Edwards, Alice and Ida -by A. Hopkins - (A Century of Living Hartney 1882-1982)
In 1892, Mr. and Mrs. James Edwards left, with 12 children, their home in Russell County, Ontario. Travelling by rail to Minneapolis, U.S.A. and by covered wagon, they eventually arrived at a homestead near Melita. Many fascinating stories were told of their life on the homestead - particularly encounters with the Indians, before Riel Rebellion, and of the house fire which claimed the lives of three of the children.
In 1894, Alice and Ida, two of the girls, came to Hartney. There they set up a dressmaking shop which ran successfully for five years. They pursued the latest fashions, often taking trips to Minneapolis to learn about the present trends. Many a wedding gown and floor length party dress were designed and made for the young ladies of Hartney. These were usually complemented by large velvet and straw hats, designed by a milliner at the A.E. Hill Co. store.
In 1900, a day in June, Alice was married to Thomas Hopkins, and Ida to A.E. Fry, young men of Hartney, at their parents' home in Melita. (Refer to the Hopkins and A.E. Fry history.)

---------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------
Fry, A. E. and Family -by Leta Gillies -(A Century of Living Hartney 1882-1982)
My father, Arthur Edger Fry was born March 1, 1872 in Port Hope, Ontario, the youngest son of Tom Fry and Lovedy Hancock. His parents had some from Warbston, Cornwall, England, by sail boat - a trip of some five weeks.
Dad came from Ontario to Manitoba - Canada in 1892, to join his three brothers Thomas, George and Richard, who farmed in the Melgund district. 1895 found Arthur Fry working in Hartney post office and selling men's overcoats from a room in the rear of the office.
During the nest few years Dad was involved with many business enterprises in Hartney - such as Fry Bros. Men's Furnishings. This firm came about with the arrival of Uncle Jim Fry and family from Carleton Place, Ontario. Uncle Jim was an experienced tailor. Uncle Dick finally purchased A.E.'s share. There was the building of a livery barn which was managed by Wm. Butler, and the barn was later bought by him. A furniture business was purchased in partnership with Uncle Tom Hopkins. this was sold in 1908 to H. Walton, when Dad acquired the Avondale Hotel. The name was changed to the Imperial. There were alterations made in the building - the part facing East Railway Street was opened up with large plate glass windows, into a pool room and barber shop, and a grocery store an dice cream parlor were opened on the Poplar Street side. My father converted the grocery store to hardware in 1916, and operated this business until 1935. At that time my parents moved to Brandon and Dad joined my brother Nelson (Nick) in his business venture, which became Continental Auto Supply.
My family were members of the Baptist Church in Hartney. Among my many memories of church and Sunday School, is the organ. It had to be pumped manually before it could be played. For several years my brother Reg was the "official pumper." After the closing of the Baptist Church, we attended the Methodist and later the United Church.
A. E. Fry was an early member of the Masonic Lodge of Hartney. At one time he held an office in Grand Lodge of Manitoba - Canada. He was interested in all sports. In winter it was curling, and many were the spoils brought home from bonspiels. Dad was sometimes manager or secretary of the baseball team and I remember him doing some chauffeuring with the Model T. when the team visited neighboring towns.
Arthur Fry Married Ida Edwards June 27, 1900, at Melita, Manitoba - Canada. Ida was the youngest daughter of James Simpson Edwards and Margaret Johnston, and was born in Rockland, Ontario.
The Edwards family moved to Melita in 1884. Their journey west is told in the Tom and Alice Hopkins story in the book, Alice (Edwards) Hopkins being my mother's sister. As young women, my mother and her sister were apprenticed to a dress maker in Melita. They proved to be apt pupils and 1894 found the opening a shop in Hartney. Their dress making career had begun. They soon had to have several assistants. The Edwards sisters kept in touch with style, sometimes visiting larger centres such as Minneapolis, to see what the rest of the world was wearing.
Mother and Dad were married in Melita - in the Baptist Church. Her sister Alice and her fiance Tom Hopkins were the attendants. After the wedding party returned to the Edward's home for the wedding feast, Tom and Alice announced they were being married before the dinner was served - so the wedding feast, honored two newly married couples!
The A. E. Fry's moved into the house at the corner of Spencer Avenue and Poplar Street. They lived in this same home for 36 years.
Mother was a member of the Ladies Aid of the Baptist Church. It seems to me I can remember her always being the secretary-treasurer. In her early years in Hartney, she was a member of the choir in the Baptist Church. Another interest was the Women's Institute after it was formed in Hartney. Mother was a charter member of the Eastern Star.
Mother's experience in dress making stood her in food stead all her life. I recall neighbors and friends coming with their sewing problems. As a child I used to think how nice it would be if I could have a "bought" dress, but as I grew older I realized how fortunate I was in having a mother who could make my dresses. About 1927 mother opened a dress and hat shop in part if the Fry building and operated a most successful business until 1935.
Mother and Dad had settled in Calgary in the 1940's. Mother died there in 1954 and Dad in 1958.
Ida and Arthur Fry had four children. Reg, Leta, Nelson (Nick) and Maurice.
Reg finished school and assisted in he store for sometime. In 1923 he joined the staff of Marshall Wells in Winnipeg. Later he was with the Continental Auto Supply. Finally he settled in Vancouver where he had a lumber mill.
Reg married Carol Thompson of Iberia, Missouri. They had one daughter Patricia -- Mrs, E. Peterson, Keremeos, B.C. Carol died in August 1971 and Reg in October 1979.
I, Leta, after completing my education at Brandon College, taught in high schools in Saskatchewan. I married C. C. Gillis of Gray, Saskatchewan. After my husband's death in1957, I moved to Regina. For the next six years I was employed by the Indian Affairs Department of the Federal Government, organizing classed and teaching young adult native people. I still make my home in Regina.
Nick helped Dad in the hardware business for some years and during the summers pitched a lot of baseball. He moved to Brandon in the early 1930's, where he began a business in auto accessories. This business expanded into many Continental Auto Supply stores across Western Canada. Nick and is family moved to Calgary, which was the headquarters of Continental.
Nick married Marion Collison of Winnipeg. They have four sons - Nick, Philip, Robin and Roger.
Maurice married Evelyn Agnew of Hartney. They have four daughters - Joanne, Cathryn and Carolyn (twins) and Jackie and one son Donald. As I look back on a happy childhood and my growing up years in Hartney, I recall some of the activities in which we all took part - field days in Deloraine, Sunday School picnics, band concerts, exhibits at Hartney fair sports days in the summer school fairs in September, corn roasts on the flat by the Souris River in the fall, skating all winter to the music of the Hartney band and on and on. Perhaps we didn't realize just how fortunate we were, but now in retrospect - I don't think there could have been a more interesting place to have spent one's childhood and youth than in a small prairie town - and that town Hartney.

