General Notes: Husband - John Scribner Sr.
John and his siblings grew up during the time of one of the most costly struggles the early Colonies ever faced, King Philip's War (1675-1676). Native American Indian tribes had formed a confederation under the leadership of King Philip (also known as Pometacon), chief of the Wapanoags. During this war, one-half of the towns in New England were attacked, and 12 of those towns were completely destroyed. The Colonists banded together and organized a common army (the very earliest predecessor of the U.S. Army) to defend against the Indian attacks. In that force were 527 men from Massachusetts, 315 from Connecticut, and 158 from Plymouth Colony. One of every 16 men was killed, making this the most costly war, percentage-wise, ever fought on American soil.
John Scribner was a blacksmith. He and his family moved from Dover to Exeter in the early months of 1698, after selling the Dover holdings inherited from his father.
Information about the Scribners who lived in Exeter is sketchy and incomplete, owing to the fact that the Exeter Town Hall burned in 1870, destroying most of the Vital Records of the town. What few records remain are bound in a single volume, which is kept at the Exeter Town Office.
In 1698 John received 60 acres of land from the Town of Exeter. Also that year of 1698, he united with the newly-formed Congregational Church at Exeter. He is listed among those who, according to Hampton Church Records, on 11 September 1698, were dismissed from that church "in order to their being incorporated into a church state, in Exeter." Another record lists John as an original member of the Exeter Church. According to that record, Exeter's newly-called Pastor, Rev. John Clark, was to be ordained 21 September 1698. "On the Sunday preceding the ordination a confession of faith and covenant, which had been previously agreed upon, were signed by the following named persons, who were the first members of the first church in Exeter, the organization of which has ever since been maintained" (MEN AND THINGS OF EXETER, SKETCHES FROM THE HISTORY OF AN OLD NEW HAMPSHIRE TOWN [Exeter: The News-Letter Press, 1871], 57).
In 1709, John purchased land in Exeter from the estate of John Glidden, and land in Kingston from William Long. In 1723, he and seven others (including his son, John, Jr.) purchased land in Exeter from Clement Moody, Jr., which land the seven buyers divided between themselves in 1725 (SCRIBNER NOTES [op. cit.], 5). Then, in 1725, he received another 50 acres of land from the Town (Bell, HISTORY OF EXETER [op. cit.], 141-143). At the same time (12 April 1725), his sons John, Jr., Joseph, Edward and Samuel received grants of land from the Town. As a result of these land purchases, John owned about 200 acres in Kingston, and another large holding of land (which, in his will, he called "My Swamp or Meadow Ground Laying upon the South Side of Exeter River").
We learn the names of John and Elizabeth's children (at least, those who were living on 2 March 1735/36) from John's will. In the will he speaks of sons John, Edward, Samuel and Joseph (whom he named as Executor, leading us to suspect that Joseph was the oldest), and daughters Elizabeth Moody, Mary Gadon [Gordon], Abigail Young, Susanna Mudget and Sarah Moody.
John and his son John Jr. are mentioned as part-purchasers of King's Falls Saw Mill in Exeter on 7 August 1723, along with Nathaniel Glidden, Henry Wadleigh, Daniel Ladd and others (N. H. Provincial Deeds, 14:179, quoted by G. W. Chamberlain in his book, THE DESCENDANTS OF CHARLES GLIDDEN OF PORTSMOUTH AND EXETER, NEW HAMPSHIRE [op. cit.], 77).
Of much interest is the fact that John and his siblings chose to change their name from Scriven to Scribner. While we have no recorded explanation of this name-change, we might advance some possible reasons, as follows:
One possibility is that, by continuing to be known as Scrivens, they would forever be linked to the legacy of the disgraced King Charles I, to whom their grandfather, Thomas, had given his loyalty and for whom he had given his life. Add to this the hatred they must have felt toward King Charles' son, Charles II, who was ruler of England when their brother, Edward, was taken from them and impressed into the English Navy, never to be heard from again.
Another possibility is that they did not want to be mistaken for the family of the Rev. William Scriven (1629-1713). Rev. Scriven (of no relation to John, that we know about) was a well-known Baptist minister in New England, especially Boston and Kittery, Maine. The prominent (indeed, state-sponsored) form of religion was Congregationalism, of which John and family were adherents. Therefore, Rev. Scriven and his followers left New England and moved to South Carolina, where they exercised an incredible formative influence upon Southern Baptists (Noyes, GENEALOGICAL DICTIONARY OF MAINE AND NEW HAMPSHIRE [op.cit.], 615).
Yet another possibility is that they strongly felt the need to establish a new identity in this new land of Colonial America.
General Notes: Wife - Elizabeth Cloyes
ELIZABETH'S PARENTS:
Her father, John, was born 26 August 1638 in Watertown, Massachusetts, the son of John and Abigail Cloyes (WATERTOWN RECORDS, 1 [Watertown, MA: The Historical Society of Watertown, 1984] 6). He was still a youngster when the family moved to Falmouth (Portland), Maine (William Willis, THE HISTORY OF PORTLAND FROM 1632 TO 1864 [Portland: Bailey & Noyes, 1865], 140). Other interesting information about the Cloyes family in Portland is found on page 173-174 of Willis' book. After a few years there, they then moved on to Charlestown, Massachusetts.
John Cloyes married (1) Mary Long in 1664 in Charlestown (Savage, A GENEALOGICAL DICTIONARY OF THE FIRST SETTLERS OF NEW ENGLAND, 1 [op.cit.], 412). She was born 24 February 1646/47 in Newbury, Massachusetts, the daughter of Deacon Robert and Alice (Stevens) Long (VITAL RECORDS OF NEWBURY, MASSACHUSETTS, 1 [op.cit.], 286; Savage, 3 [op.cit.], 109); Torrey, NEW ENGLAND MARRIAGES PRIOR TO 1700 [op.cit.], 471).
In 1681, John (then living in Wells, Maine, and apparently divorced from Mary Long) married his second wife, Mary Mills of Saco, Maine. She was born abt. 1652 in Wells, the daughter of Thomas and Mary (Wadleigh) Mills (Noyes, GENEALOGICAL DICTIONARY OF MAINE AND NEW HAMPSHIRE [op.cit.], 152, 483; Torrey [op.cit.], 163, 511). That same year, Thomas Mills deeded land to both John and his brother, Nathaniel (who had married Mary's sister, Sarah), referring to each one as his "beloved sonn in law" (YORK DEEDS, Book III [Portland, ME: John T. Hall and B. Thurston & Co., 1888], Folio 105).
It seems that Mary (Long) Cloyes married her second husband, Jonathan Griffin of Newbury, Massachusetts, 25 October 1676 (VITAL RECORDS OF SUDBURY, MASSACHUSETTS, TO 1850 [Boston: New England Historic Genealogical Society, 1903], 231).
John Cloyes was a ship's captain, sailing up and down the Maine, New Hampshire and Massachusetts coats, carrying cargo and passengers.
General Notes: Child - Joseph Scribner
Lydia outlived Joseph, because she is recorded as renouncing administration of his estate as well as that of their son, Joseph, Jr., who had died in 1756 (PROBATE RECORDS OF THE PROVINCE OF NEW HAMPSHIRE, 6, 1757-1760 [op. cit.],169).
Joseph was a yeoman (farmer). He was granted 30 acres of land in Exeter in 1725. He served as a soldier for part of 1755.
General Notes: Child - John Scribner Jr.
John was a blacksmith, as was his father. In 1725, he received 50 acres of land in Exeter. At one time, he was a scout in Capt. Gilman's regiment, fighting the Indians.
General Notes: Child - Edward Scribner
Edward was a blacksmith and a "man of sterling qualities." As did his brothers and many of the men of Exeter in those early Colonial days, Edward fought Indians as a soldier serving under Capt. Gilman. He was granted 30 acres of land in Exeter in 1725.

