General Notes: Husband - Daniel Purdy

Thomas Lyon (9) Purdy says that DeLancy married a Van Cortlandt
daughter; herdowry was large tracts of land in Cortlandt
Manor. Near or during the Revolution, DeLancy (active Loyalist
leader) decided to sell off a lot of his land in case he lost
it. Two Purdys who wanted to be millers, of Rye, bought it
(Daniel 3 and Hachaliah his brother). Daniel gave his part to
his grandsons because his sons were Tory. Joseph L. picked a
spot where he could build a small dam and a mill. This family
has pictures of the dam and mill, before the building of the
NYC water supply Titicus Reservoir and Muscoot (Croton)
Reservoir dams c1893. The houses in the valley that were going
to be flooded were moved to the present site of the hamlet of
Purdys. The Joseph L. Purdy house was not moved. Daniel 3 of
course lived and gave the land prior to the Revolution. Joseph
L. Purdy erected the frame of his house the day of the battle
of Bunker Hill. There were strong feelings about Tory vs. Whig
so some of these stories have been given a bit of a slant over
the years.

John Purdy came to Rye in 1670 from East Chester, where however
his stay
must have been short, for his name does not occur among the
early settlers
of that place.

On his arrival here he bought John Jackson's house and lands,
with his
rights and a home lot on the plains from John Banks. He died
about l678,
leaving a widow Elizabeth and two sons under age. His widow and
John
Brondig administered his estate, and Elizabeth Purdy's children
figure in
our records as owning various allotments and a share in the
undivided
lands.

General Notes: Husband - Daniel Strang Jr.

Name Suffix:<NSFX> Jr.

Daniel Streing/Strang, Jr. was born in 1688 in NewRochelle,
Westchester, New York. He married D. Phebe Purdy, the daughter
ofJoseph Purdy (son of Francis Purdy and Mary Elizabeth
Brundage) and ElizabethOgden (daughter of John Ogden and
Judith Budd) At the age of twelve, on 1 November 1704, Daniel
was apprenticed to Stephen Valleau of New York City for four
years to learn the trade of Cooper. In the inventory of his
effects dated 2 November 1741, along with such items as 'one
locking glas' and stated quantities of 'Ingen corn' and 'ots'
were his 'copper toals'. He lived in Rye until at least 1715.
His signature, spelled Streing, appears on two property
transfers in which, as a resident of Rye, he bought land on the
New York-Connecticut colony line in 1713 from Joseph Budd,
father of his sister May's husband and sold sixty acres in
Greenwich to Samuel Brown in May 1715. According to the
family manuscript, Daniel and Phebe farmed most of their
married life in White Plains near the Court House. County land
records show that they sold land in White Plains on 19 April
1737. He moved from there about the year 1744to Cortlandt's
Manor in the now town of Yorktown, and from Colonel Philip
Verplanck procured three farms: One of which he set himself
down, now known by the name of Rye Hoff farm, including the
farm where Doctor Elias Inger(?) lives called the Saw Mill
Farm. Another on the Ridge North of his dwelling house and
where Benjamin Field has since possessed. And the other in
what is called Stony Street now, since possessed by Calib
Morgan and now in part only. Daniel built a home there and
died while living on the Rye Hoff farm, the siteof the York
Hill development, according to Miss Mildred Strang. He gave
theSaw Mill farm to Daniel, the Field farm to Francis and the
one in Stony Street to his son Gabriel but that son died before
he was settled thereon.
Although his burial plot is unrecorded, there are several
weather-effaced fieldstonesadjacent to his son's tombstone in
the little plot on King Street, Port Chester, near the Merritt
Parkway underpass. One of these may well be Daniel's grave.
Daniel and his sons were fruitful and most of the Strangs now
living in the United States and Canada are his descendants.2 SOUR S726

General Notes: Husband - Samuel Purdy Sr.

