BAR HARBOR — Avis Katrine Keene, at 82 years of age, went home to her Savior June 20, 2012, after a long battle with Alzheimer's. She spent her last four years at Sonogee. Avis was born Sept. 12, 1929, in West Sebois.
The earliest years of her life were marked by tragedy having lost her mother when she was 8 years of age. Under state care, Avis and her young siblings were placed in a foster home where she was to learn the hardships of labor — scrubbing floors on her hands and knees, washing dishes, doing laundry and waiting on the boarders that her foster parents attracted to The Brookdale Farm in West Sebois. There was little joy or play in Avis' childhood, but in reflecting on these years, it is clear that it helped cement the bond with her siblings, who were subjected to these trials as well. This experience, as difficult as it was, prepared her for a life of selfless service to her family and friends. After leaving Lee Academy, Avis came to Bar Harbor upon the encouragement of her teacher, Nancy McFarland, who summered there. Avis began working with Mrs. McFarland at the elegant Malvern Belmont Estates. There she met a handsome, charming young sailor, William Samuel Keene. They courted and subsequently married in 1947. Together they raised a family of four and ultimately welcomed 19 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren. For decades, Avis' arms lovingly cradled babies — her own children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren while she cooed them to sleep with sweet lullabies. As they all grew Avis introduced them to the magic of camp. Each weekend during three seasons, Avis and Bill would be at their camp at Donnell's Pond in Franklin where Avis was something to all: swooping toddlers in the cool pond — waiting for the squeals of delight and pleas for more, baking blueberry pies in the woodstove, serving afternoon coffee (just at the right time or on demand) brewed slowly on the woodstove bubbling under the glass knob of the percolator or preparing a big spread of homemade baked beans with freshly prepared yeast rolls for whoever was at camp. At home or at camp, Avis was able to satisfy and charm with her homemade culinary delights. On occasion when Avis needed a little solitude, she would grab the walking stick Bill made for her and head to the blueberry barrens. Here she would walk and commune with nature spotting an occasional bear or deer or on rare occasions a bobcat. Her walks helped her to recharge — knowing all the while Bill was keeping the children and grandchildren busy with badminton, horseshoes or boating. During the cold winter months, Avis created intricate quilts by hand-preferring her steady stitch rather than the speed of the electric sewing machine. She also taught her grandchildren to knit and crochet. Many of these handcrafted treasures became gifts. She also found pleasure in traveling to visit family in Florida and North Carolina, reading and doing word puzzles. Having lived a fairly traditional life as a stay-at-home mother and devoted wife, late in her life at the age of 64, when most women have long retired, Avis got her driver's license. This afforded her the freedom to travel way beyond the miles that her feet had previously carried her giving her a great sense of independence and accomplishment. Throughout her life, she was devoted to God and Jesus Christ and was a longtime member of St. Saviour's Episcopal Church, Bar Harbor.
She is survived by a brother, Dick Shaw; one sister, Jean Peters; sons, Bill Jr. and wife, Marge, Dick and wife, Gail, Jerry and wife, Barbara; one daughter, Debbie Oechslie and husband, Bob; 19 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Avis was predeceased by her husband, Bill Keene Sr.; her father, William Percy Shaw and mother, Edna Mae (Bragg) Shaw; a brother, Francis; and sisters, Norma, Mary, Christine and Hattie.

Keith, Angus - Jean Ammeter [decendants of NEIL KEITH & FLORA McDOUGALL]
Angus was born in Acton in 1865. He married Eliza Nixson. They farmed
in Acton where their children were born. The children attended the
Dublin school. This red brick school still stands today but has been
turned into a home. Eliza died in 1902, leaving a young family. In the
1910's Angus moved to Winnipeg where he was a road contractor. In 1915,
Angus was living in Headingley. He retired about 1925. He spent his
last years living with his daughter Mae and her husband Charlie
Sutherland at their home and restaurant at Winnipeg Beach. He used to
help them often peeling potatoes for Charlie's famous fish and chips.
During the winter, they lived at the Warwick Apartments in Winnipeg where
Angus died. He is buried beside his son Earl, at Brookside Cemetery,
Winnipeg.

