Before his emigration, John was "an officer of an English Municipal Corporation and had some acquaintance with law.
"John Throckmorton settled at Salem, then the chief port of New England, and took the oath of freeman 18th May the same year. He made purchases of land in the Forest River section of Mass., now known as Marblehead Farms. He retained this land after he removed from Salem. Throckmorton probably went to R.I. during the summer of 1636. He was the sole witness to a deed, Nov. 10, 1637, wherein Roger Williams, jointly with Gov. Winthrop, purchased from Canonicus the large island in Narragansett Bay named by him Prudence, but called by the Indians, Chibachuwest. Oct 8 , 1638, he was one of the twelve to whom Williams deeded land he had purchased from Canonicus and Mantonomi, and thus one of the thirteen proprietors of Pawtuxet. John Throckmorton was among the fifty-four persons to whom was alloted the first home lots in Providence and one of the three men on the committee which formed the original list of lots and the Towne Street on which they lay."
"In 1643 he made application to the Dutch to settle within their jurisdiction which was granted. This grant, subsequently called Throckmorton's Neck and Throg's Neck, embraced the eastern part of the present town. It was bounded on the north by Eastchester neck, on the east by Eastchester Bay, and on the west by Westchester creek. Throckmorton's settlement had a short existence and was obliterated by the Indian uprising in the fall of 1643, when it was set upon by the savages and every vestige of it destroyed. Eighteen persons were killed and those who were so fortunate as to escape death and made their way to the Fort at New Amsterdam and 'some that escaped from the Indian attack went back to Rhode Island', says Winthrop. Among those who returned was John Throckmorton.
"In 1652 he was Town Moderator, at Providence, R.I. In 1664, he became interested in the development of East Jersey, and shortly thereafter became one of the Monmouth Patentees. In 1664-68, 1670-73, and 1675, he was a Deputy in Rhode Island. In 1677 He was Town Treasurer, also in the same year a member of the Town Committee."

Elinor, first wife of Nicholas Knapp, the 1630 immigrant. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ELINOR, CALLED "LOCKWOOD", "DISBROW", & "WATERBURY"
Elinor, first wife of Nicholas Knapp of Watertown, Middlesex Co, Massachusetts and Stamford, Fairfield Co, Connecticut, has been called "Lockwood", "Disbrow" and at times, "Waterbury", in older genealogies. No known record supports such claims! Extant records identify her as "Elinor" only, and ancestry unknown. Her origin and ancestry remain unknown, though no doubt her origin was England. Many early publications state she was born at Combs, Co Suffolk, England, though do so without benefit of supporting evidence. At best we can say "she was (of) England." It is expected that the surname "Lockwood" was assumed as a result of the known relationship between the Knapp's and the Lockwood's, at Watertown, Massachusetts. Thus, many believe she was a probable sister of Sergeant Robert and Edmund Lockwood. On 23 Oct 1943, a query appeared in the "Hartford Times", genealogical page, Query, A-2695, authored by Judge H. Stanley Finch, a Surrogate Judge, Stamford, Connecticut, who gave his opinion that Elinor, wife of Nicholas Knapp, was a daughter of Edmund Lockwood (1594-1635) of Combs, Co Suffolk, England, but did so without supporting evidence. While this would seem possible, proof remains lacking. Later research in 1978, and again in 1995, failed to identify that Elinor, was of any identifiable surname in the early Colonial Records. At any rate, in today's jargon, the "virus" began to spread. Eventually after having been repeated enough, Pedigree Charts sprung forth claiming her as a daughter of Edmund Lockwood, yet a cited source for the entries remain lacking. Unless an extant document can be produced, to label Elinor with any surname, records should reflect her given name of Elinor, only. To do otherwise would only perpetuate the original "atrocious genealogical blunder"! As a result of Mr William Pelham and Mr Edmund Lockwood, paying the fine of Nicholas Knapp, in 1630, the assertion was made that Edmund Lockwood, was his brother-in-law. Nothing could be further from the truth. Research identifies, Mr William Pelham, as the person responsible for Nicholas Knapp, who belonged to his company, and that Mr Edmund Lockwood, was his Deputy, thus the reasons for paying the fine of Nicholas Knapp. Again, the "virus" was perpetuated and became fact without attending proof. As of this writing [1999], her surname remains unknown. General Notes: Husband - Asa Columbus Cox
Asa Columbus Cox and Mary E. Cox are buried at the Mt. Olive Cemetery which is located several miles east of Mooresville in Morgan County, Indiana near the small town of Landersdale. They are buried next to a son Arville C. Cox (b. Feb. 1, 1875, d. March 24, 1877) and a daughter Linnie M. Cox (b. Oct. 4, 1876, d. August 13, 1901). Asa Columbus Cox was born Dec. 12, 1844 and died August 31, 1924. Mary E. Gamble Cox was born Jan. 9, 1850 and died sometime after 1930 (she was living with one of her daughters and son-in-law in Indianapolis at the time of the 1930 census). There is no death date on the tombstone for Mary. My aunt Addie (who is 92) thinks she died in 1932 or 1933. Marion County requires the year of death to do a search for a death certificate but they are open late on Wednesdays for people doing genealogy research. Hopefully we can make a trip on a Wednesday in the near future and see if we can obtain a copy of her death certificate.
Asa Columbus Cox's father (Asa) and mother (Ruth Beeler - Asa's first wife) are also buried at the Mt. Olive Cemetery. Based on information from the Yost/Shouse Family Tree site on Ancestry.com, it appears that another 2 generations of Coxs are also buried at the cemetery. There are tombstones for not only Asa and Ruth but Abner S. and Alice Cox as well as John and Eleaner Cox. In addition, there are grave sites for Beelers, Dollarhides (related families according to the Yost/Shouse site) and a number of Coxs in the cemetery. As well as photos we took at the cemetery, I have a copy of several pages of a tombstone inventory done in 1967 which is at the Mooresville Public Library. I have emailed the contact person for the Yost/Shouse site twice, once last fall to which I received no response and yesterday, to see if I could get some specific information about the Cox family tree.
My aunt Addie does remember Levin Gamble as "Uncle Lev" who lost an arm in the Civil War. Next trip to the Morgan County area, we want to see if we can obtain a copy of Levin's death certificate. I have been in contact with Robin Gamble O'Connor who set up the Gamble family genealogy site you referenced.
