jn van Rijsel count of Flanders who became one of the most influential fi
gures of 11th-century Europe. He was an active, enterprising man and great
ly extended his power by wars and alliances. He obtained from the Holy Rom
an emperor Henry IV the territory between the Scheldt and theDend
er as an imperial fief, as well as the margravate of Antwerp.
In 1028 Baldwin married Adela (Alix), daughter of King Robert II of Franc
e; at her instigation he rebelled against his father but in 1030 peace w
as sworn and the old count continued to rule until his death.
However, when the latter died in 1049 Baldwin married his son Baldw
in VI to Herman's widow Richildis and arranged that the sons of her fir
st marriage were disinherited, thus de facto uniting the Count of Haina
ut with Flanders.
From 1060 to 1067 Baldwin was the guardian for his nephew-by-marriage Ph
ilip I of France, indicating the importance he had acquired in internation
al politics.

In 1779 or the following year, so far as can now be ascertained, there were nine persons settled on the present site of the town of St. Stephen-James and Jeremiah Frost, Benjamin Getchell, Samuel Milberry, Samuel, Jacob and Eben Libby, John Rolfe and Dr. McDonald.1 On the opposite side of the river, (soon afterwards known as Plantation No. 5, now the city of Calais,) three more had made their homes-William Swain, David Ferrol and Daniel Hill.

WILLIAM I of Normandy King of England, Duke of Normandy
1. Life:
Illegitimate son of Robert I, duke of Normandy, he became duke of Norman
dy in 1035 and King of England from 1066 to 1087. William visited Engla
nd in about 1051, when Edward the Confessor may have promised to make h
im his heir. In 1064 Harold Godwinson, Earl of Wessex, was shipwrecked o
ff Ponthieu in France and taken to William, who made him swear to uphold t
he Duke's claim to the English throne. In 1066, on hearing that Harold h
ad been crowned king, William invaded England and defeated Harold at the B
attle of Hastings. He was crowned in London on Christmas Day, 1066.
Between 1066 claim 1072 William crushed the opposition of the Saxon noble
s; he built castles and called in most of the English titles and estates a
nd reassigned them on a feudal basis to his Norman followers. In 1085 he o
rdered a general surveyof lands, their value and their holders that resul
ted in the Domesday Book.

He was the first Norman king of England, also duke of Normandy, who has be
en called one of the first modern kings and is generally regarded as o
ne of the outstanding figures in western European history. William w
as an illegitimate son and is therefore sometimes called William the Basta
rd. Upon thedeath of his father, the Norman nobles, honoring their promi
se to Robert, accepted William as his successor. Rebellion against the you
ng duke broke out almost immediately, however, and his position did not be
come secure until 1047when, with the aid of Henry I, king of France, he w
on a decisive victory over a rebel force near Caen. During a visit in 10
51 to his childless cousin, Edward the Confessor, king of England, Willi
am is said to have obtained Edward's agreement that he should succeed to t
he English throne. In 1053, defying a papal ban, William married a descend
ant of King Alfred the Great, thereby strengthening his claim to the cro
wn of England. Henry I, fearing the strong bond between Normandy and Fland
ers resulting from the marriage, attempted in 1054 and again in 1058 to cr
ush the powerful duke, but on both occasions Williamdefeated the French k
ing's forces. Conquest of England About 1064, the powerful English nobl
e, Harold, earl of Wessex, was shipwrecked on the Norman coast and taken p
risoner by William. He secured his release by swearing to support William
's claim to the English throne. When King Edward died, however, the witena
gemot (royal council) elected Harold king. Determined to make good his cla
im, William secured the sanction of Pope Alexander II (died 1073) for a No
rman invasion of England. The duke and his army landed at Pevensey on Sept
ember 28, 1066. On October 14, the Normans defeated the English forc
es at the celebrated Battle of Hastings, in which Harold was slain. Willi
am then proceeded to London, crushing the resistance he encountered on t
he way. On Christmas Day he was crowned king of England in Westminster Abb
ey. The English did not accept foreign rule without a struggle. William m