Samuel was granted 40 acres of land in Exeter in 1725. He was the ancestor of the Scribners who lived in Raymond, Rockingham, NH. Samuel was accidentally shot to death while hunting in the woods near Exeter.
General Notes: Child - Elizabeth Scribner
CLEMENT'S PARENTS: Clement, Sr. was born before 1672 (possibly 1661) in Wenham, Essex County, Massachusetts (Anderson, 223), and died 21 April 1729 in Exeter (Metcalf, PROBATE RECORDS OF THE PROVINCE OF NEW HAMPSHIRE, 2 [op. cit.], 362). Sarah was born 14 December 1668 in Wenham, and died in Exeter about 1711, sometime following the birth of their seventh child, David, who was born about 1710 (Marlene A. Hickley [comp.], DESCENDANTS OF JOHN CLARKE OF WENHAM, MASSACHUSETTS AND EXETER, NEW HAMPSHIRE [Bath, ME: The author, 1968], 2, 3). Clement and Sarah were married before 1693 in Exeter (Anderson, 223). They were also the parents of Josiah Moody, who married Elizabeth's sister, Sarah (see their article below, 9). Following Sarah's death, Clement re-married, taking for his second wife a lady named Alice, who outlived him.
General Notes: Child - Mary Scribner
Thomas was a member of the first Board of Selectmen of Brentwood. About 1757, he married (2nd) Deliverance Eastman, who died 12 July 1791 (KINGSTON EARLY FAMILIES [op. cit.], 95).
THOMAS' PARENTS: Thomas, Sr. was born in 1678 in Exeter. He died in Exeter in 1761. Elizabeth was born in Haverhill 20 November 1675. She died in Brentwood in 1720. They were married 22 November 1699 in Haverhill (Richard D. Longo (Contributor), "Gordon, Longo, Scholz of NH, Italy," Family Archive #1211, World Family Tree Volume #14 [Broderbund Software, 1997], "CD-ROM"; HAVERHILL VRs, 2 [op. cit.], 138, 172).
General Notes: Child - Susannah Scribner
John served in the Revolutionary War, and was a proprietor (an original owner of town land) of Gilmanton, Belknap, NH (THOMAS MUDGETT OF SALISBURY [op. cit.],53).
Nicholas was a farmer. Susannah was his second wife, since he had been married first to Judith Gilman (Noyes, GENEALOGICAL DICTIONARY OF MAINE AND NEW HAMPSHIRE [op. cit.], 615). We learn the names of their children from Nicholas' will.
His sister, Patience, married Joseph Eastman, a son of Susannah's uncle and aunt, Samuel and Elizabeth (Scribner) Eastman.
After Nicholas died, Susannah married a man named Thurston about 1763. We learn this from the fact that, in the account of Nicholas' will, when the estate was settled and allowed on 26 October 1763, Susannah is referred to as "Susanna Thurston, formerly widow of the deceased, executrix" (Hammond, PROBATE RECORDS OF THE PROVINCE OF NEW HAMPSHIRE, 4 [op. cit.], 503).
General Notes: Child - Sarah Scribner
We don't know when Josiah died, but he was living in Brentwood in 1753. In the property transfers involving Josiah, he is variously called a yeoman (farmer), laborer and innkeeper. We have no record of Josiah and Sarah after 1753 (Anderson, "Moody Sons and Grandsons" [ op. cit.], 230).

General Notes: Husband - John Cloyes
John was the son of John and Abigail Cloyes of Watertown, Massachusetts. (WATERTOWN RECORDS, 1 [op.cit.], 6). When he was young, the family moved to Falmouth (Portland) Maine (William Willis, THE HISTORY OF PORTLAND FROM 1632 TO 1864 [Portland: Bailey & Noyes, 1865], 140. Other interesting information about the Cloyes family in Portland is found on pages 173-174 of Willis' book). After a few years, they moved to Charlestown, Massachusetts.
Mary Long (John's first wife and the mother of Elizabeth) was the daughter of Deacon Robert and Alice (Stevens, or Short) Long of Newbury (Savage, A GENEALOGICAL DICTIONARY OF THE FIRST SETTLERS OF NEW ENGLAND, 3 [op.cit.], 109. See also Torrey, NEW ENGLAND MARRIAGES PRIOR TO 1700 [op.cit.], 471).
In 1681, John (then living in Wells, Maine, and apparently divorced from Mary Long), married his second wife, Mary Mills of Saco, Maine, who was the daughter of Thomas and Mary (Wadleigh) Mills (Noyes, GENEALOGICAL DICTIONARY OF MAINE AND NEW HAMPSHIRE [op.cit.], 152, 483. See also Torrey, 163). That same year, Thomas Mills deeded land to both John and his brother, Nathaniel (who had married Mary's sister, Sarah), referring to each one as his "beloved sonn in law" (YORK DEEDS, Book III [Portland: John T. Hull and B. Thurston & Co., 1888], Folio 105).
It seems that Mary (Long) Cloyes married her second husband, Jonathan Griffin of Newbury, Massachusetts, 25 October 1676 (VITAL RECORDS OF SUDBURY, MASSACHUSETTS TO 1850 [Boston: New England Historic Genealogical Society, 1903], 231).
John Cloyes was a ship's captain, sailing up and down the Maine, New Hampshire and Massachusetts coasts, carrying cargo and passengers.