Samuel Purdy, son of Joseph, first mentioned 1708, died in 1753.
He became one of the most prominent citizens of the town of Rye, NY In1720 he made his first appearance in public office when he was appointed Justice of the Peace. This position he held until his death. From 1723 to1739 he served as town supervisor. His duties were so faithfully discharged that he was reelected from 1744 to 1746, and chosen again in1749. He also acted as the last town trustee or overseer in 1729, and as a farmer of the excise in 1743 and in 1744. He served as one of the Judges of the Court of Pleas of the County of Westchester from 1734 to 1737, and again from 1740 to 1752. He also presided at the court of the Jan. 22nd, of the latter year. The Rev. James Wetmore, minister of the Protestant Episcopal Church of Rye, was seeking a new schoolmaster in1732. At the request of sundry inhabitants that Samuel Purdy Esq. might be appointed, he wrote the following recommendation to the secretary to the "Venerable Society for the Propagation of the Gospel" "He is a gentleman very well respected in the town, a constant communicant of the church, a man of good abilities and sober exemplary life and conversation; he is the foremost Justice of the Peace in the parish, and one of the Quarum as well as chaplain of the militia, but these being places that require, rather that make a fortune, he has private reasons to make him accept a mission from the Honorable Society , and the greater his interest of the peoples esteems and affections, by the honorable character he sustains, he will be under greater advantage to promote religion and the interest of the church for which he has always had a good affection. This gentleman is well qualified to teach and instruct children in the principles of religion , and such learning as is fit for the country, and I doubt not he will be very faithful and industrious, if the Honorable Society be pleased to employ him. Needless to add, Justice Purdy was employed and continued a schoolmaster until his death. When he died in 1753 the Rev. James Wetmore gives an excellent account of the funeral. "The church hath suffered a loss by death of Mr. Purdy, who was a friend of religion, and did many kind offices to the poor, as far as he was able. His corpse was attended to the church on Ash Wednesday by a great concourse of people of all persuasions, to whom the pastor preached a sermon adopted to that day, and to the melancholy occasion.
Shortly before his death he had sold to his two sons, Samuel and Caleb, for one hundred and seventy pounds, "my home lot where I dwell in Rye,comprising five acres." This included the present rectory grounds ofChrist Church.

Samuel was part of the break in the family that occured with the Revolution. He had two or three brothers and two sons that were officers in the Westchester Refugees, and 'removed' to Nova Scotia at war's end. He also had a son who was a Captain in the Militia as well as nephews and cousins fighting each other. Most who went to Canada did not come back in their lifetime.

I exchange data with people who have a interlocking marriage
into any surnames that interlocks into any of the branches
of my families.I started when I was 10 years old now 68years.

I am sharing my data in the interest of collaborative research.
I do this to help people to find there lineages and to fill
the pedigree charts.

I have not personally researched all families listed; dates
and information are subject to verification. Not responsible
for typographical errors misplaced citations. Missing
sources/references are because of my learning curve, not my
intention. You are encouraged to seek further documention
for your own confirmation.Further I have no control what
other people include about their families in any of the
data that they exchange.

If there are no dates about the living, then the computers
can not determine if the person is alive or deceased.
The sites set the living anywhere from 75 to 100 years
depending on the laws of the countries that they are in.

When I exchange with lineages the living are sometime shown
depending on who you are exchanging with, but my
request is that,if you update any of my data to the
internet, you also set the do not show the living, before
you update to the internet.

Also place in the source your contact email
address, and the lineage, so people can contact you
reqarding your update.

I have no claim to owning the data, except that which is
my immediate lineage, and even that is worked on by many
members of my family lineages. It is only as good as what
people put into it,that exchange with me. So look
in the notes of the genealogy for origin, if they put it
there,or the source.

If you are going to correct, update or put new branches on the
lineage your are inquirying about, please do not add from what
I have sent you,(This just duplicates how many more people
I have to find in the duplicates and merge them, edit your
notes to ensure that there is nothing there that you do not
want published.

