Letters from Charlotte to her sister Merilla Lett:
Iowa Centre December 17th, 1855
Dear Sister and Brother
We received your letter the 16 and was glad to hear from you and the rest. You wrote you had wrote three letters. Merilla, I have only received one before this. I have sent as many as one dozen letters since I left. Lois has wrote more than all the rest. I don't remember how many I have received from her. We are all well at present. All the complaints we have hear is crossness and it is a very easy thing to get along with. Our house is very small. Only one room and that bout as large as your kitchen and three beds in that with all the rest and eight of us all the time so you may think about how I get along but I live in hope that I shall have more room in the corse of another year if we live. But I don't know if I can stand it until that time at this poor rate. Every thing is so unhandy hear now that it makes it harder than it would be. But Merilla you said you did not know but Thomas would be our neighbors now Merilla I will tell you what I think about that. Every one that has a home there had better stay for they have lived through the hardest of it and got so they can live now and take some comfort. And now to come out here they have the same to go through with again and buy the time they get as well off as they was when they left Illinois they would not want a home but any one that has not got a home. I think this is the place for them if anyone is able to buy a farm second hand they can do first rate. Merilla you wanted mo to explain to you what I meant. Now I will tell you. I found a little chap that wanted a great deal worse than I did and so I gave them to him now I have explain it, Merilla. I like this country first rate but it is very lonesome for me to live away from all friend and deprived of all priviledg what ever. But I hope I shall see better time before I die but I don’t know if I shall.
Now I will write a few lines about business matters. I want Thomas to send the money if he has received the money from Mr. Hughs on then receipt I sent back. Father wrote to me and said Mr Hughs told him that if I would send them so they would get there in time I would get the money back I paid out. I thought if he had the good luck to get it I should like it if not I want you should write and let me know whither Thomas received it or not. If he did Thomas may send it the money Thomas receive don the day opf the sale. I want him to keep that ntil I send hij the word what to do with it. There is no land I can get here for the children and ny the time the money is due there will be no chance for them here. I think now when the rest of the money is due I will put it all together and see wht it will do. Write ands let me know what you think about it. I have wrote to Lois and David to see that they think of coming out here and if they come out they will let me know and then I can tell you about sending the money but remember not to brake into that 1,400 hundred and 28 dollars that I want keep in one body by it self. I want that I to go and come on when the rail road gets to Newton than I shall make my first on rail road for home and then I shall take the world easy for I have ben through the mill once and by the time I go through it the second time I think I ought to take things easy but enough if this. I feal sometimes as though I had not a friend in this world for I have not seen or spoke to a woman in three months. We have neighbors but I have no time to go. No one to do anything but myself. We have no school for the children to go to. Thare is no school within three miles of us and that is too far to send so I think I shall have to send to Illinois if they ever get any schooling. Merilla I must stop for my pen is not a cent that you can give me. Give my respects to all.
This is from your sister, Charlotte, Phillips, Merilla, Lett
Answer this as soon as you can and let me know all about things that concerns me. Merilla I only want one hundred dollars sent to me. The rest I want to keep out at interest. I want Thomas to do the best he can with it. Merilla I expect you wil think this all sorts of a letter but I feel just so I get the gout every little while and it was on me when I wrote this letter but it began to ware off but you must excuse it you must consider where it come from like the man when the jackass kick him. I have wrote foolry enough.
John M Blanchard left us Saturday the 15 for home and what I have not wrote he can tell.

Helped found the town of Leland, IL.
The History of Leland, LaSalle County, Illinois
Contributed by Charles Brummel
Charles writes: "The following is from the EARLVILLE LEADER, 13 June 1902. It is in a section called THE LELAND NEWS, Leland, Ill., June 13, 1902. Henry and Christopher Feuerborn were my great-great-great uncles. Both moved on to Scipio, Anderson County, KS. In 1875 Henry was thrown from a hay wagon and killed. Christopher at some point moved on to Nevada where he was killed by Indians."
