He selttled estates, loaned money and donated land for a school that was called 'Hoots School House.' It later became 'Shore School House' near Deep Creek Church. (In John's will) My father, Henry F. Hoots, received , among other things, a stone jug and the strong box mentioned before. The strong box we still have but the stone jub was broken when I was a child. My father did not take that very lightly as one of my brothers can still attest to. Tradition is that the strong box and Stone jug were brougfh from Germany by our ancestors. Was born on his father's farm on Harmon's Creek in Yadkin Conty, NC on May 21 1865
Upon his father John's death in 1872, he was bequeathed "..one stone jub, one money box and the farming tools, one ax, one drawing knife, one tin can, one good pot, one skillet, one half bushell measure, one kettle, all the property that is willed to my beloved wife and not specifically spessified is at her death or when she married again is to be equally divided between my sons Henry F. Hoots and my step son Abner C. Hair. And further, it is my will that the balance of my property that I have not willed to be sold and after paying my just debts funeral expenses if any, be equally divided between my three sons to wit: James Hoots, Isaac Hoots, and Henry F. Hoots.."
The stone jug and money box, according to family lore, were brought over from Germany by Johan Jacob Huth. According to Frank's son Carl, one of his brothers broke the jub and was severely punished. The money box, a metal box with locking hasp, is now in possession of the Frank's youngest son Delma. Still in the box are several dozen documents dating from 1824 to 1900, mostly receipts for taxes, small loans, purchases, services, etc. Also included are receipts from the settlement of the estage of Elizabeth Shore Hoots, wife of Daniel Hoots, by their son John Hoots.
Little is known about his childhood but, bosed on his later life, Frank must have shown strong traits of leadership and ambition. He was educated to the point where he ran businesses which required skills in reading, writing, and mathematics.
At the turn of the century, due to parcels of land being inherited by different aescendants, there were three or four Hoots families living on or around Jacob's original farm. The complex wer referred to as "Hoots Settlement." Henry sold 60 acres of land inherited from his father and purchased undeveloped land on Harmon Creek from Kern Allgood. He farmed the land and cleared an acre or two each year.
Probably at the time of his first marriage in 1883, Frank replaced the farm's original log cabin with a two room frame house. About 1898 four additional rooms were added and in 1912 four more rooms. During the latter addition, the original two room house was detached and moved in back of the main house for use of the hired men. The main house was quite a place for its day, with large, airy rooms and the first plastered inside walls in Yadkin County. It sits on a knoll with a pleasant view across a field to Harmon's Creek. It had a unique gas lamp system in which gas was generated by chemicals and acid in a separate utility house and piped into the main house. The house was heated by fireplaces and an interesting feature was that the parlor/dining room and kitchen shared the same fireplace through the wall. When the writer was young, perishable foods were stored in a "dry well," a cool, deep hole that was drilled in the ground next to the kitchen. The food was put in a cylindrical holder and lowered into the hole by a windless. Although there was a kerosene stove in the kitchen, some dishes were still cooked or warmed in holders in the fireplace. Frank enjoyed a desert of bread dipped in molasses, originally made from cane grown in the area but later "store bought." As late as the 1940's, butter was still made by churning. The house had a "tin" roof and on a rainy night the drumming of the rain on the roof was guaranteed to lull you into a sound night of sleep.
The old log cabin was used to house black laborers who worked for about 55 cents per day, plus room and board. The best known hand was Julius Hawkins, whose forebearers were freed by the Emancipation Proclamation. In his book "Descendants of Jacob Hoots," Carl Casper Hoots says "I can well remember the twilight hours spent with Julius Hawkins around this old log cabin. Julius' forebearers had been freed some 50 years before by the war of the 1860s. Julius could blow a harmonica, pick a banjo, play mouth harp or pick a guitar. He very seldom went home except over the weekend and was always asked if he wanted to take along some meal, flour, or other groceries; never taking anything without asking for it. Such staples were usually given to him for the asking."
