General Notes: Husband - Amos Munroe

Amos came to Spencer, Massachusetts in 1768 and bought a farm there. He married the daughter of Jacob and Ann (Capen) Prouty.

He served as a soldier in the Revolutionary War.

"Genealogy of the Lexington Munroes" (by R. S. Munroe) gives Anna's birth as ca. 1758 and death date as 8 Oct 1835. A handwritten genealogy dated 10 Sep 1867 and apparently written by Joshua Munroe, Jr., Anna's grandson, says she died in 1825 age 77. That would put her birth date as about 1748. Both references say she married in 1768. Therefore, the latter birth and death date seem more likely since they would place her at age 20 when she married, while the former set would place her at about age 10.

Burial Notes: Child - Otis Munroe

Bethel Baptist Cemetery

General Notes: Child - Otis Munroe

Various Munroe family notes state that Otis was born in 1797. Indeed, his death certificate states his age as 38 at the time of his death from asthma on 14 Jul 1834 in New York City, and the same certificate lists his birthplace as Boston, Massachusetts. The certificate shows his remains were interred at Bethel Baptist Cemetery in New york, a cemetery no longer active. According to "The Ichnography of Manhattan Island 1498-1909", by I. N. Phelps Stokes, there were three large burying grounds in Manhattan in 1828, one being for the Baptist and Scotch Churches in Wooster Street, near the old Potter's Field, now Washington Square.

Otis probably moved from Boston to New York City, New York in the mid 1820's. He is found in the 1830 census of New York, and in New York City Directories. He was a printer in New York City in the 1820's and 1830's living in various places in the city including the rear of 31 Orange Street (1826), 27 Mulberry Street (1829-1830), and 117 Orange Street (1832-1834).

That Otis Munroe, father of Malvina, William and Eliza, is the same person as Otis Munroe, son of Amos Munroe and Ann Prouty, is pure conjecture. However, there seems to be a good case to believe it to be true. The extensive genealogical research of Harry E. Boland led him to this conclusion.

Nothing is known about the marriage or descendants of Otis Munroe the son of Amos Munroe. Nothing is known about the parents or ancestors of Otis Munroe the father of three. The only problems with assuming the two people are one are: Otis, the son, is recorded as being born on 8 Nov 1791 in Spencer, Massachusetts and Otis, the father, is said to have been born in 1797 in Boston, Massachusetts. Boland explains these discrepancies as follows. During the time in question, the numeral "1" was commonly written in a way that made it look like a "7". It would be easy to believe that this fact could cause an error to be made in one of the birth dates. Also, the information that Otis, the father, was born in Boston, Massachusetts, comes from information given by his widow on Otis' death certificate. Since she was from Pennsylvania, she may not have been very familiar with Massachusetts and Boland conjectures that she may have stated the more familiar "Boston, Massachusetts" rather than Spencer, Massachusetts.

In light of these plausable conjectures, and in the absence of any evidence to the contrary, it is assumed that the two Otis Munroes are the same person, but anyone interested in this genealogical line should be aware that the connection is not proven.

Birth Notes: Husband - David Munroe

Cambridge Farms

General Notes: Husband - David Munroe

**********
The following is from the New England Historical and Genealogical Register, Vol. C, 1946 via. "History and Genealogy of the Lexington, Mass. Munroes":

The Lexington records mention only the birth of David Munroe (born in Cambridge Farms, later Lexington), but Connecticut was then being settled by emigrants from the colonies of Plymouth and Massachusetts Bay, and in Apr 1705 he and his wife are found in Canterbury, when their first child was born.

His wife, Deborah (or Deborah) was the daughter of Samuel and Mary (Nutting) Howe (or How). Some references say they were married on 1 Apr 1722, but that doesn't seem likely unless David had a previous marriage which produced most of his children.

The town of Canterbury contained but ten families when it was endowed with town privileges in 1703. In 1714 Samuel Adams and Obadiah Johnson conveyed a farm of 136 acres to David Munroe, by deed recorded in Canterbury. In 1722 David and Deborah joined the church in Canterbury. In 1723 a division of common lands was made among those residents of Canterbury "who were settled inhabitants and paid to ye building of ye meeting-house and minister's home" which were completed in 1711. In this allotment, David received one and one- half shares. In 1743 a controversy arose among the members of Canterbury church over a sermon by its minister which did not meet the views of many of them. A committee recommended the minister's dismissal, David and five others made written protest against the committee's report, severely criticising its motives. The committee retaliated by recommending that David and his associates be expelled from the church. The matter was finally settled by dismissal of the minister, with David and the other protestants remaining in the Church.

The identity of David Munroe of Canterbury as the son of William Munroe of Cambridge Farms was questioned by one writer upon the ground that not being mentioned in William's will it indicated that David probably died young. Later, however, Rev. Mr. Northrup and Dr. Will S. Munroe, author and prominent educator, for many years professor of psychology in Montclair, N.J. State Normal School, in their preparation of the "Genealogy of Josiah Munroe," after much careful research became convinced, and so stated in their publication, that David of Canterbury was, without a doubt, the son of William of Cambridge Farms.

