Alexander was a L.L.D. educator, lecturer, editor, mechanical andelectrical engineer, inherited the physical characteristics of the men ofthe Pine Tree State. In 1864-64, he served with the 110th Ohio Regimentof Volunteers under Colonel J. Warren Kiefer in the Shenandoah Valley.At the close of the war, he became a student and instructor at theOberlin College in Ohio. After his marriage, he went to Hillsdale,Michigan, where he established the Hillsdale Business College, which ayear later, became the Commerical and Telegraphic Department of OberlinCollege. He remained there for thirty years as a teacher of CommercialLaw,Political Economy and Telegraphy. He was a member of the AmericanInstitute of Electrical and Mechanical Engineers and of the George H.Thomas Post of G.A.R. He was a member of the Disciple Church and wasnamedfor the leader of that denomination and for many years waspublisher and editor of the Hillsdale College Herald.

From York Deeds: Vol. 8, Vol. 208: Abraham Rideout, John Hutchins, Samuel Palmer and Ben Thruston bought land from Joseph Shaw, 17 Feb 1716. Abraham Rideout of Haverhill was scrivener ("scribe" or "writer") for the County of Essex, province of ye Mass Bay Co., in New England.
The preponderance of evidence is that Abraham was buried in Haverhill however there is no record. But when you review the facts it is near certain that he is buried in the Pentucket Cemetery Haverhill MA.
Per Haverhill VRs Abraham married Jemima Davis on 14 Mar 1714 in Haverhill. Jemima's family had lived in Haverhill for generations and her G grandfather was one of its founders. When Abraham died in about 1724 it would have been up to Jemima where he was buried and the family cemetery was the Pentucket. Then 13 years later when Abrahams son Benjamin died she buried him in Pentucket, likely next to his father and his stone can be seen here.
Jemima then married Dr. James Holgate and they had six children four died from the throat distemper plague that hit Haverhill in 1737 and all are buried at Pentucket Cemetery and their tombstones all in the same area can be found at the above web site. Tombstones for Abraham, Jemima and Dr. Holgate have never been found but it would be unthinkable that Jemima Abraham and Dr Holgate were not buried with their children in the family plot. It is likely that their stones fell over as many others have in that cemetery and are now a few inches below ground level. As to Abraham's first wife Mary, Abraham would have seen to her burial so not at all sure about her.

Lincoln,sc. December 8 1761. Nicolas Rideout, Jr and Sarah Oliver both of Georgetown were joined together in Marriage by me, Patrick Drummond, Just. Peace.
Nicholas joined the Perley Colony and migrated to Maugerville, New Brunswick, Canada in 1762. He was the ancestor of most of the Rideouts of New Brunswick.
In 1765, the government of Nova Scotia granted Nicholas some 500 acres of land in Maugerville. In 1757, he was a member of the Georgetown Militia. It is said he was a ship builder and worked with his father. He went to New Brunswick with the "Perley Colony", which was composed of a large number of Massachusetts and Connecticut families. One account says these people went to N.B. in one of Rideout's ships. They were nearly all farmers and most of them sympathized with the American Colonies. Among these Maugerville Colonists, Nicholas seems to have had great weight and influence. He had quite a little wealth and owned several vessels. In Kidder's valuable book called Eastern Maine and Nova Scotia during the Revolution, is an extract of a letter from Colonel John Allen to the Massachusetts Council, Boston, 25 Feb. 1777.
"I must beg leave at this time to acquaint your Honours, that the inhabitants of the county of Subury in Nova Scotia, now a county in N. B. had authorized me to appear in their behalf and agreeable to instructions would make known their warm and zealous attachment for the United States. Esteeming themselves the subjects of the States and are determined to defend the cause to their utmost." The American Colonies then sent troops to Sudbury Co. to protect these people, and John Allen was made "1st Colonel for the Expedition to the St. John River. Forts were built near Frederiction and the committees of both houses resolved to send ammunition to the inhabitants of Sudbury Co. to use in helping the American Colonies.
In the histories of this time, we read in several places that "Colonel Allen is stopping with the Rideouts in Maugerville. Lt Kidder says, Col. Allen sent a very particular letter to Mr. Rideout of commendation for his attachment to the cause desiring him to procure something that was needed, and send in Rideout boats. After the Revolution many descendants of Nicholas Rideout returned to Maine and didn't go back to New Brunswick. Rideout was always a good friend to the American Colonies.

Nicholas sept his boyhood on a farm and in the common schools of NewGloucester and Pownal where he acquired the habits of industry andeconomy.
He was a most successful and respected farmer of New Gloucester, his farmconsisted of 250 acres, and he was considered among the bestagriculturists of Cumberland Co. They had furniture made from heuntimber taken from the lod block house built in 1754.
He was in politics, a republican, a member of the Congregational Church,a thrifty, enterprising and charitable man. A picture of his home and heis to be found in the "History of Cumberland Co., Maine," p. 331.

