She was born Nov. 23, 1912, in Brewer, the daughter of Ralph W. and Christine (Hewes) Arey. Edith is survived by one son, James A. Curtis and his wife, Lois, of Orrington; five grandchildren, Ami Norton of Gouldsboro, Robert Norton and Anita Demmons, both of Orrington, Jody Norton of Penobscot, and a special granddaughter, Cindy Gray of Levant; five great-grandchildren, Kristen Bouchard, Courtney Demmons, Jeremy Holmes, Leighanna Norton and Nicholas Norton; four sisters, Daphne MacNevin of Glenburn, Evelyn Rist, Vernice Sucy and Eleanor Young and her husband, James "Hoofer" Young, all of Brewer; 12 nieces; and 12 nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, Edith was predeceased by a son, Ronald Curtis; four sisters, Frances Carnahan, Cordelia Ranks, Annie Sullivan, Marjorie Campbell; and one brother, Sidney Arey. BREWER – Evelyn A. Rist, 87, wife of the late Robert Rist, died April 18, 2005, at a Bangor health care center. She was born May 19, 1917, in Brewer, the daughter of Ralph and Christine (Hewes) Arey. A devoted wife and mother, Evelyn worked in production for the Nestle Corp. in Fulton, N.Y., for 20 years, retiring at the age of 70. She was a communicant of St. Teresa's Catholic Church in Brewer, and enjoyed times spent with her family especially her Sunday afternoon card games with her sister. Surviving are three children, Christine Regan and her husband, Charles, of Lakeland, Fla., Rosalie White of Bangor, and Vernice Becker and her husband, Martin, of Syracuse, N.Y.; 11 grandchildren, Debra Regan, Sandra DePolo and her husband, David, Charles Regan III and his wife, Sandra, Robert Regan, Donald White II and his wife, Karen, Shawna Bouchard and her husband, Tim, William R. White and his wife, Amy, Ronald Stuter and his wife, Becky, Shannon Bove, Kristy Stuter and Sharon Paninski and her husband, Doug; 21 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Vernice Sucy of Brewer and Eleanor Young and her husband, James, of Brewer; many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by one son, Robert Rist Jr.; one brother, Sidney Arey; and six sisters, Frances Carnahan, Annie Sullivan, Marjorie Campbell, Cordelia Ranks, Edith Curtis and Daphne MacNevin. Melvin Franklin Arey was born in Hampden, Maine, on January 19, 1844. He joined the 22nd Maine Infantry in 1862 in the middle of his college education. After leaving the army in 1863, he returned to school and graduated with a B. A. in 1867 and an M. A. in 1870, both from Bowdoin College . On May 16, 1869, Melvin Arey married Louise H. Smith also of Hampden, Maine.
Melvin Arey taught in Maine and New Hampshire public and private schools. In 1873, he moved to Iowa where he was Superintendent of Schools in Cedar Falls until 1877. He was then Superintendent of Schools in Fort Dodge, from 1877 to 1890.
In 1890, Professor Arey was asked to join the faculty of the Iowa State Normal School. He became a Professor of Natural Sciences, and was head of the department from 1909 until he retired in 1917. Professor Arey was an integral part of the early faculty, leaving his mark in many ways on the school. In order to get students more involved in natural sciences, Professor Arey founded the Natural History Association, an organization in which students and alumni could discuss or present findings on natural sciences.
In 1893, Dr. Arey went on an expedition to the Bahamas, where he studied natural sciences and returned with specimens and new and interesting findings for his students. In 1917, when he retired from regular teaching duties, Professor Arey was put in charge of the school's natural history museum. He was curator from 1917 to 1928. He acquired a wide variety of information, artifacts, and specimens for the museum.
Professor Arey was also highly involved outside the college. He was a city councilman for the 4th Ward in Cedar Falls from 1897 to 1915. He also served as a trustee of the city hospital, a fellow of the American Academy for the Advancement of Science, and a life member of the Iowa Academy of Science, of which he was president in 1905. He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Psi Upsilon, the Grand Army of the Republic, the Central Association of Science and Mathematics, and the Iowa Forestry and Conservation Association.
Professor Arey was a respected and valued faculty member and an active citizen in the Cedar Falls community. Three of his children, Amy, Ethel, and Lester, served on the college faculty.
