Illegitimate son of Robert I, duke of Normandy, he became duke of Norman
dy in 1035 and King of England from 1066 to 1087. William visited Engla
nd in about 1051, when Edward the Confessor may have promised to make h
im his heir. In 1064 Harold Godwinson, Earl of Wessex, was shipwrecked o
ff Ponthieu in France and taken to William, who made him swear to uphold t
he Duke's claim to the English throne. In 1066, on hearing that Harold h
ad been crowned king, William invaded England and defeated Harold at the B
attle of Hastings. He was crowned in London on Christmas Day, 1066.
Between 1066 claim 1072 William crushed the opposition of the Saxon noble
s; he built castles and called in most of the English titles and estates a
nd reassigned them on a feudal basis to his Norman followers. In 1085 he o
rdered a general surveyof lands, their value and their holders that resul
ted in the Domesday Book.

He was the first Norman king of England, also duke of Normandy, who has be
en called one of the first modern kings and is generally regarded as o
ne of the outstanding figures in western European history. William w
as an illegitimate son and is therefore sometimes called William the Basta
rd. Upon thedeath of his father, the Norman nobles, honoring their promi
se to Robert, accepted William as his successor. Rebellion against the you
ng duke broke out almost immediately, however, and his position did not be
come secure until 1047when, with the aid of Henry I, king of France, he w
on a decisive victory over a rebel force near Caen. During a visit in 10
51 to his childless cousin, Edward the Confessor, king of England, Willi
am is said to have obtained Edward's agreement that he should succeed to t
he English throne. In 1053, defying a papal ban, William married a descend
ant of King Alfred the Great, thereby strengthening his claim to the cro
wn of England. Henry I, fearing the strong bond between Normandy and Fland
ers resulting from the marriage, attempted in 1054 and again in 1058 to cr
ush the powerful duke, but on both occasions Williamdefeated the French k
ing's forces. Conquest of England About 1064, the powerful English nobl
e, Harold, earl of Wessex, was shipwrecked on the Norman coast and taken p
risoner by William. He secured his release by swearing to support William
's claim to the English throne. When King Edward died, however, the witena
gemot (royal council) elected Harold king. Determined to make good his cla
im, William secured the sanction of Pope Alexander II (died 1073) for a No
rman invasion of England. The duke and his army landed at Pevensey on Sept
ember 28, 1066. On October 14, the Normans defeated the English forc
es at the celebrated Battle of Hastings, in which Harold was slain. Willi
am then proceeded to London, crushing the resistance he encountered on t
he way. On Christmas Day he was crowned king of England in Westminster Abb
ey. The English did not accept foreign rule without a struggle. William m

