Edmund II or Eadmund II (c. 988/993 – November 30, 1016), King of Engla
nd from April 23 to November 30, 1016, was surnamed "Ironside" for his eff
orts to fend off the Danish invasion led by King Canute.
Born to King Æthelred II and his first wife, Ælflaed of Northumbria, Edmu
nd wasthe second son. He had three brothers, the elder being Æthelstan, a
nd the younger two being Ædred and Ecgbert. His mother was dead by 996, a
nd his fatherremarried twice more.
Æthelstan died in 1014, leaving Edmund as heir. A power-struggle began bet
ween Edmund and his father, and in 1015 King Æthelred had two of Edmund
's allies, Sigeferth and Morcar, executed. Edmund then took Sigeferth's wi
dow, Ældgyth, from the nunnery where she had been imprisoned and married h
er in defiance of his father. During this time, Canute the Great attack
ed England with his forces.

Royal and military history
Upon the death of Æthelred II, who had earlier been stricken ill, on Apr
il 23, 1016, with little support from the Londinian nobility, Edmund succe
eded to the throne.Canute, however, enjoyed greater support throughout En
gland, especially fromthe Southampton nobility.
When Edmund forcefully recovered Wessex from Canute’s previous invasi
on in 1015, Canute responded by laying siege to London; however, Edmund
’s defense was successful. Despite the victory, conflict continued until E
dmund was defeated, but not killed, on October 18 by Canute at Ashingd
on in Essex. The site of the battle is given as Assandun in the Anglo-Sax
on Chronicle, and recent research suggests that this in fact refers to Ash
don, in north Essex, some two miles to the east of Saffron Walden. After t
he battle the two kings negotiated a peace in which Edmund kept Wessex whi
le Canuteheld the lands north of the River Thames. In addition, they agre
ed that if one of them should perish, territories belonging to the deceas
ed would be ceded to the living.
Death
On November 30, 1016, King Edmund II died of natural causes in Oxford or L
ondon, and his territories were ceded to Canute who then became king of En
gland. While unverified, some suggest Edmund was stabbed in the bowels whi
le attending the privy, and thus, was assassinated by Canute. Edmund was b
uried at Glastonbury Abbey in Somerset.
Heirs
Edmund had two children by Ældgyth: Edward the Exile and Edmund, who bo
th escaped to Hungary.

Edward the Exile (1016 – February 1057), son of King Edmund Ironside a
nd of Ealdgyth, gained the name of "Exile" from his life spent mostly f
ar from the England of his forefathers. When only a few months old, he w
as sent by the usurper Canute to be murdered in Denmark, rather than on En
glish soil. Instead,he was secretely brought to Kiev and then made his w
ay to Hungary. On hearing the news of his being alive, Edward the Confess
or recalled him to England and made him his heir. However, Edward the Exi
le died shortly after his return, causing a succession dispute that ultima
tely led to the Norman Conquest of England.
The paternity of his wife Agatha is debated: the medieval sources agree th
at she was a sister of Hungarian Queen, and disagree as to other detail
s. The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle and Florence of Worcester's "Chronicon ex chr
onicis" describe Agatha as a blood relative of the Henry III, Holy Roman E
mperor. Based on these sources, prominent genealogist Szabolcs de Vajay po
pularized an idea that she was the daughter of the Emperor's elder (uterin
e) half-brother, Liudolf, Count of Friesland (1962). Agatha's rare Greek n
ame was recently interpreted in favour of a different version, expound
ed by Geoffrey Gaimarand Roger of Howden, that her father was a "Russi
an king", i.e. Yaroslav theWise.
Their children included Edgar Ætheling and Saint Margaret of Scotland.