William II earned the nickname Rufus either because of his red hair or h
is propensity for anger. William Rufus never married and had no offsprin
g. The manner in which William the Conqueror divided his possessions caus
ed turmoil among his sons: his eldest son Robert received the duchy of Nor
mandy, William Rufus acquired England, and his youngest son Henryinherit
ed 5000 pounds of silver. The contention between the brothers may have exe
rted an influence on the poor light in which William Rufus was historical
ly portrayed.
Many Norman barons owned property on both sides of the English Channel a
nd found themselves in the midst of a tremendous power play. Hesitant to d
eclare sides, most of the barons eventually aligned with Robert due to Wil
liam Rufus' cruelty and avarice. Robert, however, failed to make an appear
ance in England and William Rufus quelled the rebellion. He turned his sig
hts to Normandy in 1089, bribing Norman barons for support and subsequent
lyeroding his brother's power base. In 1096, Robert, tired of governing a
nd quarreling with his brothers, pawned Normandy to William
Rufus for 10,000 marksto finance his departure to the Holy Land on the fi
rst Crusade. Robert regained possession of the duchy after William Rufu
s' death in 1100.
William Rufus employed all the powers of the crown to secure wealth. He ma
nipulated feudal law to the benefit of the royal treasury: shire courts le
vied heavy fines,confiscation and forfeitures were harshly enforced, a
exorbitant inheritance taxes were imposed. His fiscal policies included (a
nd antagonized) the church- William Rufus had no respect for the clergy a
nd they none for him. He bolstered the royal revenue by leaving sees op
en and
diverting the money into his coffers. He treated the Church as nothing mo
re than a rich corporation deserving of heavy taxing at a time when the Ch
urch was gaining in influence through the Gregorian reforms of the eleven
th century. Aided by his sharp-wittedminister, Ranulf Flambard, William R
ufus greatly profited from clerical vacancies. The failed appointment a
nd persecution of Anselm, Abbot of Bec, as theArchbishop of Canterbu
ry in 1093 added fuel to the historical denigration ofWilliam II; most co
ntemporary writings were done by monks, who cared little for the crass, bl
asphemous king.
On August 2, 1100, William Rufus was struck in the eye by an arrow and kil
led while hunting. Whether the arrow was a stray shot or premeditated murd
er is still under debate. 1066 and All That, a satire on medieval governme
nt, remembers William II in a unique manner: "William Rufus was always ve
ry angry and red in the face and was therefore unpopular, so that his dea
th was a Good Thing."

le longevity for her times : 1062-1137.

ankish Kingdom by encouraging her marriage to Count Stephen de Blois-Chart
res circa 1080 and by whom she had 12 children.
3. She witnessed many charters in administering Stephen’s state.
4. She was closely influenced by Ivo de Chartres and Anselmwhich was a re
sult of her multi-faceted,highly erudite upbringing earning unqualified pr
aise from the renowned Bishop of Le Mans, Hildebert for her rule of the st
ate of Blois-Chartres.
5. The first indication that her support forThe Norman Revolution 1058-11
00 was following an unwise track was her unbridled enthusiasm for the thor
oughly Counter-Revolutionary ‘First Crusade’ circa1095-96-1099 to which t
he Red firmly gave no material support but which Adela bullied her husba
nd into joining.
6. Stephen deserted ‘The First Crusade’ at Antioch in 1098. Apparentl
y, he had a financial as well as a military role.
7. Adela forced him to return in 1101 following the bloody capture in 10
99of Jerusalem by the ‘Crusaders’ one of whose central leaders was her br
otherand long-time, Counter-Revolutionary Robert Courtheuse. Stephen di
ed at Ramlah in 1102.
8. She was Henry Beauclerc’s favourite non-conjugal relative and joined h
is Counter-Revolution after 1100.
9. She retired from ruling Blois-Chartres in 1120 and died at Marcigny-sur
-Loire in 1137.
10. She was buried adjacent to Matilda at Caen in L’Abbaye Des Dames wi
th the inscription ‘Adela Filia Regis’ on her tombstone, which from a Norm

Henry I of England (c.1068 – 1 December 1135), called Henry Beauclerc beca
use of his scholarly interests, was the fourth son ofWilliam the Conquero
r. He reigned as King of England from 1100 to 1135, succeeding his brothe
r, William II Rufus. Henry also was known by the nickname "Lion of Justice
", due to the refinements which he brought about in the rudimentary admini
strative and legislative machinery of the time.

Lucilla L Clough, 76, of the Sullivan County Nursing Home, died Saturday at the home. She was born in Warner, N.H., on Nov. 4, 1920, the daughter of Foster Locke Sr., and Susan (Flanders) Locke. She had resided in Claremont for more than 50 years. Mrs. Clough attended school in Warner. She was an active member of the New Hampshire Association for the Blind. Mrs. Clough was the widow of Harold Clough, who died in 1981. They had been married for more than 30 years. Survivors include two sons, Richard Clough of Manassas, VA, and Thomas Clough of Newport; two brothers, Foster Locke Jr., and Henry Locke, both of Warner; two sisters, Mary Nelson of Clinton, Maine and Sue VanLearhoven of Derry, NH; also a special friend, David Boardman of Claremont; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several cousins, nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by three brothers, James, Norman and Vincent Locke. Calling hours are from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday in the Newton Bartlett Funeral Home at 42 Main Street in Newport. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will follow in the Pine Grove Cemetery in Warner.
