee on Heraldry of the New England Historic Genealogical Society, saying that Thomas Millett belonged to the Millett family of Chertsey, because another resident of Southwark, Humphrey Millett, had a younger brother named Thomas. This Humphrey Millett belonged to the Chertsey family and died at Southwark in February 1679/1680. No evidence was offered to show that Humphrey and the immigrant Thomas were directly connected, or that they had even lived at Southwark at the same time, and it assumed that Thomas married in 1629 while still an apprentice, which is unlikely. (It should also be noted that Southwark, south of London across the river Thames, was a populous area that attracted people from all over England, many of whom stayed for only a short time.) But the Society accepted the identification and added it to their list of armorial families in November 1937. This ancestry for Thomas Millett was repeated in the Millett Genealogy by George Francis Millett, published in 1959.
Henry Millett of Chertsey and Staple Inn, London, attorney at law, signed the Visitation of Surrey in 1623, naming eight children. The will of of Henry Millett of Staple Inn in Holborne, the elder, gentleman, "now dwelling at Chertsey" is dated 22 July 1630. His will accounts for all the children named in the visitation. Henry's father, John Myllett, resided at Chertsey, but was from "Redwood nigh Lemster" in Herefordshire. Thomas was the fourth and youngest son. The family continued to reside at Chertsey.
In the 1970s English researcher Nick Hidden abstracted Berkshire wills. Among these was the will of Ursula Curtis of Newbury, Berkshire, widow of Nicholas Curtis, dated 28 January 1643. The will mentioned her "auntient servant Elenor Millett" who had married John Wolridge, Elenor's brother John Millett, and Elenor's brother Thomas Millett of New England. There are no John and Elenor among the children of Henry Millett of Chertsey.
Using wills and parish registers Paul Reed and Leslie Mahler (TAG 75:81-93) have traced the ancestry of the Millett family of Newbury, Berkshire for several generations. They say the Millett family was established at Newbury by the reign of Henry VIII, that Thomas Millett was not the son of Humphrey Millett of Southwark, and that Thomas was from Newbury, having temporarily settled at Southwark before leaving for America.
Millett says Thomas was bound to Robert Emery of Fetter Lane for 10 years. He was freed by his master Robert Emery 3 October 1631, which Millett believed was the wrong date. Both the Millett genealogy and "Second Boat" say Thomas Millett and Anne Greenaway married 1 May 1629 in England. Reed and Mahler cite Millett regarding the marriage of Thomas Millett and Mary Green[a]way in England 1 May 1629, the birth of their son John 6 May 1630 and his death in infancy, and the baptism of son Thomas at St. Saviour's, Southwark 16 August 1632. Reed and Mahler confirm that Thomas and Mary did not marry at Newbury, and their son Thomas was not baptized there. But they did not examine the registers of St. Saviour's Southwark, and could not confirm those dates.
Thomas Millett sailed from London on the "Elizabeth", William Stagg, Master: Thomas, aged 30, with wife Mary, 29; son Thomas, 2. They brought a certificate of conformity from the minister at St. Saviors, Southwark, England dated 12 April 1635. With them was "Ursula Grenoway" age 32 -- Mary's sister.
They settled in Dorchester MA. Thomas Millett joined the church at Dorchester in 1636, the year after his arrival. He signed his name "Mr. Millett", and his wife signed hers "Mary Millet" in 1637.
He became freeman on 17 May 1637.
Thomas had a grant of two acres, three quarters and four rods in Dorchester Neck 18 Mar 1637, and the same quantity in other lands.
On 28 January 1643 "Thomas Millett of New England brother to my said auntient servant Elienor Millett" received Five pounds in the will of Ursula Curtis of Newbury, widow of Nicholas Curtis.
Colket says of him: "Minister. Tailor. Coat of arms enrolled 262."
In 1655, Millet bought of William Perkins, who had been a teaching elder in the church at Dorchester a few years, all the property Perkins owned in the town. It seems that Thomas was entitled to use "Mr." because of his office in the church, for he succeeded Mr. Perkins as teaching elder. His name does not appear among the ministers of his time; only the Court Records show that he was engaged in ministry at Dorchester. "Second Boat" says descendants of Thomas Millett are eligible for membership in the Descendants of Colonial Clergy.
His house was burned in 1657, and a portion of the Records of Dorchester kept there were destroyed.
Thomas and Anne lived at Dorchester about 20 years and then removed to Gloucester. They were at Brookfield by 3 June 1675, when Thomas Millett and wife Anne gave their consent to the sale of a house and land on Town Neck to Francis Norwood.
He was killed by Indians at Brookfield.
Ipswich Quarterly Court Records 5:274 show administration on the estate of Thomas Millet, intestate, was granted 28 September 1675 to Mary Millet, the relict.
Ipswich Quarterly Court Records 5:282 show: "Inventory of the estate of Tho.
