General Notes: Husband - Captain James Montgomery
Born 1765 in Blandford, MA. Moved with his father to Harpersfield, Delaware County, NY, in 1790.
James married Maria "Mamre" Gaylord in 1795.
The Ashtabula County History mentions; Mamre married James Montgomery and had one child and she died shortly thereafter. Mamre died in Harpersfield, Delaware County, NY, 1796. Other sources claim they had two children, Mary Jane "Mamre" Montgomery b 1795, and a son, Levi Gaylord Montgomery b 1796.
James married Mary "Polly" Baldwin in 1796.
The Ashtabula County History says "James and his wife, Mary "Polly" Baldwin, came to Conneaut, Ohio, (with his father, Robert b 1741, in 1800?) with 4 children, three children by Mary and the first child by Maria "Mamre" Gaylord." (But, those 4 children may have been Mary Jane b 1795 and Levi b 1796 of the first marriage, and Lewis b 1798 and Polly b 1800 of the second marriage.)
RE: Levi Gaylord Montgomery, b. 1796 of Mamre Gaylord: Other sources claim Levi was left with relatives in New York, and the older child of Mamre and James, a daughter named Mary Jane "Mamre" Montgomery b 1795, made the trip to Ohio with her 3 step-siblings. Levi's dates: As published in the Geneva (OH) Times article, by H.R.R. Gaylord, on August 28, 1873.
James' children born in Ohio should probably all be born in Salem/Conneaut for the years 1802-1813 as James is known to be in Austinburg in 1814 when Colonel James, Jr. is born, and then came Hugh b abt 1820.
James owned a hotel in Conneaut, and owned, with others, a boat which ran to Buffalo for immigrants and provisions. Later they built a grist mill in Conneaut.
Elected Clerk of the town of Conneaut in its initial organization in 1804, at that time it was called Salem.
Was, for two terms, Representative for the Conneaut area/portion of Ohio, to the Ohio Legislature when their sessions were held in Chillecothe.
In 1813, moved his family to the banks of the Grand River at Austinburg, OH.
In 1832, James was Clerk of Township, also a highway supervisor.
General Notes: Wife - Mary Polly Baldwin
From Catskill, NY at time of marriage, sister of Daniel Baldwin.
Arrives in Ashtabula County in 1798.
May have descended from the Baldwins who arrived on the ship Martin, in 1638.

THE MARAIS DES CYGNES MASSACRE
The Marais des Cygnes massacre occurred on the 19th of May, 1858. It was the most brutal and inexcusable of all the outrages committed in Kansas by the Border-Ruffians. It was planned and carried out by one Charles A. Hamelton, who had lived, in 1857, in Linn County, three miles east of Trading Post. This point has already been noted in the early part of this work. A postoffice was established there in 1857, and called Blooming Grove. Hamelton was a well-to-do man, owned a number of slaves, was of an aristocratic and insolent bearing, and had come to Kansas to help make it a slave State. He was intolerant of the principles of his Free-State neighbors, and had little intercourse with them. On one occasion William Hairgrove, also from Georgia but a Free-State man, visited Hamelton, but was not received with that boasted Southern hospitality. Hamelton's nearest neighbor was "Broad Tom" Jackson, an aggressive, forceful, Pro-Slavery man. Hamelton had two brothers in Kansas at that time. One was a physician at Fort Scott, another, a young man, Algernon S. Hamelton, studied law with Judge Barlow at Paris, a town near the present Mound City.
The disturbances in Linn County began in a small way in 1855, but nothing of note occurred until the following year. In the fall of 1856, George W. Clarke led in about four hundred Missourians. This was the same Clarke who claimed to have murdered Barber in the Wakarusa War. He led his band of Border-Ruffians to the town of Paris, which was a Pro-Slavery settlement. There he received some recruits, after which he went to Sugar Mound. Arriving there they robbed the house of Ebenezer Barnes, and looted his store and the postoffice. After committing these outrages, the Ruffians broke up into small bands and raided the settlement, burned some houses and committed other depredations, after which they returned to Missouri.
