There are several Hanson Families listed in the 1851 census for CharlotteCo., NB and it is impossible at this stage to pinpoint Laura's family. Infamily notes it is suggested that her father was Clark Hanson with UEroots. She was also known as Hannah. She was a tall, big-framed, thinwoman, who is rumoured to be part Spanish and to have had a fiery temperaccording to her grandson. She married Bill White after John's death.

They built a home in Mayfield on what later was the Goodine property. As a young man, Benjamin sailed around the Horn (Cape Horn ?) to California with his brother Samuel and spent one or two years there. He returned, married, farmed and lumbered. His life had a tragic ending by poison. He got up at night because he had indigestion to take baking soda. But instead, he took arsenic. [JP]

BOOK - Rideouts In America
Frank Herbert Hanson, widely and favorably known among the teachers ofNewark, was born in Portland, Maine, September 11, 1861. He inheritedhis love for teaching from both his parents. James Hobbs Hanson, thefather of Frank Herbert Hanson, was a well-known educator of his day anda graduate of Waterville College (now Colby College) in the class of1842. In September 1843 he became preceptor of Waterville Academy at atime when the school had only five scholars. In March 1854, when heresigned by reason of ill health, 150 students were enrolled in theinstitution. From 1854 to 1857 he was the principal of the high schoolin Eastport, Maine. He then became principal of the Boy's High School inPortland, Maine and held this position for seven years. In 1865, hereturned to Waterville and took charge of Waterville Academy (now CoburnClassical Institute) making it a preparatory school to the University. Here he remained princial after 40 years of service in the one school, until his death in 1894. As a Greek and Latin scholar he stoodpreeminent. Among the fruits of his unceasing service was the gift of$50,000from ex-Governor Coburn to the Institute, in consequence of whichthe name was changed to Coburn Classical Institute. Besides teaching,Mr. Hanson found time to write many text books, all of which werepublishedby Ginn & Co. of New York. Frank Herbert Hanson's mother, MaryEllen (Field) Hanson, daughter of Captain Benjamin Field, of Sydney,Maine, was also a teacher in the Waterville Institute. She was at thehead of the primary department of the school for the greater part of herlife.
With such a heredity, it is not at all strange that Frank Herbert Hansonearly evinced an aptitude for study. After a good preparation, heentered Waterville Classical Institute from which he graduated in 1877.In 1879 he entered Colby University, now Colby College and graduated in1883 with the degree of A.B. In 1886, he obtained his degree of A.M.Meantime, he spent a year in business, but quickly decided that he wasfar better qualified for teaching than for business. He gave up hisposition with Chase Brothers of Rochester, New York, and went to AtlanticCity, New Jersey to fill the post of principal of a grammar school. In1888, he removed to Newark and was appointed the principal of WashingtonStreet School. Ten years later he was placed at the head of LawrenceStreet to South Market Street School as its principal. There he remaineduntil September 1912, when he was appointed principal of Burnet StreetSchool.
All of Mr. Hanson's energies have not been absorbed by his duties as ateacher. He has delivered public lectures on travel in the New York CityLecture Course, in the Newark Lecture Course, the Irvington LectureCourse, and others. He is also one of the Directors of the Teachers'andImprovers' Building and Loan Association, a member of the Essex CameraClub, of the Maine Society of New York and also secretary of the NewarkPublic School Athletic Association for 10 years. He is also a member ofthe New York State Council of Education, of the Schoolmasters Club of NewYork and of Neward Schoolmen's Club.
Mr. Hanson is also affiliated with several fraternal societies, beingamember of Hope Lodge, No. 124 East Orange, Free and Accepted Masons;andof the Royal Arcanum, Woodside Council.
Mr. Hanson married Jun 20, 1885, Mary Alice, daughter of William K. andMary (Thompson) Wyman. They had 2 children: Helen Sophia (mar. GeorgeEdmund Smith of Lexington, Mass.)

Died in NH at age 80. He and his wife are buried in unmarked gravesin the "Waldron Cemetery"on Route 4, in the second block East on Main Street, Dover,NH. Thereis the "Hanson Memorial Tablet" in Dover-on the West side of Knox Marsh Road, just before the Madbury/Dover line in honor of Thomas Hanson. The monument provides the connection to John Hanson and Mary Frances Pritchard as his parentsand refers to Halifax,Yorkshire and Hans de Rastrick, father of John de Rastrick. The Hanson plot is North end of Wentworth Street. Thomas emigrated first toSalem,Essex Co. MA. He then moved to Kittery,ME and finally Dover,NH in 1639. Thomas had a land grant of 100 acres of land near Salmon Falls,NH bounded by Joseph Austin,Nathaniel Twomly,Job Clements and Jeremy Tebbets. This parcel was granted on 2s:11m: 1658 and remained in Hanson family until 1913. he was taxed at Cochechae12d:8m:1658. He bought marsh and upland there from Richard Cutt,JohnTuttle andRalph Twombly on 9d:2m:1660. Cochechae or Cocheco was a settlement that grew uparound the Cocheco River-It is now the City of Dover. At this time , "Dover" was considered all of the area around present day Dover-Somersworth,Rollinsford,Madbury,Durham(Oyster River), Dover point and Lee. He lived in Nock Marsh. Thomaswas married before Mary in 1636. The surname not known.