Edwards, Alice and Ida -by A. Hopkins -(A Century of Living Hartney 1882-1982)
In 1892, Mr. and Mrs. James Edwards left, with 12 children, their home in Russell County, Ontario. Travelling by rail to Minneapolis, U.S.A. and by covered wagon, they eventually arrived at a homestead near Melita. Many fascinating stories were told of their life on the homestead - Particularly encounters with the Indians, before the Riel Rebellion, and of the house fire which claimed the lifes of three of the children.
These were usually complemented by large velvet and straw hats, designed by a milliner at the A. E. Hill Co. store.
In 1900, a day in June, Alice was married to Thomas Hopkins and Ida to A.E. Fry, young men of Hartney, at their parents' home in Melita. (Refer to the Hopkins and A. E. Fry history.)

Here is a marriage registration for this couple:
Ontario Marriage Registration # 11450/73
The groom was James S. Edwards, 37, born and living in Clarence, a widower and a yeoman, Baptist, the son of John S. Edwards and Ellen Lamb.
The bride was Margaret Johnson, 32, born in South Plantaganet, living in Clarence, a spinster, the daughter of Archibald Johnson and Margaret Gordon.
The witnesses were John Edwards and Mary Matthews, both of Clarence.
The marriage was performed 25 Aug 1872 at the house of Archibald Johnson, Clarence by Rev. John Higgins, Baptist Minister, Thurso by license and was registered with James McCaul in Clarence, Prescott and Russell Counties.
As far as I know, I am not related to any of these people.