James Montgomery had recently settled in Linn County. He was born December 22, 1814, in Ashtabula County, Ohio. He was a cousin to General Richard Montgomery, who fell at the storming of Quebec. In 1837 he went to Kentucky where he engaged in teaching. In 1852 he went to Pike County, Missouri, intending to go on to Kansas when it was open for settlement. In July, 1854, he explored Bates County, Missouri, looking for a location, but was not satisfied with that country. He passed into Kansas and bought a claim near Mound City. He soon became prominent on the Free-State side, and opposed James P. Fox and other Pro-Slavery men. It was not long until he was the recognized leader of the Free-State forces in Southwestern Kansas.
Clarke's party had intended to murder Montgomery, but he escaped. He determined to bring at least some portion of this band to justice. He went to the house of Captain Burnett, in Missouri. Burnett was a member of Clarke's band, and had not yet returned. He was not acquainted with Montgomery and did not know the young man he found at his house. Montgomery pretended to be from New York, and desirous of finding employment as a teacher. Burnett found him a school in his neighborhood. Montgomery taught two weeks, living at Burnett's house. In the meantime he learned the identity of many of Clarke's men. He then returned home and raised a company of seven Free-State men. He led this party to the vicinity of Burnett's house, and went into a secret camp in the timber. He disguised two of his men as Indians and had them ride over the neighborhood. Seeing them, the Missourians supposed the Miami Indians were coming in to steal horses. To take steps to protect themselves from this supposed band of predatory Indians, the neighbors met at Burnett's house, on an appointed day. Montgomery took possession of the house at dark. When a Missourian would approach, Montgomery's men would make him prisoner, disarm him and secure his horse. Burnett was treated in this way upon his arrival, having been absent from home. The guns taken from these Missourians were broken. Montgomery took $250 in money and eleven horses from the men who had thus assembled, and returned to Linn County. Montgomery justified his course on the ground that he had only secured from Clarke's raiders an equivalent for what had been destroyed by them and stolen in his immediate neighborhood. And, further, that the horses and money were given to those who had suffered losses at the hands of these raiders.
The Free-State men soon began to return and re-occupy their claims. Very little occurred about Trading Post of enough importance to be mentioned in connection with the other troubles of the border until the spring of 1858. Many of the leaders of the Border-Ruffians, had by that time been forced to leave Leavenworth, Atchison, and other places, by the triumph of the Free-State men. The Border-Ruffians east of Trading Post became threatening as early as April, 1858. The Free-State men organized a militia company, of which Mr. Tucker was Captain and James M. Sayre, Lieutenant. They armed themselves and stood ready to meet Clarke's Ruffians, whom they expected to appear at any time. The anticipated trouble did not materialize, and the company discontinued their daily meetings, to drill, on the 17th of May. William Allen of this company was acting in the capacity of spy, and he immediately disappeared when it was resolved to discontinue the daily drills. He was in possession of all the plans of the Free-State people, and these he revealed to Hamelton, who had, in the meantime, gone to live with Jerry Jackson, who had a store at West Point, in Missouri. Hamelton had left Kansas because of the increasing strength of the Free-State men, who had been constantly coming in and settling in his neighborhood. On the 18th of May, Hamelton addressed the Ruffians assembled at Jackson's store, and called for volunteers to go with him "down in the valley to attend to some devils down there." He made it plain that he wanted only men who would obey orders. That night a number of Border-Ruffians assembled at Jackson's store. They were led southward by Hamelton, who refused to reveal to Jackson his true intentions.
The 19th of May was a beautiful, clear, warm day. The settlers were at work in the fields. At nine o'clock Hamelton, with thirty-two men, crossed the Marais des Cygnes at Trading Post, coming from the south. They were heavily armed, boisterous, and abusive. They assembled at a saw-mill which was in process of construction, where they made prisoners of the workmen. From the mill they went to the post-building, then in charge of John F. Campbell, whom they made prisoner. Failing to find any other Free-State men at Trading Post, they marched north on the old military road to a point between Timbered Mound and Prairie Mound. Here they released all the prisoners except Campbell. They drove him before them to the house of Samuel Nickel. Here Hamelton dismounted, and, with a revolver in each hand, went into the house and found Mrs. Nickel sewing. Mr. Nickel was fortunately away from home, but Hamelton refused to believe this when Mrs. Nickel so informed him. A search of the house was made. One of the Ruffians, in climbing into the loft, knocked a heavy clock from its shelf. This clock fell on the baby, which was lying in a cradle. When Mrs. Nickel screamed in alarm, Aaron Cordell, one of the Ruffians, shoved his revolver against her and exclaimed, "Howl, damn you, howl!"