Early Leland History
The following interesting historical sketch was furnished by a former resident and published in the Leland Times some weeks ago, from which source it is reproduced here.
According to the accounts which we have been able to find Leland was originally planned by Christopher Fuerborn (sic). Mr. Fuerborn was one of the first men who located in the northern part of LaSalle County. He came from the east in 1837, driving overland by way of Fort Dearborn. Shortly after arriving he conceived the plan of making Leland a central point for a market for southern DeKalb and northern LaSalle counties.
The Chicago Burlington and Quincy route had not yet been laid out. Produce had to be hauled to Chicago for a great many years. Many farmers living in the present time can remember when they hauled dead hogs and bags of wheat in their wagons to the present great city. The old route used to be by way of Naperville, a town about midway between Leland and Chicago. This town was the first night's stopping place, the next day taking them to the city, which was then a few houses clustered around Fort Dearborn. After a while the Illinois and Michigan canal was dug. This afforded a means of communication and transport. Grain was hauled to Ottawa and shipped from there eastward.
There seemed then no prospect of a railroad ever being constructed through this section. Perhaps some men told Mr. Fuerborn that such would be the case, and his idea was that a fine farming territory like this should have a central point for a market. However this may be, he conceived the idea, and laid his plans before his brother Henry, who also owned a farm on the north side of the railroad track. Two other gentlemen, Alonzo and Lorenzo Whitmore, also owned farms adjoining the Feurborns, and they readily fell in with the plan.
Accordingly one fine morning these four pioneers began laying out the town. They had no other way of measuring the town than by the old fashioned method of pacing it off, or with a clothes line and a ten-foot pole, adopting the "six, eight and ten" rule. The town as surveyed by them, as we find it afterwards recorded in the town books, and adopted by an ordinance, approved March 19, 1865, was as follows: "The corporation was to include a square mile, made up of the south half of the south half of section 5, the north half of section 8, and the north half of the south half of section 8." A diagram of the town we also find, drawn in nice shape by J. Ivor Montgomery.
After this much of the business was done, the next important particular was the name. This was in 1839 or '40 as near as we learn from subsequent chronicles. The scene can be imagined of the four men standing out upon the grassy prairies on a summer morning with four little cabins appearing on the prairies. We can imagine of the four men deliberating on the future town and disputing on the name that it should be known by. Many names were proposed, but the name Whitfield suggested a name for the town and accordingly it was named Whitfield; many of the farmers were settled around here, and here and there little houses could be seen standing out upon the prairie land.
A few people soon began to settle on the designated spot. Abram Skinner (the grandfather of a young man in town at one time of that name,) built and opened the first store. Other business houses were erected afterwards. We can imagine the evening scenes in these primitive business houses. The genial proprietor standing behind the counter talking and smiling to his customers in the most patronizing manner; while sunburned farmers, told their stories, lit their pipes, and advised their oldest boys not to smoke. Busy housewives traded the butter and eggs for tea and sugar, and perhaps it might have been (sic) as Goldsmith says: “The village statesman talked with looks profound while news much older than their ale went round”.
INCORPORATION
The village having now been planned out and the first institutions founded, it now remained to incorporate the village, but before we proceed to this matter it may not be amiss to relate a few other particulars. The first school was taught by Miss Nancy Gould (now Mrs. Harry Merwin) in the winter of 1854-5, over Mr. Whitmore's store. A few years afterwards E. M. Kinnie and few others managed to borrow enough money to build a schoolhouse, and thus the educational matter was settled. In 1853 the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy railroad was laid, and the company named the little village Waverly.