Frank's son Benjamin used to tell about one of the hands, who was cross-eyed, asking him to help catch a chicken for dinner. While Ben was holding the birds neck on the chopping block, the hand was looking at the chicken with one eye and Ben with the other. When he raised the ax to chop the chicken's head off, Ben let go and ran.
Frank was the last of the line who was in the mold of a frontiersman. In his younger days, he led wagon trains of local men to salt flats near Clingman's Dome mountain in Tennessee to gather salt from the original salt deposits, called "salt licks." Family stories say that he was a rough and ready leader and carried a pistol in his belt during those trips. Salt was vital in maintaining the health of farm animals, particularly dairy cattle, and was kept in a rack in the the barnyard for the animals to lick.
About 1887, Frank opened a government licensed distillery on the farm and manufactured whiskey and brandy which was hauled to markets as far away as Danville, Virginia. The still house was located on Harmon's Creek near the house. Water came from a nearby spring, through wooden pipes made by Frank by drilling holes through logs with an eight foot auger. The auger was still in Delma Hoots' possession in 1998. Apple, pear and peach orchards abounded at that time and the fruit was used to make brandy. Whiskey was made from corn and rye. The residue from the stills, called mash, was used to feed a herd of pigs. Frank's sons used to talk about the pigs staggering around drunk after eating the fermented mash. Although there was a government agent on the premises during working hours to insure that tax stamps were purchased and placed on each barrel, a good deal of illegal liquor was made after hours. Ben told of a man who agreed to buy 400 gallons of illegal whiskey from Frank. When the whiskey was loaded some men rode up on horseback, fired pistols in the air, said they were government agents, and took over the whiskey. After they left, Frank suspected a trick and rode to stop them. As Ben said, it was fortunate that Frank couldn't find them or someone may have been killed. After the incident, it was discovered that the leader of the gang was a known criminal who later shot his partner in an argument.
A cousin of Frank, Sarah, married John Craver, who started a wood working business about 1898 in a nearby village called Courtney Junction. It became one of the largest wood working busineses in North Carolina and is still in operation. All of the homes in the area had "cane bottom" chairs made in the factory. Recaning was done by the owners at home, using strips of birch wood. Rodney and his sister Jane helped recane some chairs during a childhood visit and thought it was great fun.
About 1900, Frank opened a general merchandise store on the farm with his son-in-law, Samuel W. Garner. One source of customers was a road that ran through the farm and, for a while, was a stage coach line. The coaches would stop at the store for passengers to buy food, drinks and merchandise. When a new road was built some distance away, the business dried up. The old store building is still standing.
A development that made life easier for Frank and the community was construction of a bridge over the Yadkin River in 1903. As mentioned above, goods sold by the farmers of Yadkin County had to cross the river to get to eastern markets. The first ferry across the river, established at Shallow Ford in 1749, was used by Jacob, John, and Daniel. Ferries were undependable, with long waits during busy market times, and could not operate when the river flooded.
The advent of Prohibition forced the closing of the distillery, which brought economic hardship to the family. Frank then turned to farming as his primary source of income but things were never the same. Farming was hard and the income sparse. Fortunately, the family had grown tobacco since their farm had started and, under Federal guidelines, was allotted a large amount of tobacco acreage. This was the sustaining crop, along with dairy farming, and some sales of grain and corn. Rodney remembers the unforgettable smell of the tobacco curing barns, where family members would have to man the fires 24 hours a day during the curing season. Another unforgettable experience was attending a tobacco auction in Winston-Salem, with the auctioneer chanting in a language that only the sellers and buyers understood. A major local industry was the manufacture of "plug," or chewing tobacco, and some women made pocket money sewing the small cloth bags that held tobacco for rolling cigarettes. The women were usually paid with "due bills" which could be used to trade in local stores.
