1 M William De Molyneux
Born: 1069 Baptized: Died: Buried:
General Notes: Husband - Robert De Molyneux
According to tradition, which cannot be vouched for,
he was the son of
Abelard, a Spanish priest of noble family and
Heloise, a French nun. But
there is to be found among the Bishops of Hereford,
the name of Robert
de Meulin, Priory of Llanthony, who was consecrated
22 Dec., 1163, Ob.
27 Feb, 1166-7, therefore it would not be surprising if
the Robert de
Meulin here named were not the son mentioned and
the ancestor of the
House of Molyneux. As the story goes, Heloise left
the cloister, going to
Moulin, where Robert was born. She then returned to
the Cloister, where
by her pennance and piety she became the Abbess
of the Cloister. This
illicit love was a scandal to the Church, and after the
birth of the son
Robert they were privately married. The union did
not appease the wrath
of the canon, and Abelard was expelled from the
priesthood and became
one of the founders of the Oblates, a society still
existing in the
Caucasian Mountains. (Tradition also tells us that
from this order of
Priests often comes the call to the House of
Molyneux, and when this call
comes, the one called leaves all to obey.) Robert
Molyneux, born in
Mouline, known as "The Comte de Meulin", married
.............."
Note: Robert had two sons, William and Vivian.

From "Molyneux Genealogy" by Nellie Zada Rice
Molyneux (1904) -
G929.2 M31m - held by the Indiana State Library :
"Robert de Molyneux,
son of Adam de Molyneux and Annota de Garnett,
married temp. King John,
"The Lackland" Beatrix de Villiers, dau. and heiress
of Sir Robert de
Villiers, son of Richard de Villiers, a crusader under
Edward I of Little.
Robert aquired the estate of Little Crosby, Co.
Lancaster.
Beatrix de Villiers, ambitious to be a queen, in love
with King John,
loath to leave him, but by him (King John) given in
marriage to one of his
barons (temp.) Sir Robert Molyneux. She did bitterly
curse the House of
Molyneux and all that bear the name, calling down
maledictions of
misery, blasting their loves with tragedy. Descending
from the issue of
this marriage are the Earls of Sefton, Ireland,
Teversall, and
Nottinghamshire."

Richard Fitzgilbert de Brionne
TITLE: Lord of Bienfaite & Orbec in Normandy Lord of Clare & Tonbridge
He tried to consolidate gains made by his father in Cardigan but was killed in an ambush in 1136. Soon after his lordship was recovered by the Welsh.
Richard was kinsman and companion of William the Conqueror. He founded the house of Clare during the conquest and played a major role in suppressing the revolt of 1075.
Richard was a knight who served in the Norman invasion of England in 1066. Richard was regent of England jointly with William de Warenne during the Conqueror's absence in 1075 and served in other capacities for the King. King William granted him one of the largest fiefs in the territorial settlement. The lordship centered on Clare and Suffolk. William arranged for Richard's marriage to Rohese, sister of Walter Giffard, and her dowry consisting of lands in Huntingdon and Hertford became absorbed in family inheritance.

m. Hawise de Valois (dau of Raoul III 'the Great', Count de Valois, d'Amie

1. Ralph de Mortimer (a 1066, 1104)
m1. Melisande or Milicent (d before 30.03.1088)
Following BE1883, which shows Ralph as having only Melisande (Milicen
t) as a wife, we show her as mother of all of Ralph' s children. However T
CP, whilst confirming Hawise's mother as Melisande, suggests that Willi
am may have been illegitimate and leaves open who was mother of Hugh. BE18
83 shows also another son,Robert, ancestor of the Mortimers of Richard
's Castle, but we show him on 'Mortimer02'.
A. Hugh de Mortimer (d c1149)
TCP and BE1883 disagree over the next few generations. BE1883 shows Hu

2. Isabel, sister of Hugh de Ferrers of Oakham) who was followed by his s
on Hugh (who m. Annora de Braose) who was followed by his half-brother Ral

