The identification of John Towne as the father of William Towne, immigrant to Massachusetts, has been established by research of the Towne Family Association,
http://members.aol.com/_ht_a/brbaylis/myhomepage/index.html. Edmund Eugene Towne 1901,
The Descendants of William Towne. Richard Towne is given as the father of William Towne, but this has been shown to be incorrect. Cf. Towne Family Association. Potential progenitors of this family (Edmund Eugene Towne 1901, The Descendants of William Towne, pp. 5-11): William de la Towne of Alvely, Shropshire, in the year 1274, filed a suit-at-law against a parish officer. In 1275 he sat on a jury at Astley, Shropshire. Thomas at Towne, ca. 1400, owner of land about Charing, he married Benedicta Brampton, only daughter of John Brampton (a.k.a. Detling) of Detling Court from whom he inherited a manor at Throwley, namingit Towne Place. A Towne coat of arms was placed upon the windows of the church in Kennington, Kent County. Shortly thereafter he died, leaving his possessions to his three daughters. Eleanor Towne who inherited the estate at Throwley about 1446 married Richard Lewknor of Challock. William Towne, Doctor of Divinity, 1459, became clergyman of the parish at Stow in Lindsey, Lincolnshire. On 10 December 1470 he was appointed Almoner (collector for the Fund for Alms, obtained by seizure of the property of suicides) to King Henry VI. He died 1496 and is buried in Kings College Chapel. John Towne, Professor of Divinity, succeeded in 1470 to the post of Precentor (choir leader) at the Cathedral of Lincoln. He resigned in 1473 for the Prebend of Dunholme. John Towne of Irby, Lincolnshire, left a will dated 18 November 1540, leaving legacies to Anne Towne, Thomas Towne, and George, as well as to his brother William Towne of Irby. Will proved 1 June 1541.
Robert Towne, 1580, resigned the rectorship of Hockwold. Sir Samuel Towne (date?) obtained possession of Isaack Manor, East Beckham, Norfolk. John Towne, Ludborough, Lincolnshire, wrote his will 24 January 1637,naming sons Leonard Towne, John Towne, and William Towne, and a brother Richard Towne. Richard Towne of Braceby, Lincolnshire, married Ann ______ (her will dated 10 December 1629, proved 10 May 1630). Their children were:
1. Richard Towne, died 1617, leaving wife Alice, son Leonard, and daughter Helen (under age 21).
2. Edward Towne who had children in 1630.
3. Elizabeth Towne, wife of ______ Phillip. Children are mentioned in Ann's will.
4. Helen (Ellen) Towne, wife of ______ Oxman. There were children.
5. Prudence Towne, wife of ______ Walton. There were children.
6. Ann Towne, wife of ______ Armestone.
7. Katherine Towne, baptised 14 October 1599.
8. Mary Towne, baptised 15 April 1601.
9. William Towne, baptised 21 May 1603. This William Towne is notthe ancestor of the Towne family in America.
10. Margery Towne.
A Towne was an alderman in Nottingham in 1760.

Parents of William Towne given as Richard Towne (12 December 1568 Heydour, Lincolnshire, England - Braceby, England) and Ann Denton (ca. 11569 Heydour - 10 May 1630), marriedf 16 February 1588/9 Heydour. His parents Leonard Towne (1540 Heydour - ) and Ellen Greene (1544 Heydour - ), married 6 August 1565 Heydour. About Towne, Vol. 1, #3, p. 25, 1981. Name Towne stems from "tun"meaning the hedge or wall, or other border, indicating the limits of a town. W.G. Davis 1927, The Ancestry of Lieut. Amos Towne 1737-1793 of Arundel (Kennebunkport), Maine, p. 3. Great Yarmouth records show the baptisms of Arthur, son of John and Alice, and William, son of John and Elizabeth. Davis assumed that Elizabeth (Alice) died before1600 at which time there is a marriage 1 September 1600 between John Towne and Margaret Walden. As later burial records exist for Elizabeth, this marriage must concern a different John Towne.
Edwin Glover, post to towne-l@rootsweb.com, 22 June 1998.
Born circa 1570. Married in Blundeston, England