General Notes: Wife - Christina Keith
Keith, Christina - Jean Ammeter [decendants of NEIL KEITH & FLORA
McDOUGALL]
Christina was born in 1851 and baptized in 1854 in Acton. She married
Joseph Anderson, son of George Anderson and Janet Ritchie. Joseph was
born in Knatchbull, Township of Nassagaweya, Halton County.
Christina and Joseph were married and settled in Acton. Joseph was a
busy and prosperous plasterer. In time he bought property on Bower
Avenue. There he built a brick house where he and Christina lived very
happily for several years. Joseph joined the Masons in Acton in July,
1887.
They had no children of their own but raised a niece, Katie and gave her
just such a home as if she had been their own. Katie was Elsie Kathleen
Douglas, a granddaughter of George Douglas and Annie Keith. It is not
know at this time if Elsie was adopted. Elsie used the name Douglas when
she was married and Christina referred to her as her niece in her will.
One day Christina was hanging out the clothes in the winter, when she
unfortunately slipped on the ice and fractured her thigh. This accident
kept her bedfast for many weeks but she was always most patient, never
murmuring and appreciated greatly the visits of her neighbors, who calls
to sympathize and give any necessary assistants.
When the reports came from Manitoba - Canada of the great success of some of the
man who went from the community to their farming operations, Joseph's
thoughts turn to the West. This longing grew, especially after a visits
of the McGregor Boys, who seemed to to be prosperous from the time of
reaping their crops. Joseph decided to give up plastering and go West.
They sold their home and went west in the spring about 1894. They went
to Hartney Manitoba - Canada and bought a farm on section 23-6-23. Like his old
neighbors, he prospered and in the course of time he became wealthy and
took the world easier. He sold a farm in 1903. They lived in the town
of Hartney.
It is not no one how often Joseph and Christina were able to go back to
Acton. Joseph made a trip back home in March 1900 four a 10 week visit
with friends. He took a couple of thoroughbred cattle with him to Acton.
In 1914, Elsie married Jack Hyde and she went to Saskatchewan. Where Jack
had his farm.
Joseph passed away on Friday July 18th, 1919. He had been ill for 3
weeks. The funeral was held in St. Paul's Presbyterian Church on the
Sunday evening at 8:30 P.M. Rev. Hanna preached the sermon. The body was
taken to Winnipeg on Monday's afternoon train. Interment was in
Brookside Cemetery on July 22nd Rev. Polson officiating. Joseph was
survived by 4 brothers, William and James of Acton, George of Hornby and
Robert of Milton and three sisters.
Following the funeral, Christina went with Elsie and her little son to
Elsie's home in Carnduff, Saskatchewan. There she stayed for an extended
visit.
Christina passed away quite unexpectedly at the home of J. J. Agnew*.
She was 73 years old. For sometime Christina had been almost a complete
invalid but lately had been much better. So much so that she felt equal
to going John Agnew's for a visit. The funeral was held in St. Paul's
Presbyterian Church in Hartney and conducted by Rev. J. M. Wallace,
assisted by Rev. M. Sutton, of the Friends Church (Quaker / Friendss) of Chain
Lakes. The service was held at 1 P.M. and proceeded to the C.N.R.
depot. Interment took place beside her husband at Brookside Cemetery,
Winnipeg, Manitoba - Canada. Christina was survived by brother Angus of Winnipeg,
sisters Sarah Kennedy of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan and Mary Davison of
Vancouver. Elsie was living at Redvers, Saskatchewan at the time.
In Joseph's will, he left $10,000 to his wife and Christina and the
remainder to his brothers and sisters. This was not settled till into
the late 1950s and the final money came from Flint, Michigan.
Christina's will left $6,000 to Elsie and the remainder to her brother
and sisters.