Also do not submit information on copyrights that invades the
privacy of others especially for a relative that has not given
you permission to publish same.

Remember nothing is carved in stone except time.

The best way for me to describe the relationship, is for
example if you have 6,000 people in your data base
that are connected via interlocking marriages, and
you find that you have a marriage that is interlocked into
one of my people in my data base, then they are related
via interlocking marriages, does not matter how distant.
The difference here is that the interlocking into my data
base would link to over 631,749 people via interlocking
marriages.

My hobby is working on interlocking marriages,to any
family surname that is in my data, and I exchange with
people to find them, and to assist them in finding lineage
that link into their families.

depending on the laws of the countries that they are in.

General Notes: Husband - Johann Puterbaugh

The difference here is that the interlocking into my data
base would link to over 631,749 people via interlocking
marriages.

My hobby is working on interlocking marriages,to any

people to find them, and to assist them in finding lineage
that link into their families.

privacy of others especially for a relative that has not given
you permission to publish same.

General Notes: Child - Rebecca Puterbaugh

If you are going to correct, update or put new branches on the
lineage your are inquirying about, please do not add from what
I have sent you,(This just duplicates how many more people
I have to find in the duplicates and merge them, edit your
notes to ensure that there is nothing there that you do not

depending on who you are exchanging with, but my
request is that,if you update any of my data to the
internet, you also set the do not show the living, before
you update to the internet.

General Notes: Husband - Nathaniel Richardson

Cause of Death:<CAUS> "killed by a building he was assisting to remove"

General Notes: Child - Nathaniel Richardson

The Richardson Memorial by John Adams Vinton, 1876, pg 628-629:
NATHANIEL RICHARDSON, eldest son of Nathaniel and Eunice (Putnam)
Richardson, of Salem; b.in Woburn, Aug. 26, 1772; never married.
He removed from Salem, where he had been brought up, to Portland, Me.,
about 1793. He was a tanner, merchant, and trader on a large scale.
Many conveyances of land to him are on record in the Cumberland Registry
of Deeds, beginning at the outset of his career. Some abstracts follow:
July 8, 1793. Leased a tanyard of John Emmons of Portland [Cumb. Deeds,
xx. 248.]
July 4, 1794, Leased a tanyard w/ currier's shop of Stephen Hall in
Portland (Cumb. Deeds, xxi.300.]
Aug. 4, 1795, Bought of [Col.] William Cobb, of Portland, a parcel of
land in Portland, on the south side of Fore Street, eastward of Love
Lane, and some flats adjoining, extending to the channel of Fore River,
together with the wharf and buildings thereon. [Cum. deeds, xxiii. 144.]
April 29, 1796. Bought of Mary Hall, of Portland, land and flats on
the south-easterly side of Fore Street, adjoining the land which said
Richardson purchased of Co. Wm. Cobb. [Cumb. Deeds, xxiv. 296.]
June 6, 1796. Bought of John Emmons, of Portland, several parcels of
land in Portland. [Cumb. Deeds, xxiv. 558]
He made other purchases of land in Portland in 1797, 1798 and 1800.
(Cumb. Deeds, xxvi., xxvii., and xxxiii.]
He also bought a mill in Buxton and other property on Saco River, Aug.
27, 1798 [York Deeds, lxiii.41.]
On the flats purchased as above in Portland, and the wharf adjoining,
Richardson's wharf was built by him, and named for him, and a large
amount of business was transacted. He had a store on that wharf. He
advertised flour and other articles for sale, in the Portland Gazette,
Aug. 18, 1800. He was also in the East India trade. Meanwhile he
carried on the tanning business in the old tanyard between Fore and Free
Streets, where Cotton Street now is, and where Dea. William Cotton and
his heirs had pursued the same business nearly fifty years.
To make these purchases and transact this business, he was in part
dependent on his father's resources, as we learn from another deed. He
removed to Baltimore previous to Feb., 1803.
February, 1803. Nathaniel Richardson, late of Portland, but now of
Baltimore, merchant, to secure his bond, gave a deed to Eunice
Richardson, of Salem, Mass., widow [his mother], of land and flats on
Fore Street in Portland, being the same he bought of Wm. Cobb in 1795 and
Mary Hall in 1796. [Cumb. Deeds, lxxxix. 262.]
Eunice Richardson, the mother, sold her right in the above to Joshua
Richardson,another son, in 1823 [Cumb. Deeds, xciii.503.]
In July, he was residing in the city of Lisbon. How long he resided
there, does not appear. He died in Malaga, in Spane, Jan. 24, 1818, aged
45. His large property, at his death, went to his brothers and their
children.

