The Richardson Memorial by John Adams Vinton, 1876 printed by Brown
Thurston& Co., Portland, Maine (1876), pg. 504-506:
THOMAS RICHARDSON,was the youngest of the three brothers of that name,
EZEKIEL, SAMUEL and THOMAS, who united with Edward Convers, Edward
Johnson, John Mousall, William Learned, and others, in the settlement of
Woburn, and the formation of a church there, in 1641. The seven men,
whose names have just been written were the commissioners chosen by the
church in Charlestown, Nov. 5, 1640, to commence the settlement; with the
exception of William Learned was substituted soon after for Thomas
Graves, who had been chosen, but declined taking part in the enterprise.
It is believed that Samuel and Thomas Richardson, who were younger than
Ezekiel, did not come from England, till at least five years after. The
colonists suffered greatly from famine during the first year, and a few
came over till 1633 or later. A list of inhabitants of Charlestown,
dated Jan. 9, 1633-4, doesnot contain the name of Samuel or Thomas
Richardson. The same deficiency exists in a similar list, made one year
after. The first notice we find of either of these brothers, is dated
Feb. 21, 1636, when Mary, the wife of Thomas Richardson united with the
church in Charlestown. Samuel and Thomas Richardson joined said church
the 18th of the 12th month [February], 1637-8; in consequence whereof
they were admitted freemen of the colony, May 2, 1638. Their names are
found on the records of Charlestown for the first time in 1637, when to
each of them the town granted a house-plot, clearly indicating that they
had recently become citizens of the place. The same year, their names
arefor the first time found on the records as citizens of Charlestown.
They doubtless came from England together.
The three brothers were all young. They probably did not marry until
on the eve of embarking for America; Ezekiel in 1630; Samuel and Thomas
in 1635. This is inferred from the dates of the births of their children.
The three brothers had lots assigned them, April 20, 1638, on the
"Misticke Side and above the Ponds," that is, in Malden. The share they
had in the settlement of Woburn, and the organization of the church in
that town, has been sufficiently related in the notices already given of
Ezekiel and Samuel Richardson.
Thomas Richardson died in Woburn, Aug. 28, 1651. There is no will of
his on record. Below is an inventory of his estate foundin the
Middlesex Registry of Probate, dated Sept. 22, 1651, and signed by Edward
Johnson, Edward Converse, John Mousall and Samuel Richardson.
...Total 133.14.4 pounds
Further, the said Thomas Richardson died possessed of one dwelling
house, bard and one hundred acres of land, situate in the Town of Woburn,
of which 25 acres are plowed land, and ten of meadow. Real Estate valued
at 80.0.0 pounds.
Following the inventory, and, it would seem, a part of it, is this
statement:
"He hath left a wife, three sons, and four daughters. The eldest son
is 8 years old; the second, 6 years; and the third, three-quarters [of a
year]. The eldest dau. is 13 years old; the second, 11 years; the third,
4 years; the fourth, 2 years.
The name of the wife of Thomas Richardson was Mary. After his death
she became, Oct. 26, 1655, the second wife of Michael Bacon, senior, who
is said to have come from Ireland, and was on of theoriginal inhabitants
of the town of Woburn, 1641. He was the ancestor of the distinguished
Dr. Leonard Bacon, of New Haven, Ct. Bacon's first wife, also named
Mary, died July 4, 1688. His only son married a dau. of Thomas and Mary
Richardson.

THOMAS RICHARDSON, second son of Thomas and Mary Richardson; born in
Woburn, Oct. 4, 1645; m., first, in Cambridge, Jan. 5, 1666-70, Mary
Stimpson. There were married by the eminent Daniel Gookin, so often
mentioned in the early history of Massachusetts. In those days,
marriage, being regarded as a civil ordinance, was performed by the civil
magistrate. The town records of Cambridge, as copied, call Thomas
Richardson's wife Mary Stevenson. She died June 7, 1690, the mother of
nine children. Second, in Billerica, Dec. 29, 1690, Sarah Patten, widow
of Thomas Patten, of Billerica, who died Jan. 16, 1689-90, aged about
54. They were married by Major Jeremiah Swain.
He removed from Woburn to Billerica, previously known as Shawshin,
about the year 1667; and settled, it is believed, on a large tract of
about nine hundred acres of land, quite in the easterly part of the town,
called the Cambridge School Far, a little west of the Shawshin River, and
north of the present Boston Road. He was a soldier in the company of
Capt. Samuel Gallup in the land expedition to Canada, by way of Albany in
1690, with utterly failed. He was a deputy from Billerica to the General
Court of Massachusetts in 1703 and 1704.
Some time after, he gave to his eldest son,Thomas, a farm near the
Boston Road, now Washington Streety; to Andrew, a farm north of Thomas
and to Nathaniel, a farm north of Andrew. The deed to Andrew is dated
Oct. 14, 1705, and there is a deed to his grandson Thomas, son of Thomas,
dated Feb. 25, 1709-10.
