General Notes: Wife - Susanna North
30 Apr 1692 - a warrant for arrest was issued; 2 May 1692 - she was
arrested and taken to Salem jail; she was a short active woman of
extraordinary neatness; she pleaded not guilty at her trial; she and 4
others were taken by cart through the streets and up to Gallows Hill were they were hung; the bodies were flung into a crevice among the rocks on Gallows Hill; in 1696 a document was made public signed by 12 jurors from the trials asking for forgivness of all whom they justly offended; in 1706 Ann Putnam, one of the afflicted girls, asked for pardon by confessing in the meeting house; she was forgiven; in 1709 twenty-one witches and children of witches, asked that their reputations be restored and also for compensation. Susanna's children never applied for or received anything; The Commonwealth of Massachusetts cleared the names of everyone accused of
witch craft in 1957.
"She is described as a 'short, active woman, wearing a hood and
scarf, plump and well developed in her figure, of remarkable personal neatness', and one who 'scorned to be drabbled'. In all frankness, from all that has been gathered, Susanna Martin appears to have been a woman with a sharp tongue, quick to make accusations of others, quick tempered, an unfriendly neighbor and a person neighbors and townspeople could easily and quickly dislike, and long remember for real or fancied snide remarks made by her about them, and one against whom many could hold grudges and when the time came, be very ready and even possibly take delight in making accusations against her. Witness the fact that at least ten different people testified against her at her trial for witchcraft, and also the Court's remarks that she was 'a strong minded woman as her examination shows.'"
"In 1711 all those accused of, condemned as, and executed as
witches: WITH THE EXCEPTION OF BRIDGET BISHOP, SUANNA MARTIN, WILMOT
REDD, ALICE PARKER, MARGARET SCOTT AND ANN PUDEATOR, were exonerated as
having ever been witches, and the Court Judgments in their cases were
reversed. At the same time the Colony also appropriated 578 pounds and 12 shillings; about $1600.00 today; to be paid to the heirs of those
executed."
"Then in 1945 a descendant of Ann Pudeator, H. Vance Greenslit, while
tracing his genealogy and ancestry, made the startling discovery that this particular ancestor of his was not only executed as a witch, but also that the six, above named, had never been exonerated. So he wrote to retired Judge Robert W. Hill, a Salem, Mass. attorney, who prepared a bill for petition and State Senator J. Elmer Callahan filed it with the clerk of the Massachusetts Senate. It failed to pass and the idea was then shuffled around until another bill was drawn up and presented on March 5, 1954, where it did pass in the Massachusetts House of Representatives, but was then delayed, pigeonholed, until August, 1957, when it was finally passed and signed by Gov. Furcolo, and so became a law, and finally after 265 years these last six Salem 'witches', had their sentences reversed."
NOTE: She & her husband were among the 30 original families who left
Salisbury to form the town of Amesbury.
NOTE: John Greenleaf Whittier's poem "The Husking" was written about
Susanna and her daughter. In August 1957 Governor Foster Furcolo signed
a resolve clearing her name of witchcraft.
---------------
Major Robert Pike was the first and strongest representative of the right of petition in New England. (For a lengthier discussion see The Essex Antiquarian, 4:113-117) According to Hoyt: "Maj. Robert and Mrs. Pike were first on the list of members of the Salisbury church in 1687; andhe was the most prominent citizen of Salisbury during the last half of the 17th century. ... He took the oath of freedom May 17, 1637...He was very decided in his opinions, which were liberal in advance of his time...He has been calledthe 'moral and fearless hero of New England'; 'the first and strongest representative of the right of petition'; the 'power which squelched the witchcraft delusion', etc." From Charles Hendrick p. 31-32, a slightly modified version of what appears in the Bradbury Memorial, p. 68-70: "He was one of the founders of Salisbury, Mass., and became one of the leading men on committees and commissions for the transaction of the public business. At the age of thirty-two he was chosen a member of the General Court, and had a much longer service in that capacity and as councilor and assistant, than any of his contemporaries. He had a good education and wrote a fine, flowing hand. He was an easy, eloquent and forceful speaker. He was engaged in at least three conspicuous controversies duringhis life. The first was his arraignment by the General Court in 1653, for hishostility to the persecution of the Quakers. The second was his resistance of the dogmatic authority of some of the clergy, in the person of his pastor, Rev.John Wheelwright. The third was his bitter opposition to the witchcraft prosecutions in 1692. In all these controversies, Robert Pike stood practically alone. He was a century in advance of his time, and a century has more than vindicated his advanced positions. The historian of the Salem witchcraft delusion says that "not a voice comes down to us of deliberate and effective hostility to themovement, except that of Robert Pike in his cool, close and powerful argumentative appeals to the judges who were trying the witchcraft cases. It stands out against the deep blackness of those proceedings like a pillar of light upon a starless Midnight sky." Confronting the judges stood this sturdy old man, his head whitened with the frosts of seventy-six winters and protested that there wasno legal way of convicting a witch, even according to the laws and beliefs of those times. It required no small amount of courage for him to take the stand hedid against the opinions of the highest judicial tribunal in the province whenno one was safe from the charge of having dealings with the evil one, and he himself might be the very next one accused of being a witch! But having the courage of his convictions he rose to the demands of the situation and proclaimed his opposition by a formal and thorough exposition: The great merit of this position, so far as it has come down to us, belongs entirely to him, and no man ofhis time is entitled to greater honor. It is a marvel how he breasted the stormwhen any resistance to the popular demamd was deemed evidence of complicity with the witches, imps and all the powers of darkness, to overthrow the true church on earth. He defended and plead the cause of several of the accused, among whom were Mrs. Mary Bradbury, who was condemned but not executed, and Susanna Martin, whose memory is perpetuated by John Greenleaf Whittier, the poet." The 1914 "Americana" comments briefly about Robert Pike: "...he appears as one of theearliest exponents in America of Legislative assemblies, and acquittal in courts of law in default of sufficiently conclusive evidence."