George Neville
(c. 1432 - 8 June 1476), archbishop of York and chancellor of England, was the youngest son of Richard Neville, 5th Earl of Salisbury, and Alice Neville, 5th Countess of Salisbury. He was the brother of Richard Neville, 16th Earl of Warwick, known as the "Kingmaker."
Life
Neville was educated at Balliol College, Oxford, and was from his childhood destined for the clerical profession, in which through the great influence of his family he obtained rapid advancement, becoming bishop of Exeter in 1458. He was provided to the see on 4 February 1458 and consecrated on 3 December 1458. From this time forward Neville took a prominent part in the troubled politics of the period. He was present with his brother Warwick at the battle of Northampton in July 1460, immediately after which the great seal was committed to his keeping.
Neville took part in the proclamation of Edward of York as king, who confirmed his appointment as chancellor. In 1463 he was employed on a diplomatic mission in France; and in 1464, after taking part in negotiation with the Scots, Neville became archbishop of York on 15 March 1465.
Neville's enthronement as Archbishop of York took place in Cawood Castle in September 1465 and to demonstrate the riches and power of his family, twenty eight peers, fifty nine knights, ten abbots, seven bishops, numerous lawyers, clergy, esquires, and ladies, together with their attendants and servants came to the castle. Together with the archbishop's own family and servants there were about 2500 to be fed at each meal. They consumed 4000 pigeons and 4000 crays, 2000 chickens, 204 cranes, 104 peacocks, 100 dozen quails, 400 swans and 400 herons, 113 oxen, six wild bulls, 608 pikes and bream, 12 porpoises and seals, 1000 sheep, 304 calves, 2000 pigs, 1000 capons, 400 plovers, 200 dozen of a bird called 'rees' (i.e. ruffs), 4000 mallard and teals, 204 kids and 204 bitterns, 200 pheasants, 500 partridges, 400 woodcocks, 100 curlews, 1000 egrets, over 500 stags, bucks and roes, 4000 cold and 1500 hot venison pies, 4000 dishes of jelly, 4000 baked tarts, 2000 hot custards with a proportionate quantity of bread, sugared delicacies and cakes, and 300 tuns of ale and 100 tuns of wine. As well as indicating the power of the Nevilles the menu gives a valuable insight into 15th century English avifauna.
During the next few years Neville as well as his brothers fell into disfavour with Edward IV; and in June 1467 Edward took back the Great Seal in person as punishment for Neville's obstruction of the royal plans. In 1469, after a successful rising in Yorkshire secretly fermented by Warwick, the king fell into the hands of the archbishop, by whom, after a short imprisonment, he was permitted to escape.
When Warwick was in turn defeated by the king's forces at Stamford in 1470, Archbishop Neville took the oath of allegiance to Edward, but during the short Lancastrian restoration which compelled Edward to cross to Holland, Neville acted as chancellor to Henry VI; and when the tide once more turned he again trimmed his sails to the favouring breeze, making his peace with Edward, now again triumphant, by surrendering Henry into his hands. The archbishop for a short time shared Henry's captivity in the Tower.
Having been pardoned in April 1471, Neville was re-arrested on 25 April 1472 on a charge of treason and secretly conveyed to France, where he remained a prisoner at the castle of Hammes near Calais until November of 1474, when he returned to England; he died in the following year, on the 8th of June 1476. Archbishop Neville was a respectable scholar; and he was a considerable benefactor of the university of Oxford and especially of Balliol College. He seems also to have shown an interest in learning Greek and to have commissioned at least one Greek manuscript.

John Neville, 1st Marquess of Montagu
(c. 1431 - 14 April 1471) was a Yorkist leader in the Wars of the Roses, best-known for eliminating Lancastrian resistance in the north of England during the early part of the reign of Edward IV of England.
Montagu was a younger son of Richard Neville, 5th Earl of Salisbury and Alice Montagu, Countess of Salisbury, and a brother of Warwick the Kingmaker.
He fought at the Battle of Blore Heath and was captured and imprisoned by the Lancastrians. After the Yorkist victory at Northampton he was released, but was captured again at the Second Battle of St Albans.
Following his second release from imprisonment, he led the Yorkist forces in the north of England, defeating the Lancastrians at Hedgeley Moor and again at Hexham (both 1464).
In reward for driving out the Lancastrians, Montagu was created Earl of Northumberland. This title had long been held by the Percy family, but they were in disgrace. However, when Henry Percy was rehabilitated in 1470, Montagu was forced to give up the earldom and many important offices in favour of his former foe.
He was in compensation created Marquess of Montagu, but without suitable estates to support such a dignity. Now set against Edward IV, he joined his brother Warwick the Kingmaker in the restoration of Henry VI. Montagu returned to high office in the north, but was killed at the Battle of Barnet.

