Jonathan was a tanner, boot and shoe maker, and harness maker.
"Many of the farmers in Maine had become discouraged as they had been unable to grow crops during the year of 1816, which is known as the 'year without a summer', and 1817 which was also cold. The five years succeeding 1817 are known as the years of the Ohio fever. During this period a constant stream of immigration flowed from Maine into the 'Buckeye' state." "The journey was made in covered wagons and occupied six weeks. Few who left their Eastern homes expected to look again upon their birthplace, and the separation from friends thus made, was looked upon as the final separation for this world. Friends came from far and near to bid the travelers good-bye and shake their hands for the last time; little thinking that some of those thus leaving their native state, would live to return to it in three days time from the far Ohio. The history of Farmington, Maine, tells of this time and says: 'When Jonathan Hopkinson, a much esteemed citizen, stood by the side of his wagon, whip in hand, saying the last words to his weeping friends, his wife's step-mother, Mrs. Francis Tufts, tried to cheer their hearts by saying 'Well I suppose Hopkinson may as well go to heaven by way of Ohio as any other way', and this was the general feeling that when friends left for the great West, the next meeting with them would be in the other world. Jonathan did go to heaven by way of Ohio, for he is buried in the cemetery at Maineville, Ohio'."
They settled in a small village called Hopkinsonville, which was about five miles from Maineville. Sarah was buried with Jonathan in the Maineville cemetery, in the same lot with her father, Francis Tufts.
Jonathan and Sarah were the parents of six children: John Tufts 1808-1892, Sarah, William, Lydia, Benjamin, and Francis 1816-1883.

JONATHAN HOPKINSON, the second son of Jonathan and Lydia (Smith)
Hopkinson, was born in January, 1779, in Exeter, New Hampshire. We do not
know just when he moved from New Hampshire to Farmington, Maine, but he
was married in Farmington on Dec. 12, l8O5, to Sarah Tufts, who was born
Apr. 12, 1783, the daughter of Francis and Sarah (Blunt) Tufts. (see
Tufts).
The town of Farmington, Maine, was started in 1780, and in 1782 there
were eight families in the town and twelve new settlers came that year.
They soon had a grist mill and a sawmill. In l805 we find that "Hopkinson
and Baker" erected commodius buildings, with a large tan yard, on River
lot, A-46, East side. Mr. Baker soon sold out his interest in the tannery
and removed to Wilton, but Jonathan Hopkinson continued the business with
success, and also engaged in the manufacture of boots and shoes. Jonathan
continued his business in Farmington until lglg when he decided to move
to a newer part of the country and he and Sarah, with their family, went
from Farmington to Maineville, Ohio.
Many of the farmers in Maine had become discouraged as they had been
unable to grow crops during the year of l8l6, which is known as the "year
without a summer", and l8l7 which was also cold. The five years
succeeding l8l7 are known as the years of the Ohio fever. During this
period a constant stream of immigration flowed from Maine into the
"Buckeye" state. Farmington did not lose as many of her citizens as the
neighboring and smaller towns of Phillips and New Sharon. Nevertheless
several of the most enterprising farmers sold their farms and left Maine
to follow the western Star of Empire. The journey was made in covered
wagons and occupied six weeks. Few who left their Eastern homes expected
to look again upon their birthplace, and the separation from friends thus
made, was looked upon as the final separation for this world. Friends

Maineville is located in Warren County, Ohio. This county was formed from
Hamilton County, May 1, l8O3, and named in honor of Gen. Joseph Warren,
who fell at the battle of Bunker Hill. The first permanent settlers in
Maineville came from Maine in l8l5 and Jonathan Hopkinson came just three
years later tc a part of the country which was real frontier. These were
but the forerunners of many other immigrants from that far distant state.
They started churches and other industries came. A cemetery was started,
probably in l8l9, as there is a stone with that date on it. The village
was incorporated in 1850 and a post office was established in l854. The
town was for a long time called "Yankeetown", but the name was afterward
changed to Maineville because so many of its citizens came from Maine.
l850 was also remembered as the "cholera year". Within a radius of two
miles more than fifty persons died; many of the best citizens were
victims.