ESTATE: On 3 September 1638, "Francis Godfrey is granted twenty acres of lands lying on the norwest side of Greene's Harbour River, and a garden place at Stony River, near Edward Bumpasse, to be viewed & laid forth for him by Mr. Collier, Jonathan Brewster, & W[illia]m Basset (which land was, the 28th October, 1640, by them laid forth as aforesaid ...)" [PCR 1:95, 135].
On the "lastof February 1644" (probably 28 February 1644/5), "Roger Chaundler of Duxborrow" sold to "Francis Godfrey of the same" twenty-five acres "lying on the northern side of the freshet that runneth into Greene's Harbour" [PCR 12:109].
On 26 February 1648[/9?], "Constant Sowthworth of Duxbery and Thomas Sowthworth ofPlymouth his brother" sold to "Francis Godfray of the town of Duxbery ... carpenter ... a certain parcel of upland ground containing an hundred acres or thereabouts be it more or less lying at the North River" [PCR 121:163]. On 10 December 1650, "Francis Godfry of Marshfield ... carpenter" sold to "Anthony Eames and Mark Eames the son of the said Anthony both of them of Hingham ... a certainparcel of land containing one hundred acres be it more or less together with one dwelling house upon it with all the appurtenances belonging thereunto lying upon the North River" [PCR 12:206].
In his will, dated 26 February 1666[/7]and proved 29 October 1669, "Francis Godfrey, aged inhabitant of the town of Bridgwater," made "my wife Elizabeth Godfrey my sole executrix, and Mr. James Browne of Rehoboth and Samuell Edson of Bridgwater my overseers," and bequeathed to "my wife Elizabeth Godfrey my whole complete purchase of lands, both alreadylaid out and to be laid out, with all the immunities and privileges belonging thereunto, with my dwelling house and outhouses ..., my lands laid out lying and situate as followeth: forty acres of upland lying at a place ususally called Salsbury Plain running cross the way ususally called the Bay Path, and twenty-four acres of of upland lying upon the river usually called John's River ..., twenty acres of upland lying upon the Town's River ..., ten acres of upland more joining to my meadow land upon the Town's River, two acres of meadow land more or less lying in the meadow called Flaggy Meadow, two acres and an half more ... joining on the one side to Arthur Harris his meadow and on the other side to John Carye Senior, and one share more at the north end of the plain called Salsbury Plain"; to "my grandchild John Carye a complete purchase of lands both upland and meadows both already laid out or to be laid out, only I have exchanged six acres of upland with him lying to the lands at my house for six acres lyingnext to his land at John's River ... the six acres of land at my house belonging now to my house being given the my wife Elizabeth aforesaid"; to "my daughter Elizabeth Cary," two cows, two canvas sheets and "my great Bible"; to "my grandchild Elizabeth Cary," one heifer; to "my wife Elizabeth Godfrey, one broad and one narrow axe, one handsaw, one hatchet, one square, one drawing knife, oneadze, one hammer, one pair of chisels, two augers, one mortising auger, one smaller auger, three plains, one jointer, one smoothi

Paul, sailor and fisherman, from Sheviock, co. Cornwall, where one Paul m, Richord Earle 29 Oct. 1634, came first to Richmond's Island in 1638(fished with Winter's company, 1639-40) and was there in July 1641; his w. ment. in account, 1639. He came again in 1643-4 on a fishing voyage in the Hercules, Capt. Wm. Hingston, under a two yr. contract, and later was at Saco. Lost in a fishing disaster 1654. If any w. came over, she is unrecorded.
Paul was one of John Winter's men at Richmond Island in 1639 as his wife was paid 5/. They had run up quite a debt at the "company store' as he owed L6/6 "for Commodities in ye house", L14/6 "for wine", L9/8/6 "for so much pd him by Mr. Trelawne with adventure", 11d "for sider & oyle", 9/9 "for aquavite at his first Coming over" (1) Paul was one of the men who agreed to stay after their three year term of service had expired. On 6 Apr. 1643: "Paul Michell of Sheviock in the Countie of Cornewall, Sayler" was again indentured to Trelawny and Winter. (2) Paul settled in Saco, opposite Richmond Island, after leaving Trelawny's service.
Paul died in Boston evidently being drowned along with Jonathan Hollicu, Roger Hunnewell, and Jonathan Rowland as the administration was granted 5 Apr. 1654: "yt Robert Booth, Rich: Hitchcocke, Hen: Waddocke & Will: Scadlocke, are impowered as administrators to take ye goods of Jon Hollicu, Roger Hunnewell, Paul Michaell & Jon Rowland into yr hands & to receave all debts due unto Jon Sparke & Christopher Hobbs, wt they can make appere as justly due unto them, for there disburts upon yr fishing vioage & wt shall remaine in yor hands, you are to returne an account: yrof unto ye next County Court.:(3)
None of the information available on Paul connects him with any of the people listed. Perhaps further research will prove this link. There is a tradition in the Freeport family that Christopher came to this country with the name of Bechwith and that he was adopted by the Mitchell family and therefore took their name.(4)