Charles Boniface Roy was born about 1762 while his parents were help capti
ve in Halifax. In 1763 after the Peace Treaty was signed, they headed for t
he area of New Brunswick near Kennebecassis River. It was there along the r
iver that charles was baptized by Father Joseph Mathurin Bourg at the age
of 5 years. The family lived there until 1781,when they settled at Ecoupa
g. It was there charles married Helene Martin, daughter of Jean-Baptise mar
tin and Helene Godin Bellefontaine in 1785. In1791 charles boniface and h
is family settled in Madawawaska where they build a log cabin on Lot 1
16 in Hamlin Plantation. The Roy home is currently being preserved at the A
cadian Village in Van Buren.Their youngest son,Alexandre was born at Ecoup
ag,which means that they must have lived in Ecoupag until least 1806.Charl
es Boniface Roy is considered the father of the Acadian Roys of the Madaw
aska area who are usually identiied as Roy-Boniface.Most of his grandchild
ren, however ,have changed their names to King.
*
CHARLES BONIFACE Roy; born in the prisons of Halifax about 176
2, where h
is parents were also married. His parents were released in 176
8. It is n
ot certain just where they lived from 1768 to 1780, howev
er we do know
th at Charles was baptised at the age of 5 years and 7 month
s, p robably
at Ha lifax by Father Joseph-Mathurin Bourg. This happened on Ju
ly 12 ,
176 8. In 1783, a census was taken of the people living in the u
pper St
J ohnR iver area. Among the settlers of the area were Joseph R
oy and
Benoit R o y. In 1786, the American Loyalists, that is the peop
le of the
American Co lonies who were sympathetic to the British during th
e
Revolutionary War, c am e up to Canada and dispossesed the Acadi
ans from
their land, the seco nd time in thirty years. It is probab
ly at this
time also, that Joseph R oy and his family resettled in the ar
ea of Petit
Rocher in New Brunswic k. Benoit could possibly have moved to Bu
ctouche.
Charles, in all probabil ity, was allowed to stay in the area be
cause of
his age.
In 1785, Charles married his second cousin, Helene Martin, the d
aught er
of Jean Baptiste Martin and Helene Godin Bellefontaine. The marr
iage t
ook place at Ste Anne des Pays Bas.
...... from a letter to Ray Miller from Ron Buckley: (in part)
As I mentioned befor e, I knew people could not find Charles Bon
ifa
ce Roy's land grant because th ey were not looking for Charles K
ing in t
he records. Please be aware that th e surname King was always us
ed in
relat ion to government land grantswhen on e was being grant
ed or when
one was b eing petitioned for by the Roys of Quee nsbury.
Charles sold part of his land grant in later years to his son
s. so
m a ny land transactions took place regarding most "original la
nd grants"
th at many original lots, like Charles's became subdivided. So y
ou see,
Charl es B oniface Roy did receive a land grant. His son receiv
ed the lot
63 abo ve him, as shown on the map, but Francis remained livi
ng at
Kingsclea r, or I should say in the parish of Kingsclear. In t
he census
of 185 1, it appears he didn' t even reside on lot 63.
The land registry records show Charles selling land i n Feb 18
21 to
Sy lvanus King; in Feb 1821 to William King (Julien); in A
pr 18 25 to Alex
Kin g; in Apr 1825 to John Battice King (Jean Baptiste); those w
er e all
so ns of Charles so there you see more proof that this Charles K
ing of
the Pa rish of Queensbury was Charles Boniface Roywithout a dou
bt. Land
pe titio ns show a petition for land by Francis King in 1818, Ab
raham King
in 18 1 8, and a joint petition by Charles, Francis, and Abrah
am in 1818,
and anot her petition by Francis in 1824. Francis received his l
and grant
of l ot 63 i n 1828.
The Buckleys of Queensbury reside onlots 60 and 61 but not 6
2. How
t his took place, I am not sure, consideringthat the original K
ing
grants w ere 62 and 63.

Port Royal was later renamed Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia
Note:
In 1763, he was aprisoner of the English in Halifax, Nova Scotia. A
little
while later he shows up again in Ste. Famille de Ile D'Orleans,
Quebec,
Canada, where he married Helene Godin. He settled in Ste. Anne of
Fredericton in 1768 with his third wife, Marie Anne Levasseur.
Note:
According to Father Louis Armand Martin who died on 18 August 1962 in
St.
Basile, New Brunswick, Canada, who wrote in his personal journal that
Jean
Balthazar, one of the founders of Madawaska,in 1785 married one last
time
to Charlotte Cyr, in Madawaska, where he choseto live. Jean
Balthazar's
descendants lived in Grand Isle, Maine, in Madawaska, and other Maine
towns.
Father Martin did not provide any proof to support these claims,
however.
Note:
We do know that Jean Balthazar was a prosperous farmer. He rendered
valuable
services to the government by delivering dispatches during the war
for
American independence. He was a messenger for the Governors of
Halifax and
Quebec in 1783.
To summarize and offer as explanation it is possible to form some
hypothesis.
Our ancestor often gave the same name to more than one of their
children.
Perhaps Jean Balthasar was a twin. We know that one of his brothers
was
named Jean and an other was called Jean Baptiste. In conclusion, many
references escaped historians during the difficult period between
1754 and
1770. It is unfortunate but few suffered as much as these people did
