ISABELLE
(PELLETIER) CHARETTE HAVERHILL, Mass. and DAIGLE - Isabelle (Pelletier) Charette, 91, of Newburyport, Mass., died peacefully Thursday evening, April 13, 2006, at Kenoza Manor Convalescent Home in Haverhill, Mass., with her family by her side. Isabelle was born March 17, 1915, in Daigle, the daughter of the late Edward and Alice (Voisine) Pelletier. She lived in Fort Kent with her husband, George Charette, for most of her life where they owned and operated a small country store. Isabelle was an avid knitter and a kind, gentle spirit who touched many of those blessed to have known her. She leaves behind her only child, Odette (Charette) Carr and son-in-law, Everett of Newburyport Mass.; and her two beloved grandsons, Geno Sumner, who resides in Manchester, Mass. and Jarid Sumner, who resides in Queens, N.Y. She is also survived by her only living sibling, Adrien Pelletier from Wethersfield, Conn.; as well as many nieces and nephews. Isabelle was predeceased by her husband, George in 1994; her sisters, Matte and Theresa; and her brothers, Ronald, Rosaire and Alyre. Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Monday and 8 a.m. Tuesday until time of service, at the Daigle & Nadeau Funeral Home, Fort Kent. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Tuesday at the St Louis Catholic Church, Fort Kent. Spring burial will be May 11, in the parish cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the Kenoza Manor Residence Fund, 190 North Ave., Haverhill, MA 01830. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

No More,' But Live In Thankfulness That She Was." - Hebrew Proverb JULIETTE M. DUPREY EAST MILLINOCKET - Juliette M. Duprey, 82, wife of the late Guy J. Duprey Sr., started her eternal journey Saturday, Nov. 25, 2006, at a Millinocket hospital, after a long illness. She was born June 11, 1924, in Fort Kent, the daughter of Phoedime and Isabelle (Charette) Voisine. Juliette grew up on a farm in Fort Kent. When she was 13 years old, her mother passed away, leaving the family with several young children. Juliette quit school at that time and with the help of her brothers and sisters, worked on the farm and helped raise the younger children. As a young adult, she moved to Lewiston and worked in the textile industry. In the early 1950s, Juliette moved to East Millinocket and worked at Bossie's Boarding Home, Millinocket. While living in East Millinocket, she met Guy Duprey and in 1953, they were married and lived in East Millinocket for the remainder of their lives. Juliette was a communicant of St. Peter's Catholic Church and was active with the St. Ann's Circle of the Daughters of Isabella. She is survived by two sons, Guy Duprey Jr. and John E. Crain of Townsend, Mass.; two daughters-in-law, Cathy Duprey and Janice Crain; five grandchildren, Jennifer L. Duprey and Heather M. Duprey of Medway, Bryan J. Duprey and his wife, Vanessa, of Millinocket, John Crain Jr. and his wife, Sherrie, of Manchester, N.H., and Jason Crain of Debary, Fla.; two great-grand-children, Tyler and Sarah of Manchester, N.H.; a brother, Hubert "Gil" Voisine and his wife, Theresa, of Millinocket; many nieces, nephews, cousins and special friends. In addition to her husband, Juliette was predeceased by her siblings, Patrick, Alfred and Emile Voisine, Antoinette Albert, Rene Bernier, Leo King, Zenon Voisine, Phillip Voisine, Mamie King, Irene Thibodeau and Yvonne Voisine-Bushey. Friends are invited to visit with the family 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Monday at Bouchard - Lamson Funeral Home, 17 Western Ave., East Millinocket, where a prayer service will performed 7:30 p.m. by the St. Ann's Circle of the Daughters of Isabella. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 28, at St. Peter's Catholic Church, 58 Cedar St., East Millinocket, with the Rev. Joel Cyr, pastor, presiding. MAMIE M. KING
