Bill Griffith Former area resident Bill Griffith died July 26, 2004, at the V.A. Medical Center in Portland. Mr. Griffith was born July 2, 1923, in Portland to parents Earl and Gladys Griffith. He lived in the communities of Portland, Astoria, Independence, Madras and Culver before moving to Salem about six years ago. His special interests included fishing, traveling in his motorhome, hunting, dancing socially, and flying small aircraft. He was a member of the Eagles Lodge. On Aug. 7, 1947, he married Betty Jean Curtis in Astoria. She preceded him in death in 1996. He married Frances Harter on Feb. 2, 1998, in Astoria. Survivors include his wife, Frances Griffith of Salem; daughters, Marilyn Hayhurse of Madras and Norma Rice of Albany; son, David Griffith of Kalispell; grandchildren, Dan, Sarah, and Randy Rice, Katherine Weaver, Christian Day and Dana Griffith; and four great-grandchildren. Memorial services were held July 30, at the Albany Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. Memorial contributions have been suggested to the American Cancer Society of American Heart Association, in care of Fisher Funeral Home, 306 S.W. Washington St., Albany, OR 97321.

Bill was born in Portland, the son of Earl and Gladys Griffith
He married Betty Jean Curtis on Aug 7, 1947, in Astoria. She died in 1996.
Bill married Frances Harter on Feb 2, 1998, in Astoria.
She survives, as do his daughters, Marilyn Hayhurst and Norma Rice; son David Griffith; grandchildren Dan, Sarah and Randy Rice, Katherine Weaver, Christina Day and Dana Griffith; and four great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church.
Contributions can be made to American Cancer Society or American Heart Association in care of Fisher Funeral Home.

Jane Dowdle Smith, Attorney, 'An Absolutely Brilliant Woman'

As Washington state assistant attorney general for 25 years, a mother of three and an avid tennis player, Jane Dowdle Smith had it all.
"She was an absolutely brilliant woman," said her legal secretary and friend, Beverly Walter. "I've never met a woman as smart as she was and not only in the legal profession. She could talk to you about anything you wanted to talk about.
"She used a little profanity in her language, and people were a little afraid of her. She was a tiger."
Mrs. Smith died June 7 of complications from a stroke. She was 79.
Bright, pretty and mischievous as a toddler in her hometown of Douglas, Ariz., Mrs. Smith moved with her family to Catalina Island in Southern California, where she went to high school. She played violin and competed in tennis - once against legendary film star Errol Flynn.
Earning a master's degree in political science at UCLA in 1940, she headed to New York to study medicine but lost interest and caught a bus back to California by way of Seattle.
The city's beauty captivated her. She got a job as a Boeing Co. expediter and enrolled in the University of Washington Law School, also serving as editor of The Law Review.
She earned a law degree in 1946 and landed the plum job of assistant attorney general.
"Jane was representing the Department of Health and was the authority on Native-American jurisdictional problems - who had rights on tribal lands," said Walter.
"She also was representing the Department of Health, the Washington State Medical Disciplinary Board . . . and the Washington State History Association."
In 1971, Mrs. Smith became deputy prosecuting attorney of Thurston County. Two years later, she set up private practice in Elma and McCleary, Grays Harbor County. She did a lot of pro bono work and worked on library boards in the evening.
She retired in 1980 and moved to Seattle in 1982 to be near her family.
"She loved trial work the most," said her son Graham Smith of Seattle. "At the time she was working, attorneys did everything and didn't specialize as they do today. I was most struck by her intelligence, quick wit and sense of humor."
Mrs. Smith liked to keep busy, going to ballet and the theater in her free time.
"Jane loved to read, mostly history and biography, and in later years, spy novels," said her sister, Charlotte Dowdle of Seattle.
Mrs. Smith's other survivors include her children Curtis Smith and Julie Smith, both of Seattle; her brother, James Dowdle, of Campbell, Calif.; and three grandchildren.
Services have been held. Remembrances may go to any charity.

Helen Maybell (Perry) McNally, 72, died Wednesday, (March 15, 2000) in Houlton, ME. She was born April 19, 1927, in Sherman, ME, the daughter of Temple and Effie (Curtis) Perry. She is survived by her husband of 46 years, Clayton McNally of Sherman, ME; four children, Cary McNally of Wolcott; Annette Deperno of Santa Rosa, CA; Clayton Lee McNally of Granby; and Albert McNally of Strousburg, PA; several grandchildren; two sisters, Mavis Morgan of Sherman, ME; and Gloria McKenzie of East Millinocket, ME; a brother, Sherwood Perry of New Zealand; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a brother, Baine Perry. Funeral services will be Monday, 2 p.m. at the Washburn Memorial Church, Sherman, ME, with the Rev. Ron Gillis officiating. Friends may call Sunday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the church. Spring interment will be in Sherman Mills Cemetery. SHERMAN - Mavis Nola Morgan, 81, died Oct. 29, 2004. She was born Jan. 22, 1923, in Sherman Mills, the daughter of Effie Maybell (Curtis) and Alvah Temple Perry. Mavis graduated from Sherman High School in 1941, where she was a member of the basketball team. She held a variety of jobs including caretaker of Sherman Cemetery, and Town of Sherman ballot clerk. She was an avid historian and enjoyed researching genealogy. She was a proud Red Sox Fan, a Democrat, and a regular attendant at the Church of Faith in Sherman for many years. She is survived by five sons, Russell and his wife, Sharon, Larry and his wife, Roanne, Michael and his wife Nancy, of Hermon, Marlon of Randolph, and Scott, of Sherman; one daughter, Mellony of Winterport; one sister, Gloria MacKenzie of East Millinocket; 20 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Herbert Morgan; and one daughter, Loretta Morgan Smiley.
