L'orthographe du nom Micheau
Avant de suivre notre anctre aprs sa traversŽe de l'Atlantique, examinons l'orthographe de son nom. Pourquoi "eau"? Jean-Louis Beaucamot, dans son ouvrage Les noms de famille et leurssecrets, nous apprend qu'au Poitou les noms formŽs du son "o" prennent le "au" ou "eau" en finale, et ce diminutif est gŽnŽralement affectueux en VendŽe, Charente et Maine-et-Loire. !Al'origine, les hommes Žtaient dŽsignŽs par un nom, un nom unique donnŽ par la famille. A partir du Xie sicle, un renouveau dŽmographique a provoquŽ en France une grande confusion. Chaquefamille, au sein de chaque village, s'est alors dotŽe d'un surnom qui va s'ajouter ˆ son nom et se transmettre hŽrŽditairement. Les noms de famille sont donc vieux de luit sicles, et quelquevingt-cinq gŽnŽrations ont adoptŽ l'usage des deux noms. C'est ainsi que le nom unique "Michel" a ajoutŽ son diminutif et est devenu "Micheau". La finale "aud" nous aurait ŽtŽ apportŽe dubassin moyen de la Loire, du Berry, de la Touraine et de l'OrlŽanais, rŽgions o les Micheau se seraient propagŽs aprs le XVIIe sicle. Les noms sont nŽs du langage parlŽ; ils n'ont ŽtŽ Žcritsque plus tard ". Descendants du poitevin Pierre Micheau, nous aurions dž garder cette finale "eau" que l'usage avait perpŽtuŽe. Cette forme du XVIIe sicle, en principe, est la plus fidle ˆson origine. Les registres paroissiaux et notariaux du Poitou ne connaissent pas d'autre Žpellation au XVIIe sicle. Aujourd'hui, toutes les formes les plus fantaisistes ont libre cours :Michaux, Michault, Michaud et Michyot. Parmi les dŽrivŽs du prŽnom Michel, on retrouve en Normandie et en Picardie Michelin, Michon et Miguel. Le nord de la France a inscrit comme nom defamille "Michels". Pierre Micheau alias Pierre Michel, nom donnŽ ˆ notre anctre, rappelle tout simplement les deux patronymes.