This occasioned a little difficulty because there was another post office by the same name in Morgan County. Then to have the station named Waverly and the post office Whitfield would be ridiculous. Things went on this way for a few years when a new name was suggested. John Leland Adams was the first postmaster at Waverly, and some one suggested that the town be called Adams. This name was rejected by the post office department. Not to be balked out of a name the people took Mr. Adams' middle name and called the post office Leland - a name which it bears to this day. We have not been able to learn the date of this occurrence. As for the incorporation, it is called Leland, but we cannot find any place in the corporation records where they have changed the name Whitmore and adopted that of Leland. This is quite a conglomeration of names, the name Leland answers every purpose.
The town of Whitfield was organized, as the records inform us, on the 29th of November, 1859. The meeting was held in the school house, according to notices posted ten days previously as prescribed by statute. At this meeting J. J. Millay presided, and Dr. Hinkley acted as scribe. The vote for corporation was 37, and 18 against. This vote shows that the village was well settled by that time.
At the second meeting held December 8, five trustees were elected - E. T. Satter, D. Hinkley, A. Satter, A. Klove and J. J. Millay. This board we may suppose, were instructed in regard to the course they should pursue as to the government of the town; they were to hold monthly meetings, and were to have the power to grant or withhold licenses to sell intoxicating liquors in the corporation. J. J. Millay was chosen chairman of the board.
The first license was granted to James Mackin for one year. The board required $50 per year, payable quarterly in advance and from that time (1860) to 1878, licenses were granted by the trustees. The board commenced business by enacting the following law: For to notify all business men of said town to provide and set out on their premises hitching posts sufficient to so accommodate (sic) the public at large and if any fail to comply with this requirement, at the next meeting a tax will be levied on such persons to pay expenses for doing the same.
N. J. Whitney was appointed police constable April 24, 1860. This was the first office of the kind ever held in Leland. At the same time the office of pound master was created and James Mackin was the officeholder. A short time after $40 was levied as a tax on the people for the purpose of building a pound and a notice was ordered to be posted up at the same time to the effect that all cattle running at large from sunset until the rising of the same, should be taken up and impounded.
History of Leland
Contributed by Charles Brummel
Charles writes: "This is a letter appearing in the EARLVILLE GAZETTE on 5 February 1869. It is headed: History of Leland. The end of the letter promises another letter, which I do not have."
The oldest settler was a man by the name of Bartholomew, residing on the banks of the Little Indian. In June, 1846, I visited the place together with Wm. Munson and J. Roberts, Esq.; it was then a vast garden of flowers as far as the eye could reach.
In 1847, Abram Skinner settled west of the Grove; he was from Pennsylvania.
South of the Grove resided M S. Pierce, from Mass, -- second cousin to Ex. President Pierce -- the wealthiest man in the township; he arose from mere poverty by hard labor, economy, and sterling honesty to his present respectable and honorable position.
In 1853 the railroad was built thru the place.
The first store was built by A. Skinner, who also built a tavern.
Darnell & Whitmore afterwards went into trade, but soon after went to Kansas.
The town plat was owned by the Fireburns, and afterwards by Mallory; it remained in status quo until 1862. The Rev. Frank Dale then purchased their entire interest, and being one of those men who live not for themselves, but for the good of others, by his liberal course induced capitalists to invest.
Watson & Ball, with a large capital, and Thompson & Klove, with others, gave an impetus to the business of the town. Dale purchasing the produce of the farmer, frequently paying more than he received in Chicago, made it a grain point second only to your town. Earl must ever hear the pain when such men as Signor control the market.
You may consider this as a presage, in my next I will give you more of the details.
Respectfully,
D. HINKLEY

General Notes: Husband - Edward Sawyer
Although he is probably the son of John and the father of James, neither of these relationships has yet been positively proven.
