Charles 'Martel', Mayor Of The Palace Of Austrasia ruled the Merovingian F
ranks from A.D. 719 to 741. He used only the title of Mayor of the Palac
e, but he actually had the power of a king. Most of the lawful Frankish ki
ngs of this period were weak. In 732, Charles defeated the invading Mosle
ms in the famous Battle of Tours near Poitiers. For repeatedly attacking t
he Moslems, Charles later received the title of Martel, meaning theHamme
r. He built an army of mounted men by seizing church estates. Charles supp
orted Saint Boniface in his reform of the Frankish church.

He married Rotrude of Treves. Charles was born circa 688. He was the s
on of Pepin II (?) of Heristal and Aupais (?). Charles was ruler of the Fr
anks from 719, progenitor of the Carolingian dynasty, and grandfather to C
harlemagne. He was the illegitimate son of Pepin IIof Heristal and in 7
14 he was chosen Duke by the Austrasian (eastern) Franks, defeated the Neu
strain (western) Franks in 716, and in 719 became 'mayor ofthe palac
e' of Austrasia and real ruler of all the Frankish kingdom. He earned h
is nickname by his defeat of the Moors in a desperate battle at Tours, ne
ar Poiters, in 732, thus turning back the tide of Arab conquest in Europ
e, then drove the Saracens out of Burgundy and Languedoc (737). When he di
ed in 741 he left the Frankish kingdom to be divided between his sons Carl
oman and Pepin III the Short. Charles died in 741.

First white child born in Delaware County, NY.
At age three, John I. Harper and his family narrowly escaped death. John I. Harper's father attained the rank of Colonel during the Revolutionary War as a patriot. On August 8, 1777, a detachment of 300 Tories and Indians were commanded to invade Harpersfield.1,2 An Oneida Indian in the invading party, who had been friendly with Colonel Harper in the past, slipped away from the camp during the night, and informed Colonel Harper of the planned attack.1,2 Colonel Harper put toddler John I. Harper, his wife and infant daughter (Rebecca) on the only horse, and he and the other children all walked through the night in a heavy rain arriving to safety at the town of Sharon, Schoharie County, New York at noon the next day.1 Their home was burned to ashes the next day and the Grist Mill the Harpers had built was destroyed, but the family was saved.1,3
The Harper family retreated to Middleburgh in Schoherie County, New York, and from there John I. Harper was sent with his mother and siblings by his father to East Windsor, Connecticut to be with relatives.2 From there, Colonel Harper raced to Schoharie, New York where he gained his fame defending the settlement during the war in a 1772 stone fort that still stands and honors him today.2
In October of 1816 at age 42, John I. Harper and his wife Amanda purchased 110 acres at the riverbank in Lot Two, Gore number 6 in the Connecticut Western Reserve, of what is now Valley View.4 The 1820 United States Census lists him in Independence Township as a farmer, along with his brother Archibald. One of their neighbors at that time was Abraham Garfield, the father of the not yet born President James Garfield.8 John I. Harper's brother Archibald died September 25, 1825.6
John I. Harper was elected as one of the three Trustees of Independence Township in 1834.9 Valley View was a part of Independence Township at that time. These are the oldest existing records of the Township, as earlier records were destroyed by fire.9 John I. Harper died on August 26, 1849 at age 75 and is buried in the family cemetery he had established on his property.10

