General Notes: Husband - Baldwin Flanders V Of Flanders
Alias:<ALIA> "the /Pious/,"
also called Baldwin of Lille , French Baudouin de Lille , Dutch Boudewi
jn van Rijsel count of Flanders who became one of the most influential fi
gures of 11th-century Europe. He was an active, enterprising man and great
ly extended his power by wars and alliances. He obtained from the Holy Rom
an emperor Henry IV the territory between the Scheldt and theDend
er as an imperial fief, as well as the margravate of Antwerp.
In 1028 Baldwin married Adela (Alix), daughter of King Robert II of Franc
e; at her instigation he rebelled against his father but in 1030 peace w
as sworn and the old count continued to rule until his death.
However, when the latter died in 1049 Baldwin married his son Baldw
in VI to Herman's widow Richildis and arranged that the sons of her fir
st marriage were disinherited, thus de facto uniting the Count of Haina
ut with Flanders.
From 1060 to 1067 Baldwin was the guardian for his nephew-by-marriage Ph
ilip I of France, indicating the importance he had acquired in internation
al politics.

General Notes: Husband - King Of England Henry II King Of England Plantagenet
Alias:<ALIA> /"Curtmantle"/
Henry II (5 March 1133 – 6 July 1189) ruled as Count of Anjou, Duke of Nor
mandy, and as King of England (1154–1189) and, at various times, controll
ed parts of Wales, Scotland, eastern Ireland, and western France. His sobr
iquets include "Curt Mantle" (because of the practical short cloaks he wor
e), "Fitz Empress," and sometimes "The Lion of Justice," whichhad also ap
plied to his grandfather Henry I. He ranks as the first of the Plantagen
et or Angevin Kings.
Following the disputed reign of King Stephen, Henry's reign saw efficie
nt consolidation. Henry II has acquired a reputation as one of England's g
reatest medieval kings.
He was born on 5 March , 1133, at Le Mans to the Empress Matilda and her s
econd husband, Geoffrey the Fair, Count of Anjou. Brought up in Anjo
u, he visited England in 1149 to help his mother in her disputed cla
im to the English throne.
Prior to coming to the throne he already controlled Normandy and Anj
ou on the continent; his marriage to Eleanor of Aquitaine on May 18, 11
52 added her holdings to his, including Touraine, Aquitaine, and Gascon
y. He thus effectively became more powerful than the king of France — wi
th an empire (the Angevin Empire) that stretched from the Solway Firth alm
ost to the Mediterranean and from the Somme to the Pyrenees. As king, he w
ould make Ireland a part of his vast domain. He also maintained lively com
munication with the Emperor of Byzantium Manuel I Comnenus.
In August 1152, Henry, previously occupied in fighting Eleanor's ex-husba
nd Louis VII of France and his allies, rushed back to her, and they spe
nt severalmonths together. Around the end of November 1152 they parted: H
enry went to spend some weeks with his mother and then sailed for Englan
d, arriving on 6 January 1153. Some historians believe that the couple's f
irst child, William, Count of Poitiers, was born in 1153.
During Stephen's reign the barons had subverted the state of affairs to un
dermine the monarch's grip on the realm; Henry II saw it as his first ta
sk to reverse this shift in power. For example, Henry had castles which t
he barons had built without authorisation during Stephen's reign torn dow
n, and scutage, a fee paid by vassals in lieu of militaryservice, beca
me by 1159 a central feature of the king's military system. Record keepi
ng improved dramatically in order to streamline this taxation.
Henry II established courts in various parts of England, and first institu
ted theroyal practice of granting magistrates the power to render legal d
ecisions on a wide range of civil matters in the name of the Crown. His re
ign saw the production of the first written legal textbook, providing t
he basis of today's"Common Law".
By the Assize of Clarendon (1166), trial by jury became the norm. Since t
he Norman Conquest jury trials had been largely replaced by trial by orde
al and "wager of battel" (which English law did not abolish until 1819). P
rovision of justice and landed security was further toughened in 1176 wi
th the Assize of Northampton, a build on the earlier agreements at Clarend
on.This reform proved one of Henry's major contributions to the social hi
story of England. As a consequence of the improvements in the legal syste
m, the power of church courts waned. The church, not unnaturally, oppos
ed this and found its most vehement spokesman in Thomas Becket, the Archbi
shop of Canterbury, formerly a close friend of Henry's and his Chancello
r. Henry had appointed Becket to the archbishopric precisely because he wa
nted to avoid conflict.
The conflict with Becket effectively began with a dispute over whether t
he secular courts could try clergy who had committed a secular offence. He
nry attempted to subdue Becket and his fellow churchmen by making them swe
ar to obey the "customs of the realm", but controversy ensued over what co
nstituted these customs, and the church proved reluctant to submit

