James W. Griffin Sr., age 78, died Saturday at Stephens Memorial Hospital.
He was born at Livermore Falls jan 25, 1917, son of George and Mary Penny Griffin. He graduated from Livermore Falls High School and Colby College, and attended Northwestern University.
Mr. Griffin worked for Great Northern Paper in East Millinocket as production manager. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy.
He married Eleanor Cyr on Jan 7, 1934.
He is survived by his wife of Oxford; one son, James W. Jr. of Montville, N.J.; and one daughter, Penny of Netcong, N.J.; six grandchildren and six great0grandchildren.

Historical sketch of Epsom by Bunker lists John Griffin in Capt. Samuel Collins Company in 1812 War, Three months service, 19 years old at time of enlistment. History of Belknap and Merrimack County also shows John to have been in Capt. Bradberry Bartlett's Company. John was a selectman in 1835 and 1829 and representative to the General Court in 1851. John and his wife Mary are buried in the old family cemetery on the Edmunds farm in Deerfield. The writer attended their funerals in 1881 and 1889 and revisited the lot in 1950. The markings on the stones are still legible although surrounded by large trees that fill the lot. Additional reference: Dover Inquirer Mar 18, 1951 (Griffin Genealogy)
See "History of Hampstead" which records the baptism of John, son of Theophilus of Sandown. Resided in Nottingham (Northwood), NH. John and his father Theophilus, from Sandown, were in Capt. Hezekiah Hutchin's Company, Col. Reed's Regiment in the Revolutionary War in 1775. Batchellor's Revolutionary Documents also records John Griffin of Deerfield in Simeon Marston's company and Col. John Weldon's regiment in 1776 and on the Travel Roll "when Marcht Febrey 3th 1776 - 140 miles". Apparently John re-enlisted from Deerfield after his marriage in that town and later went to Northwood to reside. The Revolutionary service of this John was accepted by the New Hampshire Society of the Sons of the American Revolution in the application of Trescott Griffin, son of John William Griffin IX, for membership. This reportedly names Theophilus and John as father and son. Based on statements by the late John W. Griffin of Epsom and his sister, Mrs. Mary Griffin Walker Stevens of Wilmont, it is here accepted as correct. (Griffin Genealogy)
J.M. Moses in "Northwood Families" says, " The first John Griffin was by tradition brother of Theophilus. I failed to find his deed or probate record. His first house was south of the road, about a mile southeast of the Palmer place. His wife by tradition was Martha. He was probably the "Mr. John Griffin" that died May 26, 1833. A Mrs. Griffin had died Aug 27, 1831. Will of Thomas Rand of Deerfield, Nov. 11, 1794 mentioned daughter, Martha, wife of John Griffin." (Griffin Genealogy)

Batchellor's Revolutionary Documents also records John Griffin of Deerfield in Simeon Marston's company and Col. John Weldon's regiment in 1776 and on the Travel Roll "when Marcht Febrey 3th 1776 - 140 miles". Apparently John re-enlisted from Deerfield after his marriage in that town and later went to Northwood to reside. The Revolutionary service of this John was accepted by the New Hampshire Society of the Sons of the American Revolution in the application of Trescott Griffiin, son of John William Griffin IX, for membership. This reportedly names Theophilus and John as father and son. Based on statements by the late John W. Griffin of Epsom and his sister, Mrs. Mary Griffin Walker Stevens of Wilmont, it is here accepted as correct. (Griffin Genealogy)

Called John Griffin 3rd. Buried in the Edmunds/Griffin Cemetery in Northwood, NH - behind Broad Cove, Pleasant Lake.
Historical sketch of Epsom by Bunker lists John Griffin in Capt. Samuel Collins Company in 1812 War, Three months service, 19 years old at time of enlistment. History of Belknap and Merrimack County also shows John to have been in Capt. Bradberry Bartlett's Company. John was a selectman in 1835 and 1829 and representative to the General Court in 1851. John and his wife Mary are buried in the old family cemetery on the Edmunds farm in Deerfield. The writer attended their funerals in 1881 and 1889 and revisited the lot in 1950. The markings on the stones are still legible although surrounded by large trees that fill the lot. Additional reference: Dover Inquirer Mar 18, 1951 (Griffin Genealogy)

J.M. Moses in "Northwood Families" says, " The first John Griffin was by tradition brother of Theophilus. I failed to find his deed or probate record. His first house was south of the road, about a mile southeast of the Palmer place. His wife by tradition was Martha. He was probably the "Mr. John Griffin" that died May 26, 1833. A Mrs. Griffin had died Aug 27, 1831. Will of Thomas Rand of Deerfield, Nov. 11, 1794 mentioned daughter, Martha, wife of John Griffin." (Griffin Genealogy)