Note: In 1690, there was an expedition to Canada. In 1768, along withJosi ah Richardson and Norman Clark, Ebenezer was one of thepetitioners for t he land grant for Bethel. They claimed they were ancestors of the origin al group that was on the 1690 expedition.
There were many Bartletts in Hanover and Bethel, and many are living toda y, particularly in Bethel, who are descendants of Ebenezer of Newton, Mas s. Ebenezer's father, Joseph, Jr., and his grandfather, Joseph, Sr., al so resided in Newton, Mass. Ebenezer acquired land in Sudbury Canada, so me of which was located north of the Androscoggin River in what is now Ha nover. It is thought he acquired it for speculation purposes.
Six of his sons, Enoch, Sr., Jonathan, Moses, Sr., Thaddeus, Stephen a nd Peregrine, moved to Sudbury Canada. It is also recorded that a daughte r, Mary, who married James Sprague, also moved to Maine, USA locating fir st in Greene and finally locating north of the Androscoggin River.
Ebenezer was married twice, first to Ann (Clark) who gave birth to five ch ildren, two boys and three girls, and second to Anna (Ball), the daught er of John and Abigail (Harrington) Ball, who gave birth to twelve childre n, six boys and six girls.
Of the six brothers, Moses, Sr., Stephen and Peregrine chose to settle nor th of the Androscoggin River in what is now Hanover, on land acquired fr om their father. The other three brothers settled south of the river in wh at is now Bethel. Enoch, Sr., at a later date, also moved north of the riv er. The Bartletts were prominent citizens of Bethel and Hanover, servi ng the two towns in many capacities. Some were also politically promine nt in county and state affairs. The Hanover Bartletts served a tot al of 27 years as assessors or selectmen, one year as treasurer, and thr ee years as collector of taxes.

STEPHEN BARTLETT
Stephen, born in Newton, Mass. on April 24, 1765, was the fifth son and t he tenth child of the twelve children of Ebenezer and Anna (Ball) Bartlet t. He, like his two brothers, Peregrine and Moses, Sr., settled north of t he Androscoggin River in territory now known as Hanover.
He built his home on land, map location No. 61, then in Sudbury Canada, n ow Hanover, acquired from his father, Ebenezer, and located about 2.8 mil es easterly from where his brother Peregrine built. The home was owned a nd occupied by three generations of Bartletts, with Elhanan and Cyrus foll owing Stephen. On June 6,
1789, Stephen purchased from Joseph Twitchell of Sherbourn, three interv al lots adjacent to his farm. The last owner and occupant was Wesley V. Be an, Sr. The house is still in existence and is located on the Old County R oad, a few hundred feet westerly of the site of the Bartlett Schoolhous e, probably so named because of the many Bartletts who lived in the area.
On October 23, 1787, at the age of 22, Stephen married Dorcas (Barbou r) of Gray who was born on July 19, 1769. Stephen was a farmer by trade a nd worked the farm until it was taken over by his son,
Elhanan. Although the home was about eight-tenths of a mile south of the a ctual gore line, it must have been considered to be within the gore as Ste phen was elected to serve as third assessor in the plantation of Howard Go re in 1826.
He passed away in that part of Bethel, now Hanover, on February 14, 18 32 at the age of 66, and Dorcas passed away in that part of Bethel, now Ha nover, on October 28,1841 at the age of 72 (at cemetery 71). Both are buri ed in Lot 18 in the old section of the Hanover Cemetery. Their son Elhana n, his wife Joanna and their daughter Susan are also buried in the same lo t.
Children First three children born in Sudbury Canada, remainder born in Be thel.