THOMAS GREEN(E) MALDEN, MASSACHUSETTS (c.1600-1667)
THOMAS GREEN (or GREENE), Senior, our original immigrant ancestor, was born early in the 17th century. A Thomas GREEN, (prob. the same person) the son of John GREEN, was baptized at the Kegworth, Leicestershire, parish church on 18 May1606. He sailed with his wife and five children to the Massachusetts Bay Colony, arriving probably in 1635 or 1636. We think that he settled first at Lynn, where he stayed at the farm of the Lady Deborah MOODY. Later, he removed to Ipswich, where his son Henry was born in 1638. A Henry GREENE living in Ipswich at the time is thought to be his brother. Around 1650 he again moved, this time to Malden, where helived out the remainder of his life.
Our most detailed portrait of him comes from Samuel Stiliman Green's 1858 genealogy:
Thomas GREEN(E) was born in England, probably abt. 1606. There are reasons for supposing that he came from Leicestershire, but no proof ofthe fact. The time of his arrival in this country is also uncertan. The first record in which his name appears, so as to identify him, is 1653, when his youngest daughter Dorcas, was born. Yet he doubtless came many years before, probably in 1635 or1636. We are inclined to the opinion that he lived in Ipswich till 1649 or 1650, and then removed to Malden. He certainly lived in Maiden as early as Oct. 28,1651, when his wife Elizabeth, and daughter bearing the same name, signed a petition to the General Court.
He had a farm of 63 acres in the north part of Malden, in that part whichis now the town of Melrose. A part of his farm remains to this day in the possession of his descendents. It was situated just east of the Stoneham raiload station. The inventory of the "old mansion house" showed he and Elizabeth slept in the parlour. There was a little chamber with 2 beds; Samuel's chamber, 2 beds; a hall, where food was cooked; a leantoe; and acellar. They ate off trenchers and drank beer (no cider barrel mentioned). He kept 1 mare, 1 horse, 4 oxen, 5 cows, 1 bull, 6 sheep, and, "the half of 11 swine."
He was selectman of Malden in 1658, and was several times on the grand jury of the County of Middlesex. As there were two other Thomas GREENS in the town. he is known on the records as Thomas GREEN, Senior; his son being junior and the other Thomas left without any suffix. He married first Elizabeth (LYNDE?), who was doubtless the mother of all his children, and who died on 22 Aug 1658, and second, Frances COOK Sept. 5,1659. She was then the widow of Richard COOK, who d. October 14, 1658; and had previously been the widow of Isaac WHEELER. She was b. in 1608,and had children by both her former husbands.
He died Dec.19, 1667. His Will, dated Nov.12, 1667; proved Jan. 15,1667-8; recorded Middlesex Prob., 5:297, mentions no wife, but makes bequests to his "eldest son" Thomas, sons John, William, Henry', Samuel, and daughters Elizabeth, Mary, Hannah, Martha, and Dorcas. Sons William and Henry were appointed executors. John WAITE, John LYNDE, witnesses.Inventory, Jan. 10, 1667-8; amount Ð285.18.2. Some of hiss children were doubtless born in England; how many is unknown.
"From all that has been gathered thus far, it seems most probable that our progenitor, with his wife Elizabeth, and at least three of his children, came over among the early settlers of the Massachusetts Colony: that he remained temporarily in some one of the new settlements, perhaps Ipswich, till about 1649 or 1650, when he removed to the northern part of Malden, (now Melrose,) the southern part having been already occupied by settlers from Charlestown; that there he came into possession of his farm, consisting of "meadow, broken, upland, and waste land, being by estimation 63 acres, with the meadow at Ensign LYNDS' ," (Thomas GREEN's Inventory';) and that with him, or near him, were living

William (IRELAND) ERLAN
A comment from Lori Greenland at lljcg@netscape.net on Genforum message board says he is from Dorchester 1648 and he became a freeman in May 22, 1659. This is where the spelling changes to Ireland. William Ireland Sr was dismissed to the new church in Boston Dec. 3,1680. In partnership with Aaron Way (Aron Waye)who in his will calls him "Cousin" he bought a farm in Rumney Marsh(now Chelsea), then a part of Boston in 1651. Abigail Greenland was evidently a second wifequote from Lori Greenland. William Ireland and Abigail his wife of Rumney Marsh sell Land (see Sulfolk Deeds 10-83 says Lori. Bernard Ireland's research says William Ireland was born in 1627 and is one in the same that married AbigailGreenland. In the records of the First Church of Cambridge published by Mr. Sharples in the Genealogical Quarterly he furnished complete data regarding Abraham Ireland and Abigail Durrant and their baptized children. Margaret Ireland baptizmal was Dec. 29,1700. John baptized 5-27-1705. Elizabeth baptized July 23,1710. Abraham baptized 4-26-1713. Thomas baptized 9-25-1715. Johnathan baptized 10-11-1719. The other childrens dates stayed the same as their births.
General Notes: Child - William Jr. Ireland
He married Elizabeth Brookings of Boston about 1680 see Sulfolk Deeds, 20-500, also see Essex County Probate for adminstration of his estate.

It is also a work in progress, and thus, subject to mistakes and errors, whether by typos or the data from other sources which may also be in error.