General Notes: Husband - Edward Peve
According to Mark Kulow's file, Edward Peve's middle name was Thomas andhis parents were Thomas Peavey/Peve, b. c. 1645 and Martha Eaton, b. c.1645, both from England. He was taxed in 1691 and was living as a tenanton the Hall farm with Richard Blanchard in 1693. Another record indicatesThomas Peavey and Richard Blanchard on the Hall farm. Also Mark assertsthat Rachel's maiden name was Adams, but did not record where hediscovered that information.
He was taxed in 1691 and was living as a tenant on the Hall farm withRichard Blanchard in 1693. Another record indicates Thomas Peavey andRichard Blanchard on the Hall farm.

There are many different accounts regarding the appearance of the firstPeavey's in this country. The spelling of the name is only important insome aspects of tracking specific individuals and in tracing the line toour European roots. We have chosen to maintain a common spelling in orderto facilitate our record-keeping and research. By some accounts(Including the fine work by Leroy D. Peavey) Edward Peve was the first bythat name to settle in this country, specifically in the NH area. Hisfather may have been Thomas Peve and Martha (Eaton) Peve who resided inEngland and Edward may have come over with a brother John. We have givenEdward the middle name of Thomas based on the possible reference toThomas the father and a reference from the NH historical recordsregarding the rental of the Hall property by Edward Peavey. Anotherrecord for the same information states it was Thomas Peavey on the farm.Since we have no records of a Thomas in this time frame a combined nameof Edward Thomas Peavey might fit with both records. In addition, Thomasseems to be one of the most common names in the early Peavey lines.
There has been some discussion about Edward and another brother Williamof Portsmouth but the dates for this William seem to fit much better fora son of Edward rather than a brother. A possible brother John with awife Mary is not mentioned in any NH records. The only mention in thistime period is the son John Peavey who drowned in 1722. There is apossibility that he had a wife named Mary which would explain themarriage of John Peavey to Mary. We could add to the confusion if thiswidow Mary Peavey got remarried at some point to Samuel Holmes instead ofa daughter Mary. Nothing seems to indicate this so it is probably best toleave things as they are for now. We have not found anything definitiveto indicate that the are any Peavey descendants other than those who aredirectly descended from Edward. If Leroy is correct the first mention ofEdward was in the 1691 list of those who pledged to support the PuritanMinister Rev. John Cotton. He was not listed on the "Powder List" in 1690or an earlier "List" in 1688. With that in mind it is possible that oneor more of his sons were born in England or on the ship coming overrather than in Rockingham Co., NH. Again this minor detail is notextremely important to our research on the family. Leroy's notes on theorigination of name is very interesting and should be part of theeducation of all Peavey researchers.
Edward was originally in Portsmouth, moving from there to Dover (Durham),and then to "Bloody Point", a section of Dover. Edward was one of thepetitioners for the new town of Newington which was comprised of the"Bloody Point" section of Dover and a section of Portsmouth. Edward's sonAbel also signed the petition in 1713 indicating a birth prior to 1695 or1692, depending on the age requirements for signers of the document. Itis possible that the Edward who signed the document in 1713 was actuallyEdward but we have no evidence to prove this one way or the other.Nathaniel and Joseph also signed documents pertaining to the NewingtonParish in the same year. While this information does not pinpoint thebirth dates of these individuals, it does indicate a time-frame whichfits with the dates we have found based on research available in the LDSrecords. Additional information recorded by Leroy regarding rolls andother earlier records serve as further verification for the birth dateswe are using.
The family of Edward seems to have moved to different locations withinthe area based on further early records. Generally speaking Abel,Nathaniel, and Joseph are in Newington before moving elsewhere. Williamseems to have remained in the Portsmouth area. Peter ends up in Hampton,NH and then in Andover, Essex Co. MA as detailed by Leroy. Some ofPeter's children end up back in NH at a later point. Edward seems to havebeen in Newington but his line has not been identified as of yet. Johndies at an early age without issue as far as we know. Deborah, Jane andRachel seem to have stayed in the Dover area with their husbands andfamilies and we have not traced their lines beyond the first generationdue the necessary constraints we have placed on our research. Sarah andher husband Richard Carter went to ME as well as Mary and her husbandSamuel Holmes. It may be important to trace these lines in the event thatthey represent a connection to other Peavey's who later moved to ME.Other Peavey's also ended up throughout the New England area. We have notfound any connection to the Southern Peavey's which is not to say thatthere is no connection.
It would be helpful at this point to identify all of Edward's wife andhis children and to look at possible birth dates to avoid putting thesechildren in the wrong generation or with the wrong parents. The firstconsideration is the birth date for Edward Sr. who should likely be datedat least 21 years before he signed the pledge in 1691. This puts hisbirth before 1670. His son Abel Peavey was on "Col. Walton's Command" inthe French War Rolls in 1710. It is possible for young men to have foughtfrom the age of 16 years and up but 18 is more likely. This would put hisbirth before 1692. We have a fairly reliable birth date for Abel's sonHudson of Feb. 11, 1711 with a crossover to 1710. This means that Abelwas married to Mary Hudson by 1709. Again it is possible for him to havemarried as young as 18 years old but it is more likely that he was atleast 21 years of age. This would also fit better with his War service in1710. Our conclusion is that his birth date is c. 1688. This is supportedby various family trees and LDS records. If Abel was the eldest son andwe assume Edward was at least 21 when he was married the most commonlyused birth date of 1666 and a marriage date of 1687 would be as close aswe can come to the actual dates. It might also be good to point out herethat Rachel (Adams?) was most likely the mother of all of Edward'schildren. A Rachel Peavey marries Selathiel Denbow Dec. 19, 1720 inNewington. This has to be the widow of Edward or a daughter of his.Rachel, the daughter of Edward gets married to Thomas Rowe January 17,1720 in Newington. This younger Rachel has a daughter Mary Rowe in 1723.Since the widow Rachel would be at least 50 years old at this point itdoes not seem likely she married Thomas Rowe and the daughter marriedSelathiel. Some have put forward the possibility that Mary Clough/Cluffwas the mother of some of Ed's earlier children. It would seem unlikelythat Edward married a Mary Cluff and his son Abel also married a MaryCluff in c. 1717. There are no records that indicate the birth of a MaryClough/Cluff before 1670 which would be the latest birth date for her ifshe was the mother of Abel who was likely born in 1688 as previouslydemonstrated. The following is what we consider to be the most likelyfamily tree based on the available information.
Abel Peavey (1688) married Mary Hudson (1689) in 1709/10. She died before1713 since her father's will dated 1713 indicates she was no longeralive. She had three children in that four year time-frame so these datesseem to be match with the additional information available.
Children of Abel Peavey and Mary Hudson as confirmed by JohnHudson's will
Hudson Peavey Feb. 11, 1710/11
Thomas Peavey June 19, 1714
Abel Peavey June 30, 1716
We have a marriage record for the 2nd marriage for Abel to Mary Clough(Cluff?) in 1717 according to the Newington Town records. LDS has a dateof Dec. 19, 1720. To this marriage was born Ezekiel who was christenedJune 2, 1734. At this point Abel was a member in good standing with thechurch in Newington and Christenings seem to be taking place shortlyafter the birth of the child so the Christening date is likely very closeto the birth date. We have not found any further mention of Ezekiel atthis point other than a record from the Revolutionary War. An earlierbirth date would make him fairly old to be serving in the RevoluntionaryWar unless this is a reference to a different Ezekiel. The birth of achild 17 years after their marriage seems unlikely but we have no otherrecords to prove this one way or the other. A likely birth date for MaryClough is 1690-1700 which would make her 34-44 at the birth of Ezekiel. This would fit but doesn't answer the question about the late birth. Italso does not address why Abel's children by Mary Hudson were living withtheir grandparents and not with Abel and his new wife Mary. Somemysteries will not be resolved without a time machine. This seems to bethe complete family for Abel with the most likely dates possible at thispoint. See the notes for Abel to get an overview on his lines.

