General Notes: Wife - Lovisa Jane Hamilton

I initially identified the wife of Michael Mansfield on the following basis:
"Stone Sloops of Chebeague", chart, p. 128, lists Michael's wife as "Lovisa Jane Hamilton" without identifying her parents. The Hamilton chart on p.114 lists a "Louis" (birthdate not given) among the children of Alonzo S. Hamilton. No spouse is listed for Louis. I suspected that "Lovisa" was a typo for "Louisa". Nowhere in all the genealogies in this book is there an occurence of the male name "Louis", so Alonzo's child, I reasoned, could very well actually be a female - Lois or Louise or Louisa. A child of Alonzo would be just about the same age as Michael Mansfield, so I thought my reasoning had a high degree of probability. However, on 19 Oct 2003, I received the following email from Henrietta Leonard, M.D.(HLeonard@Lifespan.org):
. "The Stone Sloops of Chebeague is a good start, but it is not a primary soure and is inaccurate in many places.
. I have asked friends on Chebeague who were the parents of Lovisa Jane Hamilton. (her name really was Lovisa and not Louisa). They have replied with the following information:
. Lovisa Jane Hamilton is the daughter of Capt. Robert Clark Hamilton, Jr., Jan 14, 1830 to Feb 20, 1906, and Betsey Gowell, Apr 12, 1831 to Jan 30, 1920, both buried in the Chebeague Island cemetery, married Nov 25, 1851. She is their seventh child, Oct 28, 1867 to March 14, 1948, buried Chebeague Island cemetery. The chidlren of Michael Morse Mansfield and Lovisa are Cora
Luetta, Aug 15, 1887, Stella Mabel, Nov 29, 1893, and Arthur, Dec 1895.

General Notes: Husband - Ebenezer Hill

On 23 March 1964, in response to my inquiry to the town clerk of Yarmouth, Maine, regarding the ancestry of my great grandfather, Joseph G. Mansfield, I received a response from Katherine P. Tinker. She cited no sources. In that letter she wrote:
..."Ebenezer was born on Cousins Island the son of Hezekiah and Eunice (Collins) Hill, on Aug. 23, 1782. He married on Sept. 28, 1802 Lucy Hamilton the daughter of Ambrose and Deborah (Soule) Hamilton of Chebeauge. She was born in 1782. Ebenezer went to Chebeauge to live when he got married.
...He was a ship builder, a Mariner, and had a salt quarry and a brickyard.

Stone Sloops of Chebeague" (1949), chart, pp.106 & 122. Page 64 has the following to say about Ebenezer:
. "The colorful story of Ebenezer Hill (1782-1828) appears in about every article about Chebeague or Casco Bay. Our story is taken from Mabel Hamilton Hill's family history, supplemented by other facts.
. Ebenezer was born August 23, 1782 on Cousins Island. He married at 20 (1802) Lucy daughter of Ambrose and Deborah Soule Hamilton and settled on Chebeague. In 1804 he purchased from the Waite's the easterly half of Division Point - this was immediately adjacent to the farm of his parents - in - law. He built a brick house, and of bricks that he made and baked himself. Nearby Master Hill, as he was called, had a shipyard. In this shipyard he built five vessels (there might have been more, but probably not) - three of the vessels were built before the war of 1812: FOUNTAIN, DASH, EUNICE (note his daughter Eunice was born 1810). After the war of 1812 he built: brig DECATUR (named after Commodore Stephen Decatur), COLUMBIA (on which he died).
. During the war of 1812 he was a prisoner of war, his vessel having been captured by British - he was confined in the West Indies (encyclopedia says Bermuda) and while in this prison he became fast friends with another prisoner of war, Commodore Stephen Decatur of the Tripoli War fame. After the war was over, after a dangerous sail home in a leaky vessel, he built at Division Point the brig of 231 tons which he named after his friend "Decatur". In 1827 on this ship's maiden voyage she made Havre, France and on her return, bound for New Orleans with 520 emigrants, she was captured by Gibbs, the pirate. [Katherine P. Tinker wrote to me in 1964 that "Another ship that Ebenezer built he sold, and her flag was found in Capt. Kidd's collection." I would presume that she was also referring to the Decatur.]
. Master Hill was on his ship Columbia, returning from the West Indies with molasses when he died (1828). He had caught yellow fever down there, had partially recovered, but off New York they ran into a severe snow storm - the crew was short handed (deaths by yellow fever), so Master Hill went on deck to bring the Columbia in to port - he had a relapse and died. He was buried in Trinity Churchyard, Broadway at Wall Street, New York City."