General Notes: Child - Joshua Richardson

The Richardson Memorial by John Adams Vinton, 1876, pg 629-630:
CAPT. JOSHUA RICHARDSON, second son of Nathaniel and Eunice (Putnam)
Richardson, of Salem;born there, Sept. 28, 1774; m. first, Nov., 1802,
Eunice Lander, b. 1778, dau. of Capt. Peter and Rebecca (Bronw) Lander,
of Salem. She died march 23, 1804. aged 26. "She was a lady of superior
intellectual endowments, and enjoyed an habitual cheerfulness, which
never forsook her during her twelve monthssickness." (Salem Gazette,
April 3, 1804.] Second, April 2, 1816, Ann (Hanford) Jones, dau. of
Thomas Hanford, Esq., of St. John, New Brunswick. She died Oct. 19,
1850, aged 63.
While yet a young man, he visited Europe twice. He spent some time in
France in 1796-7, and again in 1800-1. The influence of these visits on
his manners was manifest, during his whole subsequent life. While living
in Salem, Oct., 1798, he subscribed five hundred dollars to the fund for
building the frigate Essex at that port.
He came from Salem, his native place, to Portland, in Sept., 1801 and
in 1802, joined his brother Nathaniel in the store then lately built on
Richardson's wharf, where, and in its neighborhood, he continued to the
close of a long life. Steadily, industriously, and honorably, he
conducted a prosperous and remunerative business. He had great energy of
character, and was so prompt in the discharge of his own duties, and so
rigid in his requirements of duty from others, that he seemed, to persons
not familiar with him in his social hours, to be stern and severe. But
he possessed keen sensibility, and in private and domestic life was
affectionate, gentle and kind.
He was many years in the West India trade. Afterwards was treasurer
of the Portland Manufacturing Co., and president of the Manufacturers and
Traders Bank.
For twenty years he was very active in the municipal affaires of
Portland, as fire warden, superintendent of streets, and selectman; and
was a most efficient officer. He conducted the affairs ofthe town with
much ability and vigor. Two years, 1823 and 1824, he was a member of the
State Legislature. Whatever he undertook he faithfully performed. He
was a true and honorable man in all his dealings, and expected a like
return from others.
May 23, 1856. Joshua Richardson, his brother Israel Richardson, their
brother William Putnam Richardson, Lydia D. Gillis, George D. Richardson,
Eunice P. Richardson, Elizabeth D. Richardson [these four being children
of Jesse Richardson, deceased, a brother of Nathaniel and Joshua], Susan
C. Richardson, Ellen Octavia Low [grandchildren of Jesse], Edward Symmes
Lang Richardson, and the children of Charles Frederic Richardson, by
their guardian, purchased of the Richardson Wharf Company, by their
president, G. F. Shepley, the said wharf, and the land, etc. connected
therewith, corner of Fore and Bank Streets. [Cumb. Deeds, cclxxii. 104.]
Same day Israil Richardson, executor of the will of Mrs. Eunice (Dodge)
Richardson, widow of Jesse, sold her interest in said wharf, etc. [Cumb.
Deeds, cclxxii. 107.]
Joshua Richardson sold several parcels of land in Westbrook in 1841.
He died in Portland, Nov. 4, 1862, aged 88.