Jacob Rideout was born Jan 8, 1806 in Sheffield, Sunbury Co., the s/oOliver
Rideout & Susannah Seaman.
He first married, May 7, 1831, in Carleton County, Mary Nevers Kearney. They
had a total of 11 children, and
Mary died in Carleton Co. (probably Peel) July 4, 1860.
He married Julia Squires in Nov. of the same year. I do not have access to
the 1861 census of Carleton
County, but in 1871, they are living in Peel with a daughter Sophia, from
Jacob's first marriage, and
Jacob & Julia's daughter, who is listed as Adeline, born 1861. Between 1871
and 1881, they moved to
Castle Hill, Aroostook County, Maine, where in 1881, Jacob & Julia are
living with Jacob's son Noah
from his first marriage, and daughter Harriet A. (Harriet Adeline), b. 1861.
As far as I know, Harriet Adeine was the only child born of this marriage.
Jacob d. Aug 14, 1890 in Castle
Hill. Julia died in Sept, 1905 (place unknown).

Jephthah Rideout</b> was born<u><b><sup> </u></b></sup>about 1809 in New Brunswick. He died on 21 Jun 1881. He was buried<u><b><sup> 2 </u></b></sup> in Ortonville, Victoria, New Brunswick, Canada. Jepthah or Japeth or Japthey Rideout migrated from Maugerville to Carleton County between 1821 and 1826 together with his parents and most if not all his 12 or 13 brothers and sisters. ("The Rideouts" a four page typewritten document from the Family Histories collection, Author not cited, no date, Provincial Archives of New Brunswick [PANB])
In 1851 he petitioned for "about sixty to 100 Acres of Crown Land" inAndover Parish, Victoria County, on the St. John River near Ezekiel Rideout and across from the mouth of the Salmon River. "Petitioner wishes this land on the road system." His age given as 45. (See PANB microfilm F 4243)
Also in 1851 "Japthey" was found living in Perth Parish, in what is now Victoria County, New Brunswick with his wife Ann and children. His neighbour was his father-in-law, George Dixon. He is described as a 42year old farmer. (See http://www.upperstjohn.com/1851/perth5.htm#13).
In 1859 Jephtha again petioned for land. (We haven't seen PANB microfilm F 9021, as cited in http://archives.gnb.ca/APPS/GovRecs/...)
By 1861 Jephthah Rideout appears as a 62 year old Baptist farmer residing in Grand Falls Parish, Victoria County, New Brunswick. On 11 January of the same year he petitioned for one hundred acres of land "South of [his father-in-law] Geo Dixons No. 131 Grand Falls." (See PANB 9026). (Grand Falls Parish was created from Andover Parish).

BOOK - RIDEOUTS IN AMERICA
As a starting item, here is a rather startling story that really happenedright here in our own area, around the turn of the century. Whilethestory has been in the family since that time, authentic confirmation wasnot available until recently, when a clipping, apparently from TheAdvertiser, was found by my father, A. R. Rigby, among the myriadclippings which had been saved by my mother during her long lifetime.Herewith is a copy of that clipping.
BODY NATURALLY EMBALMED
Twelve years ago, Mrs. Nathaniel Rideout died at her home at Sommerville,and was buried in what was called, "The Rideout burying ground," which issituated near the school house, halfway between the highway andtheriver. Last week friends of the deceased decided to disinter the bodyand place it beside the remains of her husband which reposed in one ofthe cemeteries near Hartland. John Kay of Waterville was employed to dothe work and he had several assistants. One man present was A. G. Downeyof Sommerville. The outside coffin was found to have beenquite decayedand the inside was in more or less the same condition.A new outside boxand cover was secured and preparations made ready toraise the body tothe surface of the earth. In life she was a very large woman and it wasexpected to be no easy task. Blocks and tackle were secured and it wasfound that even this material was insufficient. More men and more tacklehad to be brought and those present say the body must have weighed noless than seven hundred pounds. The remains seemed to be neitherpetrified nor fossilized, as the color of the features were mostlifelike. To look at the face one could scarcely believe that life hadfled longer than 24 hours. Exposure to the atmosphere made no change andevery appearance was that a natural embalming process had taken place.
The graveyard is situated near and on lower ground than a swampy piece ofland, and the water was running under the coffin. The water there isheavily laden with lime which must have had the embalming effect.
It is odd that certain vital statistics were left out of this story byMr. Stevens who, although he must have been rather young at the time,must have known local family relationships. The late Mrs. Rideout inquestion was the mother of a large family of boys and girls. She was themother of the late Mrs. Samuel Hallett of Upper Brighton, and grandmotherof the late Mrs. A. R. Rigby which made her the great-grandmotherof thewriter. After her death, her husband was taken into the home of hisdaughter, Mrs. Samuel Hallett, and was buried from this home, inthenearby Hallett cemetery. It was because of this that it was decided tomove the body of Mrs. Rideout from the Sommerville to lie beside that ofher late husband.
The home now occupied by Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Faulkner is a modernizedversion of the original Rideout home. The house next door to theFaulkner home but on the downhill side, now occupied by Mr. and Mrs.LloydDavis, was built by Mr. Rideout for one of his daughters. The oldgraveyard downhill from the People's Church, still shows signs from itspast, there being remains of a headstone indicating that a Scot and histwo young sons were also buried there. Evidently the site was being usedas a community burying ground.
Among the citizens of this area who are great-grandchildren of thisunusual couple are also Max Rideout and Harry Hatfield as well as HowardKennedy and Clifford Rideout.
The writer feels most fortunate in possessing a framed photograph of Mrs.Rideout, taken when she was apparently quite a young woman.
The following history of the Nathaniel Rideout family, which was copiedby the writer from the Rideout Family Bible should be of considerableinterest to many of the descendants. The Bible was at that time inpossession of Henry Oscar Tompkins (since deceased) of Milltown, Maine, agrandson of Nathaniel. The home has since been broken up, and the presentwhereabouts of the Bible is not known to the writer.