He died in Billerica, Feb. 25, 1720, in his seventy-six year. His
widow Sarah died Nov. 20, 1734

Millinocket – Pauline A. George, 92, died peacefully Saturday, July 30, 2011 at an Orono health care facility. She was born in Berlin, New Hampshire on December 25, 1918, a special gift to her parents, Francis S. and Bambina (Mascetta) Pasquine. She grew up in "Little Italy", surrounded by family and friends and graduated from Stearns High School.
Polly worked at the Corner Drug Store and then for several years at the Great Northern Paper Company. She was a founding member of the Stearns Alumni Association. Having enjoyed many winters in Florida, Polly was always happy to return home. She was fortunate to be born with a caring and generous nature. She loved her family dearly. Although she had no children of her own, she was close to her siblings, nieces, and nephews, especially Mary Ouellette, who looked after all of her needs in her later years. For that reason, she was able to stay in her own home until a year ago.
Polly is survived by several family members too numerous to mention. She spent many happy holidays at the home of her niece, Joyce and Louie Ouellette and children. They will all miss her dearly, but rejoice that she is in the loving arms of her heavenly Father, as has been her wish for some time. Polly will also be missed by her lifelong friend, Delia Cummings.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Willard "PeeWee" George, siblings Angelina Viola, Helen McKinnon, Nicholas Pasquine, Peter Pasquine, Fred Pasquine, and Grace Meehan.
Funeral services will be held 11 A.M. Wednesday, August 3, 2011 at Christ the Divine Mercy Parish of St. Martin of Tours, 19 Colby St., Millinocket with Deacon Danny Watson celebrant. Interment will be at the Millinocket Cemetery. Gifts in memory of Polly may be sent to the Katahdin Area Support Group, 10 Field St., Millinocket, ME 04462, or to New Hope Hospice, P.O. Box 70, Holden, ME 04429. Arrangements are by Lamson Funeral Home, Millinocket.

At the age of 87 years, Mrs. Julia A. Durgin, widow of John N. (sic) Durgin, died about eight o'clock Tuesday evening, at the home of her son, David L. Durgin, 147 Holland street, Lewiston. She had been ill a year, but had been confined to bed only a month. Mrs. Durgin had been a resident of Lewiston about 30 years, coming here soon after the death of her husband. She was born in Parsonfield, her parents being Isaac and Lydia Mason, who had seven children. It is remarkable that all of these children attained the age of over 80 years, except the one who is still living, Thomas Mason of Everett, Mass. Mr. Mason is in excellent health and will, no doubt, live to enjoy life some years. Mrs. Durgin was a staunch Methodist, and was a member of the Park street church, this city. She leaves one son and one brother, mentioned above; three grandsons, Linwood S. and Harold L. Durgin of Lewiston and Melville G. Durgin of Auburn, also one great-grandson, Winslow S. Durgin, Lewiston. The funeral will take place as announced elsewhere and the burial will be at Kezar Falls. Lewiston Evening Journal, March 24, 1910 -------------------------------------------- Mrs. Julia A Durgin, widow of John Durgin, aged 87. Funeral at the home of her son, David L. from the notes of John Howard Wyman - wyman.org:
Went to Alton, Illinois, where he was associated with Elijah Lovejoy
during abolition trouble.
Life Story of Nathan Wyman (son of Seth Wyman) I was born in Bloomfield,
Maine, March 6, 1812, lived with my parents & worked on a farm & attended
school until I was thirteen years old, when my father died. I lived with
my mother that year.At the age of fourteen my mother hired me with
Samuel Bicknell for six months at five dollars per month to work on a
farm. I worked out my time & went home and attended school that winter.
In the Spring, at the age of fifteen, I went to Saco, Maine, to learn the
machinist trade, making looms for the Saco Factory, a business that I had
not the slightest taste for & I ought not to have been put to the trade.
It, half brother John G. Reed was my master mechanic& my mother thought
because he liked the business & made money by it that I could. A most
erroneous idea. God never intended me for a mechanic & it was in vain for
man to try to make one of me. In March, 1830 the Factory burned down &
my brother was thrown out of business & I went back to Bloomfield. My
mother had in the mean time married Dea. Solomon Bixby of Norridgewock,
Maine. I was at that time eighteen years old. I hired out that spring
with my halfbrother Seth of Bloomfield to work on his farm six months at
eight dollars per month. I worked out my time & went to school that
winter. In the spring mybrother Levi Wyman saw me & asked me what I was
going to do that summer. I told him I thought I should hire out to work
on a farm. He said do not do it. You ought to go to school two years.