PEREGRINE BARTLETT (at cemetery, Perigrine)
Peregrine, born in 1768 in Newton, Mass., was the sixth son and last chi ld of the twelve children of Ebenezer and Anna (Ball) Bartlett. He settl ed north of the Androscoggin River in Howard Gore, now Hanover, and bui lt a home on land purchased from Phineas Howard, Sr. With its stately s et of buildings, this home is commonly referred to as the Charles Bartle tt Homestead and is located on U.S. 2 about one and a quarter miles from N ewry Corner, map location No. 90. According to Nathaniel Segar's dictat ed account of his capture by the Indians, the home wasn't in existen ce at the time of the Indian raid in 1781; it probably wasn't built unt il after the time of the purchase of the Howard Gore by Phineas Howard, S r. in 1794.
Peregrine purchased two parcels ofland from Phineas Howard, Sr., the fir st by deed dated November 29, 1809 for which he paid $300. This deed was t ypical of many of those given in that era and reads verbatim as follows:
"Beginning at a small ash tree standing in a steep gully so-called then ce running north 18° west to the north line of the gore thence N 671/ 2° E about 100 rods to a stake and stones thence S 18° E to a stake and st ones in Bethel north line thence west to bound began at."
Peregrine also purchased a second parcel from Phineas Howard, Sr., for $15 0, covered by a deed dated January 4, 1814 and containing about 70 acre s. The homestead was actually located in what is now Bethel, about 1100 fe et southerly of the gore line.
Peregrine was by trade a farmer and lumberman. He married Sarah (Merril l) of Andover, born in 1777, who gave birth to fifteen children. She pass ed away on September 15, 1831 at the age of 54. Peregrine passed away on D ecember 18, 1832 at the age of 64. Both are buried in Lot 13 in the old se ction of the Hanover Cemetery, along with six of their children.

The link between William Munroe of Lexington, Massachusetts and Robert Munro of Aldie has not been proven beyond a doubt. However, there is a body of circumstantial evidence that supports that assumption. An excellent summary of the evidence can be found in the preface to "History and Genealogy of the Lexington, Mass. Munroes" by R.S. Munroe.
William was born in 1625 near Inverness, Scotland. He was probably the son of Robert of Aldie who "went to the wars in Germany" and had sons George, William and Benedict. Robert of Aldie married in Nuremberg and died in Germany in 1633.
William was probably conscripted to serve in the army in the constant battles going on at this time. All men between the ages of 16 and 60 were expected to fight in Scotland's wars.
It was a time of great upheaval in Scotland. There was no chief at Foulis keeping the clan together. The Black Baron had already fallen into debt and disposed of much of the property. He had married three times, once bigamously, and was in Germany in the service of Christian IV where he died in 1633 when William was eight years old. Scotland was at war with England and within Scotland there were accumulating differences, political and religious, among Catholics and Presbyterians, covenanters and royalists. Battles large and small raged from coast to coast.
A historian noted the poverty of an exhausted broken down distracted country. Another wrote, "Our miseries and danger of ruin are greater than for many ages... a potent victorious enemy masters our seas... and the best part of our land. Our standing forces against his imminent invasions are few, weak and inconsiderable. Our kirk, state and army are full of divisions and jealousies. Our people south of the Forth are spoiled and near starving; north they are extremely ill-used by our own, many inclined to treat with Cromwell without care of king or covenant; none of our neighbors are willing to give us any help though called."
All men were conscripted, except those who were termed "malignant", not loyal to the cause, and many arguments resulted. King Charles was displaying treachery, playing both sides against each other. Cromwell attempted to bring the King in line without further bloodshed but without success.
In this miserable state, Cromwell met the Scots at Dunbar on 3 Sep 1650. A terrible battle ensued. Three thousand men fell on the field. Ten thousand were taken prisoner. Five thousand sick and wounded were dismissed from the field and allowed to go homeward, if able. Those who survived a violent disorder in prison were sold as slaves to the plantations.
The Scots did not surrender. The wars continued for another year. The castle at Edinburgh was surrendered without bloodshed, although rape, robbery and murder were perpetrated on the citizens by the soldiers outside the castle walls.