General Notes: Husband - Hugh Capet Of France
The election of Hugh Capet as king in 987 began the Capetian Dynasty whi
ch ruled France for much of the middle ages. However, the actual royal do
maine, known as Ile-de-France, was small and weak, consisting of little mo
re that the land surrounding Paris, Orléans and Laon. It was not until t
he 12th century that later Capetians took steps to strenghten the ki
ng in the Ile-de-France.
Hugh Capet (French: Hugues Capet) (938 – October 24, 996) was King of Fran
ce from 987 to 996. Capet is a nickname for "wearing a cape".
Born in 938 in Paris, he came from a powerful and influential family of t
he Germanic aristocracy of France, two members of which had already been e
lected King of France in the ninth and tenth centuries. Hugh Capet was t
he eldest son of Hugh the Great, then the most powerful man in the kingdo
m, maker of kings, and of Hedwige of Saxony (c.910–c.965), daughter of Ki
ng Henry I (the Fowler) of Germany and sister of German Emperor Otto I. Hu
gh Capet wanted to become a lay abbot, and in 980 arranged to move the rel
ics of St. Valery to Amiens Cathedral. Heinherited his father's vast esta
tes and became the most powerful noble of his time. From 978 to 986, Hu
gh Capet allied himself with the German emperors Otto II and Otto III a
nd with archbishop Adalberon of Reims to dominate the weak Carolingian kin
g, Lothair. By 985, he was king in all but name. After Lothair and his s
on died in early 987, the archbishop of Reims convinced an assembly of nob
les to elect Hugh Capet as their king. He was crowned King of France at No
yon, Picardie on July 3, 987, the first of the Capetian dynasty to rule Fr
ance.
Hugh Capet possessed minor properties near Chartres and Anjou. Between Par
is and Orléans he possessed towns and estates amounting to approximately 4
00 square miles (1,000 kmø). His authority ended there, and if he dared tr
avel outside his small area, he risked being captured and held for rans
omor even murdered. Indeed, there was a plot in 993 masterminded by the B
ishopof Laon and Odo I of Blois to deliver Hugh Capet into the custo
dy of Otto III. The plot failed, but the fact that no one was punished ill
ustrates how tenuous his hold on power was. Beyond his power base, in t
he rest of France, there were still as many codes of law as there were fie
fdoms. The country operated with 150 different forms of currency and at le
ast a dozen languages. Uniting all this into one cohesive unit was a formi
dable task and a constant struggle between those who wore the crown of Fra
nce and its feudal lords. As such,Hugh Capet's reign was marked by numero
us power struggles with the vassals on the borders of the Seine and the Lo
ire. Beyond his realm, the investiture and then deposition of Arnulf, neph
ew of the duke of Lorraine, as archbishop of Reims involved the king and b
ishops in conflict with Pope John XV that was not yet resolved at Hugh Cap
et's death in 996.
While Hugh Capet's military power was limited and he had to seek milita
ry aid from the Duke of Normandy, his unanimous election as king gave h
im great moral authority and influence.
Hugh Capet married Adelaide of Aquitaine (952–1004), daughter of Duke Will
iamIII of Aquitaine. Their children were:
1. Avoise (970–1013)
2. Robert II (March 27, 972 – July 20, 1031)
3. Alice (974–1079)
4. Gilette (born c.976)
5. Gisele (born c.978), married Hugh I of Ponthieu.
Hugh Capet died on October 24, 996 in Paris, and was interred in the Sai
nt Denis Basilica. He was succeeded by his son, Robert II.

For most of the middleages, the land we know to-day as France was neith

y, Clovis united many tribes into a singleFrankish kingdom. Following Cl
ovis' death in 511, the kingdom was split up among his four sons accordi

Hugh's first wife was Eadhild, a sister of the English king, Athelsta

on of nearly all the region between the Loire and the Seine, correspondi
ng to the ancient Neustria, with the exception of the territory ceded to t

emer) from England in 936, but in the same year Hugh married Hedwige, (w
ho was daughter of King Henry I of Germany and sisterof the emperor Ot
to the Great) and soon quarrelled with Louis.
Hugh even paid homage to Otto, and supported him in his struggle against L
ouis. When Louis fell into the hands of the Normans in 945, he was hand

King of France, 988-1031
He was educated at Reims under the French scholar Gerbert, who later became Pope Sylvester II. Pope Gregory V (died 999) excommunicated him and annulled his marriage, which was considered incestuous by the church. In 1003, Robert submitted to the pope and married the daughter of the marquis of Provence. He recognized Hugh, the eldest of his sons, as his successor. After Hugh's death in 1025, the other sons, aided by their mother, revolted. Robert was still fighting them at the time of his own death. Robert was called 'The Pious' because of his humility and charity. He was also esteemed as a soldier and ruler.