Note:
The original record of the marriage of James Simpson Edwards and Margaret Johnston in the Thurso Baptist Church 1863-1889 Record Book shows Margaret as a widow ? Margaret Rose- and the date of the marriage is also different from the Ontario registration done by James McCaul in Clarence, Ontario. The Thurso Baptist record reads:
Folio Forty five
#234 Marriage ? Edwards ? Rose
James Simpson Edwards (Widower) of the Township of Clarence County of Russel and Margaret Rose (Widow) of the Township and County aforesaid were united in marriage by dispensation of License on this the twentieth day of August one thousand eight hundred and seventy-two.

Contracting Parties James S. Edwards

Witnesses Archibald Johnston

[NOTE : Although the marriage was recorded by the minister, John Higgins, in the Thurso Baptist Church record book, and they were married at Clarence, Ontario,it was not unusual for the time. Thurso, Quebec is situated on the opposite shore of the Ottawa River from Clarence. Often the minister used whatever record book he had with him to record the event even though it was connected to a different church. John Higgins was the Thurso Baptist minister but in 1872 was serving as interim minister to the Clarence Baptist Church. James S. Edwards and Margaret Johnston were both previously married. James was married to Catherine Sherwood Roe and had 6 children. Margaret Johnston was first married to a man with the surname of Rose and they had one child, Lorinda Estelle Rose, known as Lily.to her family. ]
The Thurso Baptist Church 1863 ? 1889 Record book is on microfilm at the Archives nationales du Quebec in Gatineau (Hull) Quebec. Film # is M122/20 entitled Outaouais. Paroisses de l?registres paroissiaux. Thurso Baptist Church 19 Nov. 1863 ? Nov. 9 1908.
From a fellow Edwards researcher I received the following information:
Christian Messenger ? Marriage Aug. 1872 ? Edwards ? Rose. At res. Bride?s father on 20 Aug. by Pastor J. Higgins. Mr. J.S. Edwards (widower) to Mrs. Margaret Rose (widow) all of Clarence, Russell Co.

Born: 0551 - Sweden. Baptized: Died: Buried:
General Notes: Husband - Egil
Egil was the name of On the Old's son, who succeeded as king in Sweden aft
erhis father's death. He was no warrior, but sat quietly at home. Tunne w
as the name of a slave who had been the counsellor and treasurer of On t
he Old; and when On died Tunne took much treasure and buried it in the ear
th. Now when Egil became king he put Tunne among the other slaves, whi
ch he took very ill and ran away with others of the slaves. They dug up t
he treasures which Tunnehad concealed, and he gave them to his men, and w
as made their chief. Afterwards many malefactors flocked to him; and th
ey lay out in the woods, but sometimes fell upon the domains, pillaging a
nd killing the people. When King Egilheard this he went out with his forc
es to pursue them; but one night when hehad taken up his night quarter
s, Tunne came there with his men, fell on the king's men unexpectedly, a
nd killed many of them. As soon as King Egil perceived the tumult, he prep
ared for defence, and set up his banner; but many people deserted him, bec
ause Tunne and his men attacked them so boldly, and King Egil saw that not
hing was left but to fly. Tunne pursued the fugitives into the forest, a
nd then returned to the inhabited land, ravaging and plundering without re
sistance. All the goods that fell into Tunne's hands he gave to his peopl
e, and thus became popular and strong in men. King Egil assembledúan ar
my again, and hastened to give battle to Tunne. But Tunne was again victor
ious, and King Egil fled with the loss of many people. Egil and Tunne h
ad eightbattles with each other, and Tunne always gained the victory. Th
en King Egilfled out of the country, and went to Sealand in Denmark, to F
rode the Bold, and promised him a scatt from the Swedes to obtain help. Fr
ode gave him an army, and also his champions, with which force King Egil r
epaired to Sweden. When Tunne heard this he came out to meet him; and the
re was a great battle, inwhich Tunne fell, and King Egil recovered his ki
ngdom, and the Danes returned home. King Egil sent King Frode great and go
od presents every year, but he paid no scatt to the Danes; but notwithstan
ding, the friendship between Egil and Frode continued without interruptio
n. After Tunne's fall, Egil ruled the kingdom for three years. It happen
ed in Sweden that an old bull, which was destined for sacrifice, was f
ed so high that he became dangerous to people; andwhen they were goi
ng to lay hold of him he escaped into the woods, became furious, and was l
ong in the forest committing great damage to the country. King Egil w
as a great hunter, and often rode into the forest to chase wild animals. O
nce he rode out with his men to hunt in the forest. The king had trac
ed an animal a long while, and followed it in the forest, separated from a
ll his men. He observed at last that it was the bull, and ro
de up to it to kill it. The bull turned round suddenly, and the king stru
ck him with his spear; but it tore itself out of the wound. The bull now s
truck his horn in the side of the horse, so that he instantly fell fl
at on the earth with the king. The king sprang up, and was drawing his swo
rd, when the bull struck his horns right into the king's breast. The king
's men then came up and killed the bull. The king lived but a short tim
e, and was buried in a mound at Upsal. Thjodolf sings of it thus: --
"The fair-haired son of Odin's race,
Who fled before fierce Tunne's face,
Has perished by the demon-beast
Who roams the forests ofthe East.
The hero's breast met the full brunt
Of the wild bull's shaggy front;
The hero's heart's asunder torn
By the fell Jotun's spear-like horn."

