Isaac Michaud and the First Michauds in Madawaska, New Brunswick by Jean-Eudes Michaud.
Isaac Michaud was born and baptized on October 10, 1768 at St-Louis de Kamouraska. His parents are Jean-Baptiste Michaud, so called one-eyed and Marie-Louise Morin dite Valcourt, who were married September 15, 1760 at St-Louis de Kamouraska. He is the descendant of Jean-Baptiste Michaud and Marie Vaillancour.
The first religious record of a Michaud in New Brunswick is that of Joseph Isaac Micho (Michaud) who is a godparent on 27 July 1794 with Marie Luce Martin to a child of Charles-Boniface Roy and of Anne Martin inhabitants of Hotpagne on the Saint John River by the name of Euphresine Roy, child baptized privately at home, aged five years, three months and twenty-two days and who had for Godfather: Joseph Isaac Micho (Michaud) who is 27 years old and the Godmother Marie Luce Martin who would become his future mother-in-law.
In 1793, we find his name in (The minutes of court of Common pleas show that in the year 1793, one Iscab Williams assulted and ivonded Isaac Michaud, Williams was arrested and taken to Fredericton by John Baptiste Denoyer for trial. Williams was obliget to pay the sum of 3 L et 15 S To Michaud par time lost by the latter in consequence of the woind he had reseived and the sum of 3 Louis and 6 S to Denoyer for exiddeuses in brimquey him dacon the river.)
Isaac Michaud was a Godfather several times. In 1806 he is the Godfather of Marie Luce Gaudin on 18 July at the Mission Ste-Anne de Frederiction. Marie Luce was born on 8 August 1805 the daughter of Francois Gaudin, farmer, and Magdeleine Martin; the Godmother was Marie Martin. Two years later, he is the Godfather of Venerande Gaudin who was born in the month of July and baptized on 8 October 1809 at Ste-Anne de Fredericton, daughter of Joseph Gaudin and Marie Martin; the Godmother was Magdeleine Gaudin. He was also the Godfather of Magdeleine Gaudin who was baptized on 11 June 1815 aged 5 and a half months at Ste-Anne des Pays-Bas, daughter of Toussaint Gaudin and Magdeleine Tardif; the Godmother was Magdeleine Martin.
Isaac Michaud lived in Ste-Anne des Pays-Bas, which is today Fredericton, during his married life and probably before due to his work as a courier. Who better than he to know the Saint John River Valley. The dauntless couriers transported mail between Nova Scotia and Lower Canada during the American Revolution. For the most part, this route was an immense forest, inhabited by wild animals, and frequented by indians or a few "coureurs des bois". Thus, it was a difficult and dangerous trip especially during the periods of war. The 600 mile journey was made by birch bark canoe during the summer and on snow shoes in winter. This long and difficult journey was made by the Acadian and Canadian couriers in less than fifteen (15) days, an average of forty (40) miles a day.
The most well known of these interprovincial postmen were Joseph Dufour, brothers Louis and Michel Mercure and Jean Baptiste Martin (Isaac's 2nd father-in-law was Jean Baptiste Martin). It was one of these couriers who carried the news to Quebec via Saint John of the surrender to the American Army of the English troups under the command of Cornwallis.
These messengers were clothed in the same manner as the "coureurs des bois", with the traditional wool knits, the sash with the arrow design, the ample leather moccasins. Musket on shoulder, casing on belt, a pipe between their teeth, brave as Bayard, stubborn as Bretons, superstitious as Mohawks, Faithful to God, and to their new king, they made their way like the royal messagers from old Europe; just as proud, no less fearless, without a doubt they were also undaunted heros, if not without reproach.
The Gouverner Halimand of Quebec and the Gouverner Parr of Halifax, on several occasions, praised the integrity of these messengers who risked their lives in the most difficult cercumstances, who faithfully accomplished the missions entrusted to them. They received fifty (50) dollors for each voyage. The Gouverner Halimand, who was well-known for being furgal commented to Parr that he found this amount a little excessive, but quickly added: I am extremly happy, even at this price, to have such faithful and brave voyagers who accept such hazardous duties.
It is during the month of June 1785, that the first group abandonned the establishment at Ste-Anne, to go in search of a new homeland up the Saint John River and created the settlement in Madawaska.
There are not yet any Michauds established in New Brunswick and the new family of Isaac Michaud, like his in-laws stayed at Ste-Anne as well as all who were couriers. All the children were born at Ste-Anne des Pays-Bas. During Isaac's last years in Ste-Anne he is said to be a farmer.
Since Isaac had family in Madawaska, He moved to Grand-Sault (Grand Falls) in May 1825. This was the first family to live in Grand-Sault, besides the soldiers at the garrison. His brother later settled on land between the Falls and Saint-Leonard on the Canadian side of the river.

Venerande Martin was born about 1779. Her parents died before her marriage. Her father Jean-Baptiste Martin died October 26, 1806 at the age of 67 and the burial took place on June 22, 1809 at the Mission de Ste-Anne. His wife Marie-Anne Levasseur died June 16, 1807 at the age of 69 and the burial took place on June 22, 1809 ?? at the Mission de Ste-Anne with the visit of the missionary and also included the burial of Theotiste Godin on June 30, 1809 and the baptisms of Andre Michaud on June 17, 1809 and of Isaac Michaud's second marriage to Venerande Martin on June 28, 1809. This was a busy week for the missionary.

