Although he is probably the son of John and the father of James, neither of these relationships has yet been positively proven.
Following is from "The Sawyer Family of Elliotsville (Piscataquis Co., Maine), Descendants of James Sawyer of Gloucester, Mass. and Their Kinfolk, The Drakes" 3rd ed, revised 1978-79, by Fred E. Sawyer (p.iv):
. "It seems difficult to determine with any degree of certainty the orign and relationship of the various immigrant ancestors of the SAWYERS in America. There seems to have been a legend that three SAWYER brothers, Thomas, Edward, and William, migrated from Lincolnshire, England, came on a ship with Capt. Parker, and settled in Mass. about 1636. MAINE GENEALOGY VOL.: page 1444, gives the foIlowing information on the orgin of the SAWYER family: "The ancestors of the SAWYERS, JOHN SAWYER, was a farmer in Lincolnshire, England, where he is supposed to have been a landholder also. He was the father of three sons: William, Edward, and Thomas, who left England on a ship commanded by Capt. Parker, and settled in Massachusetts about 1636. Edward, son of John SAWYER, brought over with him from England his wife, whose name was MARY PEASLEY, and their children, Mary, Henry, and James, and settled first in Ipswich and then in Rowley, Mass. No more is known of Edward or his wife." . . .
. In any case EDWARD SAWYER OF ROWLEY is, thru his son John, the immigrant ancestor of most of the family of SAWYER'S of Rowley. In summary EDWARD SAWYER'S family is as follows:
. EDWARD SAWYER of ROWLEY, b. 1608, Lincolnshire, Eng., possibly the son of JOHN SAWYER who married in England., Mary PEASELEY, b. abt 1610, of Lincolnshire Co. Eng. dau. Joseph PEASELEY. Will proved 31 Mar 1674. Children include: Surname SAWYER:
. (i) Mary b. Eng. before 1636, m. 7 Nov 1648, William MITCHELL;
. (ii) Henry, b. Eng. before 1636, m. Mary PEASLEY;
. (iii) James b. before 1636, Eng., (it is this James that some authors identify as James SAWYER of Gloucester, who d. 31 May 1703 - however in the will of Edward proved 31 Mar 1674 he list only oldest son John and son Ezekiel); [it would be this James who is our ancestor.]
. (iv) Samuel b. abt 1637, Prob. Ipswich, Mass.,
. (v) Sarah, b. 19 Dec 1645, Rowley, bur 12 Feb 1646;
. (vi) John, b. 17 Sep 1647, Rowley, d. 1647/8
. (vii) John, b. 4 Aug 1648, Rowley, m. Mary PARRAT, d. 7 Apr 1722;
. (viii) Ezekiel, b. abt 1650, of Rowley, d. 18 Sep 1675.
. Reference: Mass. Genealogy, History & V.R. Rowley, Mass., and others."
It is curious that Fred E. Sawyer included the above entry, which casts serious doubts that Edward was the father of James, in his 1978-79 work, yet wrote the following entry for his 1983 work. The later work seems to accept the filiation, but with no further explanation. It should also be noted that the entry for James in his 1983 work reads "Parentage un-proven, possibly s. Edward. . ."
From the "General Index of the Sawyer Families of New England Prior to 1900", by Fred E Sawyer, 1983:
. "Edward, b.1608, of Rowley, Lincolnshire, Eng., son of John, brought over with him from England his wife Mary and ch. Mary, Henry, and James, and settled first at Ipswich and than [sic.] at Rawley, Ma. Edward bur. 9 Mar 1673, Rowley, Ma. His wife Mary Peasley b. ca. 1610, Eng. dau Joseph Peasley as indicated in his will 1660."
. Mr. Sawyer continues on to list all of Edward's and Mary's children. The list is identical to the one cited above from his earlier work with two exceptions:
. He has deleted the qualifying remarks from James and identified 2 wives so that it reads:
. (3) James, b. bef. 1636, d. 31 May 1703, m. (1) Martha, m. (2) Sarah Bray.
