Santa Barbara, Calif. - Grace G. McLean, 103, formerly of Millinocket, died from complications of old age, Aug 12, 1998, at the Buena Vista Care Center in Santa Barbara. She was born April 11, 1895, in Sherman Mills, the daughter of James W. and Laura Jane (Buzzell) Ingalls. She was the oldest of 12 children, all of whom have predeceased her except for her youngest brother, John J. Ingalls, formerly of Worchester, Mass. and now living with his wife, Ruth, in retirement in Florida. Grace graduated from Sherman High School in 1912, as valedictorian of her class. For many years, she faithfully returned to Sherman to attend class and family reunions. She graduated from Aroostook State Normal School in 1916 and became a devoted teacher in the Millinocket school system. In 1925, she married George "Scotty" McLean of Millinocket, a widower with four children. Their union was blessed with six children. Grace was a kind and loving mother who by her example and interest in education inspired her stepchildren and own children to earn a good rank. Grace could read Cicero and other high school latin texts, "like English" .
Of the 10 children, through her encouragement, three became University graduates; one a State Normal School graduate; one a church organist, one a nurse, two tax accountants, one a telephone company supervisor of overseas lines in New York City, and one a U.S. Air Force career officer retiring as lieutenant colonel. Grace spent most of her life in Maine but motored to California frequently. In later years, she spent her winters in California and summers in Millinocket where she regularly hosted visiting family members. over the years, while in California, she lived with her daughter, Ellen and husband, Daryl Phillips, in Costa Mesa, later with her daughter Carolyn and husband, Rueben Moore in Santa Ana; and finally with her daughter Jean and husband, Wayne Barrick in Santa Barbara. Grace was a voracious reader and an avid baseball fan of the Boston Red Sox. She enjoyed tatting, corcheting, cribbage and crossword puzzles. She corresponded reguarly with her children, their spouses and grandchildren well into her nineties. On her 80th birthday, she delighted the assembled family members by going for a ride on her grandson's motorcycle. in April, 1995, as the occasion of her 100th birthday, she was feter by more than 50 family and friends at the Holiday Inn in Santa Barbara. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by two of her children, Carolyn R. Moore (1993) in Santa Ana and Maurice C. McLean (1996) in Millinocket. She is survived by eight children, James A. McLean and wife, Leota of Old Town, Alice E Shanks of Millinocket, Hazel M. Thompson and husband Howard of Spokane, Wash., Mary R. Marshall and husband, Frank of Visalia, Calif., Ellen E. Phillips of Costa Mesa, Jean M. Barrick and husband, Wayne of Folsom, Calif., Lawrence A. McLean and wife, Jessie of Melbourne Fla., David L. McLean and wife, Hisaka of Banning Calif. She will be buried in the George "Scotty" McLean lot at the Millinocket Cemetery Graveside services will be held 11 a.m., 1998. Friends and acquaintances of Mrs. McLean are welcome. Funeral arrangement were handled by Santa Barbara by McDermott-Crockett Mortuary and Millinocket by R.L. Bouchard Funeral Home.

ÙCbÙDGEORGE E. LOCKE
ÙC/bÙDYANKEE LOCKE - George E. Locke, the comedian, better known as "Yankee" Locke, died yesterday noon at his home in Dracut, aged 62 years. He had a diseased bone removed from his leg three weeks ago, and the diseased matter from it circulating through his system caused his death. Mr. Locke was born in Epsom, NH in 1817. He made his debut as ÙCiÙDLas CasasÙC/iÙD in "Pizarro" at Boylston Hall, in this city, under the management of Wyzeman Marshall, while yet in his teens. His next engagement was as walking gentleman at the Dorrance-street Theatre, Providence, about 1837, and he subsequently played three years at the Boston Museum. His first "star" engagement was at the old National Theatre in this city in May, 1850, and his first appearance in New York was at the old National Theatre in that city, under A.H. Purdy's management as ÙCiÙDSolomon SiranÙC/iÙD in "Jonathan in England." He went to California in 1861 and spent some time on the Pacific coast. Of late years he has played very little out of New England, being chiefly engaged in managing companies upon that circuit. His last appearance in Boston was at the Howard Athenaeum, where he played ÙCiÙDBarantry RootÙC/iÙD in "Mike Martin" in support of Miss Kate Fisher, during the week of January 6, 1870. Since then he has played with a number of small companies in other Massachusetts cities.