Some time after Jonathar. and Sarah arrived in Ohio they settled in a
small village called Hopkinsville, which was about five miles from
Maineville. We do not know now long they remained there. The Census of

M20-30 Ebenezer Witham (1805)
F20-30 Susanna Hopkinson (1812)
Ebenezer Witham was a natural-born mechanic, with a special talent for mill machinery, the details of which he seemed to acquire by intuition. He removed to Farmington, Maine in about 1834/5 where he erected a flour mill for himself on an improved plan of his own devising. He afterwards erected other mills in different parts of the state, in several of which he retained an interest, and was supposed to be among the wealthy men of his day. He was a large man of great physical strength, large framework and iron constitution. He had never been known to complain of ill health during his lifetime until he was smitten down with typhoid fever, of which he died in 1840, at the early age of thirty-two years. Like many men of genius, his financial affairs were loosely conducted, and for much of his property held in copartnership he had no writings, and when his estate was settled up, instead of being amply provided for it was found that his widow and eight children were virtually penniless, and thrown entirely upon their own resources.

The United States Biographical Dictionary
Charles Emerson Witham, eldest son of Ebenezer Witham and Susannah nee Hopkinson, was born at New Sharon, Franklin county, Maine on the 21st of October 1830.
The name is of English origin: the family tradition is that three brothers of that cognomen came from England aboutnthe beginning of the seventeenth century and settled in Massachusetts. From one of these brothers our subject claims descent. The towns of Withamville, in Massachusetts and in Clermont county Ohio, derive their names from members of this lineage, by whom they were founded. Colonies of Withams are still in New England, while detachments of them have found their way into Ohio and other western states. The great-grandfather of our subject was a soldier of the revolutionary war, was wounded at Bunker Hill, and died a prisoner of war at Halifax, Nova Scotia, while his grandfather served through the war of 1812. The mother of Dr. Witham was a sister to the late Hon. Thomas Hopkinson, of Cambridge, Massachusetts, ad a descendant of Francis Hopkinson, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. Thomas Hopkinson was a graduate of Harvard University, in the same class with Charles Sumner, and subsequently an eminent lawyer of Boston, and at one time president of the Boston and Worcester Railroad Company. Mrs. Witham was a lady of high literary attainments, having been in early life a teacher; she was, moreover, a devout member of the Baptist church, in which faith she educated her children, impressing upon them all a deep reverence for the Bible and the institutions of Christianity, and to herinfluence is mainly due whatever of sucess in life may have been achieved by her children, all of whom have the livliest memories of her motherly care and holy influence. She died at Mainville, Ohio, in 1867, at the age of sixty-two.
The father of our subject, Ebenezer Witham, was a natural-born mechanic, with a special talent for mill machinery, the details of which he seemed to acquire by intuition. He removed from Farmington, Maine, when our subject was but four years old, where he erected a flour-mill for himself on an improved plan of his own devising. He afterward erected other mills in different parts of the state, in several of which he retained an interest, and was supposed to be among the wealthy men of his day. He was a man of great physical strength, large framework and iron constitution. Had never been known to complain of ill-health during his lifetime until he was smitten down with typhoid fever, of which he died in 1840, at the age of thirty-two years. Like many men of genius, his financial affairs were loosely conducted, and for much of his property held in copartnership he had no writings, and when his estate was settled up, instead of being amply provided for it was found that his widow and eight children were virtually penniless, and thrown entirely upon their own resources.
Charles E. Witham received his juvenile education partly in the public schools, but chiefly at the knee of his excellent mother, and although he was not in early age a bright scholar, yet he possessed an intense desire for an education. His days were usually spent at such manual labor as he could procure, and the proceeds were sacredly devoted to the maintenance of the family, of which he was for many years the chief support, while his nights were devoted to reading. His early years were thus fraught with toil and privation, and void of most of the enjoyments which generally render the season of youth the most happy period of life. Notwithstanding these hardships and difficulties he attained his maturity at the age of sixteen years, when he not only passed as a man, but received the wages of a man, and often extra wages for extra work. Like his father, too, he possessed a pecular mechanical genius, which also brought its reward. He spent the years between sixteen and eighteen in the starch factory of Abiel Abbott, Esq., of Farmington, and was soon made foreman of the works. In 1848 he sold out the little property which the family still owned, and with his mother and seven younger children immigrated to Mainville, Warren county, Ohio, where his mother had some relations. On arriving at their destination their entire capital amounted to two hundred dollars, most of which they invested in a cabin and patch of ground, while Charles E. entered a manufacturing establishment, where he earned fair wages, and by his heroic extertions not only kept the family in food, but comfortably clothed.