There are many sources for the Family of Edward Peve.
In ME/NH Genealogical Dictionary, pg 48 states:
Alter Edward Pevey to Pavey. It is unclear as to what Edward changed hisname or why. We do know that Samuel b. 1710 (son of Nathaniel, as listedbelow) m. Mary Cone did go by Pavey. Samuel's descendants use thisspelling to date. It is also important t o note that I haven't foundsource to positively prove that this Samuel Pavey was the son ofNathaniel (as listed below). I've found many other trees/gen ealogiesstating this connection. Cannot prove nor disprove so I've left on untilmore is known. There is some question whether this Samuel Pavey linefits here based on the surname spelling-more research is currently beingdone .

Many researchers have listed John Coates and Elizabeth Thornhill as her parents, but this may not be correct (see below). Other possibilities are Thomas Coates and Mary, or Richard Coates and Mary. Until I get things sorted out, I am linking all three sets of possible parents here. Her parents aren't yet proven.
Of her, the Charles Dixon book (1891) says, "It is proper that a few lines should be given to a notice of Mrs. Dixon, whose maiden names was Susanna Coates. But little is known with reference to her family. She was however a connection of an eminent thread manufacturing firm of that name in Manchester, and one of her younger sisters named Isabella, came to Nova Scotia about the same time she did, as the wife of John Trenholm. They settled at Point De Bute, and lived to advanced age, and were progenitors of the numerous families of that name now living in Westmorland and Cumberland and adjacent counties*. The writer is of the opinion that the Coates family or families** who came to Nova Scotia at about the same time Mr. Dixon came, and settled at Amherst and in King's county, were also relatives of Susanna and Isabel Coates. Mr. Dixon had quite extensive business relations with a William Coates for a number of years after he came to Sackville, and for whom he probably named his youngest son. Mrs. Dixon was blessed with a strong and vigorous constitution and also in a marked degree possessed the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit. She cheerfully and patiently endured the discomforts and privations incident to pioneer life, while diligently discharging her duties as a wife and mother. She was somewhat low in stature, though capable of an unusual amount of physical endurance. She was some nine years younger than her husband, but survived him as many years."

*see http://www.trenholm.org -- which says that Isabella Coates, b. ca. 1738 at Hilton, Hutton Rudby Parish, Yorkshire, md John Trenholm 21 Dec 1761 in Yorkshire, and they came to Canada on the "Duke of York" in 1772. Children were John, William, Mary, Susannah, Elizabeth, Robert, and Jane Trenholm. Isabella Coates Trenholm d. 10 Mar 1817 at Pt. De Bute, Westmoreland, New Brunswick and is buried in the Methodist Cemetery at Pt. De Bute. According to this site, she was the daughter of Richard Coates (b. abt. 1700 at Hilton, Hutton Rudby Parish, Yorkshire, d. bef. 3 June 1743 at Hilton, Hutton Rudby Parish, Yorkshire) and his wife Mary (b. abt. 1712 at Hilton, Hutton Rudby Parish, Yorkshire, d. bef. 1788 at Rudby in Cleveland, Yorkshire, remarried to Wm. Moody 3 Feb 1748 at Crathorne, Yorkshire). Richard and Mary were married about 1730. Possible siblings of Isabella Coates Trenholm listed on this site: William, Richard, Luke, and George.
If the parentage of Isabella Coates listed on the above site is correct, and if it's also correct that Susannah Coates was an older sister of Isabella Coates Trenholm, then this is probably Susannah's christening record: Susannah Cotes, dau. of Richard Cotes and Mary, christened 23 May 1736 at Stainton In Cleveland, Yorkshire, England (extracted records, IGI).
other poss. siblings:
Richard Coates, s/o Richard, chr. 18 May 1729, Stainton in Cleveland, Yorkshire.
Wm. Coates, s/o Richard, chr. 27 Jan 1731 at Stainton by Stockton, Yorkshire (d. 18 Sep 1732).
Wm. Coats, s/o Richard, chr. Aug 1733 at Startforth, Yorkshire.
George Coates, s/o Richard, chr. 25 Nov 1738 at Startforth, Yorkshire.
(not sure about the last two...Startforth is abt. 25 miles from Stainton. Stainton is right next to Rudby, Hutton Rudby, Crathorne, Yarm, Kirklevington, Hilton, Maltby, Thornton, Ormesby, and Middlesbrough).
**Thomas Coates and his first wife Ann Hood came to Nova Scotia with the Yorkshire Settlers on the ship "Duke of York" in 1772. A few years later Ann died, leaving at least six children. Thomas married Elizabeth Henry and they began raising their family of nine children in the Nappan area of Nova Scotia. In 1804, they left members from the first marriage on the homestead and moved with their children to Smith Creek, Kings County, New Brunswick to live on a newly purchased one-thousand acre lot of land." (see http://www.rubycusack.com/issue139.html ). Thomas Coates is buried at Smith's Creek, King's County, New Brunswick. His tombstone bears the following inscription: "In memory of Thomas Coates who emigrated from England in 1772 and resided in Nova Scotia until 1804. From thense came to this place when the country was almost a wilderness with but few inhabitants and departed this life, April 3, 1813 in the 72nd year of his age". (i.e. ca. 1742)(see the "Yorkshire Emigration" page at http://www.libris.ca/yrkfam/yrkpas.htm )
note: Thomas Coates, son of Thomas Coates, was christened 1 Jan 1741/1742 at the parish church at Felixkirk, Yorkshire, England (extracted records, IGI). He was born at Sutton Under Whitestone Cliffe, Yorkshire, and christened at Felixkirk according to researchers. According to several researchers, his parents (Thomas Coates and Mary) also emigrated to Canada, and died there in 1780.
Photos of the gravestones of Susannah Coates Dixon and her husband Charles Dixon may be seen at http://members.tripod.com/~grgordon/dixroach_cem.htm or http://cablespeed.com/~ctdixon/genealogy.html (<a href="http://members.tripod.com/~grgordon/dixroach_cem.htm" TARGET="_blank">click here</a> or <a href="http://cablespeed.com/~ctdixon/genealogy.html" TARGET="_blank">here</a>.)
The inscription on her gravestone reads as follows: "Erected in memory of Susannah Dixon, a native of Yorkshire, England, who departed this life the 14th day of June 1826, Aged 88 Years."
Many researchers have her death date as 13 June 1826. Not sure which date is correct.
If the age on the gravestone is correct, this places her birth as late 1737 or early 1738. If so, her mother couldn't have been Catherine Thornhill, who married John Coates on 4 May 1742. The only way John Coates could be her father is if he had a previous marriage, unless her age on the gravestone is incorrect.
Christenings for a Susannah Coates found in Yorkshire, England in the right time period:

*Susannah Cotes, d/o Richard Cotes and Mary, chr. 23 May 1736 at Stainton in Cleveland, Yorkshire
Susanna Coates, d/o John Coates, chr. 11 Apr 1736 at Hampsthwaite, Yorkshire
Susannah Coats, d/o Robert Coats, chr. 30 Jan 1740 at Felixkirk, Yorkshire
(#3 above is the most likely, as previously explained. It's not entirely certain, however, if any of these is the right Susannah Coates -- not all christening records from that time period have been preserved).

Charles DIXON brought his family from Yorkshire, England to New Brunswick, Canada on board the "Duke of York" in 1772, and afterwards had a great influence over many of his former acquaintances in Yorkshire, by his letters home persuading many more people from Yorkshire to emigrate to New Brunswick. Among the new settlers there was quite a controversy over whether Charles Dixon had over-exaggerated the merits of the new land (see http://www.rootsweb.com/%7Enscumber/files/pdffiles/nsmith1.pdf <a href="http://www.rootsweb.com/%7Enscumber/files/pdffiles/nsmith1.pdf" TARGET="_blank">letters #2 and #3</a>). Some of Charles Dixon's own writings are included in the book, HISTORY OF CHARLES DIXON, ONE OF THE EARLY ENGLISH SETTLERS OF SACKVILLE, N.B. (NEW BRUNSWICK), originally published in 1891 in Sackville, New Brunswick, Canada by his grandson James D. Dixon (The entire book is online at http://home.comcast.net/~montemac/yorkshire2000/charles-dixon-book.html and is very interesting indeed -- see <a href="http://home.comcast.net/~montemac/yorkshire2000/charles-dixon-book.html" TARGET="_blank">Charles Dixon Book</a>).
Some excerpts:
"Charles Dixon came from Yorkshire, England, to Nova Scotia in the year 1772, and settled at Sackville, New Brunswick. Mr. Dixon was among the first of the English immigrants to what was then called Cumberland, Nova Scotia (which included not only the present County of Cumberland, but also a large portion of the Province of New Brunswick, notably the counties of Westmoreland and Albert), who settled at Sackville, and believing that he had done wisely himself, he encouraged others of his Yorkshire acquaintance to follow his example.
"Very soon after the arrival of Mr. Dixon and the other English families who proceeded [preceded] or immediately followed him, the Revolutionary War broke out. As a large proportion of the inhabitants of Sackville, at that period, were natives of Massachusetts, and the adjoining Colonies, and had only been absent from their native country a few years, it is not surprising that some of them should be inclined to sympathise with the Revolutionists and actively espouse their cause; and aided and encouraged by a force from Calais they for a time besieged Fort Cumberland. That enterprise however was soon abandoned, and they found more congenial employment in raiding the homes of the loyal and peaceable inhabitants, plundering them of such articles as they were in need of, and destroying or carrying away any guns or ammunition they might find. Mr. Dixon's home did not escape their unwelcome notice. His house was robbed of many valuable articles, some of which he kept for sale. For a considerable period the loyal inhabitants, notably the English settlers, were subjected to a state of anxiety, and lived in dread of a repetition of such unwelcome visits. On one occasion when some of these people were approaching the house, Mrs. Dixon hastily gathered up her silverware and other valuables and deposited them in a barrel of pig feed, where they quite escaped the notice of the visitors. On a later occasion, when somewhat similar troublous times existed, Mr. Dixon, with the aid of his negro servant Cleaveland, hid his money and other valuables in the earth; binding his servant by a solemn oath never to divulge to any one the place of concealment. These incidents may serve to remind us of some of the perils and difficulties our ancestors were compelled to encounter very soon after their arrival in the country.
"The family record of Charles Dixon as kept by himself here follows:
Charles Dixon and Susannah Coates were married June 24th, 1763.
Mary Dixon, born Friday, July 5, 1764.
Charles Dixon, born Friday, January 10, 1766.
Susannah Dixon, born Friday, July 24, 1767.
Elizabeth Dixon, born Sunday, August 25, 1770.
Ruth Dixon, born Wednesday, September 16, 1772.
Martha Dixon, born Thursday, June 3, 1774.
Edward Dixon, born Friday, September 20, 1776.
William Coates Dixon, born Tuesday, February 23, 1779."
Upon the flyleaf of his family bible, Charles Dixon wrote,
"Sackville, N.B., 21st May 1810. This day, 38 years ago, we landed at Fort Cumberland from Hutton Rudby, in Cleveland, Yorkshire, myself, my wife, Mary, Charles, Susanna and Elizabeth, six in all, and at this day the family has multiplied to ninety-four, all alive, save infants, and Ruth, my daughter, who departed 20th March last, much regretted by all who knew her, aged 37 years and three months, but our loss is her gain. She died as she lived, a Christian. Thus has the mercy and goodness of God followed us hitherto. (Signed,) Charles Dixon.
"May 21st, 1815. This day, forty-three years ago, we landed at Fort Cumberland, with four children, viz: Mary, Charles, Susanna, and Elizabeth. Four more were added, viz.: Ruth, Martha, Edward and William, all alive save a favorite, Ruth, and I suppose we are multiplied to not less, at this day than one hundred and thirty. But why are we thus multiplied and spared so long? Because God's mercy is over all his works. (Signed,) Charles Dixon. Aged 85.