Immigrated with his family to South Carolina from Germany in 1766 at
the approximate age of 12.
Andreas Meyer (known as Andrew Myers in Nova Scotia) was born not
later than 1754 in Germany according to a petition to the Royal
Council of South Crolina dated Dec 1, 1772 in which he states that he
was a poor German who came to South Carolina with the assistance of
the British Crown but had not received any grant of land up to that
time. He very probably was a lad under 12 years of age making up a
part of the Andrew Myers family that arrivedin Charleston on the
[IT::IT]Frankland[IT::IT] in mid-January 1766, sailing from Rotterdam.
His father, Andreas Miers, of District Ninety Six, was a memberof
Col. Baily Cheney's Regiment of Ninety Six Militia from October 12,
1781 to April 7, 1782, died at Charleston and had a coffin ordered for
him on June 5, 1782.
Andrew Myers, Jr, was granted 100 acres in District 96 in 1772, then
the allotment for a single person. According to his claim before the
Loyalist Claims Commission meeting in Halifax, his family owned about
400 acres in District 96 (100 inherited from his father, 100 granted
to him, 100 from his sonand 100 from his wife), of which he had
cleared about 12 acres. On this landhe had 15 cattle, 3 horses and
some hogs, and was growing wheat with a harvest of some 60 bushels.
When the British re-occupied Charleston in 1780 and moved their forces
into the interior of South Carolina, Andrew Myers (recorded as Andrew
Miers, Jr) enlisted as a private in Capt. Henry Rudolph's Company,
Col. John Cotton's Regiment of the Stevenson's Creek Militia, 96
Brigade, then based at Dorchester, South Carolina, in which he served
from June 14 to December13, 1780. When the British presence in the
South Carolina backlands was madeuntenable by American pressure, in
July 1781 British troops and Royalist militia units were evacuated to
the area around Charleston, and remained there after General
Cornwallis was defeated in October 1781 at Yorktown. Andrew Myers was
mustered as a private with Col. Thomas Pearson's Regiment of Little
RiverMilitia from December 7, 1781 to December 31, 1782, serving
under Captain Henry Siteman and with Chambers Blakeney, Christian Zong
and George Webber as fellow Soldiers -- all to be fellow Loyalist
settlers on the Eastern Shore. Chambers Blakeney knew Andrew Myers
before the war in South Carolina and was a witness to his Loyalist
claim.a

Schleswig-Holstein, 929.3 S557 v.2.
Augusta Library, The Early Germans of New Jersey, 929.3 C445e indicates:
Lourens Andriessen Van Boskerck (Buskerck or Buskirk), came from Holstein,
Denmark, in the summer of 1655. His name first appears in the records of New
Amsterdam, 29 June, 1656, in deed for a lot on Broad Street. He was then
unmarried and a turner by trade, afterwards, however, becoming a draper. He
purchased a tract of land at Minhakwa, now Greenville. He took the oath of
allegiance 20 Nov, 1665, m. 12 Sept. 1658, Jannetje Jans (widow of Christian
Barentsen). With her he received a fortune and four sons by her first husband.
They both died 1694. The name Boskerch means "church in the woods."
Genealogical History of Hudson and Bergen Counties, page 190: The founder of
the Van Buskirk family in this country was Lourens Andriessen, who, after
emigration to America, took the surname of Van Buskirk, the Van
signifying"from" and Bos Kerck meaning "church in the woods." He was a native
of the Province of Holstein, in Denmark, a tanner by trade, and came to America
n 1655.
In July 1658 Laurens was sent by the Orphans Master at New Amsterdam to the
South river (Delaware) to assist the widow of Christiaen Barents or Barentsen,
a carpenter, who died as a result of a malady that took many lives in that
area. Four and a half months later Laurens married Jannetje on 12 Dec 1658
according to the marriagwe registry of the Reformed Dutch church in New
Amsterdam.

John Bryon at the age of 13 left school to help his mother because ofhisfather's illness, but he was happy and proud to do it. With his firstmonths' wages, $18.00, he bought his mother a barrel of flour. Attheage of 15, his half-brother, Samuel from Hudson, Ohio, took him homewhere he attended school, but in 1884, he went back to his mother inVermont. Later, they moved to Toronto where they lived for many years.He went to Dental College in Philadelphia. He was clever with his handsand became famous in his work and was known from coast to coast. He gaveclinics and lectures at the different universities, the last one atHarvard. In 1897, they moved to St. Paul, Minnesota, where he residedthe rest of his life. The last two summers were spent at his country homeon a beautiful lake in Minnesota where he was very comfortableandhappy. He was mild tempered and had a well balanced and logical mind.