Following is from "The Sawyer Family of Elliotsville (Piscataquis Co., Maine), Descendants of James Sawyer of Gloucester, Mass. and Their Kinfolk, The Drakes" 3rd ed, revised 1978-79, by Fred E. Sawyer (p.iv):
. "It seems difficult to determine with any degree of certainty the orign and relationship of the various immigrant ancestors of the SAWYERS in America. There seems to have been a legend that three SAWYER brothers, Thomas, Edward, and William, migrated from Lincolnshire, England, came on a ship with Capt. Parker, and settled in Mass. about 1636. MAINE GENEALOGY VOL.: page 1444, gives the foIlowing information on the orgin of the SAWYER family: "The ancestors of the SAWYERS, JOHN SAWYER, was a farmer in Lincolnshire, England, where he is supposed to have been a landholder also. He was the father of three sons: William, Edward, and Thomas, who left England on a ship commanded by Capt. Parker, and settled in Massachusetts about 1636. Edward, son of John SAWYER, brought over with him from England his wife, whose name was MARY PEASLEY, and their children, Mary, Henry, and James, and settled first in Ipswich and then in Rowley, Mass. No more is known of Edward or his wife." . . .
. In any case EDWARD SAWYER OF ROWLEY is, thru his son John, the immigrant ancestor of most of the family of SAWYER'S of Rowley. In summary EDWARD SAWYER'S family is as follows:
. EDWARD SAWYER of ROWLEY, b. 1608, Lincolnshire, Eng., possibly the son of JOHN SAWYER who married in England., Mary PEASELEY, b. abt 1610, of Lincolnshire Co. Eng. dau. Joseph PEASELEY. Will proved 31 Mar 1674. Children include: Surname SAWYER:
. (i) Mary b. Eng. before 1636, m. 7 Nov 1648, William MITCHELL;
. (ii) Henry, b. Eng. before 1636, m. Mary PEASLEY;
. (iii) James b. before 1636, Eng., (it is this James that some authors identify as James SAWYER of Gloucester, who d. 31 May 1703 - however in the will of Edward proved 31 Mar 1674 he list only oldest son John and son Ezekiel); [it would be this James who is our ancestor.]
. (iv) Samuel b. abt 1637, Prob. Ipswich, Mass.,
. (v) Sarah, b. 19 Dec 1645, Rowley, bur 12 Feb 1646;
. (vi) John, b. 17 Sep 1647, Rowley, d. 1647/8
. (vii) John, b. 4 Aug 1648, Rowley, m. Mary PARRAT, d. 7 Apr 1722;
. (viii) Ezekiel, b. abt 1650, of Rowley, d. 18 Sep 1675.
. Reference: Mass. Genealogy, History & V.R. Rowley, Mass., and others."
It is curious that Fred E. Sawyer included the above entry, which casts serious doubts that Edward was the father of James, in his 1978-79 work, yet wrote the following entry for his 1983 work. The later work seems to accept the filiation, but with no further explanation. It should also be noted that the entry for James in his 1983 work reads "Parentage un-proven, possibly s. Edward. . ."
From the "General Index of the Sawyer Families of New England Prior to 1900", by Fred E Sawyer, 1983:
. "Edward, b.1608, of Rowley, Lincolnshire, Eng., son of John, brought over with him from England his wife Mary and ch. Mary, Henry, and James, and settled first at Ipswich and than [sic.] at Rawley, Ma. Edward bur. 9 Mar 1673, Rowley, Ma. His wife Mary Peasley b. ca. 1610, Eng. dau Joseph Peasley as indicated in his will 1660."
. Mr. Sawyer continues on to list all of Edward's and Mary's children. The list is identical to the one cited above from his earlier work with two exceptions:
. He has deleted the qualifying remarks from James and identified 2 wives so that it reads:
. (3) James, b. bef. 1636, d. 31 May 1703, m. (1) Martha, m. (2) Sarah Bray.
. He also added the comment to the youngest son, Ezekiel, that he was "killed at Bloody Brook, 18 Sep 1675."