Resided in Sandown. Hammond's Revolutionary War Rolls show Theophilus Griffin aged 50 and John Griffin aged 19 in Capt. Hezekiah Hutchin's Company, Colonel Reed's regiment, in 1775. Batchellor's Revolutionary Documents lists as residents of Sandown signing the Association Test of 1776 to defend the colonies against the British, the following Griffins (Grifen's) Theophilus, Peter, Thomas, Moses, and Richard. Apparently John Griffin went to Northwood to live after his marriage June 8, 1775. It should be noted that there was another Theophilus Griffin, who was a resident of Derryfield and sergeant in general Stark's army in the Revolutionary War. There was also a third Theophilus Griffin who was born in Amesbury, Mass. and resided in Deerfield. These three Theophilus Griffins were probably cousins of varying degrees. (Griffin Genealogy)

Notes for JOHN GRIFFIN: Resided in Nottingham, NH. John and his father Theophilus, from Sandown, were in Capt. Hezekiah Hutchin's Company, Col. Reed's Regiment in the Revolutionary War in 1775. Batchellor's Revolutionary Documents also records John Griffin of Deerfield in Simeon Marston's company and Col. John Weldon's regiment in 1776 and on the Travel Roll "when Marcht Febrey 3th 1776 - 140 miles". Apparently John re-enlisted from Deerfield after his marriage in that town and later went to Northwood to reside. The Revolutionary service of this John was accepted by the New Hampshire Society of the Sons of the American Revolution in the application of Trescott Griffiin, son of John William Griffin IX, for membership. This reportedly names Theophilus and John as father and son. Based on statements by the late John W. Griffin of Epsom and his sister, Mrs. Mary Griffin Walker Stevens of Wilmont, it is here accepted as correct. (Griffin Genealogy)

Samuel was part of the break in the family that occured with the Revolution. He had two or three brothers and two sons that were officers in the Westchester Refugees, and 'removed' to Nova Scotia at war's end. He also had a son who was a Captain in the Militia as well as nephews and cousins fighting each other. Most who went to Canada did not come back in their lifetime.

Henry Purdy was born 1745. He died on 20 Jul 1826 in Fort Lawrence, Nova Scotia. He moved to Fort Lawrence, Nova Scotia. Henry Purdy was a Loyalist-Nov 1779 was commissioned Lt. in Refugee Militia of Light Infantry of Westchester Co., then as Capt.; left New York June 1783. Memorial 15 Feb. 1786 Halifax. Claim: 44 acres; house, cattle; legacy of 1/4 part of an estate in Westchester Co. He married Tamar Kniffen on 16 Feb 1773 in Rye, Westchester, New York.

Henry's commission is on file at the Public Records Office in London, England. They were 'removed' to Nova Scotia aboard the transport ship 'Thetis' and landed appox. 500 men, women, and children at Fort Cumberland in July 1783. Henry did well in Nova Scotia and was a land owner of considerable means when he died. He donated the land that The Anglican Church of Amherst was built on, and is listed as a Farmer, Retailer, Surveyer of Highways and Assessor of Fort Lawrence, Judge of the Court of Common Pleas, High Sheriff of Cumberland County, and Member of the Legislative Assembly form 1806 to 1820. He is well documented in the Canadia n Archives.

TO BURY MRS. M. E. GRIFFITH
Funeral Services Will Be Held at Home Today
Funeral services for Mrs. Mary E. Griffith, granddaughter of Colonel Thomas
Robinson, of the Continental Army of the American Revolution and widow of
Manuel E. Griffith, will be held this morning at 10 o£clock from 2116
DeLancey street. The services will be conducted by Rev Dr. David Steele, of
the Protestant Episcopal Church of St. Luke and the Epiphany. Mrs.
Griffith's father was Thomas Robinson, a son of the Revolutionary Colonel,
and her mother£s maiden name was Miss Ellen Brackett. She was a member of
the Colonial Dames and is survived by four children, Miss Anne L. Griffith,
Mrs. George Carter, Mrs. Roland R. Foulke, and Robert E. Griffith, and her
brother, Rev. Nalbro Frazier Robinson, at one time rector of the Church of
the Annunciation in this city, but who now lives in England.

Perhaps the publicity surrounding the restoration of the building inspired
Reverend Nalbro Frazier Robinson, who, in the course of giving away all of
his worldly possessions to join the Order of St, John the Evangelist in
1896, presented the city with Charles Wilson Peale£s portrait of his
grandfather, Thomas Robinson. Peale painted this half-length portrait in
1794 as a private commission. The portrait depicts Robinson, a lieutenant
colonel in the First Pennsylvania Regiment who served at Ticonderoga and
Brandywine, in military dress wearing the Order of the Cincinnati. The
painting made a valuable addition to the collection.