General Notes: Child - Patrick Hunter

Burkes Commoners of Britain and Ireland Vol2 page 500. states that Patrick HUNTER was the son of William HUNTER, of Bunbury Yards, and a great grandson of Mungo HUNTER " as appears in a charter, now in possession of the family, dated 27th Sept 1611, by his marriage with Jean Cunningham.

Patrick HUNTER was 19th Laird of HUNTERston and co-heir on marrying Jean Cunningham (her mother was Robert HUNTER's sister). They had three sons: Robert, Henry & Francis, and two daughters. A large part of farmland was sold that was distant from Hunterston to consolidate the Estate. Patrick died in 1665 aged 74.

The original Hunter lands were Ardneil (or "Arnele" or "Arnell" or "Arnelle"). Ardneil Bay extends from West Kilbride towards Portencross on the south side of the Hunterston Peninsula. Ardneil is on the road between Portencross and West Kilbride.

The present estate of Hunterston is to the north of this, to the northwest of West Kilbride,. The old spelling of the family was "Huntar", and the estate, "Huntarstown".

Burkes says that Hunter of Hunterston "owned the present estates as early as the time of Alexander II, King of Scotland" (reigned 1214-49).

Hunterston Castle was built in the thirteenth century by the Laird of Hunterston. The fourteenth Laird built the Great Hall at Hunterston 1500.

Hunterston House built beside the old castle was begun in 1799, after the time our branch divided into the Wallace line.

The Hunterston Peninsula (the lands of the Castle) was zoned for industrialisation in the 20th cent, with a Compulsory Purchase Order in 1956 by the South of Scotland Electricity Board. A nuclear power station, "Hunterston B", was built on Hunterston lands on the sea side of the Castle, begun in 1967, completed 1976. Hunterston Castle and Hunterston House survive together.

The image attached is Hunterston Castle, Ayrshire Scotland. This is the ancestral home of the Hunter Clan. It is reportedly the longest clan-inhabited castle in Scotland.

. "I just wanted to thank you for your research on Chebeague Island. My mother, Helen Constance Hamilton, is from the line of Paul, Dana, Ruel, Soloman, John, and Ambrose Hamilton. Paul Jefferson Hamilton left the Island in the 1930s and moved to Salem, Oregon where most of the clan now live. My mother is 80 years old and quite ill. She has enjoyed my sharing my research into her family with her as she longs for her Island and is too ill to travel for a last visit. Much of my research has been lifted, of course, from your sight so we are both grateful for all your work and sharing.
. Paul was a linotype operator at the local newspaper before he retired to a life of golf and being proud of his Scotish ancestors."

George Armstrong Custer’s 7th U.S. Cavalry attacked Black Kettle’s Cheyenne village on the Washita River (near present day Cheyenne, Oklahoma). The evidence used to depict the Battle of Washita is derived from Custer’s own account of the battle while the evidence used in describing the events prior to the battle revolves heavily around General Phillip Sheridan’s annual report of 1868. A recent book by historian Jerome Greene helps to show what happened there by using US and Native American accounts of the event.

[edit]
The causes
The historical accounts which depict the events leading to the Battle of Washita make mention of two noteworthy items. First, was that there was a break down in communication between the Indians and their agent. Philip Sheridan describes this in his 1868 annual report writing, “Troops were sent twice or three times to Cobb, on requisition of the agent, who appeared to be constantly in trouble, either through his own fault or that of the Indians—most probably the latter, as they told me they did not like him….” The second item involves the raiding of Kansas and Colorado which resulted in the loss of American lives and property. Sheridan lists seventy-five citizens killed in his annual report and describes the loss of property as five thousand head of cattle and “… settlements … driven in and ranches abandoned, making the damage done to all interests very large.” To deal with the delinquent Indians Sheridan, with Custer in his command, devised a plan to destroy the Indian’s winter provisions subsequently forcing them onto the reservations.