He was killed in an automobile accident on U.S. Route 1A, at Easton Centre, Maine, on
Saturday, Sept. 10, 1966.

The Observer (Hartland, N.B.), 30 Nov 1961, p. 1: The death occurred suddenly on Thur.
evening in the Carleton Memorial Hospital at Woodstock of Mrs. GeorgeRideout of
Somerville. Although not in the best of health for some years, Mrs Rideout had been
around as usual and her sudden passing was a shock to her family anda wide circle of
friends. She complained of a headache on Thur. which grew more severeand was taken to
hospital where she later succumbed. The former Velma E. MacCallum, she was born at
Ashland 61 years ago. She had lived all her married life in Somerville. She was a member
of the Hartland Baptist Church and was active in the missionary society, and was also a
member of the Somerville Women's Institute. Surviving are her husband, one daughter,
Mrs. Hollis Dickinson of Windsor; three brothers, Edwin, Woodstock, Harry & Percy,
Royal Oak, Mich.; and two sisters, Mrs. Richard Pratt, Lower Brighton, and Mrs.
Raymond Gray, Newburg. The funeral was held from the late home on Sun. afternoon,
conducted by Rev. Raymond Warner... Interment was in Hartland's Greenwood Cemetery.

Johnson was the son of Stephen Rideout and Abigail Smart. He was theking of Bath, Me., Shipbuilders. He was a member of the early firedepartment and the civil government. He was a son of a Bowdoin farmer.Hebegan his career as a day laborer in the shipyard of Peleg Talman. Hebegan building ships in 1825 and master builder of 72 vessels andaccumulated a fortune of $100,000. His son, Johnson, was probably themost skillful Bath designer of wooden ships. Some of his ships wereLafayette, Princess, Powhattan, Rideout, Ironsides, Prince of Wales, Cityof Bath, Mermaid, Bristol, Liverpool, Queen Victoria, N. Carolina, S.Carolina, Harriet Augusta, Sea Queen, Glove, Tremonton, Lynos, Norway,Amazon, Saxon, Charlotte, Alice. This information was sent by hisgranddaughter, Margaret Foote.

He was born February 22, 1911, the eldest son of the late Leslieand Thursa (Rideout) Stockford of Lansdowne, NB. He was predeceased by his three wives, Myra, Edna and Grace; and three brothers, Weslie, Milton and Curtis; and one sister, Mrs. Ralph Campbell (Edith). Gordonis survived by two nieces, Doreen Stockford-Owen-Jones, Delta, BC; Shirley Stockford-Bruce, Abbotsford, BC; and one nephew, Larry Stockford, New Westminister, BC; as well as stepchildren and several cousins. died at his home after a lingering illness of heart disease. He was the son of the late George
Rideout and was 65 years old the day he died. He was twice married, his first wife being
Miss Sophia Shaw who predeceased him eight years ago. He leaves to mourn his wife; one
daughter, Mrs. Perry H. Bishop of Coronation, a daughter-in-law Mrs. Annie Rideout of E.
Florenceville; one grandchild Glenna Bishop; three sisters, Mrs. Charles Stevens, Hartland,
Mrs. Nelson Day and Mrs. Harry Shaw of Washington, and a number of other relatives.
The funeral was held from the home on Sunday afternoon by Rev. G.F. Bolster