Come & board with me at Skowhegan Village & go to the Academy & you shall
be welcome to your board by doing the chores night & morning. I took a
week to consider the matter & consulted my guardian in the meantime & he
advised me by all means to accept the proposition. At the and of the
week I went to board with my brother & commenced attending the Academy
under the instruction of Rev. Weston B. Adams. I was then nineteen years
old. In September following my brother & his wife and Brother Jewett &
wife, started to visit Brother Abel Wyman, living in Walworth, Wayne Co.,
New York. Brother Levi was taken sick at Saratoga Springs on his return
and died there Nov. 13, 1831. His wife returned soon after & I made it
my home with her till I became of age. I was going to school that winter
but a man came from Harmony after a Teacher & the Preceptor recommended
me to him & Ireluctantly hired with him to teach 3 months at thirteen
dollars per month, about the highest wages paid at that day for
experienced teachers. I had a very hard school over 80 scholars, some of
them older than I was. I finished myschool & received my $39 cash, the
most money I had ever had. I felt rich asa nabob. previous services for
farm labor was paid in farmers currency, neat stock, appraised off by
neighbors. I went back & boarded with my sister-in-law & attended the
Academy that summer & fall & taught two schools the following winter. One
of 10 weeks in Bloomfield & one of 8 weeks at Norridgewock, both at $l5
per month.
I was then 21 years of age & I went to Old Town to seek my fortune. I
first hired out to help build the road from Old Town to Upper Stillwater.
It was a very wet muddy spring. The musketoes & black flies very thick &
very voracious & the sun shone very hot when it did not rain & would warp
the covering of our camp (hemlock bark) & I would get wet through when it
reMained in the night & I concluded after six weeks experience road
building that I would try something else. I accordingly went to Old Town
Village &hired out with John K. Gilman as Clerk and General overseer of
his business,Lumbering, which included the whole operation, cutting, &
hauling & driving for him to Bangor for a share of the profits. His

General Notes: Husband - Henry Wyman
History of Winthrop, Maine by Everett S. Stackpole, 1825,
pg 67:
The Road from the Beaver Dam by Mr. Henry Wyman's and Mr. Waugh's to
Waugh's Landing atthe mill-pond was re laid this year, 1775.
pg 81-82:
The Revolutionary War came on and the town felt its poverty. Hence in
1776 it was voted not to raise any money for preaching nor for schools.
At the same time it was voted to"employ Mr. Mores [Moore of
Pownalborough] to get Mr. Thayer to preach in this town four Sabbaths'.
This looks like a plea for home missions. The same year Micajah Dudley,
Stephen Dudley, Jabez Clough, Moses Ayer Benjamin Fairbanks, Timothy
Foster Jr., Stephen Norton and Daniel Dudley were exempted from paying
for ministerial tax. All but Fairbanks and Foster lived in what is now
Readfield. The reason for the exemption was not stated. It was probably
not on account of military service in the Revolution, but because they
were not in sympathy with the Congregational church, that was formed that
year. Perhaps they leaned toward the Baptists that were then making
quite a stir in New England. The Congregational church was organized 4
Sept. 1776. Rev. Samuel Eaton of Harpswell, Rev. Thomas Moore of
Pownalborough and Rev. Thurston Whiting of Newcastle came by invitation
to an Ecclesiastical Council. No formal creed was drawn up, but a
Covenant, affirming adherence to the doctrines of the Westminster
Confession of Faith, or Shorter Catechism, was signed by twenty-six
persons. Probably most of these had been members of Congregational
churches in the towns whence they came. The lack of specifications in
creed concealed the Calvinistic doctrines that were then much in dispute
and have since been sloughed off by Congregational Churches. The moral
and religious tone of the covenant is high and to be highly commended.
Behavior counts for more than opinions.
The names of the covenanters were Jonathan Whiting, Elias Taylor,
Joseph Stevens, Nathaniel Floyd, Samuel Frost, John Chandler, Pease
Clark, Thomas Allen, Jonathan Davenport, Amos Stevens, Sarah Floyd,
Abigail Stanley, Sarah Delano, Abigail Hall, Dorcas Baker, Mary Stevens,
Ann Halland Susanna Lambert.
Five days later the town voted to meet half the time forpublic worship
at the house of Henry Wyman and the other half of the time atthe house
of Squire Bishop, "till the committee can fix a place in the center."
Mr. Wyman lived on Lot No. 99 in what is now Readfield, near the
residence of Henry D. Whittier.
pg 152:
Henry Wyman, son of Mathew and Abigail (Willard) Wyman, born in
Lancaster, Mass., 16 March 1742, served as private in Capt. John Blunt's
Co Col. Samuel McCobb's Regt. from 28 June to 28 Sept. 1779, in the
Penobscot Expedition. In 1787 the town allowed him one pound for going
to Bagaduce. He lived in what is now Readfield. He married (1) Lydia
Bruce, (2) Sarah Mason.
pg 175:
DIVISION INTO TWO TOWNS
The separation of Readfield from Winthrop was a geographical
necessity. Efforts were made to build meeting houses for the
accommodation of scatter inhabitants, but no location was satisfactory to
some. Hence the repeated attempt to divide the town into two parishes. .
. .
On the fourteenth of May, 1790, John Hubbard )fatherof Governor
Hubbard) and Joshua Bean, selectmen, issued their warrant for a town
meeting to be held at the house of Henry Wyman, "to see if it be the
minds of the town to divide into two separate towns or parishes and in
what manner, if they chose to divide". Wyman lived in the north part of
town and near the proposed line of division. Thirty-seven voted in favor
of division into two towns and Henry Wyman alone voted against it. . . .
