chaplain to the Earl of Hertford. His religious views chan g in g, he le ft the
clergy and probably came to Boston with Sir Henry Vane i n 1 635, a nd in 1 638 was
at Newport at the southerly end of Rhode Island. Many of G o vernor Vane's
friends were banished from Boston in 1637 because of the i r opinions b ei ng at
variance with those of the Puritan element in control of t h e govern me nt of
Massachusetts Bay Colony. John Peckham was an active memb e r of the Bap ti st

Perhaps a major reason for John's migration to America w a s becau se ma ny of his family were royalists, while he w a s a reformer. JOHN PECKHAM was born in England and baptized Apr. 8. 1595 . In 16 34 he w as chaplain to the Earl of Hertford and ther e is no doubt but th at as cha plain to that nobleman he mad e the acquaintance of Sir Henry Va ne, the yo unger. There ca n be little doubt that the extreme theologic al vie ws of Si r Henry Vane became the convincing argument that turned J oh n Pec kham from his allegiance to the Church of England. The se mo re or less ext reme views may be described in the langu age of that d ay as those of a Bap tist Lollard. John Peckha m was in Rhode Island in 16 38. He is suppos ed to have com e to Boston in 1634 with Sir Henry Van e. In Bosto n, he me t Mary Clarke, who had accompanied her brother, Dr. J ohn Cl ark e, to Boston. While John Peckham's name does not appea r in t he list of th ose disarmed in Boston, nor among the fo llowers of Wheelwri ght, nor o ne of the signers of the Ports mouth Covenant, yet he must ha ve been o ne of the party know n as the Ann Hutchinson Party, who found ed a settleme nt o n the north end of Rhode Island, the town of Portsmout h. Jo hn Peckh am died in 1681 and Mary Clarke in 1648.

Name: Henry PECKHAM
Sex: M
Birth: 1525 in SONNING, OXFORDSHIRE, ENGLAND
Note: Alias: /Edward/ !Initial source: Two family group sheets of Henry or Edw ard Peckham, 1550, are in the Family Organization papers. They are from the FG RA collection of the Family History Library, Salt Lake City, Utah. One was submitted by Laura B. Allen, 137 So. Summit Ave. Prescott, California. Her source: Peckham Gen. pgs 161-166; B13 D1. The former is a book by Stephen Farnum Peckham, 1922, (FHL 1018879) the latter is "The Van Buren Family" now FHL 929.27 3 Va276p. The other FGRA sheet was submitted by Mary F. McSpadden Chase, 4122 Fountain St., Long Beach, Calif. Her sources: Peckham Gen. pgs 161-166; Register of Boxgrove, Eng.; Archives. The birth for Edward on both sheets was 1550, the first said "of Sonning, Berkshire, Eng.", son of John Peckham, and the other said "of Boxgrove, Sussex, Eng.", son of John or George Peckham and Elizabeth Brane or Brand. Only the second sheet had a death date, 1 Nov 1616, East Hampnett, Sussex, Eng. The wife on both sheets was Grace Sanbourne (see notes for her) The first sheet had seven children, no Clement nor Mabel, the first two born at Sonning and the rest christened at East Hampnet. The second had nine, the first three "of Sonning" and the rest christened at East Hampnet, except for Thomas, only a year given for him. Both had the first one born abt 1570 . However, that would make him only 20 years old when his first child was born . There is a copy in the Davenport Family Organization papers of a page taken from "Parochial Topography of the Rape of Chichester, Western Division of the County of Sussex". It has a pedigree titled "Peckham. Visit. 1634. C. 27, p . 60." It starts with John, "descended from the family of Peckham, of Yaldham, in Kent" and shows two sons, John, only the name, no wife nor dates, and Richard, "of Lordington, ancestor of the family of Peckham, of Little Green, in
Compton." No wife nor children shown for Richard. It shows John's son Edward "Lord of the Manor of East Hamptnett, 27 Eliz. 1585", his wife "Grace, daughter o f --- Samborne of co. Berks." and the only child shown for him was Henry, who married Elizabeth Badger. It says that Edward Peckham purchased East Hampnett in 1584 and it was held by his descendants until 1682 when it was sold to Sir George Jeffereys (afterwards Lord Chancellor). A note at the bottom of the page reads: MSS. B. From the Court Rolls. "1584, Mich. 30. The homage present the true bounds of their common, upon their othes. 'From Denfield Gate down between two butts, whereof Norton made one, and East Hampnett the other; and so down a green way to the bottom, where the B'ps common lyeth on the south side of the same bottom; and then along said bottom, in a green way, to Green Lane End, where Eartham Common lyeth on the east side, and where an ancient bound is between three lordships, viz. Eartham, Halfnaked, and East Hampnett, where a man is buried that did hang himself; and from thence back again S. W. to an oke, and from thence to the place where the stem of a beech stood, and so from thence to Tyne-wood Eng, and from thence to the S. W. end of Cock-street Corner '." "Peckham Genealogy", by Stephen F. Peckham, 1922, gives information about Henry alias Edward Peckham on page 161-157 and a list of seven children on page 167. These are the same as given on the first FGRA sheet. It also has several pedigree charts. The one on page 192, "Peckhams of West Sussex", starts with John (11) shown as the grandfather of this Edward, and gives his son John (1 2), his son Edward (13) and his family, the family of his son Henry (14),
including John (15) who emigrated to New England, but gives only the family of John's brother Henry (15) and his son John (16). About Edward, it says "purchased manor of Easthampnet 1584; referred to in Sambourne Pedigree (Visitation of 1574) as "Henry Peckham alias Edwood; alive in 1595. (Believed to be son of Henry (12); see Pedigree 4. S. F. P.)." It sa