Per research of John Lyle Bascom-Gordon, Compiler of this line:
"John Peaslee intended marriage with Mary Martin on 22 Mar 1704/05, and were married in the home of Thomas Barnard who was his uncle by marriage. It is said the 'forty-seven persons' attended the wedding.
Mary Martin was the daughter of John Martin and Mary Weed, and a granddaughter of George Martin and Susanna North. The widow, Susanna Martin, was executed at Salem, MA, 19 Jul 1692, for witchcraft. She was the inspiration of Whittier's famous poem and some others by other authors. John Martin later moved to that part of Amesbury now called Newton, NH.
It is recorded in New Hampshire State Papers, Vol. 13, that in 1747 'a petition was presented to the Selectmen of Salisbury and Amesbury District in regard to a road laid out in 1699.' This petition was signed by JOHN PEASLEE, JOSEPH; JOHN PEASLEE, DAVID; JAN; DAVID; MOSES; JAMES; and NATHAN PEASLEE. This represents the father and most of his sons. His son, Ebenezer, did not sign and we find that he had moved to Connecticut.
His sons, Nathan and Moses, married sisters, daughters of Jonathan Gove and Mary Lancaster. The Goves were Methodists and Nathan and Moses were both excluded from the Society of Friends. Nathan later moved to Lincoln County, Maine, near what was called Balltown, and Moses remained in Newton, New Hampshire. Both had several children.
His sons, James David and Moses were married by Orlando Bagley, Justice of the Peace. In the records of Haverhill, MA, an unnamed child of John and Mary is given as being born 02 April 1713. This child is identified in 'The Peaslees and Others of Haverhill and Vicinity' as being David. In the 'History of Sutton, NH', he is said to be the son of John and his age at time of death, places his birth in 1713. It also states here that he married Rachel Bean, a sister of Samuel Bean, but Drummond in his collections on 'The Bean Family' doubts that a Rachel Bean ever existed. In the Amesbury Vital Records, it states that David Peaslee and Rachel Straw declared their intention of marriage 15 January 1742, and that they were married by Orlando Bagley, J.P., on 09 February 1742. The Bean record is undoubtedly an error. Rachel Straw was daughter of John Straw and Lydia Sargent of Salisbury and Amesbury, MA.
In 'Peaslees and Others of Haverhill and Vicinity', a Mr. Beede, who is said to have many records of the Peaslee Family, writes that 'Joseph and Martha had twelve children; Jacob, who settled in Kingston, died leaving one son; Nathan Peaslee married Lydia Gove and had nine children; Moses and Mary Gove had ten; James and Abagail had seven; and David and Rachel had eleven; making in all sixty grandchildren, by their sons, to John and Mary Peaslee. Their descendants are found in Newton, Plaistow, Kingston, Danville, Pittsfield, Sandwich, Weare, Deering, Henniker, and Sutton, NH; Maine; Vermont; New York; New Jersey; Canada and the West.'
But few of the children of James and Abagail are known as yet (1932). This is also true of Jacob and Huldah.

John Peaslee married Mary Martin of Amesbury in May of 1705. Mary was the granddaughter of George and Susanna Martin. Susanna was tried and convicted of being a witch during the infamous Salem Witch trials in 1692. She was executed. Later, one of her descendents, John Greenleaf Whittier, the famous Quaker poet, wrote the poem "The Witch's Daughter" about Susanna's daughter. John moved to Newton, NH in 1713.

Barnabe MARTIN married Jeanne PELETRET, the daughter of (FNU) PELLETRET
and Jeanne BOURG, at Port Royal in 1667. SGCF confirms this date,
stating
that 'Jeanne PELLETRET married Barnabe MARTIN in 1667 and Jacques la
Vanier dit Langevin in 1687.' ARSENAULT describes Jeanne as 'originaire
de Paris.' The 1678 census of Port Royal lists Jeanne and Barnabe as
living with their two sons and daughters. The 1686 census lists
45-year-old Jeanne as the 'widow' of Barnabe. Acadian church records
show
that Jeanne PELLETRAY died January 10, 1706 at 63. Barnabe Village
across
the Annapolis River from Pierre THIBODEAU's Pree Ronde (Round Hill), was
named after Barnabe.

GRAND FALLS, New Brunswick – Marie Jeanne "Jeannette" Martin, 81, died Saturday, Sept. 2, 2006, at a Grand Falls health care facility. She was born Sept. 27, 1924, in St. Michel, New Brunswick, the daughter of Jean Baptiste and Beatrice (Bard) Parent. Jeannette is survived by five children, Jocelyne Martin of Bangor, Roger Martin and his wife, Dianne, of Denver, Colo., Gilles Martin and his wife, Idabelle, of Medway, Anne Marie Porter and her husband, Mike, of Wisconsin and Lise Budden of Bangor; eight grandchildren, Crystal, Heath, Jeremy, Jeff, Alyssa, Jason, Kyle and Ryan; two great-grandchildren, Audrianna and Hunter Martin; four brothers, Gerard Parent of Nova Scotia, Jean Parent of Willimantic, Conn., Robert Parent of Waterford, Conn., and Louis "Regent" Parent of Charleston, S.C.; three sisters, Carmel Guitard of Meriden, Conn., Viola Mazzerole of Limestone and Alva Martin of Meriden, Conn.; many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her first husband, Harmidas Martin (1911 - 1964)
; her second husband, Pius Martin; and a brother, Neil Parent. At Jeannette's request, funeral services will be private. Interment will be at the East Millinocket Cemetery. Gifts in memory of Jeannette may be sent to the Alzheimer's Association, Maine Chapter, 163 Lancaster St., Suite 160B, Portland, ME 04101, or to the Lupus Association, 149 Madison Avenue, Suite 205, New York, NY 10016.