Keith, Duncan - Jean Ammeter [decendants of NEIL KEITH & FLORA McDOUGALL]
Duncan was born in Acton and farm beside his father. In 1886, Duncan
married Jane Sprowl, daughter of John Sprowl and Jane Cumming at her
parent's home. The Sprowl's were early pioneers in the area. Jane was
born in 1848 at Peru, near Milton and was 8 years old when she moved with
her parents to the second line near Acton. She attended the Dublin
School as did her children in later years. Jane died in 1901 after a long
and painful illness with cancer and just months after her husband's death.
"Sudden Death of Duncan Keith"
For some time Mr. Duncan Keith of lot 18, con. 2, Esquesing, had been in
poor health, but did not consider his condition serious. A week ago late
Sunday he drove over to Georgetown to consult his physician who advised
complete rest and freedom from exertion, his trouble being heart
affection. Last Thursday night he retired as usual. And shortly after
midnight suddenly expired. Mr. Keith was a son of the late Neil Keith,
and was born on the farm where he died 53 years ago. He was a respected
yeoman / farmer and a good neighbor. Duncan was a member of Ivanhoe Camp, Sons of
Scotland, Acton, which society attended his funeral in a body. Rev. H.A.
MacPherson conducted the burial rites.

Isabelle was born in 1875 in Acton. She married Thomas Hyde who was also
born in Acton in 1858, a descendant of Irish parents. Three sons , Jack,
Harvey and Neil were born in Ontario - Canada.
Tom moved west in 1901 to join Isabelle's brother-in-law George Douglas
Sr. and his two sons George Jr. and John Douglas. At Deloraine they
filed for homesteads in the Carnduff area. Since there were only 2 left
in the Goshen district, they drew names to see who would receive them.
Tom homesteaded SE 12-1-34-W1. He applied for his homestead in May 1901
and he and his family took up residents there in June 1902. When he
received the title to this land, he stated that he had built a sod house
12'x24', floored by lumber.
At Carnduff, 5 more children were born, the family later moved to Ne

Keith, Margaret Annie - Jean Ammeter [decendants of NEIL KEITH & FLORA
McDOUGALL]
Annie was born and raised on a farm near the town of Acton. In 1869 she
married George Douglas.
George Douglas, an only child, was born in Halton County and grew up in
the area of Acton where his father was a teacher. His mother died when
he was quit young. It was in Acton that George met Annie.
Following their marriage, they lived in Acton, Dundalk and several towns
between. They were living in Dundalk when George's father died in 1894.
George and Annie's son John recalled that when He was a young lad in
Ontario - Canada, he remembered the "Keith Men", his uncles coning to their home
at Christmas time. The brothers hugged and kissed Annie. They all wore
coon coats and young John was alarmed as he was afraid that these men
were going to kidnap or harm his mother. John understood that they had
returned from the west where they had been working on the railroad.
Three of George and Annie children had moved to Hartney. John and Neil
found work on farms and Mary looked after the house for them. In 1896*
George and Annie moved to Hartney with the rest of the family except
Annie who was married by that time.
Bringing with them their household effects, some stock and farm
equipment, George and Annie settled on a farm south of Hartney in the
West Hall District. The youngest children attended school at West Hall
and the family attended the West Hall church of which Annie was a
faithful and helpful member of the Woman's Missionary Society. In 1902,
George filed for a homestead NW12-1-34 W1 at Carnduff, in the Goschen
area. George was a great horseman and with his favorite horse he used to
drive back and forth between Hartney and the Goschen District.
Annie lived on the farm at Chain Lakes, surrounded always by some of her
family after two years of illness at which she was confined to her bed,
until her death in 1913.
"Annie Keith Douglas"
Born Acton, Halton Co., Ontario - Canada daughter of Neil Keith and Flora McDougall, after a

Thursday September 18th, 1913. Born in Halton County in 1849, settling
on a farm near Hartney where she lived till time of her death. Survived
by husband, 7 daughters and 5 sons.

and sympathetic mother. A good and highly respected neighbor, she will
be deeply missed in all these relationships in which she will be ever
beloved and cherished. "Hartney Star"
Following the death of his wife , George continued to farm until 1921.
He then moved to Carnduff to live with his son Joseph.

