Research Notes: Husband - Governor Thomas Prence Second
!Initial source: Two family group sheets in the FGRA collection of the Family History Library, Salt Lake City, Utah. The one of the first marriage was submitted by Muzetta P. Burton, 24 W. N. Temple, Salt Lake City, Utah. Her sources: Mayflower Desc. vols 1-4-14; R8D10 Eng. Ancs. p136; Pioneers of Mass. (Pope) p372; Savage Vols 1-3; FFH 2 Microfilm. (This last may be 'Family of the Pilgrims' by Shaw). Written on the sheet, (probably by Dorothy D. Hall, now deceased), was: 'Winthrop Fleet of 1636 - Banks p71 - Wife #3 Apphia Quicke daughter of Wm Quicke of London, wife of Samuel Freeman divorced him & married (2) Tho. Prence, Jr.' The sheet of the second marriage was submitted by Huberta F. Robison, 1806 A Bonita, Berkeley 4, Calif. Her sources were 'Hist. Cape Cod. p 363 and New Eng. Reg. Vol. 6 p 234. The FGRA sheets named children of the first wife as Thomas, Rebecca, Hannah and Mercy; those of the second wife, Jane, Mary, Sarah, Elizabeth and Judith. 'The Great Migration Begins', a NEHGS study project published in 1995, says 'Establishing the probable date of marriage for Apphia and Thomas Prence has significant implications for the parentage of Prence's last three children. Apphia is last seen as a Freeman 1 July 1644, about a year before the birth of Prence's seventh child, and at the end of a six-year hiatus in the birthdates of his chidren. She is called 'Mrs. Freeman' as late as 15 October 1646 in a deed where she appears as an abutter, but this does not necessarily imply that she had not remarried by this date, since it was not unusual for archaic bounds to be used in this sort of description [Sandwich Land Records 1:78].' Apphia may have been mother of his last three children, Judith, 1645, Elizabeth, 1647, and Sarah, 1648. I have temporarily removed the last three children and changed the data on the others to fit with this source.

[Winthrop Papers 3:177].' LDS proxy temple ordinances are from the FGRA sheet and that of her parents.

!See notes of father. The FGRA sheet has him as first child, born about 1625 but 'The Great Migration...' shows Rebecca first, 'living at time of cattle division in 1627'', and Thomas second, saying '...in the 1627 Plymouth division of cattle is a second Thomas Prence, inserted at the end of the tenth lot; this may be the son Thomas Prence, born about the time this list was compiled, and added separately from his family...'. It also says '...(an appendix to the fifth edition of Morton's Memorial refers to letters from the widow and daughter of this Thomas Prence, in London, to his father, the immigrant [pp. 424-25]; these letters have apparently never been published, but copies of some of them are held by the Massachusetts Historical Society).' 'The Great Migration...' gives a list of the heirs of Thomas Prence who on 10 June 1676, through their attorney Josiah Winslow, sold to Constant Southworth, treasurer and agent of Plymouth Colony, 'all that our dwelling house, messuage or tenement' in Plymouth 'at a place commonly called Plain Dealing'. Among the names were Susanna Prence at Catheren Gate near the Tower in London..., singlewoman'. [Plymouth Colony Land Records 4:124] The FGRA sheet of his parents shows no marriage but a year of death, 1672. 'Dawes-Gates...' says he died 'before March 13, 1672, in England; m. (____).' Sources given, 'Mayflower Descendant' III, 203-16, VI, 157-63; XXIV, 129-30; 'NEHGR', LIX, 217; LXVI, 357-8. LDS proxy temple ordinances are from the FGRA sheet, sealing of marriage from the LDS IGI.

!See notes for her father and husband. The FGRA sheet of her and husband had birth about 1625, death about 1650. That of her father had the same birth but death 'before 18 July 1651'. Both had the same marriage. The FGRA sheet of her and husband had LDS proxy baptism 'bef 1872' but the one of her parents had the one shown here. Both had the endowment date shown here. They were also on her TIB card, baptism and endowment done by Hannah T. Wells, 'fd'. Proxy sealing to parents was also on the TIB card. There was another card with later proxy ordinances.