After the raiding of Kansas began (or the Solomon and Saline River Massacres, in which more than 200 civilians were killed by the Cheyennes and several raped and caught prisoners), a free-fire zone was established and all non-hostile Indians were ordered to move south to the Washita River. Washita was a desirable wintering location for several reasons. Among these was that along the north bank of the river there were tall bluffs which served as a natural wind block while abundant grasslands covered the southern portion of the river offering good feed for Indian horses. Richard White describes Black Kettle’s arrival to the Washita River valley thus: "Black Kettle, the survivor of Sand Creek, journeyed to the Washita, seeking to include his band among the friendlies. But since many of his young men were raiding, the Americans rebuffed him. He made camp at the Washita anyway…"

[edit]
Black Kettle's raids against Kansas
On August 10 1868, 200 Cheyenne warriors retaliated in anger to massacres perpetrated by the U.S. government. Massacres - which included rapes and mutiliations, were confirmed in such raids as the Sand Creek Massacre where over 184 men, women, and children were murdered in 1864. The other Indians encamped along the Washita felt Black Kettle was unlucky after his misfortune at Sand Creek and made his group camp at the western end of the winter encampments over two miles from the other camp.

[edit]
The battle
On November 27, 1868 Custer’s Osage Nation scouts located the trail of an Indian war party. Custer followed this trail all day without break until nightfall. Upon nightfall there was a short period of rest until there was sufficient moonlight to continue. Eventually they reached Black Kettle’s village. Custer divided his force into four parts each moving into position so that at first daylight they may all simultaneously converge on the village. At daybreak the four columns attacked. The Indian warriors quickly left their lodges to take cover behind trees and in deep ravines. Custer was able to take control of the village quickly but it took longer to quell all remaining resistance.

Washita prisoners (53 women and children) testified that as many as 11 warchiefs and headmen were killed that day. Custer wrote that Indian losses in warriors should have been much greater than 103, probably 130 warriors killed (some sources stated that 150 warriors were killed). Between 19 and 25 civilians have been killed according to Washita prisoners and Kiowas witnesses. Osage scouts left Washita with Black Kettle’s scalp. Following the capture of Black Kettle’s village Custer was soon to find himself in a precarious position.

As the fighting was beginning to subside Custer began to notice large groups of mounted Indians gathering on nearby hilltops. He quickly learned that Black Kettle’s village was only one of the many Indian villages encamped along the river. Fearing an attack he ordered some of his men to take defensive positions while the others were to gather the Indian belongings and horses. What the Americans did not want or could not carry, they destroyed. Custer feared the outlying Indians would find and attack his supply train so near nightfall he began marching toward the other Indian encampments. Seeing that Custer was approaching their villages the surrounding Indians retreated to protect their families from a fate similar to that of Black Kettle’s village. At this point Custer turns around and begins heading back towards his supply train which he eventually reaches. Thus the Battle of Washita ends.

[edit]
The accounts of the battle
Historical accounts make no mention Black Kettle’s request to camp as a friendly tribe or of the free fire zone enacted in Kansas. In this sense the historical documents seem biased toward the Americans. While the historical documents tend to lean towards the American perspective, modern accounts, in describing the events prior to the battle, seem to remain largely objective and neutral.

The modern accounts of the Battle of Washita, and Richard White’s work, It’s Your Misfortune and None of My Own, tend to lose their neutrality while describing the battle. Richard White illustrates this trend by describing the battle as “Once more American soldiers attacked a Cheyenne village that consisted largely of women and children.” This is further demonstrated when Custer was described as being lucky to survive the battle. Since Custer’s own account of the battle contained the most information regarding the battle itself, the battle is described from his viewpoint. But there are contrasts between the historical and modern accounts.

The greatest difference between the modern and historical accounts is whether Washita was a battle or a massacre. Modern historians tend to lean towards the massacre side as White illustrates by writing “… American soldiers attacked, and … slaughtered a camp … of women and children.” White, however, provides no evidence to support this claim. Custer certainly does not consider Washita a massacre. He does mention that some women did take weapons and were subsequently killed. This seems logical since it was four years earlier when Chivington stormed through Sand Creek slaughtering many men and women. With this thought in their minds, women would certainly not feel comfortable with American soldiers in their midst. Custer did leave Washita with women and children prisoners; he did not simply kill every Indian in the village though he admittedly couldn't avoid to kill women in the middle of the hard fight.