Keith, Neil - Jean Ammeter [decendants of NEIL KEITH & FLORA McDOUGALL]
Neil Keith was born in the Isle of Jura, Scotland. We did not know when Neil came to Canada. He was in Acton in 1845 as he is listed in the church records at the founding all of the church. Since it says that Flora came with her father's family in 1843, it may be that Neil and Flora where married in Acton but so far no records of this event. Neil purchased his first piece of land in 1854 on a second line, lot 18,
in the township of Esquesing. It was located about three miles from Acton on the road to Milton. Neil paid 137 pounds, ten shillings for 100
acres are the west half of lot 18. On the 26th November 1869, he purchased 100 acres off that East half. There is a farm site there today
but nothing of the original.
Neil died in 1885 on the land where he settled.

McDougall, Flora - Jean Ammeter [decendants of NEIL KEITH & FLORA
McDOUGALL]
Flora was born in the Parish of Bowmore, the Isle of Islay, Scotland.
It is not known at this time where or when Flora & Neil were married.
Since it is recorded that she came with her father's family in 1843 to
Canada, there must be some connection to the other McDougall's in the
area. They are listed in the church records and are buried in the same
area of the Fairview Cemetery. Future research will be done.
General Notes: Child - Flora Keith
Keith, Flora - Jean Ammeter [decendants of NEIL KEITH & FLORA McDOUGALL]
Flora was born in 1852 and christened in 1954 in Acton, Halton Co., Ontario - Canada. George
Agnew was born in 1843 in Ireland. He moved with his parents to
Lancashire, Scotland. From Scotland, George came to a Acton, Halton Co., Ontario - Canada as
did other members of his family. (See Robert Agnew story). It was in
Acton that George met Flora and they were married in 1870 at the Chalmers
Presbyterian Church, Guelph, Ontario - Canada by Rev. Wodrupp. The witnesses
where Christine Keith and James Chricnton.
George moved to Hartney and 1879. He traveled to Winnipeg by train,
where he filed for a homestead NW 1/4 14-5-23. Since there was no other
way off traveling to Hartney, George and other settlers walked from
Winnipeg to Deloraine. Once he located his homestead, he lived with Mr.
and Mrs. Cuthbert Robinson for one year until he built a slotted shanty.
That same year, 1880, he broke his land with a yoke of oxen and walking
plow. He walked to Souris for supplies and carried his plow shears to
have them sharpened. He had to swim the Souris River, and split wood all
night in order to pay for the sharpening of the shears.
Flora followed George to Hartney and 1883. She brought their children
Flora, Neil and Robert with her, leaving John and Annie behind to
continue their education. Three more children were born in Hartney to
complete the family of 8. The children attended Whitewater school.
Leader George Agnew applied for a second homestead in 1889 on SE 1/4
14-5-23. But he later lost this homestead and Mr. Little took over this
quarter for a short period. Mr. Little was not able to his fill his
homestead obligations and moved away. George then applied for this 1/4
section again. He stated that since he had a large family, had continued
to live on NE 1/414-5-23, and during the years 1895-1898, he had an
average of 43 cattle, 16 horses, a stone stable 40x70 ft. worth $1800 and
640 rods (1 mile) of two wire fence with cedar posts. On January 15th
1899, Ottawa approved and George now owned the SW1/4 and NE1/4 14-5-23
section.
Flora Agnew died suddenly July 20th 1909. George retired from farming in
the fall and spent the winter with friends in Acton "as he felt the
bereavement very keenly" of his wife Flora. In early March, 1910, George
returned to Hartney in good health and spirits. He had visited his home
in Acton only once before, about 14 years before his death.
On Monday April 26th 1910, George was that the Langham hotel in Brandon
when he suffered a heart attack. He died in the ambulance on the way to
the hospital. The funeral was attended by the Odd fellows.

he was quit young. It was in Acton that George met Annie.
Following their marriage, they lived in Acton, Dundalk and several towns

General Notes: Child - Christina Keith

Keith, Neil III - Jean Ammeter [decendants of NEIL KEITH & FLORA
McDOUGALL]
Neil was born in Acton. When he grew up, it was during the time when
there was a glowing promises and high hopes of the founders of the new
nation. It was the opening up of the west that changed the whole face of
Canadian life. Great efforts were made to link the scattered parts of
the new nation by railway. Two great builders during this time were
William MacKenzie and Donald Mann of Acton. In 1895, MacKenzie and Mann
started in the building of the Canadian Pacific. By 1900 they had
crossed the border into Erwood, Sask.
It was during these times that Neil join the railway building as a sub
contractor of MacKenzie and Mann. Neil was in Winnipeg in 1900 when he
returned home to visit his mother just before her death. We know that he
was in Erwood in 1903. In 1990 this railway line was abandoned and it
was in the process of been torn up. Later Neil moved to southern
Saskatchewan where he met his untimely death.