Christopher had a house at Brave Boat Harbor in Kittery by 1665 as on 22 Apr. 1665 Francis Morgan and his wife Sarah, widow and administratrix of Capt. John Mitchell, sold to John Cutt of Portsmouth: "one Prcell of Marsh ground, scituate & being neare to Christopher Michells house at Bray boate Harbour...which land was formerly bought of one John Lander." The boundary was a point of dispute between Christopher and his sister-in-law as Philip Atwell, Christopher Mitchell and John Billings were summoned to court: "at the Poynt to answere their tumultuous carages about the laying out & bounding a pcell of Marsh given unto Fran: Morgan by execution." On 10 Sept. 1672 Philip Atwell was fined "16s...for his contempt in Cutting of the lyne...& Christopher Michell and John Billine 5s a peece and with an admonition are discharged."
Christopher had a grant from the town of Kittery of 30 acres in Aug. 1674 adjoining his house at Brave Boat Harbor. He signed the petition to the General Court to allow Isaac Wells to preach. He was on the grand jury in 1678.

William Noyes, son of Robert Noyes, was born probably at Cholderton, near Salisbury, Wiltshire, about 1568, died
there in the spring of 1622 (estate inv. 30 Apr.); married about 1594 Anne Stephens, daughter of Nicholas Stephen of
Burdrop Manor, born about 1575, buried at Cholderton 7 Mar. 1657-8, 82y, sister of Dorothy (Stephens) Parker,
mother of the Rev. Robert Parker (see Wheeler, History of Stonington, Connecticut).
Noyes received his BA degree from University College Oxford 31 May 1592. In 1601 he was appointed rector at
Cholderton, a post he held until 1621, shortly before his death. His widow was appointed administrix 28 May 1622.
AnneÕs nephew Robert Parker, called "the father of non-conformists," went to Holland in exile, and later came to
Massachusetts; he did not marry. Anne's will (18 Mar. 1655, 20 Apr. 1658) named her "two sons now in New
England," and her sons-in-law Thomas Kent and Robert Reade, her executor.

who survived him; no ch. were named in his will.
ii.Rev. Nathan, b. in 1597, d. Salisbury, Wilts, 6 Sept. 1651, 54y; m. Mary ---- : 5 ch. BA Lincoln College,
Oxford, 26 Oct. 1616; in 1621 succeeded his father as rector aat Cholderton.
iii.John, b. c1600, res. Newton, Wilts, in 1660; m. ---- ; one son.
iv.daughter; b. say 1604; m. Robert Read of East Cholderton, execÕr in 1655 of estate of Ann (Stephens) Noyes.
v.Rev. James1, b. in 1608, d. Newbury MA 22 Oct. 1656, 48y; m. in England c1634 Sarah Brown, who d.
Newbury 13 Sept. 1691, dau. of Joseph Brown of Southampton, Hants: 9 ch. named in will. Graduate of
Brasenose College, Oxford, in 1627;James came to Massachusetts in 1634, and served as pastor at Newbury
MA and at Mystic CT (see Cotton Mather, Magnalia). His Newbury home is maintained as an historical site.