About the year 1853 certain circumstances tended to bring the lightning-rod industry into great demand. Our subject was employed as agent by a firm who entered largely into the manufacture of those articles, to make contacts with house-holders and superintend the erection of those on their houses. The enterprise proved profitable, and young Witam soon accumulated capital enough to embark in the business on his own responsbility; success followed, he became all intent on money making, which was then the one aim of his life: a few years and he should be rich and able to devote his time to the acquisition of knowledge. In the midst of these pleasing reveries he was smitten down with Asiatic cholera, and for days his life hung by a thread. Then he remembered that there was something else to live for besides riches; that his Creator and his fellow-men had some claims on him. He learned to sympathaize with suffering, to feel another's woe, and during convalescence he resolved to educate himself for a physician and devote the remainder of his life to the alleviation of human suffering. But on his recovery he was destitute of means, and the way seemed dark and hedged up. He had, however, established a reputation for wisdom and integrity which now stood him in stead of capital. He resolved to make a trip, on his own account, to the southern states, with his enterprise, and in this way endeavor to obtain means to prepare for the profession to which he had resolved to devote his life. Kind friends indorsed him, and his guardian-angel mother encouraged him. He left Ohio in the fall of 1853, traveled over the states of Kentucky, Tennessee, South and North Carolinas, and returned in the spring of 1854, having netted by the trip the handsome sum of two thousand dollars. This loosened his hands. He attended three courses of lectures in the Eclectic Medical Instaitute of Cincinnati, and pursued his studies in the office of Dr. C. H. Cleveland, one of the professors of the institution, and was graduated with honers in the spring of 1856. He subsequently attended another course of lectures at the College of Medicine and Surgery, Cincinnati. He located at Mainville, Ohio, his old house, and immediately entered upon the practice of his profession. He was skillful, enthusiastic, and of course successful.
Soon after the outbreak of the late war Camp Denison was established some twelve mile from his residence. Squadrons of troops had been sent there in advance of surgeons or regimental organizations. Disease broke out in the camp. The doctor volunteered his services, and for weeks, without fee or reward other than the prayers and thanks of sick men and the sweet pleasure derived from benevolence, he doctored, nursed and attended the sick night and day, until he himself smitten down witha contagious disease under which he lingered for months, and in the summer of 1861 was obliged to make a trip to the eastern seaboard and spend the season in recruiting his own health. But his constitution had received a shock past perect restoration.

General Notes: Husband - Nicholas Stillwell
"Nicholas Stillwell, progenitor of most of the families of the name in America, married Abigail Hopton, handmaiden to Elizabeth Queen of Bohemia, and after her death came to America with his two young sons Richard and Nicholas. Nicholas soon made a name for himself in his adopted country and is known in early records as simply 'the tobacco planter'. He was commissioned a Lieutenant in Virginia around 1640 and became one of this countries earliest military heroes."
"He was a famous Indian fighter and in the Virginia uprising of 1644 he had command of a troop of horse and was called the 'Valient Stillwell'. Upon the termination of this war he joined the forces of Claybourne in Maryland, who was in rebellion against the Royalist Gov. Calvert who naturally had the support of the neighboring Royalist, Sir William Berkeley, Gov. of Virginia. The espousal of Claybourne's cause by Nicholas Stillwell made him persona non grata with the two governors, and he found it expedient to move to Manhattan Island about 1645/6. Here he bought a house and lot and settled near the fort, but soon purchased an out-lying plantation at Deutil Baynon foot of 47th street and East River. He soon, however joined the English Colony of Gravesend, but finally moved to Dover, Staten Island, where he d. 28 Dec., 1671. Nicholas Stillwell was a man of great natural force and dominated his fellow citizens. He was one of three officers in command of the troops in the Indian War (Esopus War) in 1663; was sheriff of Long Island under Stuyvesant; magistrate of Gravesend from 1649 to 1663; president of the Court-Martial for the Trial of Freebooters and Pirates in 1654, and following his removal from Gravesend to Staten Island about 1664, he was elected, in 1667, by the inhabitants of the Island, constable, which carried with it power to choose two overseers who, jointly with himself, constituted a court of jurisdiction in cases not exceeding five pounds."