It and 'The Great Migration...' has her first husband's surname 'Mayo', and the latter gives the source of her first marriage, 'Plymouth Colony Records' 8:26; of the second, 'Mayflower Descendant' 14:193-203. General Notes: Wife - Mary Wentworth Love
The maiden name of William Brewster's wife has not been proven. The claim it was Mary Wentworth rests solely on the fact that Mary Wentworth happened to live somewhat close to William Brewster in Scrooby, Nottingham. That is very shaky evidence to say the least. Further, it has been proposed that William Brewster may have married Mary Wyrall, but the evidence is just as flimsy for that marriage. There are no fewer than seven marriages from 1590-1610 that have been located in parish registers showing a William Brewster marrying a Mary. All, however, have been satisfactorily eliminated as probable candidates for the William and Mary (Brewster) who came on the Mayflower. So at present, there is no evidence to document who William Brewster's wife Mary actually was.

It says he came in 1621 on the 'Fortune' and 'evidently m. 1st at Leyden an unknown wife who was buried there May 10, 1619, and who may have buried a child there November 27, 1610.' Duane Josephson's 'Emigrant Ancestors' says she was Betje (Betja) (Babnits) Rabnitz and that they were married before 1610. However, he'd be only 17 years old. 'The Great Migration...' gives the source of his birth as 'Mayflower Descendant 1:7, doesn't give his death nor mention a first marriage and gave the source of his marriage to Lucretia Oldham as 'Mayflower Descendant' 1:8. PASSENGER ON MAYFLOWER - 1620.
Love Brewster was the son of Elder William Brewster and his wife, Mary (possibly Wentworth) Brewster. He came to New England with his parents on the ship "Mayflower" in 1620, and the family settled in Plymouth, Massachusetts. Love married, Sarah Collier, the daughter of William Collier and his wife, Jane. Love and Sarah settled in Duxbury, Massachusetts. He was also one of the original proprietors of Bridgewater, Massachusetts although it is believed that he never lived there. Love died not long after the date of his will; October 1, 1650. Following his death, Sarah married Richard Park of Cambridge who in turn died in 1665. Following her second husband's death, Sarah returned to Duxbury where she died on April 26, 1691.

!See notes for the father. There was no gender nor birthdate in the record of death given by 'The Great Migration...' from 'The England and Holland of the Pilgrims' by Henry Martyn Dexter and Morton Dexter, 1906; rpt. William (abt 1566 - 1644) was the son of William Brewster Sr. and Mary Smythe. William Brewster Sr. was Bailiff of the Archbishop of York's estate and Master of the Queen's Postes (postmaster), living at Scrooby Manor House in Nottingham, England, where royal guests were often entertained. William Jr. attended Cambridge University, noted for its radical, religious ideas. He spent several years in the service of Queen Elizabeth's representative in the Netherlands, a country known for its religious tolerance. When his father died in 1590, young William was appointed to take his place as 'Master of the Postes,' but his spiritual views were sympathetic to the Separatist movement and he began to attend John Smith's Separatists church at Gainsborough where he met William Bradford of Austerfield. When John Smith and his group emigrated to Holland seeking a more tolerant environment, Scrooby Manor House became the meeting place of the Separatists. In 1607, Brewster resigned his official position, but pressure from the authorities increased and Brewster fled to Holland himself. While there, Brewster taught at Leiden University while William Bradford found work as a weaver. Brewster published several Puritan pamphlets, which were smuggled to England and declared treasonous by the government of King James I. Brewster was forced into hiding. Intolerance had found its way to Holland. For the Separatists, Brewster and Bradford in particular, the idea of spreading their religious views to a whole New World began to take hold and in 1620, that idea became reality with the voyage on the Mayflower and the establishment of Plymouth Colony. William Brewster was selected to lead the expedition. He became the much loved and respected Reverend Elder of the Pilgrims' church in Plymouth and, in his early fifties, was the oldest of the Pilgrims to celebrate the First Thanksgiving. Very little is known of his wife Mary, including her maiden name. The couple had five surviving children: Jonathan, Patience, Love, Fear, and Wrestling. (Love and Wrestling were sons; Patience and Fear were daughters).
THE MAYFLOWER COMPACT, 11 NOV 1620
The compact was an agreement signed by 41 of the male passengers of the Mayflower, just before going ashore, and called for a just system of government to be instituted in the new colony. The first listing of the compact's signers appeared in 1669 in "New England's Memorial" by Nathaniel Morton, secretary to the Colony Court. Most historians believe the list does not represent the sequence of signing by the individuals, contending that it is highly unlikely, for example, that John Alden, a hired cooper, would have been invited to sign ahead of more esteemed members of the party such as Samuel Fuller or Richard Warren.