John and his family lived on the outside of Town. (at Knox Marsh), and suffered the killing of two children in 1724. His wife , a fourteen day old child, twodaughters and a son were carried off by the indians. He redeemed all but Sarah the next year and died at Crown point in 1727 whilst on a journey to redeem her. Sarah is referred to as an example of a " white Indian" by Laurel Thatcher Ulrich, citing James Axtell. Since she went unredeemed( due to the unfortunate death of her father on a trip to do so., she was adopted by Canadian Indians and eventually married a Frenchman and remained in Canada. His wife Elizabeth isone of the most famous Indian captives of the 17th century. An account of her captivity was published in a 1728 pamphlet entitled God
s Mercy surmounting Man
s crueltyExemplifyed in Captivity and Redemption of Elizabeth Hamson... In which re inserted, Sundry remarkable preservations, Deliverances, and Marks of Care of Kindness of providence. She was taken by a band of Indians and taken to Canada, where she was sold to the French. She was blessed with imperrious, yet kind captor whodid not kill her newborn baby, but instead helped her carry the child-and assist her-as they climbed the mountains on the way to Canada. Elizabeth survivied inlarge part because she bonded with the native women in her band, who taught herthe necessary survival skills for both her and her infant duringthe trip from seacoast of NH to the wilds of Canada.

Additions Aug 2009 - Source: Rick Libbey - In 1876 he was a bookkeeper in Eureka, CA. The following is from an obituary news clipping:
Howard A. Libbey was probably as well known in Humboldt county as any other of our citizens. He was born 4 June 1852, at St. Stephen, New Brunswick, and was consequently 44 years, 3 months and 18 days of age at the time of his death. He came to Humboldt in the early (18)70's and after working in the woods for a while, he entered the employ of W. J. McNamara and took charge of his store at Table Bluff. About ten years ago he accepted a position as Teller in the Humboldt county bank, and upon the death of Mr. Everding, three years ago, he was appointed cashier, which position he filled with ability until his fatal illness. He was a member in good standing of the Lincoln Lodge, K. of P., and No Surrender Lodge of Orangemen. Of the later he has been secretary for several years. (Dated 22 Sept. 1896)

His will is printed in the Mayflower Descendant, Vol. XI, pg. 92. He was
in Plymouth in 1633.
Death: Plymouth Register of Marriages and Burials for 1652, in Nathaniel
B. Shurtleffs Records of New Plymouth, Vol. 8, pg. 14, reads: "William
Pontus died the 9th of Febrewary."
Marriage: "William Brewster: The Father of New England" by Rev. Harold
Kirk-Smith, 1992, pg. 117: "On 13 November 1610 [in Leyden], William
Brewster was a witness to the betrothal of William Pontus and Wybra
Hanson". He cites: [Plooij, D., & J. Rendel Harris, "Leyden Documents
Relating to the Pilgrim Fathers", pg. iv.]

-----------------
PONTUS,WILLIAM-William Pontus was one of the Leiden Separatists, being
found in the records there as a fustian weaver (Dexter, p. 629). He was
betrothed to Wybra Hanson 13 November 1610, with William Brewster among
the witnesses. The Dutch records describe him in 1622 as living with his
wife and daughter Mary, and being too poor to be taxed. He was on the
1633 list of Plymouth freemen, but was not on the 1633 and 1634 tax
lists, nor on the 1643 ATBA, which might indicate that he was then over
sixty years of age. He died 9 February 1652/53, having made his will on
9 September 1650, proved 4 March 1652153, in which he named his daughters
Mary and Hannah. Mary married (1) James Glass and (2) Philip Delano.
Hannah married (1) John Churchill and (2) Giles Rickard. Much of what is
known about William Pontus was written up and documented in Moore
Families, p. 423-28.

------------------------
WILLIAM PONTUS
ORIGIN: Leiden, Holland
MIGRATION: 1632
FIRST RESIDENCE: Plymouth
OCCUPATION: Fustian-worker (from Leiden marriage record).
FREEMAN: In "1633" Plymouth list of freemen ahead of those admitted 1
January 1632/3 [PCR 1:3]. In 7 March 1636/7 list of Plymouth Colony
freemen [PCR 1:52], and in Plymouth section of 1639 list [PCR 8:174].
EDUCATION: Signed his will by mark.
OFFICES: Plymouth trial jury, 7 June 1636, 7 March 1636/7, 4 September
1638 [PCR 1:42, 96, 7:5].
COMMENTS: Pope says that Pontus was "from near Dover, England," but the
marriage record says only from England, and then adds (as translated)
"living in the Marendorp near Douveren," which may explain the confusion.
His bride is also said to be from England.
On 15 October 1622 William Pontus lived in the Zevenhuysen section of
Leiden with his wife and daughter, was a woolcarder, and was "too poor to
be taxed" [Dexter 629]. This daughter is assumed to be Mary, described in
the will of William Pontus as "my eldest daughter."
The appearance of William Pontus in the "1633" list of Plymouth freemen,
early enough to have been admitted no later than 1632, and his former
residence in Leiden, lead to the conclusion that he was probably on one
of the last two ships known to have brought members of the Leiden
congregation, in 1629 or 1630. His absence from the 1633 and 1634 tax
lists indicates that his estate had not improved since 1622, and his
absence from the 1643 list of men able to bear arms suggests that he was
already sixty, and so perhaps born a few years before 1585, as estimated
above.
On 6 February 1638/9 "John Dunhame and Will[ia]m Pontus do undertake to
procure the herring weir repaired and drawn and what they agree for with
any that shall do the work shall be paid by the whole town according to
each in proportion of shares" [PTR 1:5]. On 25 March 1640 "Will[ia]m
Pontus, Thomas Lettice and John Greemes shall repair the herring weir and
draw it and deliver the shares"
