General Notes: Husband - Joe Peavoy
This Peavoy History was writen by Mary Ellen Kenney Peavoy, called Auntie Mayme, daughter-in-law of Joe Peavoy and wife of Harris Peavoy.
Joe Peavoy and his brother Thomas left from Dublin, Ireland on a fishing boat bound for the United States. Joe was blind in one eye. They went to Sheboggan Falls, WI. Joe met and married Betsey Owen when she was 16. Joe was a few years older but not sure of his age. Betsy's father apparently didn't like Joe very much. Joe took his family by oxen from Sheboygan, Wisconsin to Dodge County, Wisconsin. Joe wanted Betsy's father, Alvah Owen to give him 40 acres but he refused. Then they went by oxen to Rochester, MN, where he homesteaded 160 acres, paying $1.25 per acre. Only 2 log houses existed there at that time. City of Rochester, MN is built on this land today. Joe finally went back to St. Joseph, Missouri and that is where Betsy and their baby, John died of a fever.
They had seven children when Betsy died of a fever and also the baby, John. Betsy and baby John are buried in St. Joseph, MO. Joe took the children to Dodge County, WI, to Betsy's family and left them for a year or so. The three older boys worked on farms. Uncle Tom Peavoy took the two younger girls, Mary and Susie for a couple of years. Then Joe took Susie and gave her to the Adams in Wisconsin and they adoped her. Mary, now six years old, stayed with Uncle Thomas and his wife, Aunt Jo until Mary married Harlow Purington.
After Betsy died, Joe saw a notice in the paper that told him where his brother Thomas was living. He went to see his brother. Tom had not heard of Betsy's passing. It was in December that Joe took Susie from Tom's home and gave her to Adams to adopt.
In 1864, Harris, who was 15 years old and Bil,l who was 17 years old, went back to Missouri, worked there for 2 or 3 years and never saw their father after that. They resided there during Civil War.
General Notes: Wife - Betsy Owen
Betsy may have been named Elizabeth or Rebecca or similar name since Betsy may have been a nickname.
Betsy and her baby son, John died in a Cholera Epidemic in St. Joseph, MO and were buried there.
General Notes: Child - Harris Peavoy
In 1874, Harris went to Morristown and then to Redwood Falls in 1887 coming by coverd wagon.
Ellen Lawson, wife of Ted Lawson who wrote the book and movie, "Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo" is the granddaughter of Harris Peavoy.

General Notes: Wife - Eunice Florence Owen
Eunice was short, rotund, with short grey curly hair and looked a lot like her brothers, Martin and Levi in the face though built more like her mother. She smoked a corn cob pipe, or a clay pipe, sometimes. After dinner she would go out on the porch and sit on a straight kitchen chair, light up her pipe and puff away. Zada said she and her brother were always fascinated. "Imagine!! Seeing a WOMAN smoke!!"
It may be that Eunice was married to someone by the name of Knight also. Zada remembers a Eunice Owen Knight visiting her parents.
Margaret Adelaide1 BRAINARD [440], born 5 Jan 1858 in Dodge Co, WI; died 30 Dec 1932 in Tacoma, Pierce Co, WA, daughter of Henry BRAINARD [437] and Eunice Florence (OWEN) BRAINARD [438] . ---WILLIAM SPENCER OBITUARY d. October 22, 1908 [Posted by Sara Nuernberger on Mon, 01 May 2000 on Taylor Co, WI GenWeb site] "Wm. SPENCER Laid to Rest Sunday amid Many Evidences of Respect. The funeral of William SPENCER who died last week Thursday was held from the M. E. church Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, Rev. D. R. DUNN, assisted by Rev. S. W. INGHAM officiating. The G. A. R. of which the deceased was a member, and the W. R. C. each attended the body. Altho the weather was threatening, a large number of friends gathered to pay their last tribute to a much respected citizen. Wm. SPENCER was born at Louisville, Kentucky, February 8, 1848. When war broke out, altho too young to regularly enlist he gave his services in different ways until 1864 when he joined Co. H. of the Fourth Kentucky cavalry. Soon after the war he came to Wisconsin and was married to Miss Margaret BRAINARD at Whitehall. In the early eighties he moved to Medford, and for a long time was section foreman and was often given charge of the W. C. R. R. work train. Later he started a dray line, which however, he turned over to his sons in order to again take charge of R. R. construction crews. He was a quiet unassuming man who was never heard to say a word against anyone. Altho not aspiring to public office, he was a number of years alderman from the second ward until he moved to the third. He scarcely knew a sick day until about two years ago when malignant growth that caused his death first made its appearnce, but even to the end, and during the severest suffering he showed the courage of the true soldier that he was and bore it all with patience. Besides a wife, seven children survive him; two, Mrs. Clara SEVERANCE and Edna MAY having preceded him to the other shore, Mrs. H. KENNEDY, of Kenton, Mich, Fred SPENCER, Spokan Wash., Wm. SPENCER, Jr., Mrs. R. D. LYTLE, Tacoma, Wash., Lawrence SPENCER, St. Paul, Ralph SPENCER, St. Paul and Ruth SPENCER. "
Mrs. SPENCER and family have the sympathy of the entire community during their bereavement.

The full name of the parish where John Owen was born was Llanfair Mathafarn in Wales.
Torrey and Colket state that John OWEN was in Windsor before 3 Oct 1650, the date he m. Rebecca WADE. Colket refs: "Desc. of John Owen" (1941) NEHGR 83:39 (desc.)
Few passenger lists remain for that period - and the only way we can often know the APPROXIMATE time of immigration is the first remaining public record of a person in New England. As John arrived a single man, he would not likely have owned property before marriage, and probably worked for another
family and lived with another family.
---Sandy. [Staff Specialist for Colonial New England Research and NSDAR Information]
Whilst at the National Library last Friday I enquired about Mathafarn, and have now identified it. The full name is Llanfair Mathafarn Eithaf. This, together with the fact that it is on the Isle of Anglesey, with which I am not very familiar, probably explains why I did not identify it earlier.
It survives as the name of a parish, but I can find no township or even hamlet of the name on my 1.6 mile to the inch motoring atlas. I will try and look at an Ordnance Survey map at a larger scale sometime.
I do know where the parish is tho'. Anglesey is roughly a diamond shape, but wider E-W than N-S. Llanfair Mathafarn Eithaf is about in the middle of the NE coast. This would tie in if John Owen were a cabin boy.
This could be where my help to you stops tho'. Unfortunately the survival rate for Welsh parish records is quite poor compared with English (and US!) ones. The earliest surviving parish register from Llanfair Mathafarn Eithaf is that for 1753. Bishop's transcripts, the copies of the registers sent annually to the Bishop of the diocese are of little more help. They exist for 1678, 1684, 1686 1690 ........
When I have the opportunity I will see whether I can find anything more about him. NB Regular passenger and crew lists did not start until the 19th. century.