Rodney's most vivid memory of Frank was watching him make wooden roofing shingles on the front porch of the farm house. Frank, usually rather taciturn with children, was very jovial that day and spent a lot of time explaining how the shingles were made. A block of wood, the length and width of a shingle, was cut from a log. The shingle maker would then judge the proper thickness and split off one shingle at a time from the block, using a frow and mallet. The frow was a long blade with a handle, dull enough so that when it was struck by the mallet, it would not cut but split the shingle from the rest of the block. Rodney was about nine years old, so Frank was 73.

Polly was the niece of Frank's first wife, Genette. Frank and Genette's two daughters were Polly's first cousins, but became her foster-children when she married Frank.

General Notes: Child - Constant Snow
William Bradford, writing in 1651, stated that Constance Hopkins (married Nicholas Snow) had 12 children "all of them ?". Only 9 can be documented with existing records. Constance, wife of Daniel Doane, is quite probably one of the three "missing" children, and is generally accepted as such, but unfortunately there is no conclusive proof, and hence, no documented proof for descendants hoping to lay claim to the "Mayflower" connection.
Research Notes: Child - Constant Snow
!See notes for her husband. 'NEHGR', vol 151 pg 427 says she is believed to have been Constant Snow. A note at bottom of the page says 'Austin, 'Stephen Hopkins' ... 9-10' (This is an account of the Hopkins family in 'Mayflower Families...', vol. 6). 'Constant Snow was a descendant of Stephen Hopkins of the Mayflower. 'Register', 127[1973]:102 has the fullest discussion of the source for naming her as Daniel Doane's first wife. It says Constant is extremely rare as a woman's given name and hence onomastic evidence also supports this conclusion. ... The mother of Constant (Doane) Shaw was a daughter of Constant [also recorded as Constance and Constanta] Hopkins and her husband Nicholas Snow of Eastham. According to Governor Bradford, writing between 6 March and 3 April 1651, Constant and Nicholas had twelve children; the names of only nine have been fully documented. Constant Snow was likely born before 1651 (Bradford's list) and probably after her sister Ruth Snow, b. ca. 1644 (Roser, 'Mayflower Increasings' [note 54], 62, 63, 66, 67, 239). The birth of Constant Doane in 1670 to Constant Snow and Daniel Doane would be about right for one of the last daughters of Constant Hopkins and Nicholas Snow.'
NEHGR vol 127 pg 102 is a note by Gilbert H. Doane, editor. It says in part: 'The authority for naming Constant Snow as the first wife of Daniel Doane appears to be a notebook on Eastham families kept by Josiah Paine, for half a century Town Clerk of Harwich. The notebook is now in the possession of the Eastham Public Library. Mr. Paine did not cite the sources of his information unless it came from individuals, so it may be assumed that he found some evidence for his statement; however, no one has discovered where he found it. It should be noted that the Mayflower Society does not accept lines of descent through the first wife of Daniel Doane.'
LDS proxy baptism and endowment are in the LDS IGI.

Notes for EDWARD INMAN:
Info on this line from Elinor Perlich, elperlich@prodigy.net.
Info on this line from Weldon Whipple, www.whipple.org.
One source lists his parents as Edward and Margaret Brouche Inman.
A son, Francis, is suggested.
Taken from "The Ancestry of Emily Jane Angell, 1844-1910"
Proof is lacking of the English origin of Edward Inman, a wealthy fox glov er, who settled in Providence, RI. However, a baptism in the parish of S t. Margaret, Westminster, London generally fits what is known of the colon ist and is presented here
with possible siblings in hopes that further research will either pro ve or disprove the connection.
When Abraham Inman of Westmoreland County, Virginia, USA wrote his wi ll 18 April 1662, he left a bequest to Anne, the wife of one Michael Phill ips. Since Edward Inman, the immigrant to Providence, RI, married as his s econd wife, the widow of one Michael
Phillips, it has been suggested that Edward and Abraham could be relate d. A close look at the chronology of the Rhode Island, USA man's appearanc es shows athat these are separate individuals.