. He also added the comment to the youngest son, Ezekiel, that he was "killed at Bloody Brook, 18 Sep 1675."

On 23 March 1964, in response to my inquiry to the town clerk of Yarmouth, Maine, regarding the ancestry of my great grandfather, Joseph G. Mansfield, I received a response from Katherine P. Tinker. She cited no sources. In that letter she wrote:
..."[Solomon and Lydia (Horn) Sawyer] lived at Falmouth, Gorham (in 1770), and Cape Elizabeth before going to Chebeague to settle. Solomon was the son of Jacob and Sarah (Wallis) Sawyer who came to Maine"
The following is from "The Sawyer Family of Elliotsville (Piscataquis Co., Maine), Descendants of James Sawyer of Gloucester, Mass. and Their Kinfolk, The Drakes" 3rd ed, revised 1978-79, by Fred E. Sawyer (p.18):
. "Solomon Sawyer of Falmouth, Me., b.14 May 1728, Falmouth, Cumberland Co., Maine, son of Jacob and Sarah (WALLIS) SAWYER, M. 16 Sep 1752, Falmouth, Me., Ruth BANGS, is said to have removed to Gorham, Me., abt 1777.
. Children, birth place not determined: (Surname SAWYER):
. 46) 1. SOLOMON, b. abt 1754, m. 10 Oct 1779, Phebe STROUT.
. Note - There was a Solomon SAWYER who m. LYDIA HORN 17 MAY 1765, Cape Elizabeth, Me. He is thought to have had Ann who m. 1790 John HAMILTON, and Ruth who m. 1794, Ambrose HAMILTON. This could be part of this family. (Hist. Cousins & Little Johns Islands)
. References: V.R. Falmouth Maine; V.R. Cape Elizabeth Maine."
In his "General Index of the Sawyer Families of New England Prior to 1900", the same author, Fred E Sawyer, in 1983, asserts that Solomon Sawyer married both Ruth Bangs and Lydia Horn (p.92):
. "Solomon, chr. Sep 1730, Falmouth, Me., s. Jacob, b.1687 & Sarah Wallis; m. 16 Sep 1752, Falmouth, Me., Ruth Bangs. Ch. Solomon, b. ca. 1754, of Gorham, Me., m. 10 Oct 1779, Phebe Strout.
. Solomon m. (2) 17 May 1765, Falmouth, Me., Lydia Horn. Ch. include:
. Ann, m. ca. 1790, John Hamilton.
. Ruth, m. Ambrose Hamilton. [our ancestors.]
. The Solomon Sawyer family moved to Gorham, Me., ca. 1770.
. Ref: Hist Cousins & Little Johns Island, Me.; Rec 2nd Parish Falmouth, Me.; V.R. Falmouth, Me."
"Stone Sloops of Chebeague" (1949), chart p. 134, shows 3 children, Solomon, Ann, & Ruth. Chart does not name any wife. Has note that he "bought 37 1/2 acres on West End of Chebeague from heirs of Zachariah Chandler in 1791.

General Notes: Child - Hugh Capet Of France
The election of Hugh Capet as king in 987 began the Capetian Dynasty whi
ch ruled France for much of the middle ages. However, the actual royal do
maine, known as Ile-de-France, was small and weak, consisting of little mo
re that the land surrounding Paris, Orléans and Laon. It was not until t
he 12th century that later Capetians took steps to strenghten the ki
ng in the Ile-de-France.
Hugh Capet (French: Hugues Capet) (938 October 24, 996) was King of Fran
ce from 987 to 996. Capet is a nickname for "wearing a cape".
