The Sandy Hook Lighthouse in New Jersey, the oldest operating lighthouse in the country, for 232 years. But that may not have been had things been different when citizens of newly formed U.S. of America had to fight the British for their newfound freedom.
One Lt. Colonel Benjaman Tupper, in June or 1776, with a force of 300 men and two, six pound cannons, Tupper moved out under cover of the night, slogging through the marshes and dense foliage that surrounded the Sandy Hook peninsula. However, the unfriendly terrain was only the beginning of the problems Tupper and his raiders would face.
"Halt" was probably the word that domed the attack. The challenge by enemy sentries confirmed Tupper's worst fear, the British were already on Sandy Hook. For an hour iron rounds the size of baseballs pelted the lighthouse as soldiers on both sides continued to exchange fire. But the cannon shot proved ineffective against the tower's 7-foot thick walls of stone and mortar. The six-pound balls simply bounced off the structure. With British reinforcements on the way, backed up by the guns of the frigate H.M.S. Phoenix offshore, Tupper and his men were forced to retreat under a hail of gunfire. The number of casualties Tupper's force suffered was left out of his report.

Vol. 16 page 143 of Massachusetts Soldiers and Sailors in the War of the Revolution,
Benjamin Tupper was a prominent early settler of the Northwest Territory.
Tupper was born in Stoughton, Massachusetts, on March 11, 1738. As a young boy, he served as an apprentice to a tanner. Her remained an apprentice until he reached the age of sixteen. Tupper then became a farm hand. In 1756, he enlisted in a military company and fought for the English in the French and Indian War. He married in 1762 and supported his family by teaching school. Once the American Revolution began, Tupper enlisted in the Continental Army. He fought in several major battles and attained the rank of brigadier general before retiring in 1783.
At the end of the Revolutionary War, Tupper was one of the 288 officers who signed the Newburgh Petition. These men hoped that the new government would pay its soldiers with land from the Ohio Country. Following the war, Tupper served in the Massachusetts legislature and assisted the state militia in putting down Daniel Shays' rebellion in 1786. In the same year, he ehlped Thomas Hutchins survey the Seven Ranges. He used the knowledge he gained while surveying to help the Ohio Company of Associates. The Company soon received permission from the Confederation Congress to establish settlements in the Ohio Country.
Tupper traveled west with the original Ohio Company settlers and helped found Marietta. He served on various committees responsible for building roads, determining where new settlements were to be founded, and where various flour and sawmills were to be located. On September 9, 1788, Tupper and Rufus Putnam became the first judges in the Northwest Territory. Tupper lived in the Northwest Territory for the remainder of his life. He died on June 7, 1792.

Jean Pitre
His name may have been Jan Pietr. Either for social acceptance or by mispronounciation, he became Jean Pitre. He was born around 1636. This pioneer would be our first Pitre ancestor to set foot on this continent and the progenitor of many Pitre, Lepitre, Pieters, Pieter, Pietre, Peters, Peter, Peete, living in Acadia, Quebec, Canada and the U.S. today.
[NAMES: Because of widespread illiteracy during these earlier centuries, it was not uncommon to see the spelling of names vary according to the priest or clerk who wrote it in his own way. Therefore, original spelling of many names may vary and change from one generation to the next.]
The first trace that is found of our ancestor is in the 1671 census of Port Royal, Acadia. Jean's trade is mentioned as edge-tool making which consists in the fabrication of sharp tools and irons used by farmers.
The pioneer of the Acadian Pitre family is Flemish according to a statement made at Belle-île-en-Mer, France after deportation by his grandson Claude Pitre.
However, in his "Dictionnaire généalogique des familles acadiennes" Professor Stephen White also cites Père Clarence d'Entremont (genealogist) who believed that it is more likely that he was English, based on "An account of the Customs and Manners of the Micmakis and Maricheets" where it is said that Peters, a toolsmith in England was of English origin.
Many hypotheses have been brought forth as to how Jean Pitre arrived in Acadia. It has been speculated that he arrived with the Sir ThomasTemple Expedition on May 1, 1657.
There is no list of settlers from this expedition but it coincides with Jean Pitre's arrival in Acadia.
