General Notes: Husband - Thomas Witham
Thomas probably lived near Lobster Cove.
Thomas arrived from England some time in the early 1600's.e know he settled in Gloucester, MA, and eventually died there in 1653. We don't know who he married but we know he had a son named Henry. We don't know when Henry was born, but the record gets clearer..we do know he married Sarah Somes on June 15, 1655 in Gloucester. We also know that Sarah was the daughter of Morris Somes and Margarie (???). And we know that Sarah was born June 14, 1643 in Gloucester, and died on May 11, 1689, also in Gloucester. And we know that two years later, Henry remarried, to Lydia Youngblood Griffin, on October 23, 1691, in Gloucester. Lydia was born in Annisquam, MA and died on November 1, 1702, in Gloucester. Henry passed away seven months earlier, on April 17, 1702 in Gloucester.
History of Gloucester...
" ... the name Thomas Wathen in our county records called by me Witham; and it was suggested in the History that he might have been father of Henry. The inventory of estate of Thomas Wathen, "a cote and a pare of biches and a doblet," L1.15s, and tools, L1, was returned by Zebulon Hill and Stephen Glover, both of Gloucester, 4th mo., 1653. "

"No other Witham but Henry appears among the early settlers of New England. I find no grant of land to him till the general grant of six acre lots in 1688; but it is certain that his son Thomas sold to Joseph York, in July 1701, before his father's death, eighteen acres lying near Lobster Cove, that belonged to him. His name first occurs in the record of his marriage, June 15, 1665, to Sarah, daughter of Morris Somes, who died May 11, 1689. He next married, Oct. 23, 1691, Lydia Griffin, who died Nov. 1, 1702. He died April 17, 1702."

Elizabeth was employed for a time in the Burness home in Lochlie as a servant, and that is where she and Robert Burns met. She returned to her home and husband March 1784 when the Burness family moved away to Mossgiel, but our poet must have paid her a visit in 1784 for a 'wee sleep-over'.