Born in 938 in Paris, he came from a powerful and influential family of t
he Germanic aristocracy of France, two members of which had already been e
lected King of France in the ninth and tenth centuries. Hugh Capet was t
he eldest son of Hugh the Great, then the most powerful man in the kingdo
m, maker of kings, and of Hedwige of Saxony (c.910c.965), daughter of Ki
ng Henry I (the Fowler) of Germany and sister of German Emperor Otto I. Hu
gh Capet wanted to become a lay abbot, and in 980 arranged to move the rel
ics of St. Valery to Amiens Cathedral. Heinherited his father's vast esta
tes and became the most powerful noble of his time. From 978 to 986, Hu
gh Capet allied himself with the German emperors Otto II and Otto III a
nd with archbishop Adalberon of Reims to dominate the weak Carolingian kin
g, Lothair. By 985, he was king in all but name. After Lothair and his s
on died in early 987, the archbishop of Reims convinced an assembly of nob
les to elect Hugh Capet as their king. He was crowned King of France at No
yon, Picardie on July 3, 987, the first of the Capetian dynasty to rule Fr
ance.
Hugh Capet possessed minor properties near Chartres and Anjou. Between Par
is and Orléans he possessed towns and estates amounting to approximately 4
00 square miles (1,000 kmř). His authority ended there, and if he dared tr
avel outside his small area, he risked being captured and held for rans
omor even murdered. Indeed, there was a plot in 993 masterminded by the B
ishopof Laon and Odo I of Blois to deliver Hugh Capet into the custo
dy of Otto III. The plot failed, but the fact that no one was punished ill
ustrates how tenuous his hold on power was. Beyond his power base, in t
he rest of France, there were still as many codes of law as there were fie
fdoms. The country operated with 150 different forms of currency and at le
ast a dozen languages. Uniting all this into one cohesive unit was a formi
dable task and a constant struggle between those who wore the crown of Fra
nce and its feudal lords. As such,Hugh Capet's reign was marked by numero
us power struggles with the vassals on the borders of the Seine and the Lo
ire. Beyond his realm, the investiture and then deposition of Arnulf, neph
ew of the duke of Lorraine, as archbishop of Reims involved the king and b
ishops in conflict with Pope John XV that was not yet resolved at Hugh Cap
et's death in 996.
While Hugh Capet's military power was limited and he had to seek milita
ry aid from the Duke of Normandy, his unanimous election as king gave h
im great moral authority and influence.
Hugh Capet married Adelaide of Aquitaine (9521004), daughter of Duke Will
iamIII of Aquitaine. Their children were:
1. Avoise (9701013)
2. Robert II (March 27, 972 July 20, 1031)
3. Alice (9741079)
4. Gilette (born c.976)
5. Gisele (born c.978), married Hugh I of Ponthieu.
Hugh Capet died on October 24, 996 in Paris, and was interred in the Sai
nt Denis Basilica. He was succeeded by his son, Robert II.

Immigration: 1635
1. Thomas' origin is probably England but the place of his birth and nationality are not certain, nor is the time of his migration to America, the passengers he came with, and the ship upon which he arrived.
He wasan intimate friend of Rev. James Noyes and many Wheeler family personslived in Cholderton, Wiltshire, England, the Noyes family home. The firstknowledge of him is as a resident of Lynn, Massachusetts in 1635, whenand where he was elected constable, and held other official positionslater. In 1642 he was admitted to the privilege of freeman from thecommonwealth of Massachusetts, purchasing large tracts of land there, including a mill site, upon which he built and operated a saw and gristmill. He removed to Stonington in 1667, and later, with his son Isaac, built a home in North Stonington, his final home.
From Richard Anson Wheeler's, History of Stonington, Conn. - 1649-1900,(Press of The Day Publishing Company, 1900), page 636.
2. Thomas was one of the original nine organizers of the First Church ofStonington in 1674.

Following Research by: William R. Randall, wrandall@socal.rr.com
"Thomas Wheeler, the ancestor of the Wheeler family of Stonington, Connecticut, and region round about, was doubtless of English origin, but the place of his birth, and nationality are not certainly known, nor has the time of his migration to this country been ascertained, so as to associate him with any of the passengers of the early emigrant ships.
1635: The first knowledge that we have of him in this country is when he appears as a resident of the town of Lynn, Massachusetts, when and where he was elected constable, and held other official positions later on.