[ Sir Thomas Temple: In 1654, Acadia was captured by the British. Colonel Temple became Governor of Acadia, which the British renamed Nova Scotia. During his governorship, Temple was an absentee governor who remained in Boston. His was much more of an economic arrangement than a political career and Temple only governed the immediate neighborhood of Port-Royal and a few other areas until 1670. On May 1, 1657, Sir Thomas Temple's ship arrived in Port-Royal, Acadia with a party of settlers. {navire-vag.jpg}]
On the other hand, Leopold Lanctot suggests that Jean Pitre first came as a pioneer to the Dutch colonies of Fort Orange (now Albany, N.Y.) or New Amsterdam (now New York, N.Y.). When the British took over those Dutch colonies Governor Temple would have recruited Dutchmen to take them to Acadia.
Another story that was told on the origins of Jean Pitre was published in "The History of St. Anthony's Parish 1803-1980" which relates to the descendants of Jean Pitre in Prince Edward Island, most of which have taken the name Peters. This account would have him in Permambuco, Brazil and escaping the Dutch wars in South America by hopping a schooner up to Acadia.
Still another story would have a named Peter (maybe Jean Pitre's father) arriving during the Scottish occupancy between 1621 and 1632. This last story is found in "The Acadian Miracle" by DJ Leblanc who states that Peter later changed his name to Pitre and remained in Acadia after the French retook possession in 1632.
Unfortunately all of these are just theories and speculations and we really don't know how and when Jean Pitre arrived in Acadia. For all we know, he could have arrived as a child with his parents or even been born in Acadia of parents who arrived earlier since there were not many documents kept in the early 1600's.
We know that he was in Port Royal around 1665 when he married Marie Pesseley because the following year, their first child Marie was born.
In 1671, Acadia is part of France again and the population has reached 360. In this first census taken in Acadia, we find the following:
"Jean PITRE, edge tool maker, 35, wife Marie Pesseley; Children: Claude 9 months and 2 daughters, Marie age 5 & Catherine age 3; cattle 1, no ploughed land."
The first census list our ancestor with his young family. At this time, he is one of the few Acadians with no farming land and would have had to concentrate on his skills as a toolsmith to provide for his family. By 1678, his family has grown and has added 2 acres of ploughed land and one more cow to help feed them.
It is through their fifth son François that our [Diane Pitre-Werner] Pitre lineage is continued. François is listed in the 1686 census as being 4 years old.
"1678 CENSUS: Jean Pitre & Marie Pesselet, 2 acres & 2 cows, 4 boys: 10 1668 Claude; 5 1673 Marc; 3 1675 (son); 1 1677 Pierre: 2 girls: 14 1664 Marie; 11 1667 Catherine;"
"1686 CENSUS: Jean PITRE age 61; Marie PESELET age 45, Claude age 16; Marc age 12; Pierre age 9; Jean age 6; François age 4; girl (Marguerite) age 2; girl (Jeanne) 1 month"
In 1689, war was declared between France and England. Boston's New Englanders took advantage of this by trying to invade Acadia one more time.
[ King Louis XIV: Louis XIV ruled in France from 1643 to 1715 during a period in that country's history that was known for its opulence and political genius. The 'arts' were generously promoted by the 'Sun King' so writers, musicians and painters flourished during this era. Unfortunately, all of Louis XIV's exuberance and the endless wars, were also costly for his people, impoverished by the end of his rule.]
Admiral Phipps arrived in Port Royal in 1690 with 700 English soldiers. The fort was defended by 70 French soldiers who eventually surrendered.
Inhabitants of Port Royal and 'Des Mines', locked in the church and with the threat of burning down their houses, were forced to sign a Declaration of Fidelity to the Crown of England, but still refused to bear arms against their French comrades.
Even though the French settlers had given in and signed the Declaration, for twelve days afterwards the New Englanders destroyed Acadia. The Church and Presbytery were razed. Cattle was destroyed, houses pillaged and 28 of them burned to the ground. The settlers were in a disastrous situation and they moved to Jemseg on the St-Jean River.