Their conclusions were based upon the following, among other circumstances: David, appearing as he did, among the early settlers of Canterbury, must have emigrated there from some other place, but the records of emigrants to New England prior to that time and the published vital statistics of Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut disclose no one bearing tht name who could have been identified with him other than William's son David; between the time of his baptism in Lexington in 1699 and the birth of his first child in Canterbury in 1705, he was of the age when one might expect him to marry and establish a home in a new community; there was a family tradition that he came from Cambridge; his grandson, John Munroe, who lived and died in Canterbury, left a written family record which passed to John's granddaughter, Mary Munroe Collins, who retained it until it was destroyed by a fire which burned the Collins home in 1890, but she well remembered its contents which told of the coming of William from Scotland to Massachusetts and the settlement of his son, David, in Canterbury, all of which she related to Dr. Monroe when he visited Canterbury in 1912 collecting material for their work. Moreover, it appeared that four of David's seven daughters, viz., Mary, Eleanor, Elizabeth and Sarah bore the given name of his grandfather and his uncle. It would be quite unreasonable to presume that such a coincidence of names would occur except in immediately related families. in addition to all this Mrs. Collins told Dr. Monroe, and after her death, her son informed him of this sketch that his mother had told him that David's wife came from Concord, Massachusetts. A search of the Concord vital records disclosed only one woman named Deborah, born there of marriageable age for David, viz., Deborah How, daughter of Samuel and Mary How. Upon further search it was found that Samuel How had joined the tide of emigration to Connecticut. According to the "Howe Genealogies" published by the New England Historical and Genealogical Society, he resided in Concord until shortly after 1700 when he moved to Plainfield, a new town in Windham County, Connecticut. It is also there stated that his daughter Deborah married David Monroe and the Probate Records of Plainfield, where he died, show that David Monroe in 1725 receipted for his wife's share of Samuel How's estate. The same records show the distribution of the estate of Mary how who died in 1727 and refer to Deborah Monroe as her daughter.

If David Munroe had died in Lexington, his death would have been recorded in the vital statistics of that town and his remains would have rested in the family burying ground with a tombstone marking his grave as do those of his mother and father. The absence of these is further corroborative proof of the correctness of Rev. Mr. Northrup's conclusion as to the identity of David Munroe of Canterbury as William's son of that name. In 1913 the Lexington Historical Society published a revised edition of Hudson's "History of Lexington" in which David Munroe was shown as a son of William. The correction relating to him, appearing in Vol. II, after the index at page 6 of Additions and Corrections, read as follows: "Before Joseph no. 6 on page 461 insert; David Munroe(2) (William(1)) b. 6 Oct 1680; d. 19 Jun 1755. He removed to Canterbury, Connecticut and bought land 22 Feb 1715. In 1723 received 1.5 shares of land as one who paid towards the meeting house and minister's house, which were completed in 1711. He will was probated 8 Sep 1755"

General Notes: Husband - John Munroe

John Munroe was admitted to the church 1 Feb 1699 together with his father, and sisters Martha Commee, Elizabeth Rugg and Hannah Pierce. He was subscriber for the meeting-house in 1692, and was taxed for the purchase of ministerial land in 1693. He was one of the assessors in 1699, 1714 and 1720; constable in 1700, selectman in 1718, 1719 and 1726; also treasurer in 1718, 1719 and 1720. He was employed several years to ring the bell and sweep out the meeting-house, which shows that he did not consider it derogatory to perform this type of work.

On 13 May 1709, he bought ten acres of land adjoining his farm in Cambridge. On 22 Feb 1723, he gave 20 acres in Lexington to his son, John. This land was sold back to John Sr. in Dec 1725 when John Jr. migrated to New London. John Sr. continued to acquire property in Lexington. In the last deed found for him, he bought land adjacent to that of his deceased father, William.

According to the Andrews reference, John and others had 900 acres granted to them in 1735 for services rendered in an Indian fight at Lamprey River on 6 Jun 1690.

John was honored with the office of Lieutenant in the military. He along with others, had nine hundred acres of land granted to them in 1735, for services rendered in the Indian fight at Lamprey River, 6 Jun 1690.

Lucius R. Paige in his "History of Cambridge, Mass. 1630 to 1877," speculates that Hannah Marrett was John's second wife, but R. S. Munroe argues convincingly in his book about the Lexington Munroes that she was John's first wife.

Jonathan moved to Spencer, Massachusetts about 1768, but he left Spencer and went to Plainfield, Massachusetts before 1780. His second wife, Sally Coggswell was from Paxton.

At a legal meeting of the inhabitants of the District of Plainfield, in the home of Mr. Simon Burroughs, on Monday, 25 Jul 1785 Mr. Munroe was chosen one of the Surveyors of Highways. The next eight meetings were held at the home of Jonathan Munroe, whose house then stood where that of the late Lewis Shaw stood. In 1964, his home was still standing and in fine condition and owned by Mr. Edward Bloom. Jonathan bought numerous pieces of land in Plainfield. The records of these purchases are in the Registry of Deeds at Northampton, Massachusetts.

Jonathan returned to Spencer with all his eight children except the two oldest. He purchased a farm in North Spencer and lived in a long low house on the east side of the road. His son, Jonathan was born in this house there they lived for many years.

His daughter, Clarissa, was born to Jonathan and Sally Coggswell before he married her. This child was brought up in his family. She was always known to the family as Aunt Kent and was a very estimable woman.

Jonathan was a great hunter and he used to go to Kentucky where he hunted with Daniel Boone.

He was known by the cognomen of "Corporal Joe". He may have had an active part in the American Revolution on 19 Apr 1775, but because of his age (88) it would have been on that day only.

One reference gives his birthdate as 16 Aug 1685. R. S. Munroe gives his death date as 1787. Ebb says he died on 12 Feb 1737 but that is unlikely since he supposedly participated in the Revolutionary War.