1642: He was admitted in the privilege of a freeman of the commonwealth of Massachusetts, purchasing large tracts of land there, including a mill site, upon which he built and operated a saw and grist mill. During his residence in Lynn he married Mary (unknown), a young lady of his acquaintance, whose family name in unknown, but our family traditions represent her as a woman of pleasing and attractive accomplishments, and in every way worthy of her liege loard; she graced her domestic duties with cheerful loveliness, filling his home with light and love.
1667: What induced our ancestor, Thomas Wheeler, to leave Lynn, Massachusetts, and sell out his business and real estate there, and take up his abode in the town of Stonington, is not fully understood, but whatever motive actuated him in coming this way it is plainly evident that he intended to make Stonington his final home. He was an intimate friend of Reverend James Noyes, who came to Stonington the same year that he did, and it has been supposed that the friendship between them was the cause of his coming. But that as it may, there were men of his name that lived in the English home of the Noyes family, and crossed the ocean about the same year that he did.
1669: Thomas Wheeler was made freeman in the Connecticut Colony.
1673: He was nominated and elected one of the Stonington representatives to the Connecticut General Court.
1674: The next year his name appears among the nine who organized the First Congregational Church of Stonington, June 3, 1674, and his wife, Mary Wheeler, was one of the partakers with the church in their first communion service. Soon after Thomas Wheeler and his wife came to Stonington to live, he and his son Isaac built them a residence in North Stonington, where Colonel James F. Brown now resides, where they lived and died. Thomas Wheeler left a will, which was lost by being burned when the infamous Arnold burned the city of New London, September 6, 1781. The existence of his will is proved by his descendants referring in it in later instruments conveying the real estate that belonged to him and given to them in his will.
1685: Thomas Wheeler died at the age of 84 years and is buried, with his wife, in the old Whitehall burial place, situated on the east bank of the Mystic River. [Research of NancyAnn Norman]

The ESSEX ANTIQUARIAN
Edited by Sidney Perley and George Francis Dow, The Essex Antiquarian
The Essex Antiquarian was published from 1897 to 1909 by Sidney Perley and George Francis Dow, both noted Essex County Genealogists and Historians. The purpose and accomplishments of the Antiquarian are best described in the words of Perley and Dow, as published in the final edition Vol. 13, No. 4, October 1909:
"The Essex Antiquarian was purposed to fill a want. It was designed to be a leader in scientific historical research; and to present copies or abstracts of records and compilations in an exhaustive and systematic manner, so that as far as the publication extended further investigation along those lines would be needless. Repeated examinations of records tend to their destruction, and thousands of dollars have been spent locally upon the same records for the same purpose by various persons who were ignorant of costly examinations made by others. This purpose, if prosecuted, would preserve the records and make further expenditure of money and labor unnecessary. This has been the particular reason of the appearance of the genealogies in alphabetical order, the gravestone inscriptions, abstracts of the Salem and Ipswich quarterly court records and files, old Norfolk county records, all wills in the order of their probate, Essex Gazette notes, abstracts of titles to land, etc., as shown in Salem, Haverhill, Ipswich and Marblehead in 1700, and in Georgetown and Topsfield in 1800. During the thirteen years of its existence there have been published in The Essex Antiquarian genealogies of all families from Abbe to Brown; all gravestone inscriptions dated prior to the year 1800 in Amesbury, Andover, Beverly, Boxford, Bradford, Danvers, Essex, Georgetown, Gloucester, Groveland, Hamilton, Haverhill and Ipswich; all wills proved in the county prior to June, 1666; the record of the Essex County Revolutionary soldiers and sailors alphabetically to Brown; abstracts of the old Norfolk records to 1675; Salem and Ipswich quarterly court records and files to 1659; and abstracts of all records in the first ten volumes of the Suffolk county registry of deeds relating to Essex county persons and property, where parties resided or property was located in Essex county, covering the period prior to 1678."