General Notes: Wife - Susannah Coates

General Notes: Child - Mary Dixon
from HISTORY OF CHARLES DIXON, One of the Early English Settlers of Sackville, N(ew) B(runswick) (1891), Compiled by James D. Dixon -- A Grandson, p. 17-18:
"MARY DIXON, the eldest daughter of Charles and Susanna Dixon, married William Chapman, the 1st, who came to Nova Scotia in 1775 and settled at Point de Bute, and whose descendants are probably more numerous than any of the English immigrants of that period, and are scattered far and wide, although a host of the name still remains in the counties of Cumberland and Westmoreland.
William Chapman who married Mary Dixon in the year 1780, was a mechanic, who worked at the carpenter trade during the largest portion of his life. He did the joiner work of the brick house built by his father-in-law, Mr. Dixon, before mentioned. He settled at Fort Lawrence so called, where he had a valuable farm. The children of William Chapman and his wife, Mary Dixon, were:
William, born June 13, 1782.
Susanna, born March 19, 1784.
Elizabeth, born Feb'y 9, 1786.
Jane, born December 3, 1787.
Charles, born Sept. 28, 1789.
Henry, born Sept. 2, 1791.
John born Sept. 8, 1793.
Richard, born Sept. 8, 1795.
Jennie, born April 8, 1799.
Sidney Smith, b'rn Aug. 13, 1801.
Mary, born June 26, 1804.
Horatio Nelson, born ---- 1807.
Mary Dixon Chapman departed this life on the 22nd of December, 1837 in the 74th year of her age. Mr. Chapman survived his partner several years and died in March 1844, aged 87 years.
Mr. and Mrs. Chapman were honest, peaceable and industrious citizens, attendants upon the services of the Methodist church, within whose pale they found their spiritual home. Their remains rest in the Point de Bute Methodist church yard, which was a portion of the estate of the first Mr. Chapman, who gave it for a site for a Methodist church and burial place."

General Notes: Child - Charles Dixon
At the age of six, Charles immigrated with his parents from England to Canada. An interesting fact: in 1803 he traveled across the entire U.S. (from north to south): from Canada to present-day Cincinnati by foot, then by boat down the Mississippi to New Orleans. This was prior to the Lewis & Clark expedition! He returned to Canada by sea. In 1837 he joined the LDS (Mormon) Church and moved his family to Kirtland, Ohio, where they remained until 1854. He died while the family was moving to Utah to gather with the Saints.
from HISTORY OF CHARLES DIXON, One of the Early English Settlers of Sackville, N(ew) B(runswick), Compiled by James D. Dixon -- A Grandson, 1891:
"CHARLES DIXON, eldest son of Charles and Susanna Coates Dixon, was six years old when he left England and came with his parents to Nova Scotia. He was a healthy, vigorous youth, capable of any amount of physical endurance. At the age of sixteen, during the closing years of the Revolutionary War, he and other youths of Sackville and vicinity were taken to Fort Cumberland to perform garrison duty, and acquitted themselves creditably.
In the year 1788 he married Miss Rhoda Emmerson, a daughter of one of the original grantees of Sackville. Mr. Dixon settled on a portion of the land purchased by his father from Danial Hawkins, and rapidly redeemed the same from the wilderness and turned it into fruitful fields.
.....Mrs. Rhoda Emmerson Dixon died July 17, 1799, in the thirtieth year of her age. Mr. Dixon soon after married Miss Elizabeth Humphrey, eldest daughter of Mrs. William Humphrey, of whom mention has been previously made. This marriage, occurring so soon after the death of his first wife, so shocked the sense of propriety of Mr. Dixon's Methodist associates (for he was a member of the Methodist Society) as to cause for a time some estrangement. His parents, however, were the more inclined to overlook the offence, inasmuch as the bride being a Yorkshire lass, the alliance was regarded by them with more favor than the former one. Doubtless they believed (as most Yorkshire people do to the present day) that there is no one quite the equal of a good Yorkshireman.
......Mr. Dixon turned his attention occasionally to various enterprises quite outside of his farming operations. He also had a strong desire to see some other portions of America. About the year 1803, he and a young neighbor named Timothy Richardson visited the United States, through which they journeyed, much of the time on foot, until they reached Ohio. At or near the place now called Cincinnati, they had a boat constructed in which they pursued their journey to New Orleans. From thence they took passage by sea to New York, where in due time they arrived. Mr Dixon, however, fell ill with fever and ague which occasioned increased expenses and delay. Fortunately his brother in law, George Bulmer, was in the city, and finding them out, rendered them such pecuniary aid as they required to enable them to pursue their journey homeward. They then took passage for home with one Capt. Burnham. At Mount Desert they were detained by the severity of the weather for a considerable time, but at length reached home in safety. Whether Mr. Dixon or his companion then had thoughts of finding a home in the United States, is not known.
Soon after his return home he made preparations for brewing ale, and erected one or two stone buildings for that purpose, near where the residence of J. R. Rainie now stands. This enterprise not proving a success, he next turned his attention to the erection of a windmill near the same spot. This also proved unsuccessful, and he subsequently made extensive preparations, and built another mill on a much more expensive scale which stood near his own residence. This one promised to give good satisfaction, but was unfortunately destroyed by fire, and proved a serious pecuniary loss. In 1825 he and his son-in-law Mr. McKinlay, entered into an arrangement to build a ship, upon which in the early part of 1826 they had made considerable progress, when news came from England of a serious decline in the price of ships. They then ceased work, and about two years subsequently sold out to other parties who completed the vessel.
After this unprofitable speculation, Mr. Dixon confined his attention quite successfully to his farm until he sold out, and removed with his wife and seven youngest children to Ohio in the year 1837. Mr. Dixon's removal to Ohio was due to the fact that several of his family had recently embraced the views of the people called Mormons, or Latter Day Saints, and he felt it to be the only safe and proper course for him to pursue. The writer has a vivid recollection of an interview that took place between Mr. Dixon and his brother Edward, at which he earnestly pressed upon his brother's consideration, his recently embraced views, and faithfully exhorted him to follow his example, and warning him of the folly and danger of remaining in a country so soon to be destroyed, as he believed.
Mr. Dixon and family left Sackville on the first day of September, 1837, and travelled in a number of covered wagons, arriving at Kirtland, Ohio, the place of their destination, on the 14th of October, where he purchased a property and settled his family. The year following in the autumn, he, with his daughter Jane and youngest son, started for Missouri. Soon after they had crossed the Missouri River, they met large numbers of the Mormon people, who were being driven out of that state by force, most of whom were in a most destitute condition. They returned with these people to Quincy, Illinois, where Mr. Dixon hired a house and remained for the winter, and liberally used his means in entertaining and relieving the necessities of these poor suffering destitute brethren. The following spring he returned to Ohio (Kirtland), where he pursued with his usual diligence and industry his occupation of farming until the spring of 1854. When he had entered upon his 89th year, and had become nearly blind*, he and his wife, with some of the family, left Ohio for Salt Lake City. They arrived at Rock Island and halted for a few days, while their party were fitting up and getting their teams ready for the journey across the plains. Here Mr. Dixon, on account of his blindness, fell from the steps of a hotel and sustained injuries which proved fatal, and his death occurred on the 22nd day of May (1854). He was buried at Davenport, Iowa. The family pursued their journey, arriving safely at their destination. Mrs. Dixon survived her husband some eleven years, and died at about the same age." from HISTORY OF CHARLES DIXON, One of the Early English Settlers of Sackville, N(ew) B(runswick) (1891), Compiled by James D. Dixon -- A Grandson, p. 91-92:
"SUSANNAH DIXON, the second daughter of Charles and Susannah Coates Dixon, married George Bulmer, in the year 1784. Mr. Bulmer, as previously stated, came when a lad of 12 years of age from England in the same ship with Mr. Dixon and his family, and a few years subsequently, his mother and several of her sons came out and settled near Amherst, where some of their descendants still remain. The Bulmer family is said to be of Norman descent. Mr. George Bulmer purchased a large lot of land adjoining the farm of his father-in-law, which he industriously improved and cultivated for many years, until he became somewhat deranged and this affliction having assumed a somewhat alarming aspect it was deemed necessary in the interests of his family to invoke the action of the Court of Chancery; and a decree was obtained by which the property was placed in the hands of Commissioners, who should control the same for the maintenance of Mr. and Mrs. Bulmer and in the interest of the family. Mr. and Mrs. Bulmer both survived for many years after the above action was taken. Mrs. Bulmer died in 1835 aged 67 years, and Mr. Bulmer in 1841, aged 82 years."
The author has not been able to obtain access to the family register of George and Susanna Dixon Bulmer, or to any data showing the exact date of their marriage or the births of their children, but from the circumstances that have come to his knowledge he believes the following to be correct:
Jane, born in 1785.
James B., born in 1789.
John, born in 1793.
Ann, born in 1797.
Isabel, born in 1801.