3 F Louisa Tripler
Born: 1871 - Camden, New Jersey Baptized: Died: 1965 Buried:
General Notes: Husband - Jacob Tripler
The 1850 Philadelphia census lists a Jacob Tripler, age 25, a clerk and his wife Elizabeth, age 20 with no children. The 1857 Philadelphia Directory lists Jacob L. Tripler as a provisioner. The LDS International Geneological Index notes that a female child was born on 1 Nov. 1859 to Jacob Tripler of Camden, New Jersey and his wife Louisa. A list of Camden County, N.J. marriages includes Jacob Tripler and Louisa Horner married 2/10/1859. The1860 US census for Camden, NJ lists Jacob, a provision dealer age 37 and Louisa, age 22 and their children Elizabeth, age 6 and Margarite, age 6 months . If these two are the same Jacob Tripler then the birth dates disagree by about two years. Elizabeth may have been his first wife and the mother of the child Elizabeth. Louisa was rather young to be Elizabeth's mother. This speculation is reflected in the family data recorded here. The 1880 US census shows Jacob Tripler, age 53, living in Norristown, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania with his wife Louisa,41 and his children Margaretta C.,19 and Louisa,9. In the same household that year was Jacob's brother in law, Mathias Horner, 26 and his nephew Edwin C. Horner, 4. The 1900 US census has Jacob Tripler, born September 1823 living in Landsdown, Delaware County, Pennsylvania with his wife Louisa, born May 1840 and his daughter Margaretta C., born July 1865.
General Notes: Wife - Louisa Horner
Louisa's family name, Horner, and her wedding date are given in the record of New Jersey marriages. Her birth date is t aken from the 1900 census. This is the "Aunt Lou" known to Susan and Mary Lou Milman whose grandmother was Louisa's nie ce Martha Eyre Tripler. In the 1860 census Louisa is recorded with her husband and her infant daughter, Margarite, in C amden, New Jersey. Also in the household was Jacob's six year old daughter, Elizabeth. Louisa and Jacob were listed i n the 1880 census living in Norristown, Pennsylvania with daughters Margaretta and Louisa both of whom were born in Ne w Jersey. Also in the household were Louisa's Brother Mathias Horner, age 26, and her nephew Edwin C. Horner, age 4. I n the 1900 census Louisa and Jacob are listed in Landsdown, Pennsylvania with their daughter, Margaretta. In the 1920 c ensus Louisa, age 82, is listed as a widow living with her cousin Frank M. Benton and Frank's wife and daughter, Rosa E . and Eva J. in Los Angeles California. Living in the same household is a woman refered to as Frank's second cousin an d named Margaretta C. Tripler. The Los Angeles City Directory for the years 1926 through 1930 list Louisa Tripler ( wid ow of Jacob L.) living with Margaretta C. Tripler at 2348 Langsdale Ave. In the 1930 issue Louisa F. Copeland is liste d as living at the same address.
General Notes: Child - Margarite Tripler
The LDS International Genealogical Index lists the birth of a female child to Jacob and Louisa Tripler in Camden New Je rsey on Nov. 1, 1859. The 1860 census lists the family living in Camden and gives Margarite's age as six months. Marga rite is not in the household for the 1880 census.
General Notes: Child - Margaretta C. Tripler
Margaretta is here assumed to be distinct from Margarite because of the age difference, however Margaretta's actual dat e of birth is very questionable. In the 1880 census her age is stated to be 19 whereas Margarite would have been 20 o r 21. In the census for 1900 her birth date is given as July, 1865 which would make her four years younger than what co uld be calculated from her stated age in 1880. In the 1920 census Margaretta's mother is recorded in Los Angeles Califo rnia living with the family of her "cousin", Frank Benton, and another woman named Margaretta C. Tripler who was only 4 7 years of age. The family's whereabouts in 1870 and1910 has not yet been determined. From 1926 through 1930 a Margaret ta C. Tripler is listed in the Los Angeles City Directory as living With Louisa Tripler at 2348 Langsdale Ave.
General Notes: Child - Louisa Tripler
Louisa is listed with her sister Margaretta and her parents in the 1880 census. The family was living at Norristown i n Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. Her date of birth as listed here was estimated from her stated age, 9, in that censu s. In the census for 1900 Louisa was not listed with the family. She is believed to have married a man named Copeland w ho has not otherwise been identified. She has not been located under the name Louisa Tripler nor the name Louisa Copel and in either the 1900 or the 1910 census for Pennsylvania, Colorado or California. She is also not listed in the 192 0 census for California although her mother and sister, Margaretta are. Margaretta and Louisa's mother are also liste d in the Los Angeles City Directory for the years 1926 through 1930 and perhaps earlier as well and Louisa is listed wi th the surname Copeland first in the 1930 issue. At that time she was living at the same address as her mother and sist er, 2348 Langsdale Ave. Susan Milman has records indicating that Louisa died in 1965.