General Notes: Child - James Sawyer
QUOTED DIRECTLY FROM SAWYER FAMILIES OF NEW ENGLAND 1636-1900, BY ELEANOR GRACE SAWYER, PUBLI SHED BY PENOBSCOT PRESS OF CAMDEN, MAINE, 1995: JAMES SAWER (later Sawyer) of Gloucester, Massachusetts, is the ancestor of many Sawyers living in northern New England today. There are several theories concerning his lineage, none o f them proven. One suggestion is that James was one of these three children who are said to h ave come to the New World with Edward. It is true that the latter's will, recorded on 31 Marc h 1674, mentions only his sons, John and Ezekiel, (Part 1) and his "wife", but it was not unu sual at that time for a father to give some of his children money or land during his lifetime , andthen to limit their inheritance or even omit them from his will altogether on the basi s of their having already received their due share of his estate. William seems to have don e this. Furthermore, although James did not name a son Edward, he had a grandson of that nam e who called one of his owns sons Ezekiel. It is also true that James's first child, a daught er, named Mary, as were the first wife and daughter of Edward. Would it not have been natura l for James toname his first daughter after his own mother and sister? Finally, in 1669, before moving to Gloucester, James bought a home in Ipswich, where both Edward and Thomas live d before they moved to Rowley. Taking all this into consideration, I feel it possible that Edward and James may have been fa ther and son, even though thiere is no provable link between them. What is certain, is that J ames married a Martha, of whom little is known except that she and he "acknowledged" a mortga ge in April 1670 for the house he bought in Ipswich. There is alsorecord of a life-support a greement with Thomas and Joannah Smith of Ipswich, entered into by James though later unfulfi lled; since such agreements usually involved family members, it is conceivable that the Smith 's were Martha's family. By the time James moved to Gloucester, he was married to Sarah Bray, a daughter of Thomas an d Mary (Wilson) Bray of Gloucester, who was born in 1651 anddied on 24 April 1727. In 1688 h e received a grant of six acres of land on the west side of the Annasquam River and lived the re. He was a weaver, a selectman in 1696, and died on 31 May 1703, six days after signing hi s will. His widow was living with their son, Abraham, in the family home in 1726.

FTM CD VOL#31, Tree 606-source for info on Samuel and desc.
CD Vol#31 has Hira m who m. Mehitabel Watson & family here and I have
moved to Son of Wm & Eunic e Kenney due to census info and family history
by Gladys Fuller and research by Mark Kulow.
According to research notes by Dr. Elmer E. Peavey desc of Jose ph and
Susan Kendall (Samuel line), Hiram had 2 sons and 1 daughter, Fred,
Eugene and Maria. It doesn't say who his wife was. It appears that
someone has edited these notes, possibly George & Joyce Peavey.

Bertha Kirk and others have Hiram's family as I have listed under Joseph
L. P eavey's (b. 1793 in Brentwood NH, son of Samuel b. 1757c) son, Hiram
b. 1827 (who married Mehitabel Watson). Currently researching -I've seen
research st ating it both ways, but I don't have any vital record abstract
from researche rs to date. Census 1860: Edenburg, Penobscot Co., ME Page859: Hiram (32) is listed with his wife Mary Jane (33) and their childrenMaria A. (6) and John F. (5). He is a blacksmith.
Census 1880: Veazie, Penobscot Co., ME Page 75 B: Hiram (58) is listedwith his wife Mary J. (53) and no children. He is a millwright.

According to "The History of Penobscot Co.", Hiram was living inPassadumkaeg shortly after 1850 when he and several others took out acharter to navigate the Passadumkaeg River by steam. Nothing came of thischarter but "In 1862 Hiram Peavey built a mill and commenced sawinglumber. The power was steam, and had it been favorably located it wouldhave been a good investment, but it was too far from market, and thelocal business was insufficient to support it. It was shortly afterwardsburned, but Mr. Peavey was a man not easily daunted, and he at oncerebuilt it. He commenced operations again but failed to make money. Itcost too much to get lumber to Bangor. He afterwards disposed of it toWinterport parties, but it never did a paying business until the railroadreached the town."
According to the Census Records Hiram later moved to Venzia which wasdown river from Passadumkaeg and very close to Bangor. He worked as amillwright which was in line with his work at the sawmill.