General Notes: Child - Elizabeth Dixon
from HISTORY OF CHARLES DIXON, One of the Early English Settlers of Sackville, N(ew) B(runswick) (1891), Compiled by James D. Dixon -- A Grandson, p.126-127:
"ELIZABETH DIXON, third daughter of Charles and Susannah Coates Dixon, was married to Dr. Rufus Smith in the year 1789. They settled at Westmoreland Point, near Fort Cumberland, at that time a centre of wealth and influence. Dr. Smith's medical practice soon attained large proportions, extending over the counties of Cumberland and Westmoreland. He belonged to one of the Loyalist families, and inherited a vigorous constitution. It is said of him that he never failed to respond promptly to the call of a patient whatever difficulties or dangers had to be encountered and overcome in the attempt to reach the patient's home. He was a kind and obliging man, ever ready to assist a neighbor or anyone who needed assistance. He represented Westmoreland county in the Assembly from 1816 to 1827, and again from 1830 to 1834. He continued the practice of his profession until within a brief period of his death, which occurred in the year 1844, in the seventy-eighth year of his age. The family of Elizabeth Dixon and her husband, Dr. Rufus Smith, consisted of:
Fanny - born 1790
Polly - born 1792
Charles Dixon - born 1794
William Coates - born 1796
Mary Elizabeth - born 1799
Matilda - born 1802
Edward B. - born 1805
Lucy - born 1807
Ruth Roach - born 1811
Diana Gay - born 1814
One other died in infancy, and of the above named Polly and Lucy died in childhood. Mrs. Smith survived her husband fifteen years. Two of her daughters having married and being resident at Richibucto, she, with two others, removed there also, where she died in the year 1859, aged 88 years."

General Notes: Child - Ruth Dixon
from HISTORY OF CHARLES DIXON, One of the Early English Settlers of Sackville, N(ew) B(runswick) (1891), Compiled by James D. Dixon -- A Grandson, p.140-141:
"RUTH DIXON, fourth daughter of Charles and Susannah Coates Dixon, married Thomas Roach in the year 1793. Mr. and Mrs. Roach settled at Fort Lawrence where Mr. Roach owned a large and valuable property. He was also engaged in Merchandise and subsequently in shipbuilding. Mr. Roach was elected to the Provincial Parliament in 1799 and occupied a set in that body until 1826, having been elected five times in succession. Mr. Roach was a Methodist Local Preacher of more than ordinary ability and a liberal supporter of Methodist and benevolent institutions. The family of Thomas and Ruth Dixon Roach consisted of the following, viz:
John - born 1794
Susannah D. - born 1795
Jean - born 1797
Charles D. - born 1800
Mary - born 1802
Thomas - born 1805
Edward - born 1807
Mrs. Roach died in March 1810, in the 38th year of her age. In a memoir of her, written by her husband, it is stated that about one week previous to her death she was taken ill and complained of a severe pain in her side, and that medical aid was not obtained for about three days. When her brother-in-law, Dr. Rufus Smith, was called, who bled her on the occasion of his first visit, which was on Sunday and again on Monday, and again on Tuesday, and that Mrs. Roach died the following Thursday. Doubtless the medical treatment she received would be very unfavorably regarded at the present day, yet there is no room to doubt that Dr. Smith did all in his power to arrest the progress of the disease and save the life of one so greatly beloved and esteemed, with whom he and his family were so nearly connected. Mr. Roach says of her that she was a devoted Christian woman and died in the faith of the Gospel.
Mr. Roach was subsequently married, first, to a widow lady, Mrs. Sarah Allan, and after her death, to a Miss Mary Dickson of Onslow, N.S., and after her decease to a Miss Charlotte Wells, who survived him several years. None of the three last wives left children. Mr. Roach died in 1833, aged 65 years."