Historian Jerome Greene : "Soldiers evidently took measures to protect the women and children." ("Washita 1868", Norman, University of Oklahoma Press, p.189)

Another area of comparison between modern and historic accounts is the story of Major Elliot. Elliot, who died in the battle, commanded one of the four columns that attacked the village. Neither the modern nor historic account of the battle can precisely describe the circumstances of his death. One version is that he ventured too far east and encountered some of other tribes of Indians where he was killed. In the historic accounts Elliot’s story is similar which Custer briefly describes in his autobiography. Apparently one of the Custer’s scouts saw Elliot chase some of the Cheyenne Indians west that were escaping from Black Kettle’s village. Different amongst the two accounts of the battle is whether Custer searched for Elliot after his disappearance. Custer says he did. “Parties were sent in the direction indicated by the scout, he accompanying them; but after a search extending nearly two miles all the parties returned, reporting their efforts to discover some trace of Elliot and his men fruitless.”

The last common point of interest was the loss of the cavalry’s great coats. Custer had his men set their coats aside prior to the battle and that the Indians were able to capture these. Custer admits to this in his account. He had ordered the men to take of their coats so they would have greater maneuverability. Not mentioned in the modern accounts was that Custer’s men also had left their rations. Custer left a small guard with the coats and rations but the Indian forces were too superior and the guard retreated thus the great coats and rations were captured.

From both the historic and modern accounts we can determine that the cause of the Battle of Washita was a break down in Indian to agent communications which resulted in Indian raiding.

[edit]
Depiction in fiction
In the film The Last Samurai, Tom Cruise's character Captain Nathan Algren had nightmares from his participation at the battle.

In the film Little Big Man the battle has a significant role. It is depicted as a massacre.

"Stone Sloops of Chebeague" (1949), p.117, identifies her as Silas' wife and Solomon's daughter. She is not, however listed among the children of Solomon Francis Hamilton & Lucy A. Hill on the chart on p.108.

Phoebe was certainly brother to Solomon Francis Hamilton, NOT daughter. Per "Research of D.G. Weymouth" (www.weymouthtech.com/genealogy), she was born abt. 1852. This is the same year that Mary Jane (Littlefield) Mansfield died, so it is probable that Mary Jane died due to complications involving Phoebe's birth.

Jared Handspicker <jedh@jedh.com>, emailed me on 11 JAN 2005:
"Apparently, she was the daughter of Solomon Sawyer [Hamilton], but she was the only survivor of triplets and her mother died in childbirth at that time. Robert Hamilton and Serena (can't recall last name) appear as her "parents" on later census records, because they didn't list familial connections, until the years after she'd already married. Robert and Serena were her aunt and uncle, and raised her throughout her growing years on Chebeague." [Robert Hamilton was Phoebe's uncle - the brother of her father.]

General Notes: Wife - Huldah Johnson

"Stone Sloops of Chebeague" (1949), page 117 states that a Huldah Johnson was wife of Ruel D. Hamilton. However there is a note on the bottom of the Johnson chart on page 124: "Not all chebeague Johnsons are in this immediate family, for instance "Uncle Jeff", Thomas Jefferson
Johnson (b.1833) and his sister Hulda (Mrs. Ruel Hamilton) are not."
. This source does not identify Huldah's parents.
. [K.P. Tinker, who was the source for this genealogy, only knew the Johnson line back to James Johnson & Hannah Bates. if she had been able to go back one more generation, she would have known that all these Johnsons were descended from Jacob & Abigail (Bibber) Johnson.]

The LDS IGI lists his birth on 20 MAR 1831in Jonesport, Washington Co, Maine. I think the birthplace probably mistaken - the contributor was probably researching the Mansfields of Jonesport.

General Notes: Child - Adatrue Mansfield

According to Robert Anderson's database, there was an Adam True Mansfield born in Rockport, Knox Co., Maine on 9 Apr 1862, the son of James Edward Mansfield (RIN 10150) & Mary Cleaves. There is no Adam or True Mansfield listed in any of the census for James & Mary. Therefore, I think this is the same person, and that Anderson's source was in error.

Another possibilty. James was William's brother (Adam True's uncle), so Adams True could have been James' son, but raised in the household of his uncle for some reason. However, if this is the case, the 1880 census, which identified True as son of William, would be in error.

. True, son, age 18, works for brick maker.

The 1860 census for his father has no son named Smith, but has a Donald
born the same year as "Stone Sloops" says Smith was born. It is
noteworthy that the household enumerated immidiately after the Sawyer's
in that census is that of Donald M. Smith, a 26 year old fisherman, and his
wife Augusta A. Perhaps the entry in "Stone Sloops" made use of the
census and got the names garbled.