Hiram's son John F. (Fred?) Peavey is buried in the same Mt. Hopecemetery plot as Joseph L. and Susan. This makes the connection prettysolid.

He sold 25 acres of land in Berwick to Hatevil Colson, December 21, 1750. Hatevil Colson was married to Elizabeth Downs, a sister of Mary Downs (Wife of John Grindle).
From the "Provincial Papers of New Hampshire" (Bouton): Joseph Peavey was granted 10 bills of credit of the province of New Hamsphire for the same amount as was burned in his chest with the other money at his lodgings in Berwick. These bills of credit were like bonds and therefore could be replaced without affecting the actual cash behind them. May 20, 1727, Joseph Peavey was one of the grantees named in the charter of the town of Bow by Gov. John Wentworth. This amounted to a fairly large tract of land and Joseph's name was mentioned many times in the transfer of property in Bow within the description of the property, his name being used as the person who originally owned a certain piece of land.

The ESSEX ANTIQUARIAN
Edited by Sidney Perley and George Francis Dow, The Essex Antiquarian
The Essex Antiquarian was published from 1897 to 1909 by Sidney Perley and George Francis Dow, both noted Essex County Genealogists and Historians. The purpose and accomplishments of the Antiquarian are best described in the words of Perley and Dow, as published in the final edition Vol. 13, No. 4, October 1909:
"The Essex Antiquarian was purposed to fill a want. It was designed to be a leader in scientific historical research; and to present copies or abstracts of records and compilations in an exhaustive and systematic manner, so that as far as the publication extended further investigation along those lines would be needless. Repeated examinations of records tend to their destruction, and thousands of dollars have been spent locally upon the same records for the same purpose by various persons who were ignorant of costly examinations made by others. This purpose, if prosecuted, would preserve the records and make further expenditure of money and labor unnecessary. This has been the particular reason of the appearance of the genealogies in alphabetical order, the gravestone inscriptions, abstracts of the Salem and Ipswich quarterly court records and files, old Norfolk county records, all wills in the order of their probate, Essex Gazette notes, abstracts of titles to land, etc., as shown in Salem, Haverhill, Ipswich and Marblehead in 1700, and in Georgetown and Topsfield in 1800. During the thirteen years of its existence there have been published in The Essex Antiquarian genealogies of all families from Abbe to Brown; all gravestone inscriptions dated prior to the year 1800 in Amesbury, Andover, Beverly, Boxford, Bradford, Danvers, Essex, Georgetown, Gloucester, Groveland, Hamilton, Haverhill and Ipswich; all wills proved in the county prior to June, 1666; the record of the Essex County Revolutionary soldiers and sailors alphabetically to Brown; abstracts of the old Norfolk records to 1675; Salem and Ipswich quarterly court records and files to 1659; and abstracts of all records in the first ten volumes of the Suffolk county registry of deeds relating to Essex county persons and property, where parties resided or property was located in Essex county, covering the period prior to 1678." Pioneers of Massachusetts
Charles Henry Pope, Pioneers of Massachusetts
1900 (Republished Bowie, MD: Heritage Books, 1991)
This descriptive list of pioneers of Massachusetts was taken from colonial, town, church and other contemporary documents. It lists over 5000 persons who settled the colony and were instrumental in its growth. Including settlers from as far back as the Mayflower, researchers will find birth, occupation, marriage and death information along with a list of known descendants. For those seeking ancestors from the colonies of Massachusetts and Plymouth, this can be a helpful source of information. The total number of ,'Pioneers" on record is about 6,000. Of these the occupations of only 1,725 were mentioned; 323 being called tillers of the soil, (including both wealthy landholders and humble plowmen,) 210 house and ship carpenters, 115 tailors, 103 merchants, 91 ministers, 81 shoemakerS, 75 sea-captains, 62 weavers, and so on. We have further some 471 cases in which the records specify the settlers, p. 443.
