Maj.: I have the honor to report that no casualties occurred in
either the Twenty-first, Twenty-fifth, or Forty-fourth Virginia Regt.'s
during the recent engagements around Winchester. These
three regiments are now under my command.

Report of Col. John C. Higginbotham, Twenty-fifty Virginia Infantry.
Camp near Martinsburg, W. Va., July 21, 1863.
Capt.: I herewith respectfully report that at twilight, July 1,
in obedience to orders from Capt. [R.] Cleary, acting assistant
adjutant-general, I threw forward four companies, under the command
of Maj. [R. D.] Lilley, as a picket to cover the front of the
brigade, which were deployed as skirmishers the following morning
at dawn.
At 3 p. m., in accordance with instructions, I deployed the remaining
portion of my regiment, and assumed charge of the line. The
skirmishing, which had only been occasional, and confined more
closely to the center of the left wing, became more general as the
line advanced. We were shelled until the base of the hill occupied
by the enemy was reached, but without casualties. The enemy
made but feeble resistance until thrown back upon their line of
support, well sheltered behind rocks and other accidents, in rear of
a small branch, but were dislodged in one charge. Just here my
casualties were the heaviest. At 8 p. m. I received a wound that
caused me, after the firing had nearly ceased, to surrender my command
to Lieut.-Col. Robinson.
The regiment remained in line of battle that night, with pickets
thrown forward, and at dawn, July 3, advanced, throwing 50 men
forward as sharpshooters, under the command of Lieut.'s [J. G.]
McCray and [J. H.] Yancey. These sharpshooters, as well as the
supporting regiment, were engaged during the entire day.
At 12 o'clock that night, the regiment withdrew with the brigade
to the chain of hills in front of Gettysburg. Remained quietly in
line during the day of July 4, and, after twilight, with the division,
marched in the direction of Fairfield.
It is with pleasure that I can testify to the gallantry and skill exhibited
by Lieut.-Col. Robinson and Maj. Lilley in lending
assistance to me, as well as the same I affirm of the commanding
officers of Companies A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, &c.; First Lieut.
[Solomon] Poe; Capt. [W. H.] Fitchett, Capt. [E. D.] Camden,
Capt.'s [C. D.] McCoy, [J. H.] Johnson, [J. M.] Berry, [R. E. A.]
Stuart, [Wilson] Harper, and [J.] W. Mathews, with their several
lieutenants. I never saw men act better.
My casualties in killed, wounded, and missing are 70.*

Major Robert Pike was the first and strongest representative of the right of petition in New England. (For a lengthier discussion see The Essex Antiquarian, 4:113-117) According to Hoyt: "Maj. Robert and Mrs. Pike were first on the list of members of the Salisbury church in 1687; andhe was the most prominent citizen of Salisbury during the last half of the 17th century. ... He took the oath of freedom May 17, 1637...He was very decided in his opinions, which were liberal in advance of his time...He has been calledthe 'moral and fearless hero of New England'; 'the first and strongest representative of the right of petition'; the 'power which squelched the witchcraft delusion', etc." From Charles Hendrick p. 31-32, a slightly modified version of what appears in the Bradbury Memorial, p. 68-70: "He was one of the founders of Salisbury, Mass., and became one of the leading men on committees and commissions for the transaction of the public business. At the age of thirty-two he was chosen a member of the General Court, and had a much longer service in that capacity and as councilor and assistant, than any of his contemporaries. He had a good education and wrote a fine, flowing hand. He was an easy, eloquent and forceful speaker. He was engaged in at least three conspicuous controversies duringhis life. The first was his arraignment by the General Court in 1653, for hishostility to the persecution of the Quakers. The second was his resistance of the dogmatic authority of some of the clergy, in the person of his pastor, Rev.John Wheelwright. The third was his bitter opposition to the witchcraft prosecutions in 1692. In all these controversies, Robert Pike stood practically alone.He was a century in advance of his time, and a century has more than vindicated his advanced positions. The historian of the Salem witchcraft delusion says that "not a voice comes down to us of deliberate and effective hostility to themovement, except that of Robert Pike in his cool, close and powerful argumentative appeals to the judges who were trying the witchcraft cases. It stands out against the deep blackness of those proceedings like a pillar of light upon a starless Midnight sky." Confronting the judges stood this sturdy old man, his head whitened with the frosts of seventy-six winters and protested that there wasno legal way of convicting a witch, even according to the laws and beliefs of those times. It required no small amount of courage for him to take the stand hedid against the opinions of the highest judicial tribunal in the province whenno one was safe from the charge of having dealings with the evil one, and he himself might be the very next one accused of being a witch! But having the courage of his convictions he rose to the demands of the situation and proclaimed his opposition by a formal and thorough exposition: The great merit of this position, so far as it has come down to us, belongs entirely to him, and no man ofhis time is entitled to greater honor. It is a marvel how he breasted the stormwhen any resistance to the popular demamd was deemed evidence of complicity with the witches, imps and all the powers of darkness, to overthrow the true church on earth. He defended and plead the cause of several of the accused, among whom were Mrs. Mary Bradbury, who was condemned but not executed, and Susanna Martin, whose memory is perpetuated by John Greenleaf Whittier, the poet." The 1914 "Americana" comments briefly about Robert Pike: "...he appears as one of theearliest exponents in America of Legislative assemblies, and acquittal in courts of law in default of sufficiently conclusive evidence."

At the age of 11, in 1798, the Irish Rebellion broke out and she was imprisoned twice, to be burned. She was saved both times by the British Dragoons, but her only brother, Benjamin, was murdered for his loyalty to the British. Benjamin died a gruesome death (see Thomas Lett's obit).
It is believed one of the soldiers who saved her eventually became her husband at age 16, the soldier Samuel Lett.
Suffering a nervous breakdown after being widowed in 1824, she moved with her family in 1833 to Solina, Darlington, Canada, never to recover from the breakdown.
She died of yellow fever in 1839 while in Natchitoches, LA, after her sons had moved her entire family to Texas/Louisiana, as far away as possible from the pressures brought upon the family by her son Benjamin's efforts in the Canadian Rebellion of 1838.