William was with the Scottish Army under Bonnie Prince Charles (Charles II) which engaged the English at Worcester on 3 Sep 1651, exactly one year after the Battle of Dunbar. The battle raged for three hours and the Scots initially had the upper hand until the arrival of fresh English troops. The slaughter went on for two more hours. The victors and the vanquished entered Worcester fighting. The noise woke up King Charles who had been sleeping while men died for him. He rushed into the street and attempted to take charge, but was ignored. Seeing the direction of events, the king fled with fugitives who were leaving the city. Two thousand men were killed and between six and seven thousand were taken prisoner in the city and more later. William was among those captured.
All who lived at Worcester were taken by Cromwell and imprisoned or sent to the plantations. Almost all of the Scottish Chieftains were ruined, dead, in prison or in exile. The clans were abolished and it was forbidden to wear tartans.
William was sold to the plantations, probably the best thing that could have happened to a Scotsman at that time. He was shipped from London on 11 Nov 1651 by Jo, Reex, Robert Rich and William Green on the "John and Sarah", arrived in New England in Mar 1652, and consigned to Thomas Kemble of Boston, who had the privilege of selling his indentured servants for periods of from six to eight years. Four Munros were on board: Robert, John, Hugh and one name, thought to be William, which was obliterated on the manifest. William might have been sold as an apprentice at the Saugus Iron Works. The Beckett reference says "William Munrow (Munroe, Munro), says tradition, was bound out to a farmer by the name of Winship, who resided in that part of Cambridge called Mehotony (now Arlington), and when his indenture had expired he set up for himself, going farther back into the woods and procuring a tract of land within the prsent limits of Lexington, on a section now known as Scotland."
If William was sold as an apprentice when he first arrived in America, he must have been his own man by 1657 because he and one Thomas Rose were fined in Cambridge for not having rings in the noses of their swine.
Around 1660, he settled in the northeasterly part of Cambridge Farms, now known as Lexington, near the Woburn line. In those days this part of the town was called "Scotland". He was made freeman in 1690 and on 1 Feb 1699 was received into Communion of the Church. In 1693, he was one of the committee "to treat for the purchase of land for the minister." In 1694 he was a selectman of Cambridge and later his name appears in connection with several other important parish offices.
The Ackerman reference speculates that William was born in 1634.
His first wife, Margaret George, was the daughter of John and Anna (Goldstone) George of Charlestown. The Mills reference says Margaret was born about 1636.
His third wife was the widow of Edward Dwyer (or Wyer) of Charlestown, daughter of William and Elizabeth Johnson. The Ellis reference says Elizabeth was William's second wife and that Mary Ball was his third.
Several references say William was the son of Robert Munro of Aldie [10900]. Robert [10900] was the uncle of Robert Munro of Aldie [2760], William's father as listed here.
The Hopkins reference says William was the son of "Farquhar Munroe of Aldie" and Catherine MacCulloch, and the Andrews reference says William was the son of Robert Munro XVIII of Foulis. There is no hard proof as to the actual identity of William's father.

Birth Notes: Child - David Munroe
Cambridge Farms
General Notes: Child - David Munroe
**********
The following is from the New England Historical and Genealogical Register, Vol. C, 1946 via. "History and Genealogy of the Lexington, Mass. Munroes":
The Lexington records mention only the birth of David Munroe (born in Cambridge Farms, later Lexington), but Connecticut was then being settled by emigrants from the colonies of Plymouth and Massachusetts Bay, and in Apr 1705 he and his wife are found in Canterbury, when their first child was born.
His wife, Deborah (or Deborah) was the daughter of Samuel and Mary (Nutting) Howe (or How). Some references say they were married on 1 Apr 1722, but that doesn't seem likely unless David had a previous marriage which produced most of his children.
The town of Canterbury contained but ten families when it was endowed with town privileges in 1703. In 1714 Samuel Adams and Obadiah Johnson conveyed a farm of 136 acres to David Munroe, by deed recorded in Canterbury. In 1722 David and Deborah joined the church in Canterbury. In 1723 a division of common lands was made among those residents of Canterbury "who were settled inhabitants and paid to ye building of ye meeting-house and minister's home" which were completed in 1711. In this allotment, David received one and one- half shares. In 1743 a controversy arose among the members of Canterbury church over a sermon by its minister which did not meet the views of many of them. A committee recommended the minister's dismissal, David and five others made written protest against the committee's report, severely criticising its motives. The committee retaliated by recommending that David and his associates be expelled from the church. The matter was finally settled by dismissal of the minister, with David and the other protestants remaining in the Church.