"Signing of the Oath" by Nelson Surette [painting in family album]
It was around that time that our first Ancestor, Jean Pitre, passes away in Port Royal. He would have been in his mid-fifties when he left his wife and nine children in mourning. Their youngest Jeanne was only 5 years old.

Their lives in context
Even though the English controlled the colony during the 1650's and 1660's, they didn't make much of an impact. During this period Acadia had much more contact with New England than with France. In the early years of Jean and Marie's marriage France again regained control (1667), even though they had decided not to send more colonists to the New World (1666).
France regained official control in 1670 and during the next 20 years of Jean and Marie's marriage the settlement grew outward. Positioned between New France and New England made Acadia the subject of disputes and attacks. It received little help from France and the Acadians still continued to trade with New England, although it was forbidden to do so.
After French attacks on New England in 1690, in retaliation the English captured and plundered Port Royal. The Port Royal Acadians swore an oath of allegiance to England to avoid further persecution. It was around this time that Jean Pitre died. His widow's second husband was presumably a recent arrival, as he did not appear in the 1686 census. The family continued to live in Port Royal, though by the early 1690's the families of the two elder daughters had moved south to Port Razoir. Over the next 16-17 years sporadic attacks from New England occurred at Port Royal, Minas and Beaubassin, while the children Claude, Marc, Jean, Francois, Marguerite and Jeanne started their own families. Most stayed in the Port Royal area, except Jean who went north to Cobequit. Marie was about 62 when she died the day after Christmas in 1707. Francois Robin had died 14 months before. The end of French control of this part of Acadia was only a few years away.
Theories of Jean Pitre's origin
According to the declaration at Belle-Île-en-Mer by his grandson Claude Pitre, the pioneer of the Acadian Pitre family is of Flemish origin. However, Père Clarence d'Entremont believes that it is "more likely that he was English" (Histoire du Cap-Sable), according to a report in An account of the Customs and Manners of the Micmakis and Maricheets (published London 1758), "where it is said that Peters, a toolsmith in England... was of English origin." [Excerpt from Dictionnaire Genealogique Des Familles Acadiennes (Stephen A. White), original in French]
Or was Jean Pitre really Jan Pietr from Holland? Leopold Lanctot theorizes that in about 1656 Jean emigrated to the American colonies founded by the Dutch, either to Fort-Orange (Albany, NY), or New Amsterdam (New York, NY). England had seized Acadia in 1654, renamed it New Scotland, and sent an expedition led by Sir Thomas Temple which arrived there on 1st May 1657. When war broke out between England and Holland in 1664, Bostonians seized Fort Orange and New Amsterdam. Temple then recruited the Dutch colonists for his new seignory, supposedly including Jan Pietr. (There is no list of settlers from this expedition but the timing allows for the possibility.)
Another theory of Jean's origins appeared in The History of St. Anthony's Parish 1803-1980 (which includes the descendants of Jean Pitre in Prince Edward Island, most of whom have taken the name Peters). This account would have him in Permambuco, Brazil and escaping the Dutch wars in South America by hopping a schooner to Acadia.
He could have arrived in Acadia as a child with his parents or been born in Acadia since there were not many documents kept in the early 1600's. His name may have originally been different from what we have in the 1671 census. But whatever his origins, there are today thousands of descendants across Canada, America and France who all trace their way back to Jean Pitre of Acadia.

"According to the statement made... Bellisle-en-Mer (Brittany), February 28, 1767, by Claude Pitre, who had taken refuge there after his deportation from England, his ancestor, Jehan Pitre known as Bénèque, had originated in Holland. His true name was Jan Pietr, francized as Jean Pitre. He had been born into 1636. About 1656, he emigrated to the American colonies founded by the Dutch, either Fort-Orange (today Albany, N.Y.), or... New Amsterdam (today, New York). In 1664, war broke out between England and Holland; Bostonians seize Fort-Orange and New-Amsterdam. In 1662, Sir Thomas Temple had been named baronnet of New-Scotland, the name which the English gave to Acadia, which it
had seized in 1654. They had received vast concessions there. After the capture of the Dutch colonies, he recruited the Dutch colonists for his new seigniory. Jan Pietr is in their number. ______________

General Notes: Child - Claude Pitre
Claude was born about February 1671, appearing in the 1671 census as a 9-month-old, the youngest of Jean and Marie's three children at that census. Acadia at that time was a community of about 400 people.