General Notes: Child - Ottar
Alias:<ALIA> /"Vendilkraka"/
Ottar was the name of King Egil's son who succeeded to the domains and kin
gdom after him. He did not continue friendly with King Frode, and therefo
re King Frode sent messengers to King Ottar to demand the scatt which Eg
il had promised him. Ottar replied, that the Swedes had never paid sca
tt to the Danes, neither would he; and the messengers had to departwith t
his answer. Frode was a great warrior, and he came one summer with hisar
my to Sweden, and landed and ravaged the country. He killed many people, t
ook some prisoners, burned all around in the inhabited parts, made a gre
at booty, and made great devastation. The next summer King Frode made an e
xpedition to the eastward; and when King Ottar heard that Frode was n
ot at home in his own country, he went on board his own ships, sailed ov
er to Denmark, and ravaged there without opposition. As he heard that a gr
eat many people were collected at Sealand, he proceeds westward to the Sou
nd, and sails north aboutto Jutland; lands at Lymfjord; plunders the Ve
nd district; burns, and lays waste, and makes desolate the country he go
es over with his army. Vatt and Faste were the names of the earls whom Fro
de had appointed to defend the countryin Denmark while he was abroad. Wh
en the earls heard that the Swedish king was laying Denmark waste, they co
llected an army, hastened on board their ships, and sailed by the south si
de to Lymfjord. They came unexpectedly upon Ottar, and the battle began im
mediately. The Swedes gave them a good reception, and many people fe
ll on both sides; but as soon as men fell in the Danish armyother men has
tened from the country to fill their places, and also all the vessels in t
he neighbourhood joined them. The battle ended with the fall of Ottar a
nd the greater part of his people. The Danes took his body, carri
ed itto the land, laid it upon a mound of earth, and let the wild beas
ts and ravens tear it to pieces. Thereafter they made a figure of a crow o
ut of wood, sent it to Sweden, and sent word with it that their king, Otta
r, was no better than it; and from this he was called Ottar Vendelcrow. Th
jodolf tells so of it: --
"By Danish arms the hero bold,
Ottar the Brave, lies stiff and cold.
To Vendel's plain the corpse was borne;
By eagles' claws the corpse is torn,
Spattered by ravens' bloody feet,
The wild bird's prey, the wild wolf's meat.
The Swedes have vowed revenge to take
On Frode's earls, for Ottar's sake;
Like dogs to kill them in their land,
In their own homes, by Swedish hand."