from HISTORY OF CHARLES DIXON, One of the Early English Settlers of Sackville, N(ew) B(runswick) (1891), Compiled by James D. Dixon -- A Grandson, p.152-153:
MARTHA, youngest daughter of Charles and Susannah Coates Dixon, married the Rev. Benjamin Wilson in 1793. Mr. Wilson was a native of Virginia, and appointed by one of the American Conferences, at the request of Bishop Black, to labor in the Provinces. He came to the Cumberland Circuit early in the year 1893 [1793]. In 1895 [1795] he was sent to St. John. He occupied several other circuits in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, remaining in the work of the ministry about ten years, when he decided to locate. His father-in-law, Mr. Dixon, supplied him with the capital to commence merchandise at Dorchester, and a short time after permitted his son William C., to enter as a partner into the business, which was conducted until about 1820 in the name of Wilson & Dixon. During the latter part of this partnership term, the firm experienced heavy losses in their lumbering operations, and through the failure, or dishonesty, of an agent in England. Mr. Wilson very soon became a prominent man in the community and in 1820 was elected one of the representatives for Westmoreland County in the Provincial Parliament. Mr. Wilson's death occurred September 20th, 1824. While in the act of crossing the Straits of Northumberland in a small schooner laden with salt, commanded by Capt. Samuel Cornwall, through the inclemency of the weather or other causes, the vessel, cargo and all on board were lost. Mrs. Wilson survived her husband about twenty-five years, and died in 1849, age 74 years.
The family of Martha Dixon and her husband Benjamin Wilson, bore the following names:
Susannah, born Aug. 1795.
Mary Elisabeth, born May 1798.
Martha, born May 1804.
Jane Ruth, born March 1806.
Benjamin, born Mar. 1808.
Fanny Black, born June 1810.
Louisa Ann, born Jun. 1812.
Charles, born May 1815.
Hannah Caroline, born July 1819.
Three others, viz. Joseph, Ann and Edward, died in childhood and infancy."

General Notes: Child - Edward Dixon
from HISTORY OF CHARLES DIXON, One of the Early English Settlers of Sackville, N(ew) B(runswick) (1891), Compiled by James D. Dixon -- A Grandson, p.169-170:
"EDWARD, second son of Charles and Susannah Coates Dixon, resided at Sackville on the homestead farm of his Father. He married Mary Smith, daughter of John Smith, who was a Yorkshire Methodist Local Preacher and lived for a time at Falmouth, N.S., where several of his family (including Mary above named) were baptised by the Rev. Freeborn Garretson. Mr. Smith removed from Falmouth and settled at Parrsboro, where a number of his descendants still remain. His wife was a sister of Thomas Bowser, one of the early Yorkshire settlers of Sackville.
The family of Edward and Mary Smith Dixon, who were married in 1802, bore the following names:
Charles - born 1803
Edwin - born 1805
Elizabeth - born 1806
Jane Bamford - born 1808
John Edward - born 1811
George Smith (twin) - born 1814
William Coates (twin) - born 1814
Rufus Smith - born 1816
James Dunbar - born 1819
Another, born in 1810, died in infancy.
Mr. Dixon followed farming with fair success for a number of years. In 1825 he entered into an arrangement with a Mr.Venning to build a ship for the English market. The arrangement was carried into effect the year following. In the mean time the price of ships had fallen off so greatly that the enterprise resulted in heavy financial loss. After this, Mr. Dixon confined his attention to his farm until 1842, when he rented his farm and devoted the greater part of his time to visiting the remote and sparsely populated portions of the surrounding country, assisting in holding religious services, distributing books of a religious character, and striving to promote the spiritual welfare of the people. This work he continued until near the close of his life. Mr. Dixon was for over half a century a zealous and consistent member of the Methodist Church, a large portion of which period he held the offices of Trustee, Steward and Leader, in all of which he diligently and faithfully labored to promote the advancement of God's cause. Mrs. Dixon was also a deeply pious and devoted member of the same church for an equal period of time. She died in the year 1854, aged 74 years. Mr. Dixon survived his wife about seven years and died in 1851 , aged 85 years, nearly."

from HISTORY OF CHARLES DIXON, One of the Early English Settlers of Sackville, N(ew) B(runswick) (1891), Compiled by James D. Dixon -- A Grandson, p.190-191:
"WILLIAM COATES, youngest son of Charles and Susannah Coates Dixon, after attaining his majority, continued to assist his Father and Brother Edward in the management of the farm until the year 1808, when he entered into partnership with his brother-in-law Benjamin Wilson at Dorchester, where they conducted a mercantile business. They were also engaged in lumbering operations, and during a portion of this partnership period, Mr. Dixon resided at Shediac, where in the year 1820 he married Miss Matilda Beckwith, daughter of John Steadman Beckwith, Esq. Soon after his marriage the partnership business terminated and Mr. Dixon and family returned to Sackville and settled on his farm where they remained until the year 1827. Then they sold the farm to Mr. Crane and returned to Shediac where they kept a hotel for a few years, and then removed to, and settled upon a farm at Buctouche, where they resided until death. The family of William Coates and Matilda Beckwith Dixon consisted of three sons and three daughters named as follows:
Horatio Edward, born July 25, 1821.
Mary A., born December 9, 1822.
Lavinia Caroline, born August 11, 1826.
Caroline Lavinia, born September 8, 1830.
John Steadman, born October 7, 1833.
William James, born May 27, 1836.
Mr. Dixon, who was quite blind for several years previous, died in 1865 in the 87th year of his age. Mrs. Dixon's death occurred quite suddenly within a few days after that of her husband, at the age of 64 years. They were life-long attendants upon the services of the Methodist Church; and services were frequently held at their house, which was ever a home for the Ministers of the Gospel. As they lived, so also they died in the faith of the Gospel."