Over the next 20 years a relative stability existed within the colony, as they farmed, fished and traded. As relations were becoming more heated with the British, Claude married, probably at Port Royal c1696, to Marie Anne Comeau who was about eighteen. She was the oldest daughter of early Acadians Pierre Comeau, known as l'Esturgeon, and Jeanne Bourg. Having eight children over the next eleven years must have taken its toll as Marie Anne died at the age of twenty-nine only a month after their twins were born.
Claude now had at least six children to care for as well as earn a living. Maybe this was an unappealing proposition for young women in the area, because it was two and a half years before he remarried. (It’s possible that his youngest sister Jeanne, who is probably the "daughter over 12" appearing with their widowed mother in the 1707 census, took over the domestic duties for his family. Their stepfather had died 9 months prior, and their mother died 5 months after Marie Anne’s death so she could have easily stepped into the role. What became of her is unknown.) Twenty-two-year-old Anne Henry became Claude’s second wife during the winter of 1710. Anne was the middle child of Robert Henry, a Frenchman, and Marie Madeleine Godin, a Quebecois.
Eight months later Port Royal, having been given no assistance by the French, surrendered to the English forces. The inhabitants of Port Royal and those people living within three miles were granted permission to stay for two years by taking the oath of allegiance. The rest of Acadia came under English control in 1713. Most wanted to leave but it was almost impossible to do so.
The 1714 census still finds Claude, Anne, and their eight children in Port Royal. The 1717 burial registers record the death of Claude's two-week-old son Rene and six months later his 15-year-old son Jean. Five of Claude's children from his first marriage marry in Port Royal during the 1720's, so presumably Claude was still there. By the late-1720's Claude was in his mid-fifties. (The conditional oath had made the Acadians French neutrals so their lives were relatively peaceful until 1744.)
Claude and Anne were still in Port Royal in 1726, but daughter Marie Josephe married in Chipoudy in 1734. Possibly Claude died during this time and the remaining family moved away from Port Royal. I have no record of his death but his widow is listed in the 1752 and the 1754/55 censuses at Chipoudy. (Three of their sons, Pierre, Joseph and Charles, were prisoners at Halifax in 1763.) Of Claude's children from his first marriage, one died on Ile St. Jean, two in France and one in Louisiana; from the second marriage, one died in France, and three others in exile in Quebec, as did his widow Anne, in hospital, in 1757.

General Notes: Child - Marc Pitre
Marc Pitre
Marc was born c1673 at Port Royal, the fourth child of Jean and Marie. His father died when he was about sixteen but a stepfather fairly quickly appeared. With continuing attacks on Port Royal from New England, perhaps Marc delayed settling down as he did not marry until he was about 26. Around 1699 he married Jeanne Brun, the eldest child of native Acadians, Sebastien Brun and Huguette Bourg, and who was about three years his junior. It's certainly possible that they had more than four surviving children, but at this point only the four listed have been traced back to this couple.
They seemed to have settled initially in Port Royal, where two sons were born. Port Royal was again attacked in 1704 so that may have prompted the move south to Cap Sable, as there are no other children of theirs in the Port Royal baptism registers and they next appeared in the 1708 census for Cap Sable. In the 1714 census of Acadia that lay within English control, the couple was listed with two sons and two daughters. This accounts for the four traceable offspring.
According to his declaration at Belle Ile en Mer, their eldest child Claude Marc married at Cobequit in 1724, but it is unknown whether Marc and Jeanne were still alive. Possibly the family moved up to Cobequit in an attempt to escape English-controlled Acadia. The children seemed to have married either in Cobequit or Beaubassin. This would be a path of exile leading eventually to Ile St. Jean for a son and a daughter, and to Miramichi for another son. Their youngest daughter died in Beaubassin at the age of 33. It has been suggested that Marc’s widow Jeanne Brun was a refugee, with their son Jean Marc and his wife Judth Theriot, at Miramichi in 1760.