Michael Phillips of Rhode Island, USA had a wife named Barbara, not Ann e. Their children were born within the period 1651 to 1675 and probably wi thin 1651 to 1668. The children were clearly with wife Barbara, from the g ifts of land, etc., given by
Barbara's second husband to the Phillips children.
Michel Phillips appears in 1657 in Westmoreland County, Virginia, USA a nd makes sporadic appearences well into the 1690s. Michael Phillips of Rho de Island, USA is not seen directly after 1668 when he became a freeman a nd is certainly dead by 1676 when his wife was
remarried.
In 1645 Edward was one of the "25 acre men" signing for his free gra nt at Providence. He became a townsman Oct. 27, 1651. He also lived in War wick for a short time, being recorded as an inhabitant of that town in 164 8. He sold his six-acre home lot
to Stephen Paine of Rehoboth in 1667. In 1666 he and John Mowry bought fr om William "Minnion" of Punskepage, Massachusetts, USA 2000 acres lying fr om Loguesit northwards, bounding partly on the Pawtucket River, and in 166 9, calling himself late of Providence,
received a deed for 500 acres on the Pawtucket from the Indian William "Ma nannion", this deed being confirmed by King Phillip and others. The 1666 p urchase was Wesquadomeset, the present Sayles Hill in the town of North Sm ithfield and surrounding
territory. It was here Edward and seven others worked a silver mine und er an agreement signed in 1675.
Edward was one of the 12 signers of the Providence Oath of Allegiance of 1 651/2. In 1651 and 1658 he was elected Commisioner to attend the General C ourt of Commisioners at Portsmouth. In 1659 and 1660 he was elected to t he Town Council, and in 1662
again elected Commisioner, to serve in the Court held in Warwick. He was D eputy to the General Assembly in 1666, 1667, 1672, 1676, and 1678. He w as a glover and a planter.
Thus far, no record of an Edward Inman on ship lists to New England has be en located from research either in this country or in England. The Regist er of St. Margaret Westminster does show the baptism March 5, 1619/20 of E dward, son of John Inman, and
a John Inman, b. ca. 1598, arrived in Virginia, USA on the "Falcon" in 161 9. (Note - Our Edward named his first known son John , and at that peri od the first son was customarily given the paternal grandfather's name.)
It has been hypothesized that the John of the "Falcon" was the person refe rred to in the St. Margaret parish records, and that his son came with h im and later moved to Rhode Island, USA. Although such a theory requires c oast-wise migration to New England
at an early date, therr are some interesting coincidences that prevent dis missing this scenario out-of-hand. In addition to the name of "our" Edward 's first son mentioned above, Fothergill in his Wills of Westmoreland, Vir ginia, USA 1654-1800 reports that the
will Abraham Inman, 5-18-1662, lists a bequest to a Mrs. Michael Phillip s. The second wife of our Edward Inman was Barbara Phillips, widow of Mich ael Phillips. Unfortunately, this will cannot be located.
Regarding Edward's first wife, Nora Snow in Vol. II of her 1939 Snow-Est es Ancestry points out that on Dec. 7, 1663 Edward Inman and Thomas Hopki ns gave bond to the town for any money to be used for the relief of Joan na Hazard. Nora theorizes that
Joanna (Arnold) Hopkins married secondly a Hazard and that she was support ed by her son, Thomas Hopkins, and son-in-law, Edward Inman. William Hopki ns and his wife, Joanna (Arnold) Hopkins were the parents of Elizabeth Hop kins, b. 1619. Note that
Edward's first daughter was named Joanne, possible for his wife's mother.. .....

Josias Cook lived first at Plymouth, where on September
16, 1665 he married Elizabeth (Ring) Dean. Pratt's History of

to found the town of Nanset (Eastham), and later was one of
the Deputies to the old Colony Court, Plymouth for the years
1652 to 1666. He died October 17, 1673 and in the Mayflower