Biography: SCHUYLER HAMILTON

Hamilton, Schuyler, Major-General, was born in New York
city, July 25, 1822. He was graduated at West Point in 1841,
entered the first infantry and served on the plains and as
assistant instructor in tactics at West Point. In the Mexican
war he served with conspicuous distinction, being brevetted
1st lieutenant for gallantry at Monterey, where he was
severely wounded, and captain for gallantry at Mil Flores,
where in a hand-to-hand encounter with Mexican lancers, he was
wounded by a lance, which passed entirely through his body.
He was promoted 1st lieutenant in March, 1848, was acting
aide-de-camp to Gen. Scott from 1847 to 1854, and in 1855
resigned from the army. At the beginning of the Civil war he
reentered the national service, volunteering as a private in
the 7th regiment, N. Y. state militia, served for a time on
the staff of Gen. Benjamin F. Butler, and afterwards acted as
military secretary to Gen. Scott until the latter's
retirement, being instrumental in preventing the murder of
certain Confederate prisoners of war captured on the battle
field of Bull Run. He was subsequently assistant chief of
staff to Gen. H. W. Halleck, with the rank of colonel, was
commissioned brigadier-general of volunteers on Nov. 12, 1861,
and ordered to command the Department of St. Louis. He served
with Grant's army operating in western Kentucky and Tennessee,
suggested to Gen. Pope the cutting of a canal to turn the
enemy's position at Island No. 1O, and commanded a division in
the assault on that island and New Madrid, for which he was
promoted major-general of volunteers on Sept. 17, 1862. He
commanded the reserve at the battle of Farmington. On Feb.
27, 1863, he was compelled to resign on account of feeble
health. After the war Gen. Hamilton made a number of attempts
to be reinstated on the army list as lieutenant-colonel and
colonel U. S. A., but was unsuccessful, and his friends have
always maintained that in neglecting to restore him to rank
the government was guilty of gross injustice to a brave and
faithful officer. He was hydrographic engineer for the
department of docks, New York city, 1871-75. Gen. Hamilton
died March 18, 1903.

"Stone Sloops of Chebeague" (1949), chart pp. 108 &126.

Phoebe was certainly Mary Jane's daughter, NOT her granddaughter, as suggested by "Stone Sloops". Per "Research of D.G. Weymouth" (www.weymouthtech.com/genealogy), Phoebe was born abt. 1852. This is the same year that Mary Jane died, so it is probable that Mary Jane died due to complications involving Phoebe's birth.

General Notes: Child - Statira Littlefield Hamilton

"Stone Sloops of Chebeague" (1949), p. 115 identifies "Statira Littlefield" as wife of John Ross Hamilton. Her parents are not mentioned and she is not listed on the Littlefield chart.

"Research of D.G. Weymouth" (www.weymouthtech.com/genealogy), identifies the wife of John Ross Hamilton as "Statira Hamilton", daughter of Solomon Sawyer Hamilton & Mary Jane Littlefield. Gives vital statistics. Birth date is given as 7 NOV 1839.

My conclusion is that she was almost certainly STATIRA LITTLEFIELD HAMILTON, her middle name being the namesake of her mother's maiden name.

Note that either the birthdate for Statira (7 NOV 1839) or for her brother Ruel (15 DEC 1839) must be wrong. A woman can't bear two children 5 weeks apart!
Jared Handspicker <jedh@jedh.com> emailed me:
."On Statira and Ruel Hamilton, based on 1850-1860 Census records, it would seem she was born closer to 1838 and he closer to 1840. The 1839 years in birth dates may be due to "approximations", but the day/month combinations may still be accurate.. just in the wrong years.
. By logistical analysis, her birthdate is most likely 07-Nov-1838 (possibly 1837, based on lateness in year AND the probability of a mistranscription of 1837 as 1839. Believe the 15-Dec-1839 date for Ruel is correct.
. If entering into my database, given the census information paired with the website info, I would list Ruel as born 15-Dec-1839, and Statira as 07-Nov- 1837/38. Just to be on the safe side."

General Notes: Child - Phoebe Ellen Hamilton

Robert and Serena were her aunt and uncle, and raised her throughout her growing years on Chebeague." [Robert Hamilton was Phoebe's uncle - the brother of her father.]
. Later, he mailed me the burial information:
. "Phoebe Hamilton, bur 3 Jul 1918 66 year/1852 (mother of Fred)"