MILLINOCKET - Mamie M. (Bernier) King, 88, passed away peacefully at home May 7, 2003. Mamie was born in Fort Kent on May 27, 1914, the daughter of Isabelle (Charette) and Dumas Bernier. She worked for many years as a cook at the Abol logging camps. After she raised her family, she did laundry for the Great Northern Paper First Aid. She retired in 1998 at age 84 from Great Northern Paper as their oldest employee. Mamie was predeceased by her husband of 53 years, Leo V. King; her eldest son, Leo Jr., and five children at birth. Mamie is survived by her children, June Pineau and husband, Leonard, of Sherman, Jackie Heiser and husband, Dutch, of East Holden, Rene King and wife, Lorena, Judy Ingersoll and her fianc?, David Gordon, all of Millinocket, John King of Bangor, James King and wife, Cathy, of East Millinocket; her sisters, Irene Thibodeau and Juliette Duprey, both of East Millinocket; and her brother, Hubert "Gil" Voisine and wife, Theresa, of Millinocket. The greatest joy of Mamie's life was her 15 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. All were very special to her. She also leaves behind many nieces and nephews, and a very special friend and cousin, Alma Cyr. In their later years, they spent more time talking on the phone than teenagers. Mamie always had treats for all her granddogs. Mamie was always a hard worker, a trait she passed on to all her children, and she took great pride in her gardens which she would tend endlessly. She was proud to be the final person to leave Skunk Hollow. Her family was her greatest joy. She took great pride in all they accomplished, whether great or small. She was a great cook and was always ready to set an extra plate at the table. Friends may call at R. L. Bouchard Funeral Home from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Sunday, May 11. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 9 a.m. Monday, May 12, 2003, at St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church. Burial will be in Millinocket Cemetery. from http://www.angelfire.com/ma/charette/family.html, website of Guilford Charette: "Raymond Charette...worked like his father, in the woods of St. Francis, Maine from the end of September till the end of April or early May. They lived in camps that were very cold and wet. Their beds were made of wood and covered with cowhide. From the cowhide, small bugs would form, which would get on their skin and in their beards while sleeping. The younger boys, 13-14 years old, would collect firewood for heating and cooking. It was a very hard way of life. After collecting the logs along the St. John River during the winter, the logs would be brought done the river as soon as the ice melted. After the logging was done for the year, they would return home to collect their money. The salary at this time was about $10.00 a month. By the time Jean would return home, after having been for the better part of the year, there was little money left. Ang·ele, his wife, while he was gone, would buy food products, molasses, salt, etc. This would be deducted from the money he was making, so when he arrived home there was about $5.00 left. Since he had not drunk any alcohol while in the woods, this $5.00 would not last very long. He would then head for Winn/Lincoln, Maine area for the rest of the year to harvest tine from the trees. Tine was used to make acid dye, or turpentine.
"One day the young Raymond, son of Jean Marie, was approached by a recruiter who offered him $200.00 to join the Army and then after enlisting, he would receive $12.00 a month. This was the best offer he had ever heard from anyone, so without thinking twice he enlisted along with his brother, Theodore. It would take him a whole year to make that kind of money so it was understandable why he enlisted. He said good-bye to his family. He left Ft. Kent with Theodore walking to Caribou, ME in August 1862 and then on to Houlton. In Houlton his brother had second thoughts, and decided that he wasn't going through with it. Theodore ran across to Canada at Skedaddle Ridge, walking along the St. John River at night so he wouldn't be detected until he made it back to Ft. Kent. Raymond Jean later served under the commands of General Chamberland [Chamberlain?] and General Grant. On the 1st and 2nd April 1865 at 4 o'clock Raymond Jean Charette was wounded in the right arm. The bullet hit his rifle, slanted "During the surrender of General Lee on April 9, 1865, Raymond was standing underneath an apple tree, which was later cut into small pieces for souvenirs. He was taken, later that day, to Washington, DC for his wounds. During his time in the war, he was also treated for diarrhea, which was one of the big killers during the war. More soldiers died from diarrhea or other sicknesses than bullets. While he was in Washington, DC, John Wilkes Booth shot President Lincoln on April 14 and he died the next day on April 15, 1865. All the soldiers in the area, including...Raymond Charette, with his bandaged arm, were selected to walk in President Lincoln's funeral procession. As each soldier passed the casket, a tiny bow of crepe was pinned on his uniform.