Isabel de Verdun Lady Ferrers of Groby
(21 March 1317- 25 July 1349), was an English heiress, and the eldest daughter of Elizabeth de Clare, and through her, the great-granddaughter of King Edward I of England. She was the wife of Henry de Ferrers, 2nd Lord Ferrers of Groby.[1]
Family and lineage
Isabel was born at Amesbury Priory, Wiltshire, on 21 March 1317, the only child of the marriage of Theobald de Verdun, 2nd Lord Verdun, Justiciar of Ireland (born 8 September 1278) and Lady Elizabeth de Clare (16 September 1295- 4 November 1360). She was born eight months after the death of her father, which occurred on 27 July 1316, of typhoid. He had abducted her mother from Bristol Castle in early 1316, and married her shortly afterwards on 4 February. Elizabeth was his second wife, his first wife having been Maud Mortimer (c.1289- 18 September 1312). Isabel had three half-sisters from her father's prior marriage, Joan de Verdun, Elizabeth de Verdun, and Margery de Verdun.
Isabel, along with her three de Verdon half-sisters, was a co-heiress of her father. She is occasionally referred to as Heiress of Ludlow.
Theobald was Elizabeth's second husband, her first husband John de Burgh had died in a minor skirmish in Galway, Ireland on 18 June 1313. She had a son by de Burgh, William Donn de Burgh, 3rd Earl of Ulster (17 September 1312- 6 June 1333), who was Isabel's uterine half-brother. William would later marry Maud of Lancaster, by whom he had a daughter Elizabeth de Burgh, suo jure 4th Countess of Ulster (6 July 1332- 10 December 1363). Following the death of her brother Gilbert at Bannockburn in 1314, Elizabeth, along with her two sisters, Margaret and Eleanor, became one of the greatest heiresses in England. Her uncle, King Edward II of England, ordered her to return to England, where he planned to select a husband for her from among his supporters. She was placed in Bristol Castle where Verdun would afterwards abduct her, to the fury of King Edward.
After her husband's death, Elizabeth, pregnant with Verdun's child, fled to Amesbury Priory and placed herself under the protection of her aunt, Mary de Burgh, who was one of the nuns. It was there that she gave birth to Isabel.
Isabel's birth is recorded in an entry of King Edward II's Wardrobe Accounts, as well as the King's gift of a silver-gilt cup which valued at one pound, ten shillings.
Her paternal grandparents were Theobald de Verdun, 1st Lord Verdun and Margery de Bohun, and her maternal grandparents were Gilbert de Clare, 6th Earl of Hertford, 3rd Earl of Gloucester, and Joan of Acre, the daughter of King Edward I of England and Eleanor of Castile.
On 3 May 1317, when Isabel was just about six weeks old, her mother married Sir Roger D'Amory, Lord D'Amory, Baron of Armoy (c.1290- 14 March 1322) a favourite of King Edward II, who encouraged the match. Isabel's wardship and marriage rights were awarded to her stepfather. From her mother's marriage to D'Amory, Isabel had a uterine half-sister, Elizabeth D'Amory, (born shortly before 23 May 1318- 5 February 1361), who would later marry Sir John Bardolf, by whom she had issue. Following D'Amory's participation in Lancaster's rebellion of 1322, against his former friend and patron, the King and the latter's new favourites, the Despensers, the wardship and marriage rights were forfeit to the Crown and eventually passed to Queen Isabella. Roger D'Amory died on 14 March 1322, two days before the Battle of Boroughbridge where the rebels were defeated by the Royal forces. Isabel, not quite five years old, together with her sister Elizabeth and her mother, was imprisoned at Barking Abbey.
Marriage and issue
Isabel married Henry de Ferrers, 2nd Lord Ferrers of Groby (born before 1303- 15 September 1343) in 1328 at Newbold Verdon, Leicestershire. He was the son of William de Ferrers, 1st Lord Ferrers of Groby and Ellen de Seagrove. She was eleven years old at the time of her marriage. The marriage produced at least five children, four of whom survived infancy:
· Infant, whose name and sex is not known, died shortly after birth.
· William de Ferrers, 3rd Lord Ferrers of Groby (28 February 1333 Newbold Verdon- 8 January 1371), married Margaret de Ufford, daughter of Robert d'Ufford, 1st Earl of Suffolk and Margaret de Norwich, by whom he had issue, including Henry de Ferrers, 4th Lord Ferrers of Groby, who married Joan de Hoo, and Margaret de Ferrers, who married Thomas de Beauchamp, 12th Earl of Warwick.
· Ralph de Ferrers, married Joan de Grey of Codnor.
· Elizabeth de Ferrers (died 22 October 1375), married firstly David de Strathbogie, 12th Earl of Atholl, by whom she had issue. She married secondly, John Malewayn.[2]
· Philippa de Ferrers (died 10 August 1384), married Guy de Beauchamp, son of Thomas de Beauchamp, 11th Earl of Warwick and Katherine Mortimer, by whom she had two daughters.
Death
Isabel died on 25 July 1349 of the plague. Her husband had died on 15 September 1343 and was buried in Ulvescroft Priory.