General Notes: Child - Catherine Lady Neville
Katherine Neville Baroness Hastings
(1442- before 22 November 1503), was a noblewoman and a member of the powerful Neville family of northern England. She was the third eldest daughter of Richard Neville, 5th Earl of Salisbury, and the sister of military commander Richard Neville, 16th Earl of Warwick, known to history as Warwick the Kingmaker.
She was married twice. By her first husband William Bonville, 6th Baron Harington of Aldingham, she was the mother of Cecily Bonville, who became the wealthiest heiress in England following the deaths in the Battle of Wakefield of Katherine's husband, her father-in-law; and less than two months later, of William Bonville's grandfather, William Bonville, 1st Baron Bonville who was executed following the Yorkist defeat at the Second Battle of St Albans. Katherine's second husband was William Hastings, 1st Baron Hastings, a powerful noble who was beheaded in 1483 by the order of King Richard III, who placed Katherine directly under his protection.
Family
Lady Katherine Neville was born in 1442, one of the ten children of Richard Neville, 5th Earl of Salisbury and Alice Montacute, suo jure 5th Countess of Salisbury. Her eldest brother was Richard Neville, 16th Earl of Warwick, 6th Earl of Salisbury, also known as Warwick the Kingmaker. He was the most important peer in the realm, and one of the principal protagonists in the Wars of the Roses. Her aunt was Cecily Neville, Duchess of York, mother of future kings Edward IV and Richard III. Her paternal grandparents were Ralph Neville, 1st Earl of Westmorland and Joan Beaufort, Countess of Westmoreland, a daughter of John of Gaunt by his third wife, Katherine Swynford. Her maternal grandparents were Thomas Montacute, 4th Earl of Salisbury and Lady Eleanor Holland.
Marriages and issue
In 1458, Lady Katherine married her first husband, William Bonville, 6th Baron Harington of Aldingham. The Bonvilles were, like her own family, staunch adherents of the House of York. The marriage produced one daughter:
· Cecily Bonville, suo jure 2nd Baroness Bonville, 7th Baroness Harington of Aldingham (c.30 June 1460- 12 May 1529), married on 18 July 1474, Thomas Grey, 1st Marquess of Dorset, by whom she had fourteen children.
Katherine's husband William along with his father, William Bonville, was executed on the battlefield after the Yorkist defeat at the Battle of Wakefield on 30 December 1460 by the command of Queen consort Margaret of Anjou who headed the Lancastrian faction. Both her father and first cousin, Edmund, Earl of Rutland were also executed after the battle. Less than two months later, William's grandfather, William Bonville, 1st Baron Bonville was decapitated on 18 February 1461 in an act of vengeance by Queen Margaret who ordered his execution after the Yorkists suffered another defeat at the Second Battle of St Albans on the previous day.[1] Katherine's six-months old daughter succeeded to the titles of suo jure 2nd Baroness Bonville and suo jure 7th Baroness Harington of Aldingham, and inherited the vast Bonville and Harington estates, becoming the wealthiest heiress in England.
Katherine was left a widow at the age of eighteen. She did not, however, remain a widow for long; shortly before 6 February 1462[2] her brother Richard Neville, Earl of Warwick, arranged a marriage between her and William Hastings, 1st Baron Hastings, a powerful noble, and a close friend and Lord Chamberlain of Edward IV who had replaced Henry VI as king of England on 4 March 1461 when he was proclaimed king in London. The proclamation was followed by the decisive Yorkist victory on 29 March at the Battle of Towton in which Edward had served as commander of the Yorkist army and crushingly defeated the Lancastrians.
In addition to her own dowry, Katherine brought the wardship of her daughter Cecily to her new husband.[3] Together William Hastings and Katherine had six children:[4]
· Richard Hastings (1464- 1465)
· William Hastings (1466- 1466)
· Sir Edward Hastings, 2nd Baron Hastings (26 November 1466- 8 November 1506), married Mary Hungerford, Baroness Botreaux, by whom he had issue.
· Richard Hastings (born 1468)
· William Hastings (1470- after 1540), married Jane Sheffield
· Anne Hastings (c.1471- 1520), married before 27 June 1481 as his first wife George Talbot, 4th Earl of Shrewsbury, by whom she had eleven children, including Mary Talbot, Countess of Northumberland, and Elizabeth Talbot, Baroness Dacre, mother of Lady Magdalen Dacre.
Execution of William Hastings
On 9 April 1483, King Edward died; his son Edward V and kingdom were placed under the guardianship of his youngest brother Richard, Duke of Gloucester who was made Lord Protector of England. It was Katherine's husband William Hastings who advised Richard to take the young King Edward V into protective custody immediately following the death of Edward IV.[5]
It was about this time that Katherine's husband became the lover of Jane Shore, a former mistress of both the late King Edward and her son-in-law, Thomas Grey, Marquess of Dorset.[6] The latter had married her eldest daughter, Cecily in 1474. Hastings had confided to his mistress his concern that his considerable power and influence was on the wane under the protectorate of Richard. She encouraged him to enter into a conspiracy with the Woodville family against the Lord Protector. Richard, upon discovering Hastings' treachery ordered his immediate execution, which took place on 13 June 1483 at the Tower of London. Several weeks later, Richard sealed an indenture, swearing to take Katherine directly under his protection and to "secure for her the enjoyment of her husband's lands, goods, privileges, and the custody not only of their heir until the boy came of age but also the wardship of the young Earl of Shrewsbury who was married to their daughter, Anne". Richard assured Katherine that Hastings would never be attainted, and that she would be defended against any attempt by intimidation or fraud to deprive her of her rights.[7]
Shortly after Hastings' death, on 22 June, Richard proclaimed himself King of England which was supported by an Act of Parliament known as Titulus Regius that declared his nephew King Edward V and his siblings illegitimate. He was crowned king on 6 July.
Katherine never remarried. She herself died on an unknown date before 22 November 1503.