"On 27 June 1865, Raymond Jean Charette received his discharge. "He then left by train for Bangor, ME, and from there walked to Ft. Kent, arriving July 1865. Due to the fact he only spoke French and could neither read nor write, his discharge papers had the name, as they understood him, JAMES SHARETT. During a interview extracted from the Bangor Daily News dated November 28, 1922, Raymond said that he could remember seeing his comrades, often during the lull in a battle, sit down and take notes of what was happening. Since he was illiterate, he was unable to do so. Being illiterate was probably the cause for not receiving his pension until 18 years after his discharge. In order to get his pension he walked to either Sherman or Patten, Maine, to engage the services of a lawyer named Benjamin who finally obtained his pension for him. He received $8.00 dollars a month at first in three payments, and it gradually increased to $72.00 dollars a month. He was also given 160 acres of land at School Block, located somewhere between Ft. Kent and the Violet Settlement. He then became one of the wealthiest men in Ft. Kent, Me. He was only one of four French-speaking [men] from Ft. Kent to serve in the Civil War.

They lived in camps that were very cold and wet. Their beds were made of wood and covered with cowhide. From the cowhide, small bugs would form, which would get on their skin and in their beards while sleeping. The younger boys, 13-14 years old, would collect firewood for heating and cooking. It was a very hard way of life. After collecting the logs along the St. John River during the winter, the logs would be brought done the river as soon as the ice melted. After the logging was done for the year, they would return home to collect their money. The salary at this time was about $10.00 a month. By the time Jean would return home, after having been for the better part of the year, there was little money left. Ang·ele, his wife, while he was gone, would buy food products, molasses, salt, etc. This would be deducted from the money he was making, so when he arrived home there was about $5.00 left. Since he had not drunk any alcohol while in the woods, this $5.00 would not last very long. He would then head for Winn/Lincoln, Maine area for the rest of the year to harvest tine from the trees. Tine was used to make acid dye, or turpentine.
"One day the young Raymond, son of Jean Marie, was approached by a recruiter who offered him $200.00 to join the Army and then after enlisting, he would receive $12.00 a month. This was the best offer he had ever heard from anyone, so without thinking twice he enlisted along with his brother, Theodore. It would take him a whole year to make that kind of money so it was understandable why he enlisted. He said good-bye to his family. He left Ft. Kent with Theodore walking to Caribou, ME in August 1862 and then on to Houlton. In Houlton his brother had second thoughts, and decided that he wasn't going through with it. Theodore ran across to Canada at Skedaddle Ridge, walking along the St. John River at night so he wouldn't be detected until he made it back to Ft. Kent. AMANDA CHARETTE
FORT KENT - Amanda Charette, 95, died Oct. 3, 2005, at a local healthcare facility. She was born June 5, 1910, in Fort Kent, the daughter of Denis and Josephine (Voisine) Theriault. Amanda was an avid knitter, quilter, gardener and a great cook. She will be dearly missed by her family and friends. She is survived by eight children and their spouses, Glenda Johnston and her husband, Richard, of South Windsor, Conn., Lorraine Fortin and her husband, James, of New Britian, Conn., Jeannette Bourgoin of Bloomfield, Conn., Rowena Bernier and her husband, Stewart, of Weatogue, Conn., Edmond and his wife, Rena, of Plainville, Conn., Donald of Soldier Pond, Lincoln and his wife, Louisette, of Plainville, Conn. and Carrol and his wife, Mary Ann, of Southington, Conn.; four sisters, Sadie Levesque, Izy Thibodeau, Mamie Theriault and Evelyn Theriault; one brother, Yvon Theriault; 26 grandchildren, several great-grand-children. In addition to both her parents she was predeceased by her husband, Willard, in 1980; a son, Harold, in 1955; a son-in-law, Raymond Bourgoin in 1989; a grandchild, Kenneth Bourgoin in 1987; and three sisters, Daly Pelletier, Laura Conley and Theresa Lavoie. Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Thursday and 8 a.m. Friday until time of service at Daigle & Nadeau Funeral Home, Fort Kent. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Friday, at the St. Louis Catholic Church, Fort Kent with the Rev. Paul Labree officiating. Committal service will follow in the parish cemetery. Those who wish in her memory may donate to the National Center for the Blind, 1445 North Boonville Ave., Springfield, MO 65802.