From her mother's marriage to D'Amory, Isabel had a uterine half-sister, Elizabeth D'Amory, (born shortly before 23 May 1318- 5 February 1361), who would later marry Sir John Bardolf, by whom she had issue. Following D'Amory's participation in Lancaster's rebellion of 1322, against his former friend and patron, the King and the latter's new favourites, the Despensers, the wardship and marriage rights were forfeit to the Crown and eventually passed to Queen Isabella. Roger D'Amory died on 14 March 1322, two days before the Battle of Boroughbridge where the rebels were defeated by the Royal forces. Isabel, not quite five years old, together with her sister Elizabeth and her mother, was imprisoned at Barking Abbey.
Marriage and issue
Isabel married Henry de Ferrers, 2nd Lord Ferrers of Groby (born before 1303- 15 September 1343) in 1328 at Newbold Verdon, Leicestershire. He was the son of William de Ferrers, 1st Lord Ferrers of Groby and Ellen de Seagrove. She was eleven years old at the time of her marriage. The marriage produced at least five children, four of whom survived infancy:
· Infant, whose name and sex is not known, died shortly after birth.
· William de Ferrers, 3rd Lord Ferrers of Groby (28 February 1333 Newbold Verdon- 8 January 1371), married Margaret de Ufford, daughter of Robert d'Ufford, 1st Earl of Suffolk and Margaret de Norwich, by whom he had issue, including Henry de Ferrers, 4th Lord Ferrers of Groby, who married Joan de Hoo, and Margaret de Ferrers, who married Thomas de Beauchamp, 12th Earl of Warwick.
· Ralph de Ferrers, married Joan de Grey of Codnor.
· Elizabeth de Ferrers (died 22 October 1375), married firstly David de Strathbogie, 12th Earl of Atholl, by whom she had issue. She married secondly, John Malewayn.[2]
· Philippa de Ferrers (died 10 August 1384), married Guy de Beauchamp, son of Thomas de Beauchamp, 11th Earl of Warwick and Katherine Mortimer, by whom she had two daughters.
Death
Isabel died on 25 July 1349 of the plague. Her husband had died on 15 September 1343 and was buried in Ulvescroft Priory.

Richard Grey, 6th Lord Grey, of Wilton, son and heir, was born about
1393. He accompanied the King to France in August 1415, being in the
retinue of the Earl of Dorset. He was married for the first time, it is
said, to Blanche Vache. They had two sons. He was married for the second
time in 1427 to MargaretFerrers, daughter of William de Ferrers, Lord
Ferrers, of Groby, by his wifePhilippe Clifford. They had two sons.
Richard Grey, 6th Lord Grey, died testate on 13 or 20 August 1442, and
was buried at Bletchley. His widow was married for the second time before
14 February 1445/6 to Thomas Grey, Knight, of Richemount, county Bedford,
afterwards Lord Richemount Grey (a Lancastrian, captured and executed in
1461, some time after the battle of Towton). She died on 16 January
1451/2.

Richard Neville, 5th Earl of Salisbury (1400 ? December 31, 1460) was a Yorkist leader during the early parts of the Wars of the Roses.
He was the son of Ralph Neville, 1st Earl of Westmorland, by his second wife, Joan Beaufort, a daughter of John of Gaunt. Despite being a younger son, he was able to make a great marriage, to Alice Montagu, Countess of Salisbury, probably due to his royal descent on his mother's side.
After his marriage (1420) Salisbury was given high posts in the north of England, including Warden of the Western March of Scotland 1420 - 1435. He was also Constable at the coronation of his cousin Henry VI.
However Salisbury turned to the cause of Richard, Duke of York, who made him Lord Chancellor in 1455. When King Henry tried to assert his independence and dismiss Richard as Protector, Salisbury joined him in fighting at the First Battle of St Albans, claiming that he was acting in self-defence. After the Battle of Blore Heath, in which he was notably successful, Salisbury escaped to Calais, having been specifically excluded from a royal pardon. He was beheaded the day after the Battle of Wakefield.
Amongst Salisbury's children were Richard Neville, 16th Earl of Warwick and John Neville, 1st Marquess of Montagu.