Weyburn - Lost on the prairies a sub-contractor has probably perished.
Word has just reached here from Ogema, one of the new towns of the
Weyburn-Lethbridge Br. of the C.P.R. that Neil Keith, a sub-contractor
has been lost on the prairies and although a diligent search has been
kept up, no trace of him can be found.
The sad feature of this case is that Mr. Keith had been in Weyburn
several days drinking heavily. A week ago last Saturday he took the
train to forward to return to his work after a drunken spree and
succeeded in reaching his camp near Ogema some time on the Monday
following, but showed signs of being temporarily demented from the
effects of the drink. He told his cook that he would go for a short walk
and the cook put on his coat to accompany him fearing he was not safe to
be left alone. About 200 yards from the camp he acted strangely and the
cook took him by the arm to try to get him to return to the camp, but
Keith broke away and told him to leave him alone. The cook then went
back to the camp, roused the men, and the gang went out to bring their
employer back to the camp, but he was never been seen since and although
the country has been searched for miles around, not a trace of the
missing man has been found. It is feared he has perished as the nights
have been very cold and but slight hope is entertained that Keith is
alive.

Missing
Contractor Found
Wolf-Mangled remains of Neil Keith discovered on the Prairies
Weyburn - Dec19 - Another chapter in the case of Neil Keith the
contractor who was reported missing some weeks ago was added last week
when blood stained garments were discovered in a vacant shack some miles
distant from the town of Forward, where the missing man was last seen.
Detectives have been working on the case since the time of Keith's
disappearance. And the clothing, while showing nothing definite, is
another clue in the case. The articles of clothing found consist of a
pair of trousers, coat and waistcoat. From the collar of the coat down
of the left side the garments are very much blood-stained showing
evidently the result of foul play. Comparatively little money was found
in the pockets and the former reports to the effect that the missing man
had a large sum of money on his person are though to be groundless. The
money said to have been in Keith's possession and on his person, it is
stated, it safely deposited in the Forward Branch of the B.N.A. Bank.
Upon the discovery of the articles, the missing man's clerk was taken in
the shack for the purpose of identifying the clothes, which he did
absolutely. The articles according to the clerk. were the property of
the man Keith. It is probably that further developments in the case will
be made at an early date as the detectives are still at work on the case.
Weyburn - Later
Parties who have arrived from Ogema stated that the body of the
unfortunate contractor has been found. Searching parties made the
gruesome discovery some four miles distant from the shack in which the
outer clothing was located. The body was covered by only a portion of
the under-wear, and was terrible mangled by wolves. All the flesh was
eaten from one arm, as was also a portion of the body and limbs. There
are no marks of violence.

By his brother Angus who left Acton several weeks ago to search.
The friends here of Neil Keith received the news last week that his body
had been found in the hills, several miles from his camp at Maryfield,
Sask. south west of Moose Jaw, when he disappeared. Mr. Keith was in
poor health and was proceeding from one camp on the line of the C.N.R. to
another. He evidently lost his way and died through exposure. His team
returned to camp alone.
Immediately upon receiving intimation of his brother's disappearance, Mr.
Angus Keith left Acton determined to search for him until he found him or
his body. It was six weeks after he left camp that his frozen remains
were discovered.
Neil Keith, was a son of the late Neil Keith Sr. and has been contracting

