Tulane). He practiced law in St. John the Baptist Parish and settled in
Port Allen. His widow was Martha Pourciau. They had 3 daughters: Rita
LeBlanc Miles, Ethel LeBlanc Bogan, and Virgie LeBlanc Nissam.

er William Hastings' death, a ward of Sir John Don. Elizabeth
Trussell, grand-daughter of Sir John Don and Elizabeth Hastings, was the g
randmother of Edward de
Vere, 17th Earl of Oxford (McFarlane 3, 9, 56-7). Interestingly, portrai
ts of Sir John Don and Eliza-
beth Hastings and their eldest daughter Anne still survive in the Chatswor
th altarpiece in the National
Gallery in London. The altarpiece, painted by Hans Memling, shows Sir Jo
hn Don and his wife Eliza-
beth wearing the "Yorkist livery collar, with Edward IV's personal badg
e, the lion of March, as a pen-
dant" (McFarlane 1-2, 4). Onthe pillars in the background are the Don a
nd Hastings coats of arms.
In summary, the projected marriage between Edward de Vere, 17th Earl of Ox
ford, and one of the sisters of Henry, 3rd Earl of Huntingdon was, in a
ll probability, a recognition and reinforcement of Hastings family ties wh
ich dated back tothe Wars of the Roses.
General Notes: Child - Edward Dunn
Edward Don (1482?-1552), eldest son and heir of Sir John Don, died at t
he approximate age of sev-
enty in 1552 (McFarlane 8-9, 53), when his sister Margaret's great-grands
on Edward de Vere, 17th Earl of Oxford, was about two years old. Sir Edwa
rd held a number of offices during the early part of the reign of Henry VI
II, serving as a gentleman-usher of the King's chamber, as sheriff of Bedf
ordshire and Buckinghamshire and, in 1521, as a member of the retinue of H
enry VIII at Calais (McFarlane 53, 55; Newton Dunn 16). As Sir John Don
's heir, he inherited several properties, including manors at Horsenden a
nd Saunderton in Buckinghamshire. Four and a half centuries later, the man
or houses owned by the Dons are gone, but the two small churches which ser
ved them still stand. About 1507, Sir Edward married Anne, daughter of S
ir John Verneyof Middle Claydon, Buckinghamshire (McFarlane 53-4). In a p
edigree of the Verney family given in the Visitation of Hertfordshire, S
ir John Verney is saidto have been cup-bearer to Queen Anne Boleyn (23
). His son, Sir Ralph Verney-- Sir
Edward Don’s brother-in-law -- was chamberlain to Princess (later Queen) M
ary (Lipscomb 178).
Sir Edward Don and Anne Verney had only one child, adaughter Elizabeth (
d. before 1551), who
married Sir Thomas Jones (d.1559) of Abermarlais,sheriff of Carmarthen a
nd Cardigan. Sir Thomas
Jones and Elizabeth Don had two daughters, Anne and Frances (Newton Dunn 1
6). Anne Don married
John Cotton of Whittington, Gloucestershire and had three sons -- Richar
d, William and Ralph (only Ralph appears to have had an heir, Don Cotto
n, who, in a pedigree of 1623, is shown as having two daughters) (Macle
an 45-6). Frances Don married Ralph Lee of Saunderton, and had a daughte
r, Anne (who married George Aisby of Harefield, Middlesex), and a son, Edw
ard Don (or Dunn) Lee (d.1598), who married Anne, daughter of Richard Heyw
ood (Meyrick 199). Edward Don Lee was sheriff of Carmarthen from 1588-15
94 and a Member of Parliament during the years 1584-1587 (Newton Dunn 17
). In the latter capacity, he is chiefly remembered for his presentati
on of John Penry's petition to the Parliament of 1586-87 (Neale 153). Aye
ar later, John Penry found a permanent placein history by acting as manag
er of the secret press which printed the Marprelate tracts, a transgressi
on which doubtless played a large part in his execution in 1593, althou
gh he was hanged for treason on other grounds. This link with the Marprela
te tracts makes Edward Don Lee's relationship with his fellow Welshm
an of considerable in- terest, particularly when it is realized that Sir E
dward Don's great-niece, Grisold Hughes (d.1613), was, at the time of t
he printing of the first of the Marprelate tracts in 1588, the wife of Edw
ard Neville (d.1589), an uncle of Job Throckmorton, another individual int
imately connected with the management of the Marprelate press (Carlson 9

As a young man he came from Gloucester, Mass to work in Samuel Donnell's tavern, and in 1708 married the boss's daughter.
Caleb probably did not settle in York. In his will written in 1735, he is of Boston, Innholder, and all propertry he left was in Gloucester. No mention of York in his wills. His son, Gustavus was probably the first Norwood to actually settle in York.
Caleb, when in York, lived on the road leading to Stage Neck, York Harbor, the oldest road in York. Sam Donnell built a tavern and garrison, still standing in 1998.
