Notes: Marriage
Francis Warde and his family appeared to have left the parish of Filby shortly after the death of his mother in February 1609, and settled in the parish of Saint Mary in South Walsham about 8 miles to the west. Susanna died and Francis remarried on 23 August 1627 to Margaret (Denton) Holle. She was the widow of Robert Holle of North Walsham. Eventually they moved to Great Yarmouth which is 5 miles southeast of Filby and on the coast of the North Sea. His will names only those children who were then living in England. Two daughters and possibly a son had gone to New England and these were not mentioned.
"6 September 1645 - the will of Francis Ward of Great Yarmouth, county Norfolk, yeoman, being weak & sick in body...to Francis Ward of South Walsham my son, all my houses, messuages, lands & tenements in Great Yarmouth after the decease of Margaret my wife, conditional that he pay unto Susan my daughter £15, unto William Ward my son £10...Margaret my wife shall have all such goods & household stuff as were hers before marriage...residue to Margaret my wife for life, then to daughter Susan...other goods & chattels & money owing unto Francis Ward my son, he to be sole executor...Nicholas Lackington of Great Yarmouth, gentleman, to be supervisor...Witnesses: John Willcock, Thomas Jollir. Proved 29 January 1647/8."

Posted at Rootsweb: CAPTAIN SAMUEL PEASE.
ALLUSION has been made in a previous chapter to Captain Samuel Pease. His history so far as can be ascertained is very brief; but the generous offer of his services to the Governor and Council of the Colony of Massachusetts Bay, and daring bravery displayed in attacking and fighting the armed pirates who infested the New England coast in 1689, merit a brief chapter devoted to his memory in this work. We regret we have been unable to learn anything of his local or family history. We can not find where he lived, or to what family in America he belonged. Mr. S. G. Drake in his history of Boston says he belonged in Salem. We have examined the same sources of information he had and fail to come to his conclusions. All we can learn of his home is that it was in New England. Felt mentions him in his "Annals of Salem," not as we think, however, because he was a resident of the place, but because he was engaged in fighting the pirates who destroyed the commerce of Salem.
Nothing is revealed of his history earlier than the summer of 1689. From a document on file in the office of Secretary of State at Boston, bearing date July 18, 1689, we learn he was then master of the "ship Fortune belonging to his Highness Frederick Carmine, Duke of Courland." At this time he had just returned from a voyage to the islands of Madeira and May. He had taken in a cargo of salt at the island of May with the intention of proceeding directly to the island of Tobago, there to be paid his wages and "cleared" "at liberty to proceed either to Courland or return home to New England." But before leaving May, Captain Pease learned that a French man-of-war had been making havoc with the English merchant vessels in the vicinity of the West Indies, and that the French were determined to take Tobago. He accordingly resolved to take Barbadoes in his way there. Here he learned that great scarcity of provisions prevailed on the island of Tobago, and that the people were about to desert it. Captain Pease then returned to Boston, the place from which he had shipped, and asked of the "Honorable Council" that he might dispose of as much of his cargo of salt as would victual his vessel, and allow him to proceed to the end of his voyage. From the sequel it hardly seems probable that Captain Pease did go on to Tobago afterwards.
During the months of August and September of this year, New England commerce was greatly annoyed with pirates who prowled upon the coast. Captain Samuel Pease volunteered his services to the Colonial Government to go out and break them up. The sloop Mary was fitted out and Captain Pease was commissioned September 30, 1689, to "surprise (and in case of their making resistance) by force of arms to take Thomas Hawkins and Thomas Ponnd, who, with a number of armed men joined with them, had partially seized several vessels belonging to their majesties' subjects." The sloop Mary sailed out of Boston harbor Friday, October 4; the enemy was found in the vicinity of Martha's Vineyard Sound and
attacked the same day. The pirate crew commanded by Thomas Ponnd made a desperate and sanguinary resistance, but the daring bravery and coolness of Captain Pease and his men compelled them to surrender. The struggle cost Captain Pease his life, having received wounds in his arm, thigh and side. His vessel made sail for Newport, R, I., which place it reached Saturday, October 5. Surgeons were procured to care for the wounded. Here Captain Pease remained until the 11th of October when he was carried to his vessel with the intention of proceeding to Boston. His wounds began bleeding afresh and he was again taken on shore where he died the next day.(*) The loss of the noble captain awakened a deep sympathy for his family in the Colonial Government. It sent requests to the different towns in the Province that collections be taken up in the churches for the benefit of his family consisting of a "widow and four orphan children(+) in low and destitute circumstances."??§
(*)From papers on file in the Clerk's Office of the Supreme Judicial Court at Boston, and printed in the New England Historical and Genealogical Register, Vol. II.
(+)From the marriage of Martha Pease of Cambridge to Hugh Clark in 1700, and that of Hannah Pease of Cambridge to William Brown who was born 1684, we are inclined to think that a family of Peases may have lived in Cambridge toward the close of the seventeenth century. Possibly it might have been the family of Captain Samuel Pease.
??From papers on file in the office of the Secretary of State.

He also had daughters Martha (m Hugh Clark in 1700) and Mary
Another Rootsweb posting, from Field/Estes & Stuntz/Fuller Ancestors - Contact Judith Mae Field Stuntz: Although some claim that Capt. Samuel PEASE was the son of John
PEASE and Mary BROWNING, the limited facts now known suggest that he
may not be. Too, Samuel may have died 23 JUL 1706, and not 1689

GEORGE BRUCE1, in the early records written BRUSH [the u long], was the first of the name in this country, of whom we have any account. It is said that he came from Scotland; which indeed is highly probable. He settled in Woburn, near Boston; at what time we are not informed; and married there, Dec. 28, 1659, ELIZABETH CLARK, born in Watertown, Nov. 26, 1642, daughter of William Clark, aweaver by occupation, and doubtless also a cultivator of the soil, who was of Watertown, 1631; freeman, 1639; and who removed to Woburn about 1654. Margery, wife of William Clark, accompanied him from England.
Mary, the elder sisterof Elizabeth Clark, born Dec. 10, 1640, married, Dec. 27, 1655, William Locke,of Woburn. They are the

General Notes: Child - Ephraim Severance
Many of Seth Severance's descendants will not agree that this Ephraim Severance is Seth's father.
My reasons for including him are:
1. Death Certificate for Seth's son, George Edward Severance, lists Seth's place of birth as Dexter. The informant was , George's wife, Flora Chubbuck Severance. She was born in 1868 and may have known Seth Severance.
2. The 1820 Census lists Ephraim Severance in Dexter/ Dover Maine.
The 1850 Census lists Ephraim and wife Jamina living in Kilmarnock, near Dexter.
3. Seth and Maria Sweet Severance;s last child was named Jamina Severance. She was called "Jennie"
Flora Chubbuck Severance told Lucille Severance Carroll that Seth's father came from NH to Maine. She said he came with a brother. The Above Ephraim Severance was born in Bradford Center , NH, son of Abel Severance and Martha Bruce.

This database is a compilation of names and biographical sketches of pioneers to the province between 1623 and 1660. Collected from a variety of contemporary sources, it was originally published in 1908 and contains over 1000 records. Each record provides the pioneer's name and biographical sketch. It includes spelling variations of the pioneer's surname and cross-referencing aids to help the researcher. In a few entries, information regarding New Hampshire pioneers from the same period is also included, p. 153.