Woman Frozen to Death.
Supposed to have been dead sev-
eral days before she was found.
On Wednesday night, about seven o'clock, a stranger who was coming up the third line, Esquesing, to Acton, found a woman lying on the side of the road, near the farm of Mr. Alex. McDonald, frozen to death. He immediately informed Mr. McDonald of the fact, and he, accompanied by a neighbor, went and examined the corpse and thought they recognized it as a daughter of Mr. Neil Keith, a yeoman / farmer living on the 2nd line, about three miles from here. They at once proceeded to Mr. Keith's and told him about the matter, and as soon as he arrived he found it was his daughter Catharine, aged 18 years. Mr. Keith immediately took her home and sent for the coroner. The young woman had been working for Mr. McCollum, in the Scotch Block, and as her time was up about a week ago, it is supposed she left for home and instead of coming up the 2nd line, she came up the 3rd, which was more sheltered. The snow was very deep on this road, and struggling through it, it is probable that she became overcome with the cold and was frozen to death. She was found about three quarters of a mile from her own home.
A coroners' inquest will be held today.

FROZEN TO DEATH.
Young Woman Found frozen by
the Roadside.
Dead about a Week Before Being
Discovered.
[After we had gone to press and printed part of the edition last week we were informed of the discovery of a young woman, frozen to death. Our reporter immediately set out to ascertain the particulars of the case, which was inserted in the remainder of the edition. For the benefit of our western subscribers, whose papers had been mailed before we heard of the sad occurrence, we repeat the report, with the addition of such further particulars as we have since been able to obtain.]
On Wednesday night the 2nd inst., about six oclock, a young man named John Grant, who was coming up the third line, Esquesing to Acton, discovered a young woman on the side of the road, near the farm of Alexander McDonald, frozen to death. He immediately proceeded to Mr. McDonald's residence and informed him of the discovery, and he (Mr. McDonald) accompanied by a neighbour, went and examined the body and thought they recognized it as a daughter of Mr. Neil Keith who resides on the second line, about three miles from here. They at once informed Mr. Keith, who, as soon as he arrived identified the poor unfortunate, as his daughter Catherine. The young woman had been in the employ of Mr. F. McCallum, Scotch Block, and left there for home, a distance of six miles, on Tuesday, 22nd ult. It has since been learned that she went to Georgetown and was seen there and afterwards in Limehouse on Wednesday 23rd, which was the last place she was seen alive. It is supposed that she proceeded thence for home and in going along the third line, which is seldom travelled at this place during the winter, she became exhuausted and being overcome with intense cold, was frozen to death. She was found about three quarters of a mile from her own home.
The friends at once notified the coroner, who, on learning the particulars of the case, decided that it was unnecessary to hold an inquest.
The young woman was in good health, and was respected by all who were acquainted with her. She was 18 years of age. The funeral took place on Saturday afternoon, and notwithstanding the condition of the roads, after the recent storm, was one of the largest ever attended in this vicinity. The friends of the unfortunate young woman have the sympathy of the community in their sad bereavement.

"Dead About a Week"
Catherine Keith was in good health prior to her death. She was respected
by all who knew her and her funeral was large even though roads were bad
from the recent storm.
"Acton Free Press",
Catherine at the time of her death, was wearing a long dress and coat
which was the dress of the day. As it became coated with snow, it lead
her to exhaustion. As she was near a homestead, she cried out in the
night but the neighbor thought that it was a fox crying in the night.
Catherine had been to Georgetown on Tuesday, seen at Limehouse on
Wednesday before returning home. She was found by John Grant, a
traveller. An Inquest was not held, it was later decided.
Catherine was buried in the Pioneer Cemetery in Acton, Halton Co., Ontario, Canada. Her
tombstone is still there and her name was also inscribed on her parents
tombstone in the Fairview Cemetery, Acton, Halton Co., Ontario - Canada.

DIED fatally shot by John T. Lyon, wife's stepfather
SCHU grad of Univ of VA
Wqass in info-Sally Webster 12 Sep 2002 <swebster@esf.edu>
Family Legand has it that Mr. Mabry was an abusive husbvand, who beat his young wife one time too many when one day she didn't have a hot meal on the table when he came home in the middle of the day. He may have well been a brilliant lawyer, young as he was, but he must have had a hot temper. The laws of the day didn't protect women against this kind of domestic abuse, and so, Mr. Lyon took the law into his own hands.