Professor Arey died on March 20, 1931.

Elizabeth Goss and the late Sidney Phillip Arey. She was known to the family as "Suzi," and to her many friends as "Syd." She traveled extensively and was educated in Hawaii, California, North Carolina, and Brewer. She fought her cancer bravely for four years and lost the battle, but gained eternal life with her Lord. She enjoyed books, the Patriots, and the Red Sox. She is survived by her mother, M. Elizabeth Goss and her stepfather, Kenneth H. Goss; her beloved daughter, Korin Green and the love of her life, Bob Bailey; sister, Dawn M. Arey and her fianc?, Keith Filtz; son, Aaron J. Lobley and his wife, Bree and three children, Apryl, Nicole, and Aaron; sister, Kristina Clark and her husband, Tim and two children, Garrett and Paula; brother, Robert Arey and his wife, Ellen and his daughter, Alexx; one uncle, Owen Arey; four cousins, Owen and Dale Arey, James Smith, and Terri Dorr; and many friends, especially Connie White. BREWER – Evelyn A. Rist, 87, wife of the late Robert Rist, died April 18, 2005, at a Bangor health care center. She was born May 19, 1917, in Brewer, the daughter of Ralph and Christine (Hewes) Arey. A devoted wife and mother, Evelyn worked in production for the Nestle Corp. in Fulton, N.Y., for 20 years, retiring at the age of 70. She was a communicant of St. Teresa's Catholic Church in Brewer, and enjoyed times spent with her family especially her Sunday afternoon card games with her sister. Surviving are three children, Christine Regan and her husband, Charles, of Lakeland, Fla., Rosalie White of Bangor, and Vernice Becker and her husband, Martin, of Syracuse, N.Y.; 11 grandchildren, Debra Regan, Sandra DePolo and her husband, David, Charles Regan III and his wife, Sandra, Robert Regan, Donald White II and his wife, Karen, Shawna Bouchard and her husband, Tim, William R. BANGOR – Margaret L. Libby, 90, died Dec. 5, 2004, at her home in Bangor. She was born April 12, 1914, in Brewer the daughter of John and Madeline (Fraser) Walsh. Margaret was predeceased by her husband, Evans C. Libby; and her first husband, Sidney Arey. She is survived by one son, Owen C. Arey of Bangor; four grandchildren, Owen Arey II of Milford, Dale J. Arey of Florida, James R. Arey of Orrington and Terri L. Dorr of Millinocket; eight great-grandchildren, one sister-in-law, Sally Walsh of Old Orchard Beach; one cousin, Barbara Walsh of Brewer. She will be remembered by a special friend, Johanna Sewall of Bangor. Services will be private. Arrangements by Kiley Funeral Home, 69 State St., Brewer.

HAMPDEN and BANGOR Sydney Phyllis (Arey) Sayce, 46, went to be with her reward May 7, 2007, at a local hospital. She was born Nov. 8, 1960, in Oahu, in the Hawaiian Islands, the daughter of M. Elizabeth Goss and the late Sidney Phillip Arey. She was known to the family as "Suzi," and to her many friends as "Syd." She traveled extensively and was educated in Hawaii, California, North Carolina, and Brewer. She fought her cancer bravely for four years and lost the battle, but gained eternal life with her Lord. She enjoyed books, the Patriots, and the Red Sox. She is survived by her mother, M. Elizabeth Goss and her stepfather, Kenneth H. Goss; her beloved daughter, Korin Green and the love of her life, Bob Bailey; sister, Dawn M. Arey and her fianc?, Keith Filtz; son, Aaron J. Lobley and his wife, Bree and three children, Apryl, Nicole, and Aaron; sister, Kristina Clark and her husband, Tim and two children, Garrett and Paula; brother, Robert Arey and his wife, Ellen and his daughter, Alexx; one uncle, Owen Arey; four cousins, Owen and Dale Arey, James Smith, and Terri Dorr; and many friends, especially Connie White. She was predeceased by her father, Sidney P. Arey; and her maternal and paternal grandparents. A celebration of her life will be held 7 p.m. Friday, May 11, at Abundant Life Church, 1404 Broadway, Bangor, 945-5577. Casual dress preferred, jeans are OK. Flowers may be sent to the church.
