BIOGRAPHY: First permanent white resident of Calais, Maine. Came from Jonesport in 1779.
BIOGRAPHY: Daniel fought in the French & Indian War under Rogert Rogers of "Torger's Rangers". During the Revolutionary War, he defended Machias against the British invasion. According to Howard Wolliscraft, Daniel became a US citizen on January 1784 by order of the courts of Massachusetts. Daniel was one of the 16 settlers who came from Scarboro, Maine to Machias, and then to Ferry Point in Calais, Maine. He moved from Scarboro to Jonesport to Machias in 1779. Daniel went to Plymouth, Mass and after marriage lived in the vicinity of Casco Bay.
1840 - The Thomas Hill House is built at what is now 269 Main Street.
It stands today in 1999. Quoting from a tourist brochure, "A two-story Greek Revival style house distinguished by four broad pilasters gracing its facade. This house was built in 1840 for Thomas Hill, the oldest son of Daniel Hill, the first settler in Calais. Thomas was a sea aptain and gathered a variety of materials for his house on his voyages, white marble from Italy, mahogany from South America, and a pewter chandelier from Paris. He employed highly skilled workmen to create a truly unique home. The house was occupied by the Hill family until 1944 and remained in the family until 1960".
St Croix Historical Society held Daniel Hill Day at the historic Holmes Cottage on Main Street in Calais in June 2000. An Indian guide is said to have brought Hill to Calais from Machias in 1776. Hill soon built a cabin on what is now Union street, and also cleared a plot of land at Ferry Point, where the bridge now stands.

Research Notes: Husband - Francis Littlefield
Francis sr. (11) (s/o Edmund 8), bapt. 17 June 1619 at Tichfield, Wells, innkeeper. The oft-told story of his separartion from his family was the imagining of someone trying to account for two brothers of the same name, and it is not unlikely
he accompanied his father here. He may have moved around before settling in Wells. Where he was granted 50 acres by T. Gorges in 1643. Taxed Woburn 1646; Dover 1648; soon in Wells with 2d, wife, yet bought a house at Charlestown in 1653.
Representative from York 1660, Wells 1665, 1676, 1681. Grand jury 1666, 1667, 1673, 1687. County Treasurer 1676, 1678, 1681. Selectman 1677. Lists 354a, 261, 75b, 252, 263, 262, 264, 269b, 25, 254, 28, 88, 266, 36. Licensed innholder many times
1661-1691, afterwards presumably at Ipswich, where innholder 2 May 1700. Licensed at Wells Oct. 1700, 1701, 1702. Though in Essex Court Mar. 1701 when his step-son-in-law Cyprian Whipple was acquitted of selling liquor, he did it only as one of
his father L.'s family. Inventory 15 Jan. 1712-3; administered to son Dependence, whose bill calling him lately deceased, charged for two years "diet and attendance," and transporting "my dear father" twice from the westward to Wells. Three
wives; Jane Hill, died Woburn 20 Dec. 1646; Rebecca, born 31 Jan. 1630, living 29 Mar. 1683, when he deeded homestead, with life reservations to son Dependence, excluding what given to sons James and Daniel; 3d, married by 1689 Mary (Wade),
widow of William Symonds of Ipswich. One child Mary, by first wife; eleven by second (7 recorded together at Wells), see also (Moulton (13) for unnamed daughter.

General Notes: Child - John Throckmorton
Before his emigration, John was "an officer of an English Municipal Corporation and had some acquaintance with law.
"John Throckmorton settled at Salem, then the chief port of New England, and took the oath of freeman 18th May the same year. He made purchases of land in the Forest River section of Mass., now known as Marblehead Farms. He retained this land after he removed from Salem. Throckmorton probably went to R.I. during the summer of 1636. He was the sole witness to a deed, Nov. 10, 1637, wherein Roger Williams, jointly with Gov. Winthrop, purchased from Canonicus the large island in Narragansett Bay named by him Prudence, but called by the Indians, Chibachuwest. Oct 8 , 1638, he was one of the twelve to whom Williams deeded land he had purchased from Canonicus and Mantonomi, and thus one of the thirteen proprietors of Pawtuxet. John Throckmorton was among the fifty-four persons to whom was alloted the first home lots in Providence and one of the three men on the committee which formed the original list of lots and the Towne Street on which they lay."
"In 1643 he made application to the Dutch to settle within their jurisdiction which was granted. This grant, subsequently called Throckmorton's Neck and Throg's Neck, embraced the eastern part of the present town. It was bounded on the north by Eastchester neck, on the east by Eastchester Bay, and on the west by Westchester creek. Throckmorton's settlement had a short existence and was obliterated by the Indian uprising in the fall of 1643, when it was set upon by the savages and every vestige of it destroyed. Eighteen persons were killed and those who were so fortunate as to escape death and made their way to the Fort at New Amsterdam and 'some that escaped from the Indian attack went back to Rhode Island', says Winthrop. Among those who returned was John Throckmorton.
"In 1652 he was Town Moderator, at Providence, R.I. In 1664, he became interested in the development of East Jersey, and shortly thereafter became one of the Monmouth Patentees. In 1664-68, 1670-73, and 1675, he was a Deputy in Rhode Island. In 1677 He was Town Treasurer, also in the same year a member of the Town Committee."

On 23 March 1964, in response to my inquiry to the town clerk of Yarmouth, Maine, regarding the ancestry of my great grandfather, Joseph G. Mansfield, I received a response from Katherine P. Tinker. She cited no sources. In that letter she wrote:

Rachel is said to have weighed about 300 pounds. Henry Jr. was owner of two schooners : the RESCUE of 5 tons; the DREADNOUGHT of 6 tons. He was a trustee of the Methodist society in 1843."

According to Robert Anderson's database, there was an Adam True Mansfield born in Rockport, Knox Co., Maine on 9 Apr 1862, the son of James Edward Mansfield (RIN 10150) & Mary Cleaves. There is no Adam or True Mansfield listed in any of the census for James & Mary. Therefore, I think that Anderson's source was in error. James' brother, William had a son named Adams True who was the same age and is almost certainly the same person.