King of France, 1031-1060, Duke of Burgundy, Count of Paris
King of France (1031-60), son of King Robert II and grandson of Hugh Capet, founder of the Capetian dynasty. From the beginning of his reign, he was occupied with putting down rebellions led by members of his family and other French nobles. Between 1035 and 1047, he assisted his nephew, William, duke of Normandie, later William the Conqueror, king of England, in establishing William's authority over rebellious Norman nobles. Henry later grew jealous of William's power and waged unsuccessful war against him in 1054 and 1058. Henry was succeeded by his son Philip I.

Count of Paris and Marquis of Anjou
Robert the Strong (died September 15, 866) was a count of Tours. He was no
minated by Charles the Bald missus dominicus for the Tours and Angers regi
ons in 853. After a rebellion against Charles II in 855, he became duke f
or the region between Seine and Loire. From this time he was responsible f
or fighting against Normans and Britons, and he eventually met his demi
se in 866 fighting the Normans in the Battle of Brissarthe.
He was possibly married to Adelaide, daughter of Louis the Pious and Ermen
garde of Hesbaye. Robert was the father of Odo, Count of Paris and Robe
rt I of France, who both became King of Western Francia. Robert was the gr
eat-grandfather of Hugh Capet and thus the ancestor of all the Capetians.
Robert the Strong, Duke of Neustria, Count of Paris and Marquis of Anjou
Died, slain at Brisarte on July 25, 866
Robert married a sister of Count Adelhelm of Leon and they had the followi

is
First of the Robertian line
Robert I (c. 865 - June 15, 923), king of Western Francia, or king of t
he Franks, was the younger son of Robert the Strong, count of Anjou, and t
he brotherof Odo, or Eudes, who became king of the western Franks in 888.
He was present at the Siege of Paris in 885. Appointed by Odo ruler of sev
eral counties, including the county of Paris, and abbot in commendam of ma
ny abbeys, Robert also secured the office of duke of the Franks, a milita
ry dignity of high importance. He did not claim the crown of Western Franc
ia when his brother died in 898; but recognizing the supremacy of the Caro
lingian king, Charles III, the Simple, he was confirmed in his offices a
nd possessions, after which he continued to defend northern Francia from t
he attacks of the Normans.
The peacebetween the king and his powerful vassal was not seriously distu
rbed until about 921. The rule of Charles, and especially his partiality f
or a certain Hagano, had aroused some irritation; and, supported by ma
ny of the clergy and by some of the most powerful of the Frankish noble
s, Robert took up arms, drove Charles into Lorraine, and was himself crown
ed king of the Franks at Reims on June 29, 922. Collecting an army, Charl
es marched against the usurper, andon June 15 923, in a stubborn and sang
uinary battle near Soissons, Robert was killed, according to one traditi
on in single combat with his rival.
Familyand children
Robert was married two times.
With Aelis he had two daughters:
1. Emma of France (894 – 935), married Rudolph, Duke of Burgundy.
2. Hildebrante of France (895 – 931), married Herbert II of Vermandois.
With Beatrix of Vermandois, daughter of Herbert I of Vermandois he had a s
on Hugh the Great, duke of the Franks, and his grandson was Hugh Capet, ki
ng of France.
Robert married about 895 to Beatrice de Vermandois, daughter of Hubert (I
), Count of Senlis and Vermandois and a descendant of Charlemagne.

For most of the middleages, the land we know to-day as France was neith

ng the Franks, Visigoths and Burgundians. At the end of the fifth centur
y, Clovis united many tribes into a singleFrankish kingdom. Following Cl
ovis' death in 511, the kingdom was split up among his four sons accordi

ed a Frankish empire covering what is to-day France andGermany; but it t
oo was split up after the death of his son Louis (I) "the Pious" in 840.
The election of Hugh Capet as king in 987 began the Capetian Dynasty w
hich ruled France for much of the middle ages. However, the actual roy

Hugh, The Great (d. 956), was duke of the Franks and count ofParis, s

Hugh's first wife was Eadhild, a sister of the English king, Athelsta

on of nearly all the region between the Loire and the Seine, correspondi
ng to the ancient Neustria, with the exception of the territory ceded to t
he Normans in 911. He took a very active partin bringing Louis IV (d'Outr
emer) from England in 936, but in the same year Hugh married Hedwige, (w
ho was daughter of King Henry I of Germany and sisterof the emperor Ot
to the Great) and soon quarrelled with Louis.
Hugh even paid homage to Otto, and supported him in his struggle against L
ouis. When Louis fell into the hands of the Normans in 945, he was hand
ed over to Hugh, who released him in 946 only on condition that he shou
ld surrender the fortress of Laon. At the council of Ingelheim (948) Hu

On the death of Louis IV, Hugh was one of the first to recognize Lotha
