The Scudamore Family Origins
The Scudamores appear to have been Normans (or Bretons) who were in Engla
nd building castles before the conquest. The family no doubt owed its ear
ly prominence in both Herefordshire and Wiltshire to Alfred de Marlboroug
h, a great tenant-in-chief of William the Conqueror at the time of the Dom
esday Book in 1086.
Records show that Alfred was a nephew of Osbern (surnamed Penecost) who w
as one of the colony of King Edward the Confessor's Norman favourites in H
erefordshire long before the conquest. Osbern is the man who probably bui
lt the castle at Ewyas Harold in Herefordshire before1052.
Ralph, who was born about 1040, was an undertenant of Harold de Ewyas a
nd is, beyond doubt, the ancestor of the Scudamore family. He was mention
edfive times in the Domesday Book as a tenant of both Alfred de Marlborou
gh and William de Ecouis, another great tenant-in chief of the Conqueror.
The tenants in the Domesday Book are almost never found with a surname b
ut examinationof the manors held by the Scudamore's in 1243 in both Heref
ordshire and Wiltshire showed they were formerly held by the Ralph in t
he Domesday Book.
Because surnames were generally not used in those early days, a numb
er of different spellings of the family name emerged over the years, but t
hey are all partof the same family.

Life in the Herefordshire branch of the family was very different from th
at in Wiltshire, because the land South and West of the River Wye was repe
atedly laid waste by the invading Welsh. Therefore, life revolved abo
ut a network of castles that had been constructed along the border by t
he Normans. Ralph was enumerated among the nine knights held at Ewyas Cast
le in 1086. The Lords of the castles established a rotation of duty and ea
ch knight did a certain term in the year with his tenants. This service w
as required of both Reginald de Scudemer and his brother Walter.
The Scudamore family in Wiltshire was seated at Opitom (Upton Scudamore) b
ut sadly this branch of the family died out in 1382.
The Scudamore family in Herefordshire was seated at Poston in Vowchur
ch in the 12th and 13th centuries. In addition they held Corras in Kentchu
rch
The succession at Poston in the 12th century went through a series of thr
ee men all named Walter Scudamore and it is difficult to distinguish betwe
en them. Walter I, son of Ralph was born in the last quarter of the 11th c
entury
Walter II gave lands to the nearby Abbey Dore.
Rowlestoneventually became the seat of the senior branch of the Scudamor
es in Herefordshire and remained so until 1521, although by the early 15
th century the twojunior branches at Kentchurch and Holme Lacy eclipsed t
he main stream in prominence. However the main stream has, through the age
s, been much more virileand today most of the West Country Scudamores co
me from this line.
The earliest information from research done by Warren Skidmore of USA a
nd John Hunt of the UK indicates that the Scudamore family owes its ear
ly prominence in Wiltshire and Herefordshire to Alfred De Marlborough, a g
reat tenant-in-chief ofWilliam the Conqueror at the time of the Domesd
ay Book . His undertenant Ralph (not shown with a surname) was born abo
ut 1040 and was beyond doubt ancestor to the Scudamore family. He was ment
ioned a number of times in the Domesday Book of 1086 as a tenant of Alfr
ed De Marlborough.
(Surnames were not usedin those days and as a result a number of differe
nt spellings emerged over the centuries, the main ones today being Scudamo
re and Skidmore).
It appears that Ralph had three sons, Reginald, who was the ancestor of t
he Scudamore line at Optone (Upton Scudamore) in Wiltshire and Walt
er I of Corras in Kentchurch, who was ancestor of the Scudamore lines main
ly in Herefordshire.

Sir Dunning was a traitor to his Saxon heritage and was appointed by the Norman invaders as the first Norman Lord of Lathom. He and his wife, Lady Marigard De Essex are from the 2nd generation in an unbroken line of 35 generations. They share this distinction with Lord Henry De Chester, Jr. and his wife, Lady Helen Tudor. He died of pneumonia.
The original meaning of the pla ce name Lathom or Latham was 'the barn house', which probably meant a warehouse or storehouse. The 2 earliest names were the Chapelry of Lathom, in County Lancaster, England, and Latham, in Yorkshire, England
The first one to bear the Latham surname was a Saxon traitor named Dunning, who was living in County Lancaster about the time of the Norman conquest in 1066 A.D. Because of his collaboration with the Normans and his betrayal of his Saxon heritage, the Normans rewarded Dunning with the lordship of Lathom, the title of Earl, and with a knighthood. Thus Dunning, traitor to the Saxon people, became Sir Dunning Latham, Earl of Lathom in the Spring of 1067 A.D.
In both early English and American records, the surname Latham or Lathom has taken on many different spellings. The most common of these are: Latham, Lathem, Lathim, Lathom, Lathome, Lathum, Le athom, Leethem, Lethem and Lathom. The probably reason for the various spellings in the fact that so many of our early ancestors could neither read nor write. Whenever it was necessary for a name to be written down by someone who could read and write, it was sounded out by different people differently and over the years as literacy improved, the wrong spellings have become the traditional way the various families chose to spell it. The spelling Latham is the one that is the most common usage and is surely the original spelling. In early English history, 7 distinct clans of Lathams emerged and could be found in the following counties, Lancaster, which was Sir Dunnings direct descendents, York, Somerset, Chester, Essex, Worcester and in London. Over the years the Latham family has been prolific, and many of them produced very large families indeed!
The average sized Latham family has been between 7 to 10 children. Early families have been founded both by landed gentry and by the lower landless classes referred to as yeoman.
General Notes: Child - Siward Fitzdunning De Lathom
Siward was very young when he was confirmed Earl of Lathom. He w as only 19 yearsold. He was mainly confirmed Lord of Lathom, because of the ce asless efforts of Lord Henry De Chester, Jr. Siward was confirmed Lord of Lathom on 11 Nov 1092 and married his wife only 11 days later.
It is said never having known his own mother. Siward became very close to his father. He was said never to have gotten over his father's death. He also couldn't get over his wife's and 2 daughters deaths, and committed suicide by hanging himself. Because he committed suicide he wasn't allowed to be buried in the fraveyard at the Chapelry of Lathom. Instead he was buried in unblessed ground outside this cemetery.