Rev. Samuel (1), Bp. at All Saints, Norttthampton, 30 Nov. 1608, son of Gov. Theophilus by Dorothy, dau. of Edmund Yorke, and half -bro of Gov. Joseph (whose mother was a Dighton), and by marriage become son- in-law of another gov. and bro. of
2 more. He was a merchant and budding magistrate when he turned to preaching, and never depended on that service to support his large family by three wives. Lieut. in 1631, he was from Ipswich with father and bros.-in-laws in 1635, then at
Cambridge, then with the first at Salisbury, where he was on Co. Ct. bench and Rep. 1641- 45. Evidence cont. through life of pub. conf. in his judgement and impact. In 1680 Richard Martyn, Esq., Mr. Sam'l Dudley, Mr. Seaborn Cooton and Elias
Stileman were the committee to draw up the new laws. Exeter, after calling many, invited him to come and preach 13 May 1650, to bring his family when they bot him a house. Portsmouth voted 27 Oct. 1656 to invite Mr. Samuel-Dudlow- to preach,
and 10 Nov. agreed with him "to come unto us this next spring at 80lbs. per yr. But he continued to preach at Exeter until his death, with no evid. of chruch records kept. Lists 376b, 379, 49, 52, 54. Inv. 10 Feb. 1682-3, adm. to widow's
"sonn-in-Lawe" Theophilus. He m. 1st Mary Winthrope, who d. 12 Apr. 1643; 2nd., Mary Byley came in 1638, age 22, whose sis-in-law mar. Dep.- Gov. Sam. Symonds; 3rd. by 1651, one Elizabeth, age 43 in 1671, who in 1702 was liv. with their dau.
Dorothy Leavitt. The deeds of the 50 a. lots into which his 600 a. gr. was divided proves his 12 heirs, Theophilus not claiming a double share. In 1725, with only 2 sons liv. and all but 2 of his 10 sons childless, List 376b, has 10 Dudleys.
DUDLEY: a town with ruins of a castle in Staffordshire but rated in Worcestershire from which various noble families have taken their name.

'George C. Wall, 63 member of a longtime Paris family of reaturant and cafe men, died Saturday in the Veterans Hospital at Bonham (TX). He had served for a time in the Navy during World War II, but received a medical discharge. He was born in Paris, 23 Oct 1902, son of the late Manson S. and Amy Cabaniss Wall, and was a graduate of Paris High School and attended Paris Commercial College. He was a longtime operator of Wall's Cafe at the southeast corner of Clarksville and 1st SE, having sold it some years ago because of ill health. He was in the cafe business here from 1920 to 1950 and formerly lived at 936 E. Booth St. He was stationed at Camp Bradford, VA, during his Navy service. He had been a Deacon of First Presbyterian Church, member of the Knights of Pythias and Masonic Lodges and of the Chamber of Commerce. He married the former Miss Leona Grupe, 28 Jul 1922, her death occurring this year on Jul 13. Survivors include his two children, George C. Wall, Jr., Tyler (TX), and Mrs. James (Carolyn) Stuteville, Richardson (TX); four grandchildren; his mother-in-law, Mrs. O.H. Grupe, Paris; a brother, Manson Wall, Ft. Worth (TX); and a niece and nephew. Funeral Service will be held Monday at 2:30 p.m. at Fry and Gibbs Chapel, conducted by the C.G. Forthman, pastor of First Presbyterian Church. Interment will be made in Evergreen Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Grupe home, 3825 Lamar Road.'

Hywel Dda, (the Good), 'King of all Wales", king of Gwynedd, 915, did homage to Edwin the Elder, son of Alfred the Great, 918, journied to Hereford, circa 926, to acknowledge overlordship of Aethelstan, in whose reign he attested many charters, 931-937, made pilgrimage to Rome, 928, minted his own silver pennies, codified the laws of Wales, circa 945, m. Elen, dau of Llywarch ap Hyfaidd, King of Dyfed (Pembs.), and d. ca. 950, having had a son, Owain ap Hywel Dda. [Source 1]
"Hywel (or Howell) the Good was celebrated as the 'Justinian of Cambria' because of his codification of the laws and his institution of trial by jury with a judge who should act as 'Christ withe the twelve Apostles'. His laws became known as the Law of Hywel Dda (Dda meaning 'The Good'). King of Dyfed in 904, King of Seisyllwg in 909, King of Gwynedd in 942, thus uniting the Kingdom of Wales. Made a pilgrimage to Rome in 928 and was the only Welsh ruler to mint his own coinage. He entered into an alliance with the King of Essex. Married Elen on 904 and had sons Rhodri, Edwin, and Owen, who split the kingdom upon his death, with Owen taking the Kingdom of South Wales." [Sources 2 and 3]