The identity of David Munroe of Canterbury as the son of William Munroe of Cambridge Farms was questioned by one writer upon the ground that not being mentioned in William's will it indicated that David probably died young. Later, however, Rev. Mr. Northrup and Dr. Will S. Munroe, author and prominent educator, for many years professor of psychology in Montclair, N.J. State Normal School, in their preparation of the "Genealogy of Josiah Munroe," after much careful research became convinced, and so stated in their publication, that David of Canterbury was, without a doubt, the son of William of Cambridge Farms.
Their conclusions were based upon the following, among other circumstances: David, appearing as he did, among the early settlers of Canterbury, must have emigrated there from some other place, but the records of emigrants to New England prior to that time and the published vital statistics of Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut disclose no one bearing tht name who could have been identified with him other than William's son David; between the time of his baptism in Lexington in 1699 and the birth of his first child in Canterbury in 1705, he was of the age when one might expect him to marry and establish a home in a new community; there was a family tradition that he came from Cambridge; his grandson, John Munroe, who lived and died in Canterbury, left a written family record which passed to John's granddaughter, Mary Munroe Collins, who retained it until it was destroyed by a fire which burned the Collins home in 1890, but she well remembered its contents which told of the coming of William from Scotland to Massachusetts and the settlement of his son, David, in Canterbury, all of which she related to Dr. Monroe when he visited Canterbury in 1912 collecting material for their work. Moreover, it appeared that four of David's seven daughters, viz., Mary, Eleanor, Elizabeth and Sarah bore the given name of his grandfather and his uncle. It would be quite unreasonable to presume that such a coincidence of names would occur except in immediately related families. in addition to all this Mrs. Collins told Dr. Monroe, and after her death, her son informed him of this sketch that his mother had told him that David's wife came from Concord, Massachusetts. A search of the Concord vital records disclosed only one woman named Deborah, born there of marriageable age for David, viz., Deborah How, daughter of Samuel and Mary How. Upon further search it was found that Samuel How had joined the tide of emigration to Connecticut. According to the "Howe Genealogies" published by the New England Historical and Genealogical Society, he resided in Concord until shortly after 1700 when he moved to Plainfield, a new town in Windham County, Connecticut. It is also there stated that his daughter Deborah married David Monroe and the Probate Records of Plainfield, where he died, show that David Monroe in 1725 receipted for his wife's share of Samuel How's estate. The same records show the distribution of the estate of Mary how who died in 1727 and refer to Deborah Monroe as her daughter.
If David Munroe had died in Lexington, his death would have been recorded in the vital statistics of that town and his remains would have rested in the family burying ground with a tombstone marking his grave as do those of his mother and father. The absence of these is further corroborative proof of the correctness of Rev. Mr. Northrup's conclusion as to the identity of David Munroe of Canterbury as William's son of that name. In 1913 the Lexington Historical Society published a revised edition of Hudson's "History of Lexington" in which David Munroe was shown as a son of William. The correction relating to him, appearing in Vol. II, after the index at page 6 of Additions and Corrections, read as follows: "Before Joseph no. 6 on page 461 insert; David Munroe(2) (William(1)) b. 6 Oct 1680; d. 19 Jun 1755. He removed to Canterbury, Connecticut and bought land 22 Feb 1715. In 1723 received 1.5 shares of land as one who paid towards the meeting house and minister's house, which were completed in 1711. He will was probated 8 Sep 1755"

He was known by the cognomen of "Corporal Joe". He may have had an active part in the American Revolution on 19 Apr 1775, but because of his age (88) it would have been on that day only.
One reference gives his birthdate as 16 Aug 1685. R. S. Munroe gives his death date as 1787. Ebb says he died on 12 Feb 1737 but that is unlikely since he supposedly participated in the Revolutionary War.
