He was in Co. A, 8th Conn. Vols. Sharpshooters. Enlisted at the age of
thirteen and was honorably discharged July 4, 1865. At the battle of
Cold Harbor he was one of forty-two who volunteered to draw the
sharpshooters' fire, and the only survivor. He received at this time a
severe wound in the shoulder, from which he has never recovered. For
thisgallant act he received one of the six testimonials of honor awarded
by the State of Conn. July 4, 1867. He was b. in Sheffield, Mass, and
resides at No. Monmouth.

pg 9-13: Jonathan Fairebanke (Fairbank, Fairbanks) came from Sowerby in
the West Riding of Yorkshire, England, to Boston, Mass., in the year 1633
and in 1636 settled in Dedham, Mass., where he built the noted "Old
Fairbanks House" which is still standing as an ancient landmark, the
oldest dwelling house in New England that, for the same period of time,
has been continuously owned and occupied by the builder and his lineal
descendants. It is, moreover, a remarkablefact, perhaps unparalleled in
this country, that during all this time, two and a half centuries, the
estate has never had a mortgage encumbrance upon it.
The following unique record appears on the books of the First Church:
"Jonathan Fairebanke notwithstanding he had long stood off fro' ye church
upon some scruples about publike p'fession of faith & ye covenant yet
after divers loving conferences wth him; he made such a declaration of
his faith & conv'sion to god & p'fession of subjection to ye ordinaces of
Xt in this X yt he was readily & gladly received by ye whole church: 14d
6m 1646."
pg 18 & 19: According to current traditions the remote ancestors of
Jonathan Fairebanke, senior, livd in Scotland, but there is some reason
for believing that they were of ancient Norman Stock, for it is said that
two Coats of Arms, one claimed as belonging to the Lancashire branch of
the family, and the other to the Yorkshire branch, can be traced back to
the time of William the Conqueror. The names Ferbanc and Fairbrae have
been mentioned in this connection.
Of his immediate English ancestors we have but little knowledge. They
were, it is said,mostly small farmers and tradesmen, but people of
substantial and worthy character. Jonathan was evidently not of the
ignorant lower classes, but had a fair education, and was, says
tradition, a man of strong common sense, sound judgement and good
executive ability. His name appears frequently in the History of Dedham.
He held some minor town offices, but apparently was not prominent in
public affairs. He appears rather as a sturdy, industrious, thrifty and
independent pioneer, content to live and labor within the sphere in which
his lot had been cast.
There are good grounds for the inference that he possessed more ample
means than the average immigrant of those days. He was able to bring his
entire family with him and support them in Boston till he found a
satisfactory location for a permanent home. Having done that, he very
soonerected a dwelling house more than ordinary pretensions, and of such
substantial character that it has withstood the ravages of time and been
handed downto his successors through eight generations.
pg 31: He was born in England, before the year 1600. He came to Boston
with his family in 1633, and remainedthere about three years, when he
settled in Dedham, being one of the earliest Pioneers. He with others
signed the Covenant when the town was established and named.
He died in Dedham, Dec. 5, 1668. His wife's name was Grace Lee [Grace
Smith as corrected by the NEHGR 60:153]. She died 28th 10 mo. 1673, or
19: 8: 1676.

Aug. 29, 1620, and died "the 25 of the 1 mo. 1654." She married 2ndly,
"the 2 of the 6 mo., 1654," Christopher Smith, who is mentioned as her
husband in her father's will.

Winthrop, Oct. 7, 1819; lived in Monmouth until 1850, practicing somewhat
in the Thompsonian school of medicine. The latter years of his life were
spent upon the homestead farm, where his death occurred April 30, 1885.
His tastes were scholarly; he was an assiduous reader and well informed
as to current events. Hemarried, Jan. 30, 1843, Mary E. C., daughter of
Thomas and Mary (Ayer) Richardson, who was born Nov. 13, 1818, and died
Jan. 12, 1850.

pg 9-13: Jonathan Fairebanke (Fairbank, Fairbanks) came from Sowerby in
the West Riding of Yorkshire, England, to Boston, Mass., in the year 1633
and in 1636 settled in Dedham, Mass., where he built the noted "Old
Fairbanks House" which is still standing as an ancient landmark, the
oldest dwelling house in New England that, for the same period of time,
has been continuously owned and occupied by the builder and his lineal
descendants. It is, moreover, a remarkablefact, perhaps unparalleled in
this country, that during all this time, two and a half centuries, the
estate has never had a mortgage encumbrance upon it.
The following unique record appears on the books of the First Church:
"Jonathan Fairebanke notwithstanding he had long stood off fro' ye church
upon some scruples about publike p'fession of faith & ye covenant yet
after divers loving conferences wth him; he made such a declaration of
his faith & conv'sion to god & p'fession of subjection to ye ordinaces of
Xt in this X yt he was readily & gladly received by ye whole church: 14d
6m 1646."
pg 18 & 19: According to current traditions the remote ancestors of
Jonathan Fairebanke, senior, livd in Scotland, but there is some reason
for believing that they were of ancient Norman Stock, for it is said that
two Coats of Arms, one claimed as belonging to the Lancashire branch of
the family, and the other to the Yorkshire branch, can be traced back to
the time of William the Conqueror. The names Ferbanc and Fairbrae have
been mentioned in this connection.
Of his immediate English ancestors we have but little knowledge. They
were, it is said,mostly small farmers and tradesmen, but people of
substantial and worthy character. Jonathan was evidently not of the
ignorant lower classes, but had a fair education, and was, says
tradition, a man of strong common sense, sound judgement and good
executive ability. His name appears frequently in the History of Dedham.
He held some minor town offices, but apparently was not prominent in
public affairs. He appears rather as a sturdy, industrious, thrifty and
independent pioneer, content to live and labor within the sphere in which
his lot had been cast.
There are good grounds for the inference that he possessed more ample
means than the average immigrant of those days. He was able to bring his
entire family with him and support them in Boston till he found a
satisfactory location for a permanent home. Having done that, he very
soonerected a dwelling house more than ordinary pretensions, and of such
substantial character that it has withstood the ravages of time and been
handed downto his successors through eight generations.
pg 31: He was born in England, before the year 1600. He came to Boston
with his family in 1633, and remainedthere about three years, when he
settled in Dedham, being one of the earliest Pioneers. He with others
signed the Covenant when the town was established and named.
He died in Dedham, Dec. 5, 1668. His wife's name was Grace Lee [Grace
Smith as corrected by the NEHGR 60:153]. She died 28th 10 mo. 1673, or
19: 8: 1676.

"the 2 of the 6 mo., 1654," Christopher Smith, who is mentioned as her
husband in her father's will.
